I'm glad Justin Hayward was a sport about doing something with Ian Anderson, after Ian had once publicly expressed interest in becoming part (i.e. official member) of the Moody Blues, which I believe was emotionally reserved for Ray, and is perfectly filled out to this day by Norda Mullen. It's nice to get the chance to hear that much drempt of 'Tull Tone' on the flute solo, and I thought it was creative and worth the effort. I enjoy hearing the most famous rock flautist of our day play the most famous flute solo, and make a version of it for himself. If only more art crossed over like this in the spirit of curiousity and freedom to explore.
very nice and factual explanation of this.... i totally concur with everything you say, but Ian sure made a nice thing of it, as we knew he could and would ! Shame it was not a complete recording, seems strange ! A singurally Beautiful Haunting song !
The four minute miracle song that has lasted over fifty years...and loved just as much today as it was when first released. Not many songs can hold that claim to fame....and no, let's not put the Beatles into this equation. None of their songs were written in just four minutes. Nights in White Satin WAS.
Two of my favorite musicians of all time Justin Hayward and Ian Anderson and bands...incredible to listen and grow up to such melodic songs ever created. I am very picky at what I consider to be genuinely good music. They both are top notch! Loved them both for over 40+ years. Glad to see them together.
I cannot believe that I didn’t know this collaboration had happened. Literally my two favorite musicians of all time, together performing this masterpiece. Both sound amazing!
Ray Thomas is smiling with approval to know Ian finally got the gig to perform these classics with at least Justin. And Ian is grateful- they sound awesome together!
Very nice, I saw a Ian interview from eons ago and he said he always wanted to play this flute solo in Nights, I see he got his wish. Nice version, the bass player could have been a little more subtle though during Ian's solo.

Been a fan since the beginning and I love hearing other musicians add their special gifts with a super talent like Justin Hayward. My kids grew up with his music and still listen
even after all these years, Justin still plays this as if its the first time he has played it in front of an audience, Dont know if that says more about the songwriter, or the song :-)
This song gets more beautiful in every setting ,and with every combo of musicians - as long as Justin Hayward , or one of the other Moodies, is one of them.
Ya, I have loved these guys since my hippie days in the late sixties. I wonder if they have found faith in Christ. You know being in a cathedral and all. That would be cool.
Kathy. Cairns lucky you. What a dream come true. Two of my favorite musicians on stage together. I know Ian has spoken of wanting to play with the Moody Blues just to do the solo in Nights and you witnessed it live. Great memories.
I never took this seriously(Ian wanting become a full member of the Moodies after Ray retire himself). He was just joking. Cause Ian is simply an enormously talented composer and a big ego too, of course. How could him limit himself in a place smaller than he had as the J Tull leader? But he did it here in Nights! Maybe he could do it for one or two years with the Moodies, only for fun! It would be fantastic!!!
What a great video. Ian and justin together what a great duel. Sounds so sweet, both so talented. I seen Ian of tull years back. One happy day. Always wanted to see the mm, but never get to. I loved ray thomas and he will be so missed. I always wanted to see ray and Ian play together ,now that would have been wonderfully sweet.
My favorite band and songwriter Justin hayward , and one of the best concerts i ever saw jethro tull. Ian anderson who's also incredible on the guitar. Just great to see them together. What an age of music , both legends.
While this is a Beatiful song, & Ian Anderson is a Gifted Flautist, no one did this Flute Solo on this song like Ray Thomas did, or like Norda Mullen does now 😃 Just my opinion all!
Neither One of These Legends are in the Rock Hall of Shame . But Donna Summers is in there . The Rock Hall will Not be Legit till Both are Inducted, Period !
agree with the fella who said "obvious combination" Ian flowers it up a bit over a ray-norda version. OK. He had been straining at his leash to get an opp to do this..for decades. Let it fly Ian.
It's July 2021, and am by the balcony listening to some great music and reading the comments and somebody mentioned this amazing collaboration - and O!Boy am I so glad that I came this way. Thanks to both Justin & Ian - you are amazing

I can remember when this song came out. 1965. Or so off the blues first long play 33-1/3 vinal album. Iran Anderson from Jethro Tull is great I will miss Ray Thomas. They both play a bad ass Flute
By simply comparing the flute solo here to the original, you can hear how such a great flutist Ian is. Not that there's anything wrong with the original flute solo on this song, but Ian is just miles ahead.
Ian's playing sounded a bit staccato, even the solo. But still very nice. This must be a treat for him, since he has stated publicly he's always wanted to work with Justin.
Well now . . . Ian Anderson finally got his chance to play that famous flute solo. Good for him. I just wish the video would've played the entire song.

It's on one of his interviews here on YT; I watched it a few days ago. When Ray retired they were playing somewhere in Germany (Moody's.) Ian hoped to be able to join them on stage for NIWS but they'd already hired some lady. Ian said he was really disappointed but... that's show biz.
The sad irony is that the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are in my personal Hall of Fame, so I guess it really doesn't matter.
Never knew before that the incomparable Ian Anderson had wanted to join the Moody Blues..., it might have worked out great!(But Ray Thomas with his flute playing, vocals, songwriting, was an integral part of the band)
I love this. It's the greatest song in history. Written & performed by Justin Hayward himself. Anderson is a great songwriter and musician himself. Anderson also plays guitar beautifully. The flute is his mood instrument.

I just love how old rockers and musos now with nothing to prove and ego's let go love to catch up and make music together. It warms my heart.
The wish of Ian Anderson come true to play the flute part on "Nights" one time...

Loved Ian's take on this famous flute solo. Extrapolation is brilliant. Ray Thomas' memory survives intact, and now we have a new memory with Ian.

Yup me too. I managed to creep in to the back for the sound check. Fantastic
Always wanted to hear dueling flutes between Ray and Ian ... I think that would have been a hoot! This is a great video!
Yeah that would have been a real toot! 😂
So good! Justin's voice was perfect and Ian is so aware, he knew just how far to go
Well, he's not Ray Thomas, but he's still damn good! Humor aside, nice to hear the voice of the Moodies and that of Tull working together.
Ray Thomas' strongest point as a flautist was that he allowed the melody to come out, without overpowering it with ornamentation.

Throughly enjoyed this. Would be good to see what these two highly skilled musicians would do with a strong collaboration on a few new songs.
I listened to this 3 times. Can’t get enough of this magical music! Thank you Justin and Ian .
A fine Jethro trill interpretation of the flute parts!

Awesome, man... I got goosebumps when Ian started playing. Justin is awesome, then add Ian???? OMG! Come play again in the San Francisco Bay Area!
ian was ready to do a jethro tull interpretation midway through on flute, with one leg dance....sounded great....justin sounded as good as ever.
This is fanyastic! Thanks. I'm still waiting for the day...Sir Justin Hayward.

I like Ian, but sorry I still prefer the original version with Ray Thomas.. Ian

Too olds to rock and roll too youngs to die💪🙌
Ian expressed his desire to take Ray Thomas' place when he retired in 2003, but the job touring went to flutist Norda Mullen.
Awesome. Always loved Jethro Tull and the Moodies!
