This was a great scene. Realizing that he was discovered to be the mastermind behind it all when he looked in their angry eyes, he knew he was going down one way or another, and so he was not gonna let anyone judge him for his crimes by burning himself alive. This movie deserves a little more praise than criticism. It has one of my favorite plot twists!
No words. No action. Just simple but intense realization. How he knows he's Fucked. No unnecessary drama. Like yelling or begging. Absolutely brilliant.

Think about how easily they could have made this an action scene. Some sort of final confrontation, where Patrick either is trying to escape, or has someone hostage, and Robert has to do some final heroic act to save the day. Instead, the scene is just simple and raw, lets us take in the moment of this character experiencing everything crashing down on him. It's brilliant

According to Dan Brown book, the person got killed in the Pope office is head director at Zern not head Vatican guard, and the moment at Sistine chapel cardinals meeting hall is very intense tearing, it is when he knew that the late Pope he murdered was appeared to be Camerlengo real father, as the head cardinal is the only one who know the secret of late Pope child, which means Camerlengo killed his own real father (not adopted), at the moment he recall his last memories with late Pope in tears and feeling extreme guilt before he committed suicide.

So he was the right hand man of the pope who died. Who was actually murdered by this guy. Before hand he stole this antimatter that was a bomb and had it placed under the Vatican church. He then had all the cardinals kidnapped and killed who were favorites to win the new pope. He wanted to seem like a hero when he saves the church from the bomb since he knew where it was. He gets the bomb goes into a helicopter and lets the bomb explode in the sky saving thousands. So the cardinals assume that he was sent by God to protect the church. They were about to crown him pope which he wanted. Until they saw video of him confessing his o the whole thing. After they find out that’s when this scene starts.
He felt like religion was changing for the worst. And he was caught so he self immolated. He knew it was the end and also crime against the vatican had IMMENSE reprecussions.
