- This is a Roy Ross film for Chrysler Corporation's Dodge Division for it's Dodge Demo Screen used in Dodge Dealers. This film was saved from the trash in 1980 when Sam Dell Dodge, (formerly Suburban Dodge) of Natick MA was being shut down. This was a factory owned store.
I purchased my 1974 Ramcharger brand new paid $4800.00. It still looks pristine and has 56000 miles on it.
Would love to see a video of it.
Too bad it was hardly used.

I have a 78 Ramcharger with the LA 318 in solid Woodbine Green and non vinyl Winter white top. Was my Dad's, and it still runs and drives with original engine and transmission. Has 58k on the odometer but to be honest probably has way more since it was a daily driver for my Dad, and the odometer broke 30 years ago. Very easy to work on and maintain. So glad I have this classic beast that still looks good today.
How i wish it was 1977 again
This vehicle has aged very well. It looks as good today as it did then. I'd love to have a factory fresh SE with one of the bigger V-8s. It'd be one of the coolest cars in town...more popular than ever, really.

We had a 2wd one when I was young. It's was my Dad's car and on the weekend pulled our camping trailer. Before the Ram we had an International Travel All!
I have a 77 RC. Never have seen another one with my paint combo though. Instead of the yellow/white/yellow like the one on here mines white/yellow/white. In process of restoring it and I'm going to stick with original colors and trim.

We have also have a 77 Ramcharger. My dad is the original owner, he bought it even before he got married. He would often talk about seeing the film comparing it to the Bronco and Blazer when he went to the dealer to buy it. I'm really looking forward into seeing this film. Thanks for your uploads.

My Grandpa has one of these. He used to take it all over Guam, the Everglades, and now Wyoming. We recently repaired the gas tank and fitted it back in, all it needs is a new battery, gas, fluid changes and it ought to be ready to go!
Wow, thats a real geographic change from Everglades (Where I'm from), Wyoming and Guam.
I knew an old man who had a story about a new Aspen he had bought. He had a rattle in the rear quarter panel, so he took it back to the dealer. Long story short, and several frustrating months later they couldn't fix it, so they gave him another car, and sent his car back to Chrysler to find the rattle. When they cut the quarter panel skin off they found a washer tied to a string that swung back and forth inside causing the noise. Someone in the factory had placed it there to cause the rattle.
Too bad he didn't keep driving it for those several months. Then he could have just reached through the rust hole in the quarter panel and pulled it out himself. I had a friend who had a Volare Wagon. One day they turned into the driveway and the radio antenna disappeared. It was rusted so bad that the antenna just fell into the fender well.

I miss my 74 ramcharger full convertible top. ...it had a 360 in it and literally lifted the front tires when you would stomp on the gas, it was a rust red and yellow stripes factory 70's paint scheme

I'm jealous of you guys in Mexico because, as far as I know, Mexico was the only country to get a RamCharger built from the 1994 "Big Rig" generation Dodge Ram. I know we didn't get it here in the US for reasons I've never understood.

I'm a huge Ramcharger fan. Always have been. I laugh at the fuel pacer warning light though. There's one thing that both of my RC's were not, and that's good on gas. Even the small block your looking at 10 mpg. Not until the early 90's did they finally start to get a bit more power with a little better gas mileage. Of course all that doesn't matter. It's about the truck! If it's Chuck Norris approved, then it's approved by me too.
When I worked for Chrysler (factory owned dealer zone office), it wasn't uncommon to see a Dodge Aspen with Plymouth Volare badges. Occasionally, you'd see a Volare Grill on a Dodge Aspen, the dealer would always fix it but it was kinda funny at the time. We did use to laugh about it at the dealer as they came in off the Truck.
I wanted a 1970's Ramcharger or Trailduster as my first car as a teen in the late 1980's. At that time, well-maintained examples were available all over town (Tucson, Arizona, so no rust) for around $6,000. That was impossible money for me then (and difficult now). Today, if one of these can be found at all, it is either rusted or beat to sh*t, or commands muscle car prices when rare survivors surface in good, original condition.
I have the rare 76 Plymouth Trailduster 2wheel drive that I Love. I have one of the super Rare Minnesota Truck Parts Pacesetter halfcab roof on it with a stroker 472 lowdeck.

at 1:02 you can see how off it is with the stripes. i had a 78 power wagon 440, 85 ram slant 6 and 90 d250 360, never had any issues with engine and drivetrain
The quality control at Chrysler in the late 1970s was abysmal. Lee Iacocca came in and make some immediate changes. Good or bad, the Ramcharger went through a major revision in 1980 that would last for more than a decade with only minor changes. The fit and finish improved greatly.
@@RoadCone411...I dont know where you get your facts...We owned many 70's Chryslers and I even sold them starting in 1978 as a 19 year old...
They never rattled,fell apart,they drove great and all their cars/trucks were good...Iacocca 's leadership the Volare/aspen came out and the 1st model year the front fenders had some rust issues,other than that they were tough reliable cars..they lasted until 1989(Lebaron,Diplomat,5th Avenue,Gran Fury were all Volare/Aspen's same fenders,doors,dash,windows,drivelines etc)
RamChargers were tough and reliable,no quality issues as with their cars...You are talking about people who bought beat up ,messed with used Chrysler cars from that era that a teen or younger guy abused...Try to find a quality 1990's Civic,they are all messed with so they rattle now,parts,doors,hoods dont align as they put scoops on them,cut up the interior etc..
RamCharger changed in 1981 to a fixed roof,1988 brought efi and 1992 the magnum engines..They had othe rupgrades during those years too..Remember the Blazer stayed the same from 1973-1991.Hell Toyota had the same platform for 26 years for its cars they just changed it a few years ago !!!
Chryslers were the best handling,best driving and toughest cars of that era...Yes the mid 70's cars some rattled after years of use in the 1980's due to door clips,a $4 cost to replace the clips to a rattle free driving experience again.. Nothing serious..these were well built cars,remember its the clowns who owned them who messed with them that had issues,like modern tuner cars they rattle and are junk for the most part.
01trsmar While I don’t claim to have ever owned a late 1970s Chrysler, I never ever saw one that wasn’t a total POS. My friend’s mom drove a 3-4 year old Aspen, roughly equivalent of my parent’s Fairmont at the time. The Ford may have been boring but it rarely gave us any problems. The Aspen - again, not my car and I was a kid! - sure seemed to be a heap. Trim broken off, heater fan didn’t work, transmission that clunked loudly, idiot lights that flickered on and off, that sort of thing. We used to laugh at it. I can’t even remember all of the things that went wrong, it was almost 40 years ago. I suppose some of it could have been from misuse but I have no way to judge that. My impressions - and backed up by many contemporary reports - is that the Aspen/Volare may have been solidly engineered but it was put together by an indifferent workforce who had never heard of sufficient quality control. Chrysler might have worked out many of these problems by the mid to late 1980s, but no matter how tough the Diplomat/Le Baron/Fifth Avenue might have been, I’m sorry to say it was an outdated clunker by that time.
@@RoadCone411 Chrysler had insufficient quality control, which meant that how good a car was depended on people working on line. Some Chryslers lasted decades, while others build by different person have not lasted 5 years, because of some careless worker in factory. But the problem was rather in factory workers, not engineering. Therefore if you had a luck to buy a good unit, there were not problems. The same applies to later Chrysler, in our family we have a PT cruiser that has 20 years with only repairs (other than suspension) being fan control cable and blown gasket (blown due to the overheating because of this faulty fan control cable). Not much and not expensive. You also have to remember that cost of car is also one of the lowest in case of Chrysler if you include dealer discounts. The thing that truly ruined Chrysler was when Mercedes bought them. When Germans took over manufacturing and started to suck money out of Chrysler, the quality of cars went downhill and hit the bottom in times of sebring 2.7 v6 and late production PT cruisers (which were way worse than early production).
Ramcharger and fullsize Bronco are the best trucks ever made. Nothing new comes close..🚙

Yes, I've actually been disabling any comment sections on specific uploads.....Anything new related to Dodge Aspens and Plymouth Volare as well as AMC Pacer and Matador and Gremlins. The problem is that too many people think they know the history and actually have it all wrong. It just infuriates me to know end the stupidity of some of the comments. Part of the problems is all these auto Blogs with baffoons commenting on them creating myths and group think....places like Barnfinds or Curbsideclassics and even Hemmings......they are just filling the antique auto world with myths.

Im guessing that even the 440 probably only made about 200 horsepower since they tried to make it more fuel efficient after the oil crisis. Also full-time 4wd sounds terrible for gas mileage.
I've been enjoying watching these promo films, lately. I came here from the '78 video with disabled comments. The UA-cam recommendations algorithm knows me better than I know myself. Haha. I love these old Dodges. I wasn't alive when these were new; but, watching these videos it's hard for me to believe that they were only a couple of years away from the government backed loans and Lee Iacocca taking over. The dealer sales training videos sure makes it seem like the Dodge Truck division were at least pulling their weight.
Increased sales volume doesn't necessarily equate to profitability. Chrysler was incurring significant costs on the development of the Aspen/Volare, Omni/Horizon and The R body cars and K Cars for 1980. while also incurring costs on the (at the time) most expensive recall in history (1976 Aspen/Volare Front Fenders). The reason why the Government went ahead with the Loan Guarantees (basically cosigning bank loans for Chrysler) was due to the high prospects for the Car Company and Car lines. I worked for Chrysler at the Time and we were all very up and high on the future, which is why it would reflect in the marketing material. I think there are a lot of Hack Auto Journalists that paint a pretty bad or negative picture of the time period for Chrysler and the Car industry in general. They really overstate the negatives.

I tell you what....I was surprised at the available options back then....center armrest chest cooler etc. And we thought all the options we can get today are new. Good looking vehicle.
I would have opted for the V8 but those Slant 6s were bulletproof.
We still have a truck with a slat six I tell ya it's just great really does get the job done

Still have my 83. 318 2 Barrel automatic on the column. Doesn't get drove very much anymore however. Definitely need to take it out and drive it more

Door slam makes a noise about 2 seconds after closed.
In the nineties I saw a mint low mileage ram charger at an auction. I went to 300 bucks which was everything I had at the time. Somebody else bought it for 350.

I remember in 1978 the Dodge dealerships were selling the RamCharger and Trailduster for $5 down and $ 199.00 a month. I was too young to get one. At the time my girlfriend's mom and Dad bought a beautiful Red over white over red one on that sale. That RAM Charger would climb a tree if they let it. Mopar

Nope it will All Fiat Chevy made a Cross over and stamped Blazer on it God knows what Ford is doing with the Bronco and Fiat owning Chrysler today and rebadging a Fiat 500 into a Jeep renegade would put a New Ramcharger in doom these 4×4 were discontinued for reasons for 4 door family SUVs.

I can’t imagine one of these with only the slant 6 for power, on the other hand I can’t imagine one of these with a 440 in it either.
My friend bought a Pearson stock 79 Ramcharger 360 Shortblock thing was a beast he'd go mudding with Jacked up modified trucks he'd leave them in the dust and end up pulling them out of mud. It would take a 10 foot jump with ease and the whole roof could come off and the all Vinyl interior was perfect after a day of mudding all you had to do was hose it clean!
my 1st car was a 1978 Dodge Magnum XE i got 2nd hand from the father of the original owner that totally abused it! i have no clue what that guy was thinking but he blew out 1 piston, ruined the cooling system, burned out some of the wiring with an old equalizer, destroyed the braking system to the point only the front brakes barely worked, plus many of the smaller features were broken or just not working! after more than a year of being in my uncles garage i finally got my car back after a 75% restoration and it ran great for another 14 more years! i cant really remember all that mu uncle did to the car but i was lucky enough he found another 79' Magnum in a junkyard he used for parts to make it cheap enough to fix mine! the only problem i had after the repair was electrical as my uncle didn't fully replace the harnesses that were ruined he just repaired them! my car "Maggie" met her demise when my own mother stole (borrowed without asking) her for a weekend and wrecked it driving over a center divider and basically ripping out the oil and transmission pans! she did that on purpose because she has always been jealous of Maggie! ! !
Ram Trucks, as we know it as today, should never have discontinued the Ramcharger, and instead, updated it like the current Ram 1500, as a 4-door to combat the Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon, Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and Nissan Armada.

Thanks for the video. I have the Plymouth version, the Trailduster, with a 440. Great truck. From the video, I see that the same high back seats, with the same striped cloth, were offered for both Dodge and Plymouth. Also the same fake wood trim dash that my Trailduster has.

You know, I was surprised when I looked on Ebay and found so many NOS parts for these vehicles. If you have a good solid one, it would be a great candidate to restore for sure.
+Jsalrulz the 87 and 77 are on the same platform so you can just install one in yours and it will fit into the engine bay fine.

Had one 16 years old 318 completely rusted away used can spray foam keep Cold air out and a chain hold it together

I ordered a 77 Ramcharger from New Rochelle Dodge, 360 4 speed, black sunfire metallic, carmel colored interior, white spoke wheels, 6100 ib. GVW package, skid plates and of course the beverage chest. I think it was a little over 6K out the door. Great truck, had a lot of fun with it but the build quality was pretty bad. I only ever saw two other 4 speeds.

I remember seeing that on one of the commercials on TV. As a kid I thought that it had to be the coolest thing around. Now that I watched the film here, I realize that it is only an ice chest that fits inside the console. Sheesh - I can't believe I thought it was so cool way back then. But I wish I had something similar in my 2016 pickup so that I didn't have to keep the cooler on the seat or the floor...

They were full time 4x4, no locking hubs, which was not fuel efficiency friendly. My cousin had a 77 that he used to brag up pretty good, until he challenged me to a pull off, chain from hitch to hitch. I had an 81 GMC swb 350 standard. I drug him away three times in a row, that quieted him down some😄 don’t get me wrong, I like ram chargers! and i did more than a few repairs over the years I owned the gmc

I had many dodge vans and pickups with the super six. Most dependable and great fuel mileage.

No, not in 1977. You had to shift gears. Come to a complete stop to do it. I don't think you had to turn hubs on the wheels, but I could be wrong.
My cousin ended up rolling his end over end (drunk) there was a 400 Pontiac block in the back that hurt a couple guys in the back seat pretty bad. Didn’t really damage the engine block too much though
Good thing those guys were in the back seat to cushion the Pontiac block!

The Chevrolet K5 Blazer was the real king. Ford quit making the original Bronco and came out with the full size Bronco that sold really well. The Dodge/Plymouth version joined in too. Chevy was the first to introduce full-time 4WD, if I remember correctly, and everybody else soon switched (except for Jeep, which still had locking hubs, a long-earned reputation for poor build quality, but a growing cult following). But the Japanese had already invaded the car market by this time, offering much better gas mileage and much better quality. The Blazer/Bronco/Ramcharger were all popular, but they couldn't sell enough of them to make up for all their other problems.
Does anybody remember the Bronco II? There's a reason you don't see them anywhere anymore...

I had a 1985 Ramcharger, an ex Border Patrol truck, loved it but the body metal was so thin it kept falling apart.

Sadly that will never happen again because the name got separated from Dodge in 2015. For all of that year Dodge never paid Cummins for their engines to be used in their heavy duty trucks. This caused the government to separate the ram name from Dodge and bail them out again because they couldn't be bothered to pay Cummins which that whole scandal nearly ran both companies out of business. Also not to mention Dodge had been merging with other companies to stay alive. Mercedes had left them and now recently Fiat left them. What's left of the truck name is a separate company to take over which can have the diesels because now there are separate and selling good actually.

Are you kidding? I like North American built vehicles, but ones built from mid 70s to the 90s were pretty far from well built. That really opened the door to people buying japanese ( which i never have) gm, ford and dodge cut there own throat in that regard
