The interlinked hydraulic suspension in the Y62 was invented by my father here in Western Australia, he also invented the KDSS suspension in the LC200. The system in the Patrol is superior, it's very good. The system used in the Patrol was also licensed to McLaren Automotive and they still use it today. The system in the LC200 was licensed to Citroen for their WRC cars and Mitsubishi for the Dakar cars.

Interesting that you mentioned Nissan and McLaren. Modern McLaren V8s are derived from Nissan’s Le Mans V8, the VRH35L. Nissan is capable of top notch design, this is evident in GTRs and in the Z cars; but in some ways, their 4wds as well where they are known for their strength.

I have owned a Y62 since July 2014 , and have a new one arriving in February. Fuel economy has been better that spec, 9 litres per 100 km on the drive from Sydney to Byron bay after a stainless steel exhaust was fitted , better than the V8 200 series Landcruiser my business partner owned. He recently sold it after a raft of problems and disappointing fuel efficiency. The Patrol has had zero problems in 7 years , I loaned it to a wealthy friend and he asked if it was new , the leather interior remains spotless. The car is enormous but remains a joy to drive with amazing acceleration and performance, on a recent trip to Dubai I noted that several with Royal plates were parked at the 5 star Hotel we were dining at , if the richest family in the Emirates drive these vehicles it must mean they are the best available. One disappointing thing is the Australian spec cars lack the updated centre consul present on the Middle Eastern spec vehicles but has all the updated safety semi autonomous driving features. Nissan is a company run by engineers historically ( now the Lebanese crook Goshon has fled Japan once again) the Patrol shows this heritage. I wholeheartedly agree with this review, the Landruisers twin centrally mounted turbo charged highly stressed new engine will be a risk not worth taking given the huge distances and isolation users in Australia regularly confront , try fixing that without a factory authorised service facility if something goes wrong.

We test drove both. Then bought the Patrol without hesitation. More powerful, rides better, more solid, sounds better, and immensely cheaper ($30k saving). The Toyota was tinny, harsh ride, complex infotainment, the bonnet flexing during the drive like it’s made of plastic. It felt like a cross between a Prado and a Camry. Lastly, I get my Patrol in 6 months, not a year or more that is Toyota’s delivery timeframe.

    • @tuna_6548

It would never break even because the servicing costs for a TDV6 are going to be higher, plus insurance on a higher value vehicle. Might as well just go the V8 for the KW.
When it comes to aftermarket the fact you can just bolt 35's and a 2 inch lift on the Nissan is nice. The 300 track has been pushed out and with stock 265s is already flush with the body so flares are likely needed when you go to 33's (and the shocks have been moved outside the rail and are vertical on the rear, can't just push the rims in with offset), the suspension droop on the factory front suspension is pushing CV angles as far as you'd want which means any lift kit is likely to need a diff drop. It's pretty capable stock but for people looking to mod the Toyota is going to be very costly.

Good video. Liked how you said about driving around town it will drink quite a bit more compared to highway driving. Also, if ya going off road, out back, cross country, do ya really want a high tech vehicle? Basic interior, mechanicals, some technology inside is better isn't it? Agree with you on engines are getting too small. Both in australia and here in nz, we love towing the boats, caravans or trailers. We want that bigger, heavier vehicle with the bigger engine to tow up hills, long distance, heavier vehicle to slow the trailer on a down hill instead of trailer pushing the vehicle out of control.

Great video, but I would love to see a side by side comparison on everything possible for a short term review. One without mention of previous models which are void in a comparison of the LC300 vs the most modern Y62.
Bang for buck my wife and I bought a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland 5.7L Hemi 2 years ago because it was the equivalent price of a twenty year old LC. Lots more tech for a lot less. For how I drive, 13L/100km fuel and $150ish of 98 at the bowser. I was definitely hesitant because of the so called rep that Jeeps get, but I knew a few blokes with diesel Jeeps and one with a hemi, all of which said they had little to no dramas to that point, so I figured I'd give it a go. Haven't regretted it yet.
Moral of the story, DON'T get sucked into buying a vehicle you don't actually want, need or afford. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH FOR FACTS, NOT OPINIONS!!
Fuel economy and definitely tyre mileage is all about how you drive it and with what weight, as well as pressures for tyres obviously.
