I painted some white lions this weekend, it was so fun, unlike the lumineth (the armor trim haunts me in my dreams)
It even sparked my desire of returning to warhammer fantasy 8th, turns out there's a sizable group of people that still play it.

I have some eye damage from laser surgery too and it sucks, it's so cool that you've found a particular style of model and painting that minimises your eye issues. I agree, the old axaggerated models are so full of character anyway, I love em

Everyone loves Oldhammer Dwarves, from the time Dwarves did not walk around with diapers on. Back then the miniatures had humor, charm and character…

Generally, I also prefer the older models. I think it's partially nostalgia but readability is also a big factor. Too often I look at a new miniature from GW and it takes me a moment to figure our what it's supposed to be. The kits are technically impressive but all too often they're extremely busy. You rarely encounter this problem with older models and I think it adds to their charm.

I prefer the older models - especially Dwarfs and Chaos Dwarfs. It's the fact that they are hand-sculpted. I know some still are, but back then they all were. And they had to be designed to be in one piece, generally. It's something about handmade pieces. I like the weight of them in my hand, too.

I agree with you. I have a soft place in my heart for the old, big-hat chaos dwarves. I always wanted an army of them, but back in college when they were still being sold, I could either afford them or straight chaos. I am currently collecting them.

My two cents: older models were inconsistent in quality, some were really bad, goofy or droopy but others were magnificent.
the charismatic long faced elves, the grotesque orcs and goblins or the short quarrelsome dwarfs.
they were fun, full of personality, easy to see on the table and had a lot of potential with brush and paint.
the "heroic scale", with exagerated hands, feets, noses, ears, beards, for me is the perfect scale.

  • @Adrokk3

I do prefer the vintage sets, I grew up pouring hours over citadel annual catalogs I 'borrowed' from my uncle. The character, comedic feeling across some of the fantasy ranges (orcs and hobos obvisouly) the entire dogs of war mercenary army. The Lustrian campaign. Many many fantastic memories putting those figures on the table. Didnt matter that some or all were duplicate sculpts, didnt matter how badly they were painted, just that they were.
I wholeheartedly agree that minis coming out these days seem wary to use 'space' on the model canvas. And instead have an inbuilt desire to fill all the voids and area with stuff. Less is more. It will never change.

IMHO I prefer kits that give me a lot of stuff to work with. Be it for the models itself, kitbashing, use in terrain or whatever. The more, the better. But I feel like the models from early 00s to early 10s were the most versatile. After that, it all went down the drain.
However I can understand that people like those metal models, I do like them myself. It was just something different if you field an army of plastic Cadians or a metal army of the Steel Legion, Vostroyan Firstborn, Praetorians or the Tallarn Desert Raiders. Those models were special, even if you only had 2-3 poses. They didn't fit your typical 40k style, they weren't grimdark, with their 18th-20th century uniforms they were more of a comic relief but still added quite a lot of style points to the table. And it's sad that they're gone.
Now if you want some of that old feeling, there are some manufacturers who sell models of similiar style. There's Avatars of War - Even tho after time they kind of found their own style, a lot if not all of the older models were sculpted as an addition to WH Fantasy, so you could actually build an army around them and use them for some old WHF matches. From the manufacturer Northstar there's a lot of models you could kitbash or work with green stuff to make them fit 40k or WHF, for example the Muskets & Tomahawks range or Frostgrave. The models from FireForge Games can be easily used for WHF bretons. Just to name a few. I know they're not the same as the old GW models, but sometimes we just have to make do.
Btw, even tho they probably don't fit any proxy army for a GW system, if you want some really cool metal models that no one seems to show or talk about, Warlords of Erehwon - Mythic Americas.

The old minis were sculpted by hand to be painted by hand, a lot of new ones don't really take the end hobbyist and painter into account. I think that's a big part of why a lot of people have more fun painting the old stuff.

Couldn't agree more. Designing on the computer disconnects you from the "real product". Yes, it can be made more detailed and more realistic proportioned but this way it's loosing its artistic character.

Dudes, seriously, the problem is not digital sculpting. It's overloading the modells with details and uninspired poses. This problems also occured with GWs hand sculpted modells.

I love the older "heroic" sculpted models. They are full of character with oversized detail. The newer "true scale" models from mantic look great but I have recently been painting my Reaper Bones 5 kick starter and fell in love with their cartoonish dwarves packed in the Dwarf King's Crypt encounter.
Heroic scale models have all of that going for them plus... Everyone has your vision issues in a game standing 4-6 foot away from your opponents models. Over sized hands, hold over sized weapons that make recognizing the units a whole lot easier..

As someone who has had pretty much crap eyesight their entire life- I can completely sympathize. While I like the new models- some of them are just too damn busy with the details. I still push through them but some things just don't get the paint that they probably deserve. Anyway, I struggled with seeing models while painting but got a good magnifying headset (mine is a nice Bausch & Lomb) and it was a game changer. Once I got used to it, it improved my painting more than any tool, paint or technique. I cannot paint without it.

I have always been long-sighted and need glasses to see things close up. This got worse far more quickly than it should have done. It turned that I had a large cyst that had completely displaced my pituitary gland and pushed it up into the base of my brain and my optic nerves. I had an operation to get the cyst removed, but by the time it was found (I was born with it and it had been growing until it was removed in my early 40s) the damage it had done was irreversible.
I still like painting modern models with lots of small details, but, as well as my glasses, I too use a head mounted magnifier with LEDs. I have it with two different lenses for different amounts of detail. I also need very strong lighting to see anything. I have a 2200 lumen daylight lamp that I have as close to the model as I can without it getting in the way. I do find myself preferring larger models, though, because they are easier to see.

Old, hand sculpted lead has always had a place in my heart, regardless of manufacturer.
I'm especially fond of the artwork that a sculptor has drawn inspiration from, in oldhammer its seen everywhere.
Oldhammer is my passion though, all the weird and wonderful from the golden age of games workshop, where models had character, by the bucket load regardless of faction.
Sorry to hear your situation took a turn for the worse, but watching and seeing your determination carry you through it all over the months is an inspiration to many.
Ps, an old mini is a great mini, and an even greater mini if it's painted, regardless of skill.
Hobby on chap, all the best 👍

As someone who just got into the hobby this year I love the old models, too. I wouldn't say I prefer them over the newer ones, but they do have some sort of charm that the newer ones are missing. I love the goofy 90's feel, and I think a lot of them still hold up very well today. Regardless of whether or not I can get any of my wargamer friends to play it with me, I'll definitely be getting a classic dwarves army whenever Warhammer the Old World gets going.

I have been painting miniatures off and on since before these models ever hit the shelves. My own eyesight has degraded( I am currently awaiting new glasses). I have been able to still pull off some good paint jobs by purchasing an LED headband magnifier and using a wrist brace to keep my hand steady. I loved this style of Citadel model and they were for sure fun to paint. I cut my teeth on Grenadier and Ral Partha using old school enamel and lead based paints. It was amazing to me when I went back to painting after a decade or so and found that acrylics had taken over and were so better to use! I hope you get glasses soon and enjoy your channel!

Older minis have just as much detail as newer ones, it's just that they're far clearer and defined compared to modern minis. I despair looking at some modern models because of the sometimes complex and always present details like filigree, glassware, tiny fragile details that you often can't properly reach due to how the models are made.
I used a few older ghoul models for my FEC and they were so easy to highlight compared to newer models, as you pointed out on the dwarves. I recently did a classic metal ogre tyrant, compare that with the new one with all its minute details hidden on it.
The best models in my book were always Mordheim ones -- every model had character, by design, without any obvious leading elements. The sisters of sigmar in particular were great, I have an augur in my model box in case I ever do a cities army.

I really like the new Warhammer stuff but the older stuff does still get me more excited. I think its because in a lot of respects its simpler and more cartoony that reminds me more of comic book characters than the grim/dark of more modern stuff. I also tend to paint the older modules more colourful as it seems to suit them better,=.

Same here. The older I get I noticed my eyes have an easier time if you offer them a "tidy" surface for them to sink in, so later stages feel way more comfy than the initial primed blob.
Also noticed eyes jump a lot focusing here and there, so flat item less background helps me too.

Hi Luke, I've always had problems with getting my base coats in nice & clean too. I only really started to enjoy my painting once I got my eyes checked and was told to wear glasses for reading, computer work and obviously painting.
To help me see the detail, a couple of years ago I changed the way I undercoated. I use a white airbrush undercoat, then I use a very thin Vallejo sepia wash. I'm quite careful with it, and it just sinks into the edges. It helps me keep the base coats nice and neat, as I can see the edges very nicely. Just thought that this tip might help you out.
Much thanks for all the great videos over the years. You've definitely helped motivate me many times.

I can really relate to the part about prefering older miniatures over the new ones, because I completely agree that old sculpts has so much more character while the new ones feels over-the-top and in need of some good edits (less is more, am I right?). I love old metal dwarf models myself, and I have been collecting them for over 10 years. I have amassed a huge collection, and I began painting my first dwarfs last year during lockdown. I suffer with bad eyes as well. When I was 17/18 (back in 1998) I had a coldsore on my left eye, and when it healed I got scarring on the eye. This forced my right eye to become super dominant and it's been that way ever since. Between having this happen and moving to the US in 2018, all the UK and Irish opticians I saw said they couldn't do anything about it. Then I go see someone in the US and they suggest trying a hard contact whish would trap liquid beihind to fill in the scarring and give a better image. It's taken some getting used to, but the change it's made has been crazy and it feels like my right eye gets to relax a little now. It will never be 20/20 in that eye, but it's so much better and helps with painting minis - especially as it helps more with depth perception than most other things.
Keep up the good work, and glad your eyes have the all clear now!

I do prefer the older models as they have something the later models seem to not have…..character. I agree, you have to enjoy what your doing otherwise it ain’t worth doin. My paint jobs won’t win prizes but I have enjoyed painting every single one to the level of detail I can manage with the skills I have. Thanks for sharing this vid…..like all your vids it re-centers me and gets me back into painting and playing.

You have my sympathies. I hit that about 25 years ago.One day I was able to paint 60 Space Marines with no artificial aids whatsoever. Next thing I know I need glasses for up close work. And now I need the magnifying lenses over my glases if I am to have any hope of seeing things up close. But on the bright side there is plenty of hardware to help. Still hasnt affected you videos - enjoyable, informative and inspirational. Keep them coming.

I have issues with my vision after getting Lasik. Killed my night vision and i get glare with light in low light conditions. I really understand what you went through with those vision issues. Glad things are getting better and honestly it makes me realize that perhaps I should see someone to see if i can fix the issues i suffer from. Great video man thanks for opening up about this

I like both the old and new models. I started playing Warhammer Fantasy/40k in 1993, so I’ve seen a lot of models come and go (and some stick around way longer than they should). I do think the older models have a lot more character especially in the Fantasy Range and the older Space Orks. I too am loosing my vision, so I know your pain when painting all the details on the newer models. Love your channel, keep up the great work!

I too have eye problems, too many laser treatments in my opinion. I have had a cataract removed, my eye cut open and additional laser treatment done from the inside. I have recently ordered dark sunglasses because my eyes hurt like hell in the bright sunlight and when I come inside, I have a terrible time adjusting to the light change…essentially, I am blind for a short bit until my eyes adjust. I am an arm chair painter because of the difficulty. I also have lost most of my vision in my left eye. I think that I will give terrain ago, I watch many of you artists and I know that I can’t measure up to you guys but if I don’t do something, I’ll go stark raving mad ! Keep posting, I’ll watch, Thanks!

Sorry to hear about what you have been through recently, you are definitely a trooper and im glad to hear that you are on the mend :) I agree with your mantra about the hobby, you just have to enjoy yourself when painting models. I adore those old sets and the Long Drong slayers i think are amazing, that whole army of the Dogs of War was something that i loved when seeing the models in White Dwarf - i wish i had all of mine from back in the day!
I agree with you about the detail of some miniatures these days, they take forever to paint and ive actually got bored painting some - which is rare for me as im a pretty positive guy in general haha
I love metal models and for me Middle Earth is my main focus for my collection, not over detailed, they dont come in 4256 pieces on a sprue and they all have a bunch of character to them!
I hope that you move ahead and be able to paint more and enjoy it, look forward to the next video! :)

Gotta agree with you Luke, the old models have so much more character than the mass produced highly detailed plastics that you get nowadays. I also have a soft spot for the old Citadel dwarves, and i'm trying to get the first few i ever painted. Glad your eyesight is getting better fella, that's one of my fears - loosing my eyesight so i can't paint miniatures.

Totally empathise here Luke. I've just turned 50 and I find the level of detail on new models is a pain. I painted a Bolt action army in less time than it's taken to paint the new Kill Team Ork Kommandos just because of all the little details. My favourite model range is Burrows and Badgers. Great characterful metal mins with enough detail but not too much. They paint so quickly and easily they are pure pleasure. Admittedly I also love the anthropomorphic animal aesthetic and the low model count skirmish style game.

I love old 80s and 90s minis! I‘m a big fan of the old marauder dwarfs 🙂
I think you nailed it when you said they have loads of character.
Part of the charm is that they are imperfect. Because they were sculpted by hand, they feel more organic and less like a perfect 3D computer model. It‘s like comparing garage rock with electronic music - sure there‘s some rough edges, but that‘s what makes it feel real.

If a dwarf model isn't 45% finished by the time I get done painting hair ... then I'm usually disappointed in the model. I do like these citadel dwarves they're some of my favorite dwarf minis.

I've recently being painting a squad of the newer chaos space marines but found myself struggling to see and make out allot of the details like case in point on the helmets now have this super tiny in tricate trimming round the eyes mouth grill and back of the head and horns that I was legitimately struggling to see never mind paint. But very recently I bought on ebay a light up magnifying glass on a mechanical arm and the difference it makes its amazing. I can now not only see but accurately paint this borderline microscopic trimming on the helmets which themselves are only slightly larger than a ball bearing. I intially just toyed with the idea on and off because I thought they looked cool but it's proven incredibly useful and helpful and has resparked my interest in collecting chaos space marines.

I feel you on this. I'm older than you and my eye sight is naturally deteriorating but at faster pace than they should. I totally agree on simplicity of old school minis. You also have many of the boutique miniatures manufacturers like Hasslefree and Northumbrian Tin Soldiers (I think you had one of those in the intro).
I reached the point where I would paint eyes purely on experience, then take a photo with my phone, zoom in to see if I even hit the right place! My wife got me a lamp with magnifying glass. That's been super useful, plus I got some proper reading glasses.
But I still agree on overly decorated minis. They are less fun.
The other thing I'm enjoying more and more of, is terrain building.

Yeah man, I feel that those models are so attractive because they have enough simplicity to be easy to paint, but enough stuff on them to give plenty of character. I think that GW hit the nail on the head in the late 90s to the early 2000s, my dwarf army from then is one of my favorites and I still pit it on the table against newer armies and it has looked great every time.

I'm going though the same thing Luke, I am in my early 30's and I find it really hard to see details some times, even with 3x readers. I recently printed off some of the Archvillian games dwarf Geomances to enter a local paint comp and while they model is amazing the details were so small I couldnt see it very well and it shows in the paint job. So I feel you but I love painting so much so stay in there!

As someone who just got into the hobby painting and collecting personally. I grew up with a friend who’s dad was massive into the hobby 18-20 years ago so I’ve always been on the outside looking in and I can remeber going over into his basement and looking at the models and all the gaming tables and thinking how damn cool they were and how incredible it was that someone could paint something so tiny so well so now that
I’m in the hobby myself and have money to spend on it I find my self hunting for these old models that bring back such great memories of such a good time
Of my life and the nostalgic feeling even though I didn’t get to enjoy them like I would now, now I am able to enjoy them, man… yeah the new models might be so much more complex and have these ultra fine details but they lack PURE character and these old models have them in abundance!

Glad they're getting your vision sorted. That's good news, indeed. As for this style model, which I call "cartoony", I love them. They've always seemed for more fun, to me. Now, I am no figure painter, but I do prefer the look of less detailed models far more than the current trend of seeing every little detail. Also, I will always prefer a metal mini, over plastic, but that's secondary

I can see a definite niche in 3d printing minis for the more decrepit painters. I certainly like minis that I can see. Heroic minis are definitely the way to go; Dwarves and Goblins, especially.

    • @arnolfostandolfi9730
      @arnolfostandolfi9730 2 роки тому

i truly think the problem lies in the possibilities of printing, and how it works, very different process from old casting, that imposed limitations. the artist of the time managed to use the boundries of said limitations to push the design of the old sculpts to embrace the problems of casting into their designs and that's what gives a lot of character to older minis, limitations and problemsolving is not a malus, it's an improovement on design most of the time, basically too much freedom is what kills the character of newer sculpts, in my humble opinion

I have never been in to Warhammer, but I have to say I do agree with you. Those models have character in spades. I think what I like most about them is that they really look like YOUR army. Each one has a bit of you in it, and if I were sitting across the table from you, they are who I would expect to face. I can even hear you doing their voices. 😉

Love this video! I’ve got vision problems because of diabetes, so I feel your pain! I also love vintage Citadel minis. A lot of the newer stuff looks like a video game character, cool and detailed. A lot of the vintage stuff looks more like comic book characters. Not hating on the new stuff, I love the Nighthaunts, but retro Citadel makes me happy. My favourite bits in my collection is the Against the Wall Gang and the Inconvenienced Dwarf. I can understand your frustration as my other half over the past 18 months has also had a number of eye surgeries to fix detached retinas, fortunately he had success with the reattaching, though the macula hole surgery failed and the other eye retina detached before follow up surgery could be scheduled, but at least one eye was saved which was better than neither. He had a long wait after that until he got the first cataract surgery, which has made a huge difference to his vision. It is a hereditary problem in his family and his older brother wasn't as fortunate. Now he has varifocals he is able to do things he couldn't for nearly 2 years. During that time he started getting into warhammer and obviously struggled with assembling and painting until his new glasses, though I helped him best I could (I'm disabled myself so I was more often exhausted and in agony, but we got through it largely thanks to the moral support from our dog). I've ended up with varifocals as well and they've been a great difference for model making and hopefully they'll be a help when I get back to track building for the model railway.
Hopefully your new glasses will help you too when you get them. Is cataract surgery a option? For my other half it changed his vision significantly to the point he could see without his glasses for the first time in 43 years.
