Rare Ex-Conrail "Super 7" Locomotives in Action! | Ohio Central Railroad

- In the small town of Zanesville, Ohio resides a yard belonging to the Ohio Central Railroad system. This is where we chose to begin filming this video, since these rare ex-Conrail locomotives were stationed here. You will see three different "Super 7" locomotives in this video, two still wearing their original Conrail paint, while the third is painted for Ohio Central.
These locomotives were originally built by General Electric for Western Pacific as U23Bs in 1972. Between 1989 and 1991, with the General Electric Erie plant being backed up by the new “Dash 8” series locomotives, General Electric purchased the Montreal Locomotive Works in Montreal, QC to overhaul these engines. Initially, the Monongahela Railway was the only railroad in the United States interested in GE’s new “Super 7” class of locomotives.
Rebuilt B23-7S locomotives included:
• The SENTRY system, which used traction motor shaft speed sensors in place of old and outdated axle mounted systems. Being six times more sensitive to speed fluctuations, this allowed the locomotive’s new “Dash 8” spec computer systems to detect wheel slip, and automatically reduce motor output and apply sand to the rails. This allowed for much improved traction, which was perfect for the MGA’s long and heavy coal trains.
• Dash 8 specification computer systems
• GE “Standard Cab”
The locomotives reused the prime mover and traction motors from the old U23Bs.
Never knew anyone filmed the little bit of railroading that goes on in Zanesville, it's nice to see coverage of my area for a change. You've gained a new subscriber
Glad you enjoyed!
Zansville has really interesting operation.
GE locomotive with EMD B-Trucks 😳😲
Wow look at how crisp that Conrail Quality lettering is on #4096 at 7:14. Can't believe this survived until 2022!!! Although, I looked at it again...did someone re-stencil it after it was repainted?
If only we still had both these and the regular cab C40-9's on NS. Definitely would be great to start out on them for my first day when I get out of McDonough.
Hi! Great railfaning video. First time I've seen a railfaning video of that area of Ohio. Nice to see old Monongahela locos still going and still wearing their successor's, Conrail, paint.
I live in zanesville ohio
3:11: OHCR #4095 Ex-Conrail K3L air horn, & bell bracket sounds good!
I'm hoping to get at least one of these on Sunday before they completely dissappear from the US due to the EPA. When do they run?
Amazing that these are being used at night. Seeing Conrail on the move!!! I live in southern California, your not seeing either of these out here so it's just really cool. It's rare just to see southern Pacific paint on the line.
4095 is on the G&W EPA settlement list to be scrapped, what about the other one? Has the orange empire painted it? Is it still operating?
Casey Jones you better watch your speed.
