  • Here’s another video of East Penn Railroad’s old & rare U23B locomotive, which is the second part to my video titled: “Old Locomotive has Trouble Switching Cars - Hits Garage Door + Wheel Slip!” • Old Locomotive has Tro...
On two different days I followed this train around on their short line branch between Sinking Spring and Ephrata after interchanging with the Norfolk Southern Railway in Reading, Pennsylvania: We’ll see several locations where the locomotive chugs and sounds it’s nice Leslie RS3K horn, as well as switching another industry on the line.
These General Electric “Universal Series” locomotives are known for having that distant 4-stroke “chug” which is also heard in the Dash-7 and early Dash-8 engines. These new GEVO’s just aren’t the same! I think they sound like vacuum cleaners, but I would appreciate your thoughts about older vs newer GE locomotives in the comments below!
The industry switching starts at 5:45.
Best chugging clip start times: 0:15; 0:45; 3:25.
My favorite railroad crossing shot with horn: 4:40

Some people smoke. Some drink. Some vape. For relaxation, I watch cool train videos like these. Awesome horn.

Railroading had so much character back in the day. I still don't need a scanner. It takes the elements of surprise away from good old fashioned patience

I love the crossing shot at Reinholds with the dead loco on the siding. You have some awesome videos! You have a lot of the same tastes that I have. Shortlines are the way to go!

Brian, thanks for watching and commenting! I agree with you about shortlines; I love watching the action of hand-me-down locomotives giving it their go!

Good video! I believe that engine was NIWX 2204 before PRL. I was a short line conductor and that locomotive was sitting on or railroad inactive since it was unreliable at the time which was 2018. I was the conductor that took it to the BNSF interchange in Cheney, Wa. The railroad was called the Eastern Washington Gateway Railroad. It’s now the Washington Eastern Railroad.

I like the old locomotives much better. It's like the difference between an electric car and an good old V8.
    Good video.

Only got 43 years of that sister train? I suppose. I love small towns. Best places to live if you find good employment with in a half hrs drive or if you just want a quiet place to retire. That train whistle isn't so quiet though. I grew up close the railroad. A very busy railroad. The sound of the ten PM B&O sang me to sleep every night crossing the Ohio river when I was a kid and still does now and then but not so often since the steel mill closed on the other side of the river.

My personal thoughts on older vs newer GE prime movers:
I’ve noticed that the older 7FDL engines sound rougher, but I think the newer GEVO engines produce more bass, and remind me more of ALCOs than the FDLs do

The 7fdl 16s are more choppy sounding and the gevo chug sounds more like continuous tambourine, high hats, or maracas

The new ET44's definitely fit the "vacuum cleaner" nomenclature. lmao When they're at notch 6-8, I swear, they sound like a SD70ACe minus the massive engine bass the 710G emits.

I love the horn on this loco, I wish i knew what it was it does sound like the standard conrail horn. I love the early GE chug there's nothing better then that sound! Its sad newer tier 4's don't have that sound.

      DEFINITELY A U-23B!
      U 25 HAD A 7- FDL 16 CYL ENGINE
2500 HP AND A TOTALLY DIFFERENT AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM AND A COMBINED RADIATOR AND AUXILARY BLOWER FAN ARRANGEMENT
      ALL UNDER THE RADIATOR BANK!
WORKED ON THEM ARGENTINE AT&SF LOCOMOTIVE SHOP FROM 1965 TILL TRADED OFF 1977?
ALSO U25B AND C MODELS HAD A SINGLE PICTURE WINDOW TYPE
      WINDSHIELD!
      KEEP THEM ROLLING BROTHERS!
      👍👍
