BMW F30 320i B48 Spark Plug change.. quite a task!

  • After a long break, sofaBae needed some attention. The OEM spark plugs have been on for about 32k kms and were acting up leading to intermittent misfires and bad mileage.
    Fortunately thanks to Kashif Nazim (a fellow 330i and VRS owner), who was able to source OEM 330i High Performance spark plugs that would hold up to heat and abuse better than the ones for the 320i, I got to the task of changing them out. The 330i is a higher output version of the same B48-B20 engine with slightly lower compression and better ignition components, so we decided to go with those.
    Now came the incredible task of actually pulling half the top of the car apart to reach the 4th spark plug. I understand BMW designed the car to be 50-50 weight distribution, as a result of which the engine is pushed into the firewall as much as possible, but I sincerely hoped their engineers would be able to do that while keeping serviceability in mind. Also the un-necessary E-torx bolts thrown into the mix just go to complicate things further.
    Finally after a lot of elbow grease the plugs were changed, and I managed to remove some of the heat/sound insulation that are standard on CBU cars but have no reason to be on Indian cars due to our tropical climate conditions. With that removed the turbo sound is much more apparent and the car feels a lot nicer to drive, in spite of the horrible luxury line suspension.
    If I do decide to keep this car beyond 2021 January, we may go about getting a cup kit for the car and maybe an Evolve Tuning remap which claims to pump up the output by 80hp to about 270hp... lets keep our fingers crossed.

      Honestly not much to put. The 20i guide has such high compression that tuning it is risky.

    I just wanted to say thank you for uploading this video, I just followed everything step by step today and changed the plugs on my 330i. If it wasn't for people like you who take the time to make these videos a lot of people like us would be stuck paying a dealership or small shop to do easy things like this and get overcharged in the process. So again, man thank you so much, from Florida with much respect and appreciation! If you end up replacing your own pads and rotors make sure you record it haha, I think that is probably what's coming up next for my maintenance. I am at 40k miles now.

    Much appreciated video. It's not as bad as it seems...just annoying. Bolts are easy to take off and put back. You were able to do this video in under 30 mins with edits...so you probably were able to complete in total about an hour and half or less right? I find working on my car...while listening to good music...relaxing a bit. And YES..BMW engineering is ridiculous. Hello from California!

    Nice video bro. Isn't it longitudinal layout? You had mentioned transverse. Well i guess they had mounted the engine such a way for 50/50 weight distribution and better centre of gravity. Mine's a 320d so I've not got this issue.

    I soon need to change the spark plugs and i want to know the part nr from your spark plugs you put on. I dont know what bmw is saying about putting a 330i spark plugs on a 320i? Do they recommend it or not.

    Did you have issues with the OEM plugs? I have roughly 50000 km on my car and mine seem like they're failing early even though the service manual suggests that this should only be half of their life. I notice you have more than 10000km less than I and you're replacing yours already.

    • @PrithwiRay
      @PrithwiRay  3 роки тому

      Yes I was having fuel efficiency and misfire issues. Spark plugs in our climate and traffic conditions will not last you. More than 25-30k. And bad plugs will eventually compromise your coil packs and those are not cheap...

      Marginally better fuel economy, a bit more responsive engine. But I’m guessing that was due to the age of the oem plugs, rather than because of the upgrade
