I saw this film when it first showed in the theatres. Peter Weir opened my eyes to what a real film could be. I still think it's one of the best movies ever made, and Weir remains my favourite director of all time.
I saw it in a large screen movie theater to. I didn't watch it again for years then watch that recently was even better on the second go-round. Works as a thriller and romantic drama. Mel Gibson's best work. Sigourney Weaver at her seductive best.
Amen to that, what a magnificent and timeless creation...Mel, raw and perfect for the complex character...still remember sitting on the edge of my seat, willing him to make it onto that plane.
@@JimmySand9 Oh, yeah! And John Candy in the movie! I believe that the Kindness and Wisdom of the Soul are not going anywhere, if so many people feel the trace of the atmosphere left by these directors, actors, musicians - then we will surely manifest these best qualities in our world.
It portrays a very important period of World history that is also overlooked. Next time someone goes to Bali, it is good to remember those beaches were once killing camps, 1965/1966. As General Sarwo Eddhie once said, they “proudly killed 3 million”. The events that led to those killings are portrayed in the film. Including the telegram about the weapons for the Indonesian communists. The film was taken in the Philippines, still too dangerous to do it in Indonesia in the 1980’s.
I don't know what's in this song but i'd stay for hours and hours listening it. It has something that seizes you. Wonderful soundtrack, wonderful movie and wonderful players
This would be in everyone's top five movies if they saw it. It's a great film, and this piece matches its greatness perfectly. 10 years later, Hans Zimmer evoked this with his "You're So Cool" for the movie True Romance
One of favourite movies of all time. And an incredible soundtrack by Vangelis. Mel Gibson had some great early films...strongly suggest folks watch Gallipoli
Such an underrated, overlooked movie. I remember seeing it in theaters when I was 14 with my dad. I was completely caught up in the story and LOVED the soundtrack. Sadly, this movie (as well as Weir's other films like "Mosquito Coast" and "Witness") would probably never get made today. The great thing about the early 80s was the rollover from the 70s, which, in my opinion, was probably the greatest era for American cinema.
People in today’s era don’t know good cinema anymore. I kind of blame big companies like Disney for bringing way too many superhero and Star Wars movies. These interconnected universe of movies flooded the market and politics leaked into most of them. This era of cinema was the most interesting and creative. Today there’s nothing being created anymore.
This did find a huge audience with HBO's and others' upcoming. I found a lot of people had seen it many times, just because it was on their pay channel.
Superb 1983 film, although the ease with which he managed to board that 2pm plane beggars belief. The chemistry between Mel and Sigourney is explosive and Linda Hunt steals the show (and wins an Oscar) as Billy Kwan. This Vangelis leitmotif is magnificent. He had initially planned to use it for the opening sequence of Chariots of Fire (1981) then changed the music to the classic piece we know today.
I think the odds were against him being able to get on that plane, and he knew it. He was terrified, but knew he had to appear calm in order to stand a chance of boarding. That was what made the scene so tense. A great film.
J'ai beaucoup aimé ce film , il a contribué à mon amour de l'Asie. Mel Gibson et sigourney Weawer étaient au sommet de leur beauté et je ne réjouis de les revoir. La B.O de Vangelis est splendide 😍
the fact is that this film is located entirely in the Philippines, not in Indonesia, when this film was released, the Indonesian government at that time banned this film from circulating in Indonesia
Beautiful movie, beautiful music and some of my all time fav movie lines at the end ...in the cafe in Europe sitting by tye footbath think of me while youre drinking your coffee- in my dreams im there w you..❤
Wow. Been after this for a couple of decades, because I forgot the name. Feels like I went around the world to get back to Square One. Kept thinking this was in a John Woo movie.
No. For some ODD reason, no one credited Vangelis for this most recognizable musical theme from the movie. I bought the CD -- and this piece wasn't on it!
Many people don't know this, but a sequel to this film was planned. It was to be called "The Year of Living Comfortably." However, the project fell through for obvious reasons. True story...

The best movies of the 80s always had Vangelis.
Yes ...I especially love the original Blade Runner ...that music was stunning 😍
You can just imagine how awesome it would have been to see and hear him work with John Hughes.

This was the only Vangelis piece included - the soundtrack was written by Maurice Jarre.
Chariots of Fire...
Such a great movie! The chemistry between Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver is fantastic.
Such a beautiful, profound movie with so many layers to it. It is not simply a love story.
It portrays a very important period of World history that is also overlooked. Next time someone goes to Bali, it is good to remember those beaches were once killing camps, 1965/1966. As General Sarwo Eddhie once said, they “proudly killed 3 million”.

Well observed. Billy Kwan's enlightenment of Guy Hamilton about the Wayang shadow play was a brilliant scene.
Beautiful film, wonderful acting, and gorgeous soundtrack.
Could not put it better myself.
Quality film making in every regard. Always one of my favorites.

Having watched bits and pieces on You Tube, I bought DVD.
It is incredible film. I listen to Vangelis music.
Beautiful! Thank-you for this compilation. A perfect tribute to a fantastic 1982 film with a superb soundtrack!
This would be in everyone's top five movies if they saw it. It's a great film, and this piece matches its greatness perfectly.
10 years later, Hans Zimmer evoked this with his "You're So Cool" for the movie True Romance
A role for which Linda Hunt won the 1983 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
"Sukarno feed your people"
I'll always remember her character's line from the film "What then must you do?"
A brilliant movie and a brilliant score
The year of living dangerously

Maurice Jarre wrote the soundtrack. This was the only Vangelis piece included.
@rumcoke9123 It's your favorite film, and yet you don't even know who wrote the score...
great film, and a young Sigourney Weaver - beautiful

Not ''underrated'' at all, Linda Hunt won an Oscar for her role.🥰

Gibson and Weaver both at their stunning peak.
Back when Mel was an absolute charmer.🥰🥰♥️♥️🤗🤗. Great music score.
The old order ignoring change and the violent disruption of the new order beautifully evoked in this film.
Ran this at one of the multi-plex I managed in the early 80’s. Many great films we showed because we had extra screens. Great times.
Brilliant movie and a phenomenal soundtrack. 👍

Man Sigourney Weaver was hot in the 80’s. Insanely beautiful.
Well she still is hot in 2025.
A superb film in every way. I love how Mel looks at Sigourney at around 1:20.
Haunting and beautiful as ever!… a real gem in every respect….
An absolutely beautiful and perfect film and soundtrack.

@@bloggaloggs Yeah same here. Something about some sort of contractual legal issues with the rights to the music I guess. Dang shame.
The piece was originally used in the soundtrack to the documentary _Opéra Sauvage_. It was issued on album and CD by Polydor.
The soundtrack was written by Maurice Jarre but Vangelis gave permission to use this piece.
Hizo epoca❤🎉
Vangelis ❤🇬🇷💯

most of the soundtrack was by Jarre, but for this superb piece by Vangelis. Originally it was to be used for the opening of Chariots of Fire.

@@boxingandbulldogs6341 The "Living Dangerously" reference came from an actual speech by Sukarno.

Sigourney 1:23 🔥🔥🔥

Vangelis, Linda Hunt and Sigourney Weaver made this movie great. Mel Gibson is such a sleazoid!

Mel Gibson looks so young here.
La belleza de la musica es equiparable a la de Sigourney
The first 60 seconds of this are totally epic!. But, then comes all the cheap annoying vibrato which just ruins the rest.
