I think so, talented players and probably harder to beat than the invincibles when things aren't going their way. Plus their football was also fun to watch unlike Chelsea's. Man City I don't count because the ridiculous amount they spend without almost any player from their academy

Premier League title, FA Cup winners, Champions League winners, Intercontinental Cup winners and 3 PL title in a row (99;00;01). That 99's CL final is just classic and one of the most inspiring games ever in history of sports.

@SBM Yeah and ManUtd were still obviously better because that 99 team still retained their PL title...and again the following year... and that's not even including most players were also involved in the 96 PL & FAcup double and 97 PL win so they won 5 PL's in 6 seasons from 96 to 01 when Arsenal can't ever even get 2 in a row (the 1 ManUtd didn't win RoyKeane was injured all season 97/98 and ManUtd still only lost by 1 point because Arsenal took maximum points off ManUtd with 1 game being controversial the 3-2 Arsenal win at Highbury ManUtd had at least 1 stone wall pen turned down at 2-2 in a must win game for Arsenal), ManUtd won 8 PL's in 11 seasons from 93 to 03. It's obviously ManUtd. If it was just judged only on number of PL losses in a season it would be 03/04 Arsenal but that would be a fucking stupid waste of time having a discussion because you just look at the losses amount and no point in having the programme but it shouldn't be judged like that anyway, there's more luck involved in winning the odd title here and there with 1 being like that, how many you win says a lot more...and let's be honest Arsenal were lucky to go unbeaten that PL season and they weren't as free flowing as people say they were, how many team's have won the PL with more than 73 goals, quite a few, quite a few have lost the title with way more than 73 PL goals and they never retained a PL title and didn't even come close to winning the champions league that season and still haven't won the competition fullstop, only once a finalist they've been shite in the competition to be fair and even forgetting ManUtd's high standards, Arsenal themselves managed to get to a cup final every season from 1999/00 to 2006/07....apart from 03/04 funnily enough.

As good as Man City were last season, the lack of competition they had from the top 6 needs to come into question. Arsenal were awful, Chelsea weren't much better, Liverpool were only good in Europe, Spurs were lackluster and Man Utd, despite coming second, were still really poor. Man City had no competition. If that Man City team had played 10-15 years ago, would they have accumulated 100 points? I highly doubt it.

They technically didn't almost go unbeaten. Barca almost went unbeaten in 2017/18.
Chelsea had already lost a game with 3 quarters of the season to play. In fact the timing of their loss was when they were quite concerned with their season so far, because they'd dropped 7 points and weren't top and had only scored 8 goals in 9 games which included own goals/penalties/goals from corners etc...They had many narrow wins so the fact they lost 1 game narrowly isn't unlucky either.

Big reasons why 98/99 is still considered the best ever team in the league:
    1) Context, competition and thrill
    2) They had a great squad outside their starting XI that no other team did. They won the UCL without Scholes and Keane in midfield because they had Butt and Blomqvist. They had 2 of the best back up strikers in the league in Sheringham and Ole who would get into any top 6 side today (little context for why Man City is not considered as much tho they're def top 3)
    3) The best ever team in the EPL should be a team that has represented the league in Europe and been successful doing so. For English football, nothing will come close to it except another treble. Maybe if this Man City team wins the treble they would get the edge because of their sophisticated and eye-catching style.

    • @afifmajid8754

I get all those points, but surely for this argument excellence should be placed over entertainment so its 07/08 for just pure consistency. And if a team HAD to represent in europe as a qualifier, Leicester would automatically have been disqualified

    • @neilmalu3994
      @neilmalu3994 5 років тому

Yep excellence should be placed over entertainment but the greatest ever have something in addition to excellence - nerve and grit. The greatest teams imo have to overcome the biggest odds and have the "clutch" mentality. Also Leicester should not even be considered for this discussion. Ian Wright summed it up perfectly - great achievement, not a great team (which was proven the next season).

And the way they won the champions league. It was harder to qualify for because there were 24 team's not 32... and it was harder to reach the knockouts because you had to win your group or be 1 of the 2 best runners up out of all the 6 group's. Nowadays if team's get both Bayern and Barca in their group people would say that's a tough group to try and finish 2nd in. But in 1997/98 & 1998/99 you couldn't even play for 2nd in a group like that because only 2 out of the 6 2nd place team's advanced.

    Arsenal 04
    United 94
    Chelsea 10
    Arsenal 98
(If you win a champions league, you are the best team in Europe that season which is more impressive than just being the best in England. None of these other teams were ever the best in the world. The two United teams were.
The Mourinho Chelsea team were very, very impressive and could easily have been in Istanbul that season if it wasn't for terrible refereeing officials against Liverpool. They talk about the points record on this programme, but I still think Chelsea's 95 is more impressive than City's 100. The teams Chelsea had to face to win the league (Arsenal invincibles, Ferguson United, Liverpool-the european Champions) were all much better than the teams City had to face last season. Also the defensive record of only conceding 15 is almost inconceivable looking back. They're ahead of the invincibles for me because they literally bested them the next season-the exact team, they proved they were better. Also they won another trophy too and went on to retain the title the following season.
City's team last season were exceptional at times. How De Bruyne didn't win POTY I'll never know. 100 points its an amazing achievement and will only be achieved again the next time somebody comes into the premier league and revolutionises English football again. The fact that they're goalkeeper was better with his feet than a massive percentage of outfield players really says it all. Additionally they won another competition and broke the record for the most goals showing how entertaining and dominant they were. The reason they are only fourth in my list is because they had no competition. They're closest challengers were a terrible United team and the fact that they managed to get over 80 points kind of shows that the league was actually very poor last season. Still though, I reckon they'd give the other teams in this list a run for their money.
The invincibles were obviously an outstanding team, but I do agree the fact that they seemingly sacrificed the champions league all in search of the record was a bit of an oversight. Henry once again proved himself to be the best striker in the leagues history and absolutely terrorised defences. They played good football as well. They were also a very intimidating side with lots of big players and would best anyone if they wanted to have a physical battle. Despite this they didn't do well in other competitions and couldn't retain the league the following season as soon as a worthy challenger emerged.

Alvin Lam, I think it is relevant because regardless of what competition they are in it is the same premier league side. It also shows how good they were that they were the best in Europe. It also takes a great team compete on so many levels and play such high importance games every three days in the latter part of the season.

      @alvinlam21 5 років тому +8

Joesph Cole, I'm not saying it isn't, I'm saying this is a video about premier league success, not European success. It's not about being the best in Europe, this video is about the best of the Premier League. Best of Europe is for another video. For the sake of this video, the CL isn't relevant so you can't really count it as an achievement (even though of course it is outside the PL). You can't let winning the CL distract you from Premier League success. And what AFC did in the Premier league is worthy of at least being top 3 in the list.

He was referring to Arsenal's defence in the 90's. Not necessarily their 97/98 defensive record although they still had a fair amount of clean sheets but for example the following season they only conceded 17 in the PL.
He played against that defence, he didn't play against Chelsea's defence.

Would be really interesting to see this discussion now that City and Liverpool now have teams that could arguably be seen as top three. City could win treble this season, and Liverpool with their 99 points season. Liverpool also got 97 points and got second which is insane considering their record was 30 W, 7 D, and 1 L, all the while they won the CL that season. Great discussion

Depends. On PL performance alone it must be the team who achieved the most points, Chelsea or City now. Over a season it has to be the treble winners, United. The invincibles were a great side but, evidently, not as good as City chelsea or United (you can go down without losing). Also, the United treble winners went on to win the PL at a canter for two more seasons so, overall, it's a no brainer. United 1999-2001.

    • @cddb5408
      @cddb5408 5 років тому +2

Both great team's but it's got to be the team who won more trophies which was 98/99. Because even if you say ManUtd battered Portsmouth in FAcup 08 and were unlucky, ManUtd dealt with a lot of bad luck and adversity during many games in 98/99 but found something from someone to get through it and still win all 3 trophies.
Also it was harder to win the champions league in 1998/99 because there were only 24 team's in the group stages instead of 32 (and a lot more "champions" to compete against) and only the teams who topped their group or the best 2 runners up reached the knockouts. Most team's who finished 2nd in the group didn't advance so ManUtd did well to manage that alone considering they had both Bayern and Barca in their group when it wasn't just a case of trying to finish top2 but top or 1 of the 2 best runners up out of all the groups.
I'm not saying ManUtd didn't top their group in 07/08, they did and very comfortably (although it was a lot weaker teams) I'm just saying the tasks for the 98/99 team I feel were harder from the start but they still won the perfect treble.

On the one hand that 90's United had that fantastic achievement of being the first and only ones to do the treble, and had many great season defining moments. On the other hand the 07/08 United had a higher level of quality and the competition around them was a lot better. It was back when our top 4 were dominating Europe.

I kinda feel sorry for the United side of 1993/94 because we were restricted to only playing a maximum of 3 non English players in Europe due to a ban on English teams thanks to the Scousers actions in the 80’s. our starting eleven then:
    Schmeichel
    Parker Bruce Pallister Irwin
    Kanchelskis Keane Ince Giggs
    Cantona Hughes
We could only play 3 foreign players in Europe out of: Schmeichel Irwin Kanchelskis Keane Giggs Cantona and Hughes. If we didn’t have that restriction I genuinely believe that side would’ve been the 1st treble winners.

I feel like its best to look at a few year time spans, however you could break it down into best single domestic season, best season overall, and best three year span. I will try to come at this unbiasedly as a RM fan.
Important metrics for multiyear: More PL titles the better. Ideally at least 1 UCL. Dominant style (perhaps backed up with records). Toughness of competition domestically and in europe. Performance against rivals (doesn't look great to lose in Europe to domestic rival).
    Ranking based on different metrics:
    Best domestic performance 1 year:
    1. Man City: ridiculous records broken, during highest level of competition without a truly great rival
    2. Chelsea: record breaking with tough opposition, unfortunately records have since been broken
    3. Arsenal: invincibles, perhaps in a time of transition for rivals
    4. Man United 07/08: Great domestic campaign if a bit short of truly legendary
    5. Man United 98/99: Lots of draws and losses domestically, but showed great resolve and character
    Best 1 year performance:
1A. Man United 1998/1999: treble and really tough european opposition. Not great domestically and not great competition
1B. Man United 2007/2008: double over tough domestic competition, fairly easy UCL draw and beat a domestic rival in final
    3. Man City 2017/2018: Two trophies, tons of records, 100 points, but went out in QF to a domestic rival, records may have been broken even with continued presence in UCL but it certainly helped them reach loftier totals
    4. Chelsea: Two trophies, tons of record, went out in SF to a domestic rival
    5. Arsenal: Undefeated, but lost to to domestic rival in QF and lost in other cups so the undefeated feels like yeah but...
    Best multiyear:
1A. United 98-01: Treble, three premier leagues, 1 UCL, one record setting domestic season, not too much domestic competition outside of Arsenal
1B. United 06-09: UCL, three premier leagues with great but not legendary seasons, no records, two UCL finals, lots of domestic competion (official era of top 4),
Chelsea 04-07: Two premier leagues, one record setting season followed by another truly great domestic season, no european wins
Arsenal: Two premier leagues, one truly legendary season undefeated (49 total games), however never quite did it in Europe and didn't have the toughest domestic competion.
Man City: truly legendary single season domestic campaign, but we will have to wait and see if they go on to win more PL's and perhaps a UCL.

    1. ManUtd 98/99 is the best team... they didn't score the most goals, they didn't win the most games... but they won the treble and were consistent for a few seasons after.
    2. ManUtd 07/08 is the next beat team... that team could beat any team out there. Any team that wins premier league and champions league is impressive.
    3. Man City 17/18 this team COULD BE the best team... they're the most impressive... the points, the record, the way they played, 1-2 more titles they would be the best.
    4. Chelsea 04/05 they played great football and were super impressive.
    5. Arsenal 03/04 "invincibles" close battle with chelsea for 4th... it's an amazing achievement not to lose a game but 12 draws just means they were hard to beat but didn't beat everyone.

I agree with almost all of that. Although I'll say something that won't be agreed with by too many people. As well as Chelsea 04/05 like you've done I'd also put ManUtd 93/94 just above Arsenal 03/04. Arsenal 03/04 didn't win anything other than the PL and didn't even get to a cup final which they managed to do every other season from 1999/00 to 2006/07. ManUtd won a 42 game PL season with only 4 losses, won the shield, won the FAcup winning 4-0 in the final and got to the final of the LeagueCup and they had a dream team in my opinion. They also didn't resort to Arsenal's 03/04 thuggery and had a lot more honest players than the many cheats Arsenal had around the so called invincible era.

@@AA_lcfc I think you're confusing 'Greatest Ever Achievement' (which I wholeheartedly agree with Wright as Leicester 15/16) and 'Best Ever PL Team' which is what has been debated here. The notion that a 'Best Ever' should be considered remarkable over others because of the lack of superstars is illogical.
For example: when asked about the Best Ever NBA championship winning team, the Bulls, Lakers, Heat's, Celtics of the modern era come to mind because of the superstars incorporated into those teams and how they came together to form an incredibly formidable group no other teams could match. People would be less likely to mention the one-off winners who achieved greatness over a season with fewer 'superstars' because they wouldn't be considered the Best.

    1. Man City- 2017-18, while the competing teams faltered a bit to allow them in, that doesn't take away from how consistently utterly dominant they were, not just the best points tally ever, but the best goal difference ever and by extension the most goals scored. too dominant to discount
    2. Arsenal -2003-04, Invincibles, nothing can take away from this achievement, the consistency needed to maintain a feat like this is remarkable.
    3. Chelsea 2004-05, up until recently, the record points total, and they remain the best defensive side in PL history by a country mile.

Yet couldn't beat a team who finished joint 5th with Bolton over 2 legs in the champions league lol
Chelsea played Liverpool at home first leg, if that Chelsea team were so good the tie would've been won for Chelsea before the 2nd leg kicked off, or at least almost won. But instead they only drew 0-0 and also failed to score away....Chelsea fans go on about Liverpool's goal not being a goal (rich coming from Chelsea but anyway....) you can't expect to go through without scoring any goals over 2 legs. The LuisGarcia goal should've given Chelski extra incentive to get a goal they would've needed anyway to avoid unnecessary extra time and lottery shootout, they would've still progressed with a 1-1 but they failed and you say they could play any way??
The following season with almost the exact same squad but actually some improvement signings Chelsea also didn't impress in the champions league.
I do think they were much better than for example the 09/10 team which shouldn't even be on here but let's be honest Chelsea 2004-2006 still weren't as amazing as you make out. They did enough to win the PL but failed in Europe. Their defensive record looks good on paper but they were very defence minded so it's not surprising and they didn't blow many teams away despite spending shit loads.
So unless you are a very biased Chelsea fan it's strange to say Chelsea 04/05 and even add "no question"??
In reality they won the league & a mickey mouse cup. They have 1 record that still stands, 15 PL goals conceded but that's not enough to beat some of ManUtd's team's & ManCity 2018.

You can’t miss a team that at one point had Terry, Lamps, Drogba, A.Cole, an inform Luiz, Eden hazard, Oscar, Cech and a handful of other world class players coming in and out of the club like Eto’o, And fillipe luiz and not be considered closer top the top. @@shadeofquran lol probably because both seasons they followed them up with poor seasons failing to even qualify for the champions league (including 10th place in 15/16 and winning nothing).
When you look at how many other team's on this list won back-to-back PL title's and in ManUtd's case 3 in a row twice and 4 out of 5 on 3 separate occasions (93,94,96&97...99,00,01&03...07,08,09&2011)....and Chelsea couldn't even come close to retaining it those seasons (05/06 The only time they have retained a PL was actually the only time they ever looked like doing so) so they were weren't that great and I actually thought Spurs were the best team in 2016/17, scored more, conceded less, there were just a couple of turnarounds in games that swung points in Chelsea's favour, the 1-3 Chelsea win at the Etihad was a freak turnaround after DeBruyne missed from 3yards would've been 2-0. A head-to-head match with Spurs where Spurs were winning etc...Spurs won more games more comfortably than Chelsea but what it came down to was Chelsea had many more lucky results.
Also 14/15 was only Chelsea's 2nd PL title in 9 seasons and the only reason it wasn't their only 1 since 2005/06 was because they cheated to nick 2009/10. But they hadn't won many so you can't put them on there just because they concentrated on that competition more in 14/15 because it had been so long for a big spending team like Chelsea to not win the PL....but in 14/15 they were eliminated at home in the champions league to a team with a numerical disadvantage which is pretty poor in all honesty and its not the first time that's happened in the Chelski era....Many of ManUtd's champions league exits were unlucky and included them getting the red card and some harsh ones but not the other way round and still losing....at home.

    1. *Manchester United 2006-09*
The culmination of Alex Ferguson’s career at Manchester United. The manager drew on many of the disparate strands of his time at the club to arguably produce his greatest team.
First of all, Ferguson summoned his famed resolve to respond to Jose Mourinho’s raising of the bar. United unexpectedly dislodged Chelsea from the top of the Premier League with points hauls around the 90 mark.
To do that, his inherent sense of adventure had created the most prolific attacking trio Old Trafford had ever seen. The manner in which Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha/Carlos Tevez interchanged and exchanged positions also placed Ferguson as a tactical pioneer for the first time in his career.
But, by then, the acumen he had tortuously acquired over so many seasons in Europe helped set one of England’s meanest defences.
It all added up to a finely balanced team and - with three consecutive league titles, a Champions League as well another final - the most concentrated period of success in United’s history.
Ultimately, their span was ended by Spain. Real Madrid lured Cristiano Ronaldo away while Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona lifted continental football to another level with the 2-0 win in Rome.
    Trophies won: Champions League 2008; Premier League 2007, 2008, 2009; League Cup 2009; Champions League runners-up 2009
    Manager: Alex Ferguson
Best XI: Van der Sar; Brown, Evra, Vidic, Ferdinand; Hargreaves, Carrick, Giggs; Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo
    2. *Manchester United 1998-01*
Whatever about the performance in the 1999 Champions League final itself, the injury-time crescendo was actually a fitting way for Manchester United to end that scarcely believable season. Over the 59 games of the three competitions they won, Alex Ferguson’s team scored 13 late winners - five of them in stoppage time. They also came from losing positions to win on 15 separate occasions. Both are records.
Evidently, this was a side with an awful lot of character. As assistant manager Steve McLaren said, “I don’t think this team ever loses. It just runs out of time.” It was a quality personified by Roy Keane and the core of youth graduates such as Paul Scholes, as well as complemented by a glorious sense of adventure. Ultimately, those attributes brought a unique treble, 97 league goals the following season, a then record points haul and only the English league’s fourth three-in-a-row.
But United were also offset by an inherent haphazardness that ensured reclaiming the Champions League was always hostage to fortune. They may have outfought all-comers but they also had the eternal capacity to be out-thought. Vicente Del Bosque said he was shocked by the side’s “tactical anarchy” as Real Madrid put them out at the quarter-finals in 1999-2000. Ferguson wouldn’t lift the Champions League again until he had learned and agonised over his lesson. In the meantime, a magnificent team blazed a trail all too briefly.
Trophies won: Champions League 1999; Premier League 1999, 2000, 2001; FA Cup 1999
    Manager: Alex Ferguson
Best XI: Schmeichel; Neville, Irwin, Stam, Johnsen; Keane, Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Yorke, Cole
    3. *Chelsea 2004-07*
The best team never to win the Champions League? Chelsea’s points totals in 2004-05 and 2005-06 constitute the highest points-per-game averages in the history of the English game. The biggest compliment that can be paid to Mourinho is that, essentially, he ensured you dare not make more than one error if you had any notions of winning the league.
At times, Chelsea were utterly relentless. But, crucially, not invincible. For all of the highly personal battles that Mourinho won, he ultimately lost three times to his Bete Noirs in the competition he wanted most: twice in the Champions League semi-finals to Rafa Benitez, once in the last 16 to Barcelona. All in acrimonious circumstances.
That, of course, is exactly how you could describe Mourinho’s departure. It may have provided some vindication that they got to the final later that season. But Chelsea’s failure to win the Champions League still stands against an otherwise intimidating team.
Trophies won: Premier League 2005, 2006; FA Cup 2007; English league cup 2005, 2007
    Manager: Jose Mourinho
Best XI: Cech; Ferreira, Gallas, Carvalho, Terry; Makelele, Lampard, Essien; Robben, Duff, Drogba
    4. *Arsenal 2001-05*
Always irresistible, sometimes incisive and - for a season - invincible. Arsenal’s unbeaten 2003-04 campaign ensures their place in history, with the difficulty of that feat a perfect complement to the occasionally unbelievable angles of their passing. It was also Arsene Wenger’s undoubted career high-point. Appropriately though, it emphasised his extremes as a manager too. For a start, the team’s cycle was bookended by two very contrasting summers. In 2001, Wenger embarked on an untypical spending spree. In 2005, Patrick Vieira departed while complaining of a dearth of world-class signings.
In between, Arsenal’s exquisite football regularly reached that status - most of all Thierry Henry. They were particularly brilliant in the 2001-02 run-in that secured a double as well as the start of the 2002-03 campaign, with the team’s own climax coming in the 5-1 win at Inter Milan in the 2003-04 Champions League. That should have signalled a successful assault on the Champions League. Instead, it only highlights the greatest mark against them: that nucleus of players never got beyond the quarter-finals.
What’s worse, they were eliminated by a team they had routinely dismissed at home. Throughout the 2003-04 campaign, Arsenal had beaten Chelsea 2-1 three times across the league and FA Cup. At Highbury and in the competition that has always eluded Wenger, however, they were undone by that same score. And that failure to beat an English team again spoke of another major flaw: they never retained the title.
A divine team, but never a truly dominant one.
    Trophies won: Premier League 2002, 2004; FA Cup 2002, 2003, 2005
    Manager: Arsene Wenger
Best XI: Lehmann; Lauren, Cole, Campbell, Toure; Gilberto, Vieira, Ljungberg, Pires; Bergkamp, Henry

To be honest you can't even give him the excuse of focussing more in other competitions for 2 main reasons
      (1) Wenger had such a poor Champions league record in general (Just 2 semi-finals he reached with Arsenal in 19 Champions league seasons, 2005/06 & 2008/09, the latter they clearly shouldn't have been there and were completely humiliated).
      (2) Arsenal didn't play weakened team's in those ChampionsLeague games they took the games seriously they just failed.
Also they were lucky to even make it through the group stage in 2003/04. They were just 2 minutes away from being eliminated in group game 4 of 6. It's not like they lit the tournament up and were just extremely unlucky not to win it or they were eliminated controversially. The first ChampionsLeague game they played that season they got thrashed at home 0-3.
Trust me ManUtd are the team who should be the most annoyed about not winning Champions league 2003/04, they were robbed vs the eventual winners and the route they would've had from QF to final was as winnable as you're likely to get in the competition. Hence why Porto went on to win it. If Arsenal were that great they would've at least played Porto in the final and Chelsea didn't even get to the final after eliminating Arsenal they lost to Monaco.

They won 3 PL titles back to back, back to back CL finals (winning one). What when they came 10th inbetween those seasons?
Also although either of those teams are more worthy to be on the shortlist than 2009/10 which shouldn't be on here, the 2014/15 team had a numerical advantage for NINETY minutes AT HOME vs Psg in the champions league last 16 and still failed to progress!
AND they lost 2-4 in the FAcup AT HOME to 3rd tier Bradford!

I think because when you won so many trophies, break the record, teams who have world class, talent players.Arsenal,Chelsea, Liverpool,Manchester clubs are up there, they’ve showed in the past to creat history, make this happen. I think everybody forgets how Blackburn Rovers,Leicester City who ever fantastic to achieve for something that wouldn’t be possible but they did it.I hope Tottenham,Everton and other teams can win in the premier league in the future which will be an another historic moment.
