I just want to thank you for doing these deep dives. I’m a blind guy and I’ve been watching Columbo for 30 years since my college days. I can enjoy the Columbo interactions with his quarry since it is dialogue-driven, but there’s a lot of visual stuff in the episodes that I miss. This is a great example. So you’ve been filling in gaps I’ve been missing for 30 years. Thank you so much.
One little detail stands out to an old-timer like me, who watched this when it first aired: the gas station running out of gas early on the night of the crime. 1973 was the middle of the OPEC oil embargo, so we were very familiar with gas rationing, long lines at the pumps, and gas stations running out of gas at inconvenient times.
That's right.
Alternate days. It made my parents nuts.

The Hanky on the phone trick was spoofed perfectly in Police Squad! Every time I watch these classic shows I can not help but chuckle when a Handkerchief is produced...
That's the first thing I thought of when that handkerchief came out. Hearing Leslie Nielson talking all deadpan into the phone and it sounding like an upbeat radio announcer on the other end had me pissing my pants with laughter back in the day.

@@WatchitforDays I know you have already shown the Police Squad clip contrasted with Ray Milland in a previous episode. Notwithstanding, instead of being irked by the cliché, I now have a bloody good laugh. Thank you for your hard work. Excellent Stuff.
Yes!
Love your sense of humour and dry delivery... 😄 you manage to highlight all the little bloopers and questionable/bizarre writing choices in a funny way, without ever sounding mean or sarcastic, and that's a delicate balance. Great deep dive as always, and great episode, with a really strong ending. BTW Vito Scotti is my favorite recurring character actor, he's memorable in every single appearance and I think Peter Falk must've really enjoyed giving him the spotlight. His role in the future episode "Identity Crisis" gave him the opportunity to speak italian (his native language) and after a brief shaky start his delivery was just flawless, as if he never leaved my country.

In 1968, as a 9 year old boy, Star Trek was my favorite TV show. And “The Enterprise Incident” was one of my favorite episodes. Then I found out Joanne Linville was from my home town and I was a fan.
Fast forward to 1973 when this Colombo episode aired, and my then 14 year old adolescent self would tell you Ms Linville most certainly did not need a shawl. She was beautiful!

Yes! Great Ep and great job The real victim was Hayward's wife! Lied, cheated on, getting more alcoholic by the day while trying to believe him that he didn't kill a guy she knew and dealing with his little girlie assistant always with him. Geez. Hope she got the house and everything lol

Adjusted for inflation, $45,000 from 1973 is equivalent to about $317,785.14 today. Adjusted for inflation, $55,000 from 1973 would be equivalent to approximately $388,404.05 today and $300,000 from 1973 would be equivalent to approximately $2,118,567.57 today. So that is $706,162,14 per episode.

Regarding the gas station having run out of gas -- this little detail is not lost on those of us who actually lived through the 70s. The OPEC fuel embargo resulted in this being a regular occurrence. Not only did stations run out of gas, when it WAS available there were often long lines of cars waiting to buy gas. I vividly remember waiting over an hour to gas up my car at the Fina station near highway 40 and Blue Ridge Cutoff. Some areas had gas rationing, or restricted people to buying gas on even or odd days, etc. Fun times. (Not.)

Let’s give a shout-out (maybe) to the braless 70s! Writers/producers must’ve had contract stipulations about that, sheesh.

I could watch this episode for days, I love it, and agree with 5/5 cigars but I have a few questions
--Columbo was at the Dentist @9:30 at night . Who keeps those hours ?
- Why did the control-freak campaign manager say NOTHING and passively agree to participate in this ridiculous plan ?
-Why did the Security detail have 1 person outside in the hallway and 3-4 people chatting it up in the parking structure ?
-How did Heyward beat Stone to the beach house ?
-Why did Heyward think that having someone else discover his fake assassination letter would prove he didn't plant it ?
-Why would Heyward risk staging a fake assassination attempt when he knew he was already under Columbo's microscope?
These are all very valid questions! Let's see if I can answer any of them...
-Maybe since this takes place in November there is less daylight so it could be 6pm or something and Columbo was the last patient of the day?
-I have no answer why Harry Stone would agree to the ridiculous plan
-I also have no idea why in the world they only had one man on the door while everyone else hung out in the garage.
-I'm pretty sure Hayward beat Harry to the beach house because Hayward drove straight there while Harry had to try and lose the security guys trying to keep up with him. So, he took a few extra turns to throw them off.
-Hayward knows sergeant Vernon believes everything set before him so if he has Linda "find" the death threat note, Vernon will surely not question it.
-Hayward is so foolish and full of himself. That's the only answer I have for why he would stage that murder attempt.
I appreciate you so much for these. This really made my day and I've had a rough one.
I appreciate you so much for being here! Tomorrow is another day
That's the famous Frieda Rentie's purple-dress-with-gold-necklace-murder-mystery-movie-uniform-attire.
Right, that's what her outfit was called, thank you!
Another absolute beast of an upload. I'm about a minute in but I'm always amazed by your writing, research and passion. Seeing your videos in my subscriptions is an absolute treat and I watch them all several times over. Your hard work is unmatched, and so appreciated as a former media student myself. I know I always gush in a lengthy paragraph but it's just too brilliant not to let you know how much I appreciate the dedication you show. You are brilliant!
You have made my day, Ben, with this extremely kind comment! ❤️ Thank you very much
@@WatchitforDays Well, you've made many of mine so I'm at least on the road to getting even! I'll be looking forward to the next time and thanks for the reply. I'm happy that you read it because you are just amazing.
You mentioned the view from the hotel balcony. It's exactly the same view from Dr. Fleming's balcony in Prescription Murder. Must have been a high-crime neighborhood!
Masterfully done (again), btw. You make it look so easy, when I know it's anything but! It's hard to express how much I enjoy these. Thank you again!
Good eye!! And thank you for the very kind words ❤️
Great episode with a GREAT ending! Thanks for the deep dive review!
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Man, you have an eye for detail girl.👀👀👀.
I'm always watching
You're so right about taking scenes to add to character instead of plot. American critics and following their lead audiences have become too focused on plot. There are many elements to story, including plot, character, setting, theme, and all the other stuff we learn about in Lit 101. Give them all some space.
Absolutely!!
Just an fyi from a political geek. Election day is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. So, if the 1st is a Tuesday election day will be the 8th. If the first is a Monday, it's the 2nd. For some reason the founders didn't like holding elections on the 1st, I dunno why.
Thank you for helping me with that! I should have known better.
Folks! Rejoice! Another episode of Watch It For Days!!
Thank you for this enthusiasm!
I love this episode. One of the best gotcha moments of the entire series. In my humble opinion.
I agree with you!
I also like his campaign poster. Where he's looking over his shoulder. I always wondered what that picture was trying to convey. Is that picture the embodiment of him "being his own man"?😄
"Sporting multiple 'scarlet letters'..." I was drinking coffee when I heard that. I almost literally did a spit-take snorting and giggling. Wow. :)
That was some top-tier costume design on someone's part!
Haha, glad you're ok after that coffee incident! 😊☕
Ok, politician joke: a man dies and meets St. Peter at the pearly gates. St. Peter says, "Oh, I see you were a politician. We have special rules for them. You have to spend one day in Hell, and then you get to decide if you want to stay there or go to Heaven." He snaps his fingers, and the guy finds himself in a gorgeous penthouse suite. There is amazing food, and his wife is there telling him how much she loves him. He sees the Devil in the room and says, "This is amazing. I thought this was supposed to be Hell." The Devil tells him that reports on Hell are badly reported. He spends an awesome day with all his friends and at the end of the day - snap, he's back in front of St. Peter. "Did you make your decision?" he says. "Well, I don't know about Heaven, but Hell was pretty amazing so if it's all the same to you I would rather go back there." St. Peter snaps his fingers, and the guy immediately feels flames and hears screaming. He sees the Devil and says, "What happened to the penthouse and all the great stuff?" Well, says the Devil, that was when we were campaigning, but now you voted so...
That.... is an incredible joke. It reminds me so much of a Twilight Zone episode!
Hi thanks for keeping Columbo alive. I'm sure Peter would appreciate you're fine channel. I sure do.
Thank you very much, Bob!
I saw my name! Thank you!
Thank you for your generosity!
