- Опубліковано 17 гру 2012
- Yo!! Whazzup dudes?!! Well, so much for making shorter videos. lol This one clocks in at a brisk 31mins. As I move to a quicker release schedule, I'm going to make an effort to keep them under 12mins whenever possible.
In this episode I talk about my '88 Ibanez RG560, recommend a few books from my extensive collection, and wrap up with talking about upcoming videos and possibly a new channel focused on music theory. I have at least two more videos in the works for this year. Who knows, maybe I'll finally do The Collection, a complete survey of all of my guitars in chronological order from my '73 Cameo Classical to the red Ibanez RG560 I scored a few months ago. It just might happen!!
Enjoy!

2021, watching this whole vid again - absolutely love it. Love you without the beard I have to say. Such a great watch and listen. Feel like I’m listening to a great buddy. Love your vids bud. Keep well
I don't know why, but I like these older videos better. I always come back and watch them.
After 5 years, I still love this video and a few other early you've uploaded. Takes me right back!
"Another one rides the bus" I died laughing
I predict you will grow a beard in the future. Lol
buickpimp69 you were right lol
Lmao you were right 😂
we need some pics of young steve just starting out playing. we all have a pic or two of us as younglings just starting out.
Your vids are the best antidepressants that I have found so far. The best part is right at the end! Whatever you do, Im watching. Thanks, Steve!
Also, I love your videos. I just enjoy listening to you ramble on and tell stories for some reason.
Steve I love your videos, you're the one chanel that I've subscribed to that I most look toward to seeing a new video. Great playing and story. Merry Christmas
Everything about this video is tasty from the licks right on down to the Sumatran blend!
I love your stories and the way you tell them. MY first Ibanez was a Roadstar 2, and every guy I have met who ever had one has a mutual "I know your pain" instant connection. Those floating trems would not stay in tune for love nor money. Its taken me over twenty years to convince myself to try one again. The Maglok vid did clinched it for me. Thanks for making all these great vids. \m/
Exactly, I feel your pain, I’ve got an ‘83 Roadstar II, and it was used when I got it in ‘86. It’s got some cosmetic mojo, and the floating trem is a challenge. Yet, I’m in love with it and its shortcomings - probably because I’ve got my own shortcomings as a guitar player.
I’ll have to check out the Maglok vid.
Thanks so much! Very much appreciated. Merry Christmas to you and yours!
i never get tired of listining to ur stories
All of us fans love listening to your thoughts on music, life, etc. Keep the vids whatever length they end up being! I, for one, feel like I'm BS'ing with one of my old guitar buddies from Mass. so watching these videos make me feel right at home, even though I'm all the way in California. By the way, the swearing is so me too! Fuckin' A! Massholes for life! Rock on bro!
Merry Christmas and Happy Rockin' New Year!!!! Thanks for your video visits. You help keep my sanity!!!!
Oh yeah about the lessons, do it man. i know there are many out there already doing it but I could really listen to you all day, you seem to have the right amount of seriousness and humor to pull it off dude. I for one would subscribe. Cheers.
LOL - one of the greatest openings of all your videos! You were especially hyped this one!! Daddy was drinking the good stuff!
Merry Christmas from the Isle of Man. Thank you for entertaining us throughout 2012 and best wishes to you and your family for a great 2013. Look forward to you new videos. Cheers, Bill.
your guitar stories are bloody amazing!!! the strat bidding war! damn!!
2-3 videos a week would be killer dude!
I really enjoy just listening to you rambling on while drinking my morning coffee
Love the videos! Can't wait to see the jingle bells vid! I would also love to see the lesson vids you were talkin about. Keep up the good work! And MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Thanks!! Merry Christmas to you, too!
Thanks, Matt! That's high praise coming from such an accomplished player as yourself. Your playing is an inspiration, to say the least. Merry Xmas to you and yours.
Oh Yeah another fantastic video Steve Thank You and a Merry Christmas to you and your family Cheer's,
I lived in Oregon for my first 20 years.... I hate basements and rainy climates. Now Scottsdale AZ and no rain and Basements are hard to find... Bummer about this beautiful guitar!
Thanks! They'll start to trickle in after the first of the year. Have a great holiday!
i enjoy listening to the rambling on and on. its comforting in a way. no homo
hey dude, sweet video, its great hearing stories about your past! keep it up!
A Special Merry Christmas from Malta! Your youtube videos are a real jem! Keep 'em rolling;) Happy Holidays ,Take Care
Thanks, Jordan! I went to Berklee for their "Career Exploration" program between by junior and senior years in high school (summer of 1983). There I learned that my lack of reading was a big hole in my playing and had me on the outside looking in at every ensemble. When I went back to high school, I took a year-long music theory program that was incredible. That's where I really got the start to my music education. I ended up going to college for Economics, which wasn't very marketable.
Thanks, man!! Much appreciated!! Lessons are definitely on the way, along with more vlogs and reviews. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!
Awesome vid as usual, keep up the good work, love the stories.
Merry Christmas from the UK. :-)
The Guitar handbook really is awesome. It's like everything you need to know about owning a guitar.
Huge recommend
Instant sub! Amazing guitar demonstrations dude!
Love your stories. Very laidback. You got a new subscriber.
love your vlogs dude.
Just making my way through your videos, I could listen to you talk and play guitar all day.... Um,I just did!
Yeah Yeah Yeah Rock on Bro!! The sales guy story was funny! Nice guitar!
Watched the whole 31+ minutes. Enjoyed every second
My god, poor Ronnie and his Strat! Did he not have furniture or a couch he could sell instead? lol There was a time we all know when "vintage" was still considered old and valuable, but nothing like the untouchable status those instruments hold today. The right Strat and Les Paul are considered holy grails. It is over the top nuts! Great story! I lived in the Boston area from '79 to '89 when I was born until I was nine or ten. I never knew about the music scene back then and it is so cool to hear this stuff! Thanks!
Steve!! (laughs) You just love bringing us back to the good 'ol days of '88, '89, ay? LOL The visual images you paint on your canvas are so entertaining. Delighted to hear that you’re gearing up for 2013 guitar channel, Sunday blog day, release your lessons & tutorials same channel? whatever you decide, am sure we’ll all like and support you all the way! P.s. your playing is awesome! Giving me a run for my money!...keeping me on my toes (laughs).. Keep em coming, Steve!! Cheers! you rock!
Thanks man!! Merry Xmas to you and yours, too.
Merry Christmas buddy!! Love the vids!! They are like "hanging out" and talking guitars with an old buddy. Rock on man!! Looking forward to the new schedule and the Jingle Bells. =) I did a version of "Deck the Halls" last year.. should probably work on some others.. Merry Christmas bud!
I was an Ibanez fanboy in the late 80's and I still am.
Ibanez genuine idea in that time was the flat neck. I remember first playing an Ibanez, it was amazing how smooth you were able to slide down the neck.
Thanks so much, Tony! Very much appreciated. I'm still working out the schedule and nothing is set in stone, but more "fireside chat videos," more guests, some lessons and definitely a few covers will all be a part of 2013. Tony, you rock! That Lynch stuff is awesome. Happy Holidays and stay tubed for more in 2013!
We carried that model. The color was called "Road Flare Red." The necks were so thin compared to anything else on the market. They really were in a class by themselves. I hear you on regretful selling. I could make an hour-long video on all the guitars I dumped for short money and wish I still had. Grrrrr!!!
This is great ,listening to you is like sitting in an ol' REAL music store!
The kind that are no longer in New York City.
I've been anticipating this and i swear, i was convinced you'd have a Santa outfit on. There is time.
Holy crap, what have I discovered... these vids are awesome! My second subscribed channel now haha
Thanks man!! More on the way and, as always, I'll be highly caffeinated. Have a great holiday!!
Loving the vids man, you are a natural guitar player, loads of feel. Take it easy; ) Matt.
Great idea about that tutorials, keep on rocking!
Thanks, Freddy! Merry Christmas to you and yours. HA! That's so true. During my very brief stint at Berklee, I was totally lost during the ensembles. And tab wasn't invented yet, so it was all we had. The first tab came out (that I can remember) that Fall after my summer program was over. It was the Premiere Issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician -- November 1983. But I was already enrolled in a music theory class that made the biggest difference in my life. A whole year of theory!
Oh my god! that's absolutely my favorite book too! Holy shit!
Thanks for sharing your books. I've added two of them to my amazon wishlist. Looking forward to your version of Jingle Bells as well as your lessons.........I'm doooin!
I used to own a 1974 Ibanez Les Paul copy, and man it was an awsome guitar but I needed money. I always think if only I had it now, The sustain was incredible. I also owned a Fender Blues Deluxe amplifier, beautiful clear sound, another regretful sale. Why is it that musical instruments get the chop first in hard times? I now have a rule to never sell any musical instrument again, so far I have stuck to it. Cheers for another entertaining video dude. Rock on!
Hi Steve! Man, you're such a great storyteller! And it seems each of your amazing guitars holds such a great and fun story! You know, I don't even consider myself as a guitar player, but I enjoy watching your vids and listening to your stories, 'cause they're all about rock, having a good time and sharing some good memories. BTW, thanks for your cool comment on our Maiden cover! Rock on, man! You keep those guitars high... and dry! - JC
Just bought "The Advancing Guitarist" based on your recommendation. It´ll be shipped to me in Spain within the next two weeks, and all things considered, it was priced really well. I´m looking forward to it! Love your videos, keep up the great work!
You´re right, it is a great book!
Man I am dreaming of this pickup combination
Thanks, man! Much appreciated. More vids on a more regular schedule is coming up in 2013. So stay tubed!!
Your Awesome, Keep it ROCKIN!!!
Thanks, Peter! Merry Christmas to you, too. That's the feel I'm going for, hanging out with some good friends and talkin' shop. That Jingle Bells is nearly complete. Just got to tighten it up a bit and it'll be good to go. \m/ You got me GAS'n for a H&K amp. It looks and sounds awesome.
I've only plugged into the new tweed Classic 4x10, which was very nice. I really need a nice tube amp around here, but my wife is not convinced. I know, that Blues for Jimi is just incredible. What a performance!! Merry Christmas to you and yours. And Happy New Year, too!
Thanks so much, JC! I got a few stories, that's for sure. lol Man, I loved that Maiden cover. I really wish we had bands around here like that. As Maiden might write, it's a barren wasteland for live metal these days around here. Rock on, JC! Have a great holiday! \m/
HA! Awesome, man. Agreed, they are sick guitars!
Cool vids. My first Ibanez was this very one, same color. She's natural now, stained. DiMarzios, Tone Zone bridge and Fast Track 1's mid and neck, all splittable. I love this guitar more than any of my others, and I have a Jem, Strat, Les Paul, others! I almost bought the DSY 550, but glad I got the 560.
Agreed!! x1000!! Those '87 to '93 Ibanez guitars are the best value on the used market. Period. Like you, I want a whole stable of them. And I think I need one or two of the 700 series. I didn't like the shark-tooth inlay back in the day, but it's grown on me. I see the 500 series often for around $300, like you say. I see a lot of the 700 series for under $500. That's a steal!!
What's this talk of shortening videos? As long as it's under 30min, it's all good. I love hanging out with you. Thanks for the vids!
That's a really cool guitar! I wouldn't mind owning a guitar like that.
Hi mate - brilliant videos! It's like chatting to an old friend:). Merry Xmas to you and your family.
i know this is and old vid steve. but good shit man. damn good shit!
I for one would benefit from lessons on notation and theory I learned by solely by watching other players and jamming with as many people as I could back in the good old days. It's funny how you talk about working in a garage, from 1981-1988 I worked at an Oldsmobile dealership in the Bronx(parts dept.)talk about an education in confrontation lol.Merry Christmas Steve to you and your family.
Your stories are the best dude (Steve). Looking forward to the new year with more STUFF! A nice touch might be going over how you set up your guitar software :D TH2 or RG5. Just a thought :) Your shit sounds crazy awesome good.
Thanks Leo!! Hey, you should have been invited to that UA-cam Year in Review! Your channel has had phenomenal growth this year and your total views are staggering. We should chat over Skype someday. You're my UA-cam hero.
If you say keep them on this channel, I should. If there's anyone who's opinion I trust on here, it's yours.
Yeah, I gotta think he's gone by now. He looked like he had one foot in the grave back in '88!
That's exactly who the theory lessons are for, those with little or no notation knowledge or theory. HA! That's too funny about the dealership. So you know what I'm talking about! lol Merry Christmas to you and yours, Mike. And have a Happy New Year, too.
you tell kool stories dude!
Thanks Mark!! Yup....good eye! It will be featured soon enough. I'm planning a video of all my guitars and that one will definitely be a part of it. I think the headstock looks like a bottle opener, which would make sense for Ed....lol.
I know this video is old but I'm commenting anyway,I bout 4 years ago got rid of an old ibanez I had bout 20 years.I had gotten married had kids house and all the adult responsibility quit playing for bout 10 years, finally said man! I need to do something I enjoy so I started playing again.wanted to infuse some inspiration and set out to get new gear, long story short traded what I didn't realize I had which was the same guitar your playing the 560 and I regret it immensely. I just had no clue damn! So my mission now is to purchase a 560 again. This relates perfectly to your video on the ones that got away lol I should've really researched more.
Great vid man. I wish I could remember how to read notation, I used to know a little years ago when I first started taking lessons and went through all those books.
HA! You fuckin' got it!! lol Merry Christmas to you and yours. And Happy New Year, too. \m/
Guitar handbook!!!!! On my 2nd copy!!! I loved it then love it NOM🔝
Thanks, bro! Racer X?!? That's some scary shit right there. lol Gilbert was just on fire during those those years. Hell, they both were!
Great stuff, as always Steve. Love to hear what's on your mind. Two vids a week would be an awesome treat! I hope you can crank em out with ease! I'm not all too interested in lessons, myself. Maybe something a bit more advanced-intermediate, like you mentioned would be nice. Or maybe using popular song examples of advanced intervallic concepts, etc. UA-cam is just littered with mundane, beginner-level lessons. I prefer your style of general-topic, laid back guitar chat.
the thing you do on 1.30 sound like bagpipes hahahhaa.Awsome video!Rock on!!!
Oh yeah, it's definitely on the way. It may be a new channel or I just may post them here. I just thought a new channel would keep it focused and I would eliminate the swearing for a wider audience. I'll make a decision soon, but either way, it's coming.
Ho, ho, ho!! Thanks so much! I'll be bringing lots of riffs and laughs for the New Year. Stay tubed!!
Huge Fan of your videos man! You ever think about all the guitars you've ever owned from your first guitar until now and wrote them down? I'd bet money you've had over 100 easy. I've been playing for about 24 years and owned over 60, Lol. Quite a few I got rid of that I could kick myself in the head for doing so, but you can always buy a new one.
haha. i learned all the theory to them but never really applied them to my playing. i learned them for college but now i think that i actually could use them to expand my musical vocabulary. hopefully you should be able to jog my memory! haha cheers love your vids man
Thanks! They're going in the yellow LP Custom for now. It's the easiest install and it really needs new pickups. It will be one of the first vids in the New Year.
Wow, great intro, good stories and I don't mind a video which runs all over the place, Hoot channel name story, this upload has it all and as always the fantastic playing
As for educational videos, do them on this channel but set them up in their own playlist, managing more than one channel properly is tricky unless you have all day to frig with the rigging
chain smokers...dying breed
Thanks! Stick with me and I'll have you reading soon enough. Sight reading is hard (I'm not very good at it), but knowing the notes and being able to converse in standard notation is a valuable skill and will take your understanding of music to the next level.
Thanks! I was just working on the Jingle Bells tune about an hour ago. It's really shaping up nicely. And the lesson videos are definitely on the way, so stay tubed. Merry Xmas to you and yours!
It comes in handy!
I would love to see some lesson videos, i know i would enjoy them. i used to know alot of theory when i was in band and played the saxophone, but i find it hard to transfer that onto guitar.i feel like you would definitely have some good tips and be able to explain some hard stuff in laymen terms
Thanks so much!!
Yeah, this would definitely be all based in standard notation. I may add tabs in select videos along with the standard notation, but the main focus will be standard notation. They'll be casual, occasionally funny and definitely educational. Stay tubed!!
LOL, yep, we've all done it. "Deals I've screwed myself with". Had an Ibanez Artist Tobacco Sunburst, semi hollow body that practically played itself it was so smooth. Used it for blues. DAaaaaannng! -Joe Dirt- retort! Now I get the blues thinking about it.
