      i am shooting a video right now for a basic fairing speaker install and amp install using the stock radio, no kidding lol and I just pulled these out...Ive taken about 50 sets out since this video...if you have a ratchet style box wrench, that works good too....just takes patience.

    Hey Steve great video knowing where the bolts are and how to access them is a big time saver. One tip you didn’t seem to have trouble with but I did. Stuff a rag next to the fork tubes so when you drop the bolts you don’t have to fish them out.

      ah yeah..been there done that...talk about pissed LOL Ive fished a few out in my day and now I do exactly that..specially on the 13 down models...stuff a rag in both of them!

    Crows pecked out my speakers this summer while I was at the Old Faithful Geyser. (I didn't actually see them do it but a couple near my bike looked a little sketchy.) Good reason for new speakers and I finally got around to doing the install yesterday. Thank you Steve for the excellent instruction! You were right, getting to those bolts toward the back took some patience!

    a bit of a tip. 7/16 shallow socket on a 12" flex head ratchet works best for them lower bolts. also remove the top vent piece for easier access. T25 torx works best on thos upper bolts less likely to strip them. the snap on shallow 7/16 is the most ideal (part number tms14). i can get them lower bolts all off within 2 min. super easy with these tools

    I wish I saw this video BEFORE I took my front fairing off this last weekend.
    My Cigarette lighter/power plug that's under my right speaker had come loose and wanted to tighten it up.
    I got as far as getting the 3 recessed bolts and the 2 that's up by the amp try and still couldn't figure out why the speaker pod wasn't moving.
    I didn't want to go any further into the rabbit hole and mess something up so I unplugged the cigarette lighter and ran a very long needle nose pliers to try to tighten it up the best I could without damaging anything.
    One of these days you guys should do a video about the inner fairing that you offer.

    Thanks Steve. Video was helpful as always. I didn't have a swivel so used a 11mm Flex Box-End Racheting Combination wrench and I had all 6 of those inner bolts off in 10 mins. Same with putting them back. Just an idea for someone that doesn't have the swivels and/or extensions.

      Paul, thanks for your suggestion on the 11mm flex box-wrench for the pod bolts, I almost canceled my stereo upgrade because I couldn't get the most difficult bolts out the traditional way with the hex bolt swivel extension and ratchet. You saved my project! Btw, I didn't have the flex box wrench, but found a small set on Amazon that included an 11mm for $20, worked perfect.

    Hey brother , got the same speakers but the pod is small ... did you cut the inside of the pods to fit that big magnet ?
    Thanks ;)

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  3 роки тому

      on the inside of the pod trim the thick part that has the tube part, all 3 edges... and on the edge that has the thin strip just clip it about 4 inches apart and then break it out with a pair of pliers. this speaker will drop right in if you trim those out.

    Good video. I have to say though, removing the 3 lower left side speaker pod bolts (if you’re facing the bike) was a ROYAL PAIN IN THE BUTT! I installed the stage 1 boom audio speakers with no amp. They sound decent for the cost.

      I almost gave up on my do-it-yourself stereo system upgrade because of this issue with the pod bolts, tried for over an hour but couldn't get the most difficult ones out. But then I read a post above from someone that the key is not to use the extended hex bolt tool, but instead use an 11mm pivoting-head ratcheting box wrench. Found an inexpensive set on Amazon ($20) and had the bolts out in about 15 mins. Saved my project!

    Steve, aren’t some of those bolts overkill? Couldn’t I re-install it and leave those hard to get ones out?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому +1

      I think its very much overkill....the 3 bolts on the main section hold it in place. The 3 in the lower section attach your inner bracket to the speaker pods giving the bracket more stability and the 2 on top attach the amp tray. I would install the top for sure. I dont know why leaving one out of the bottom would hurt anything. I would get at least 2 in. The 3 around the pod itself are pretty essential so there is no vibrating going on under there,

    Is it overkill to have those inner side screws for the pods that make life difficult? when there are so many screws around the pods already holding it in place of the fairing. I went to drop off my bike at the dealership to have the stock speakers swapped out for a set of Stage 2 with no Amp they wanted to charge me 2.5 hrs labor at a cost of $350. If you ask why I didn't do it myself was b/c I am very busy and rather pay to have it done.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  Рік тому +1

      It absolutely is overkill! One will do the trick on each side. Take 6 out and 2 go back in. Toss the other 4 in the "dumb shit HD engineers come up with" bucket. And there isn't anything wrong with that bro..im the same way when it comes to large projects around the house anymore...im too busy...i pay someone to come fix it. So I get it.

    So what do you suggest doing when the 3 bolts that hold the pod (the last 3 you mentioned) are seized in place, or pull the brass fitting loose and spin almost freely? It seems I’m stuck with stock speakers now unless I can convince a shop I wasn’t in there first 🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  2 роки тому

      ouch..yeah that sucks ...I had that happen on a bike before..one of them spun loose inside there..I know the brass grommet had broke free. I had jam a pair of needle nose in there and hold it...that sucked.

    Thanks for the video also couple questions the amp set up you have is what I'm looking for did you have to use a line driver? Did you flash your radio? And where you able to run all four channels of the amp from the two channels coming from the stock radio.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому

      Youre very welcome. Yes with this amp I used a 4 channel LOC to covert the bare wire to rca. My radio is not flashed ...its a standard so the rear channels under there are dead. I ran wires from my front L and R to all 4 channels on the LOC . Out of the LOC to the amp and then I could use all 4 channels on the amp coming out. L/R Front, L/R Rear. I have the front running the fairing and the lowers and the rear is running 4- 6x9's Here is my speaker and amp Talk Through that explains it better ua-cam.com/video/kqdMrz4WQnc/v-deo.html Any questions please let me know.

      You just have to get in there and get them...there are no tricks to either side other than a good swivel and extension. Ive done about 50 sets of these now and dont even use the swivel/extension anymore...Just push the wires out of the way and if you have a ratcheting box end wrench use that.

    Great vids love all the content couple Ive watched 2 and 3 times, i have 15 sgs getting ready to install lower faring speakers, since i have a special can i just install the speakers and not run an amp?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  5 років тому

      technically you can ...however the stock head unit has a very small built in amp and you wont be able o hear the speakers in the lowers over the ones directly in front of you. And unfortunately the stock Harman Kardon head unit lacks a lot in adjustability. Sad actually for the price of these things. I recommend you add a small amp, have your stock stereo flashed to 4 channels, no amp. (only HD can do that) That turns off the internal amp. Then you can run a small 4 channel amp and have way more power and will be able to use the gain to tune your speakers so you can hear the fairing and lowers equally. If you are interested in doing that I can walk you through a little more in detail. But running it stock...you simply wont hear those lowers.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому

      they will swap out the only issue ypu might have is the size of the magnet. You may need to notch out the back of the pod to get them to fit...we do it all the time. The pods dont do anything but hold the speaker...notching it out will not effect the sound.

  • @roderickmurray767
    @roderickmurray767 6 років тому

    Steve how's your bass response with the loc your using? I notice the bass notes leave once the bike is running. I'm using the audio control lc2i which adds bass but you have to be careful and make sure to turn everything down before you shut the bike off as there is a considerable difference.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому

      Yes you will see that on all of these bikes...the radio in its stock configuration drops some of the bass once you start the bike. You will notice how much louder it is when you kill the bike. You can take it to HD and have it flashed and let them know what you have in the bike as far as amp and speakers. I still notice the gain in volume and bass when I kill mine and it was never fully explained to me why it does that from the HD tech. Im not sure he even knew. One thing you can check is the speed volume control in your settings. That will change it some too. The radio has full power when the bike is in acc and not running. Once you start the bike it thinks you are slowing down so it lowers the volume and when you speed it it raises the volume..like in a car. I turn mine off and noticed it was better.

    • @roderickmurray767
      @roderickmurray767 6 років тому

      @sikbaggers  5 років тому

      Hey kenny... the 18s already have 6.5 inch speakers..no adapters needed. If you get s decent speaker itll have a bigger magnet. Inside these pods is little plastic reinforcement lines..you can pop those out with a pair of needle nose pliers or a dremel..these pods literally do nothing for sound...the 13 downs dont even have them. Some major pro audio speakers have huge magnets and we have literally cut the backs of these things out with no effect to sound.

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому

      thanks man.,..no nothing needs to be done if you unplug/plug in anything. Flashing the stereo means turning on or off speakers or even the amp that is built in to the stock stereo. For instance my stereo was a standard model so the rear channels were not turned on in the stock configuration. I also installed an aftermarket amp. So I had to have the stereo flashed 4 channel/ no amp. What that does is turns on all 4 channels and turns off the internal amp...I want only may aftermarket amp working. Pushing an amp through an amp causes to much distortion. "flashing" the stereo isn't really what they do either...kind of a confusing statement. All they do is hook it up to a PC and change the internal settings.

    Oddly enough the one in the rear was simple....can’t get the one above the lower one in the front.....ugh....why are there so many damn bolts holding on a speaker....

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  5 років тому +1

      the wire harness that is clipped right there on both side can be pulled down and out of the way to get to those front ones...its a clip on both sides but it just pulls out from that. Remove those and youll be able to access the bolts better.

    What model and brand of speaker?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  6 років тому +1

      Ricardo Rezende Mariano in this video I am running 6.5 DS18 Pro's.... I switched to the ds18 neo's since. The pros are plenty clear but the neo's wil handle more power.

      @@sikbaggers did you have to modify the speaker pods for the speakers to fit?

    • @sikbaggers
      @sikbaggers  5 років тому +1

      @@deepwaterpowerman68 With most pro audio speakers you will have to cut some of the bracing out on the inside of the pod to get the magnet to fit. The pods dont really do anything..ive seen guys remove half the back of the pod for magnets and no change in sound..but with the DS18 Pros all I had to do was remove 2 small pieces of the plastic bracing thats in the inside of the mold. Dremeled it out in about 3 minutes.
