I bought a slightly used 81 sport like this back in 85 in Salinas CA. I loved that truck and it did handle the curves really well. I remember racing my platoon Sgt. into work one morning on the backroads and he couldn't keep up in his 70 Chevelle. It just couldn't handle the corners as well. He hated coming in behind me so he told me I should be taking it easy as if he let me win. I could tell he was pissed.
What I like about "mini" pickup trucks of the 1980s-2000s like this Dodge d50, Toyota Hilux 4 x 4, & Mitsubishi mighty max: 1) they are NOT gigantic tanks like modern post-2005 pickup trucks. So parking at compact parking lot won't be a drag for mini pickup trucks compared to modern day pickup trucks 2) mini pickup trucks are simple in design, meaning super easy maintenance 3) mini pickup trucks don't consume too much gas like modern day pickup trucks 4) mini pickup trucks are still reliable in regards to large load carrying & don't really have to rely on modern day gigantic tanks pickup trucks to do the same large loading tasks
Still love my d50 and runs better then any car on the road reliability and gas efficiency I still get 16mpg on this old carb amazing car literally a piece of history I'm pround to drive this car only ever owned by one old man that never drove it only has 160k chassis miles
I had an 82 D50 in 1993 when I was in high school. It was my first vehicle, but I was a stupid kid and traded it for 81 vw rabbit diesel. I miss it, you hardly ever see any mini trucks now days.
you traded a d50 for a rabbit you fucking idiot? lol I am never selling my dakota. and yeah you're right minitrucks have pretty much died. I love a big truck as much as the next guy, but I have always had a soft spot for small trucks.
NO YOU DIDN'T!! omg.. I still got my 86 4x4.... I bought that truck from my dad when I was 14. And learned how to drive it on manual when I was 8..YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!!
In 1983, the Ram 50 Sport trim level had only one engine...a turbocharged 2.3L Diesel inline-4 and only one transmission...a 5-speed manual. The Sport trim level was the top-of-the-line and was offered in both 2WD and 4x4.
RyanChevy6895 I know it's a five year difference but is it really a good truck I am about to get one in a couple of weeks I just need to know if I want to fix the dents and get it repainted
I had an 1981 Ram 50 about 20 years. I had the Mikuni carburetor rebuilt & even with a small engine problem, I still got about 17 mpg. It's just so tiny that I was being laughed at. So I parked it but I am seriously thinking about dragging it out again. The main problem is you can't get alot of parts for it. I need a new valve cover. They are aluminum & cracked if you tighten bolts to tight. Does anyone know of a lift kit that might work ?
there are times i consider buying a pickup truck, however these days they're overpriced. i don't need something to haul the boat, and livestock i don't have. I would totally be game for a crossover pickup, something i can haul lawn mowers drywall and one other person up front. and get 30 mpg while being 4x4. these days they sucker your into buying their full sized stuff because they're in a sales war.
before the days of the s10, the ranger, and the dakota. light duty trucks were extremely light duty. I always called them cars for men. as in they were good daily drivers for moving furniture and some tools or whatever basic work a general contractor or gardener would do. but if you wanted to tow a trailer or go do some real work, these truck would fall on their faces. these truck were utilitarian, but they had no balls.
No balls I feel sorry for you jk. I have a 4x4 model And hauled multiple trailers with it. I also take it off road from time to time and it goes just about anywhere I want it to go while still getting me exceptional fuel mileage on the road.
@@UnderSizedBigfoot that little truck can tow trailers? I could see a small utility trailer but that truck really isn't rated for towing of any kind. those trucks don't have anything special for suspension or breaks. I have seen small trucks squat all the way down with a few bags of concrete in the bed.
@@UnderSizedBigfoot you have whats called "confirmation bias"....you own a shitbox and feel a desperate need to defend it,even though it sucks because you bought it
I always thought the mitsushitty 3.0 would have been a much better engine for this truck until of course it burns oil like they do. That same engine gave the K-Car a bad name a little but over all it was fairly powerful and somewhat modern.

To be honest this is mostly what a lot of US truck owners really need. Something like this.

Just add a weber carburetor and you have a great truck! That is if you have the 2.6 liter timing chain engine.
