What’s in Cuba’s Monthly Food Distribution?

- It's a great idea - provide everyone the staples they need at a fraction of the market rate. Until it runs out...
_____________
Even Castro realized that you can’t learn on an empty stomach, so in 1962 he started giving everyone a monthly food distribution. All you need is a ration booklet.
It gets you rice, beans, and a host of other dry goods. And it’s all incredibly cheap:
• Sugar’s a penny a pound.
• Oil’s less than two cents.
• Salt is practically free.
In fact, the entire distribution costs about $1.20 - That’s 40 times cheaper than the open market. In an effort to save money, cigarettes were taken off the distribution list, along with certain hygiene products, like toothpaste. Cubans now have to pay two day’s wages for a brand name bar of soap and almost as much for the local kind.
It’s not a high-tech system - everything’s still done by hand. But it seems to work, and the manager is extremely well organized. Unfortunately, the distribution only provides about half your necessary daily calories and each year they cut it back even more.
The meat distribution across the street used to include fish, chicken, sausage, and sometimes eggs. Nowadays if they have anything at all, it’s blended soybean paste.
Once they sell out they just lock their doors until next month.

I had a Cuban coworker who described what it was really like. Her mom still lived there abs she said that her mom had to get beef on the black market. Only people who have family abroad can afford that. Otherwise, you live on starvation rations. She also said that the buildings were so old that every now and then there’d be a collapse. So those among us in democratic countries who are idealizing communism have no idea what it’s really like living that way!!! It’s so sad!
Yeah but Bernie Bros...
I think you forgot that Cuba has been under an Embargo and sanctions for quite a few decades. I think it would also be important for you study how Democratic Centralism functions and world history in general. The US has been. Keeping several Latin American countries poor for their own benefit. Please tell me what democracy we have in the US?
It aint Kansas or Florida living thats for sure but Cuba doesn't have children/families living in landfills with no education in countries with high murder rates from cartels, kidnapping, rape and monthly salaries under $150 a month. And to think those countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Haiti, Brazil just to mention a few, are countries with "democracies" and "freedom". There is always 2 sides of the coin. ✌️
@@dragonore2009 Bernie bros are social democrats. Social democracies like the Nordic countries are capitalist and colonalist.
There is nothing wrong in communism only Capitalism demonizing this ideas, Democratic countries intend to sanctions this countries so that people will overthrow their government and Capitalist Countries can control and exploit their resources if Global economy were fair, it will be a balance...
Kind of eerie that the Narrator sounded so enthusiastic about this.
Disgusting, Castro didn't live like that🤢
And his brother doesn't today, but the Cuban people still do. Watch, When Raul is finally gone they'll turn Cuba right back into what it was before and make billions...an Island casino.
a bar of soap costs 2 days wages ?
dream on, there is no soap available for years, and if you find it on the black market it costs you a more than a month wages
What?😮😮😮 it's absolutely awful. Communism is hell on earth. I understand why they re all trying to leave....😢
I'm only 90 miles away and my heart goes out 2 theses People ❤
fake internet sympathy! send them money then!!!
I will never forget!!!
So if they are old or sick and cant work they live on starvation rations?
No incorrect. The working class get the starvation rations. The old get by with what they can. The die.
They can only make it look good for about a minute and twenty-six seconds before it all goes down hill.
As a PROUD JAMAICAN I SAY: FREE CUBA!!! CUBA LIBRE!!!!!
This is almost 2024!!!! This should not be happening in a country which has ALWAYS overflowed with such (CHARISMATIC) POTENTIAL!!!
QUE ES ESTO??????!!!!!!!!
LIBERTAD! LIBERTAD! LIBERTAD!!
Thank you do much for telling thevWorl part of our reallity
It seems to work?
End the Embargo and Sanctions!
end communism
You will own nothing and be happy?
In heaven, one wants for nothing...
But seriously, though - this is the result of American meddling. The US won't allow merchant ships docking in Cuba to dock in American ports for 6 MONTHS afterwards, is it surprising there are shortages?

Cuba gets food aid from the US. The real problem is the Cuban government's import bans.
that's communism
When you think Cuba’s communist because you’re poorly educated and indoctrinated by Western Media
@@enthusiastisch1922 Claro, porque el partido que gobierna Cuba no se llama "Partido Comunista" hahahaha
Socialism

Every other 3rd world dictator's favorite excuse.
to hell with socialism and God bless America.
It's you Americans who caused this - with your embargo, sanctions, and incessant meddling.

Frankly, it's a testament to socialism that the country's still standing.
@@theregalproletariat
The US caused nothing, comrade!
And that my friends is socialism for you. At first they offer you great stuff but at the end you are given nothing.
Maybe if the state could afford more food for example if countries allowed international trade and didn’t immediately try to attack and destroy them mhm(the US) they would have more to distribute do you honestly think the resources are just magically disappearing because of socialism or maybe consider they don’t have much to distribute in the first place so this is way better than most people not being able to afford anything and the rich elite buying more than they need
You don't think the American embargo, sanctions, and incessant meddling have anything to do with it?

No. Sanctions, embargoes and foreign meddling are not valid excuses for local tyranny and mismanagement.
