- This week’s film breakdown analyzes the San Francisco 49ers’ incredible defensive line. The line consists of Nick Bosa, DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead, Dee Ford and Solomon Thomas. Using the coaches all-22 game film, this video goes in depth to find out why they are so good.

Thanks for watching The 49ers Created the Greatest Defensive Line in the NFL

Is the 49ers defensive line the deepest positional group in the NFL? Who is?
I personally, would go with the Raiders QBs. Sure Derek Carr is fine, but give me Mike Glennon, DeShone Kizer and the God Nate Peterman all day.
Keep this content coming.
AlexRollinsNFL you troll😂😂
Gold Rush is the name of our cheerleaders lol
Seahawks is the best Defense✌️
This is like National Geographic "Watch here, as Bosa is getting ready to use his side scissors move to counter the Tackle's low hand fake, oh and the quarterback NEVER saw him coming, beautiful.."
LOL, pretty much. These guys are apex predators.
Crikey! Look at that fellow.
... and the wildebeest gives up its life so that the pride may live.
Seeing those 4 guys together for a year was so special, man. I hope the Young-Allen-Payne-Sweat quartet in Washington stays together longer.
It took Patience but we finally got what we wanted up front
They just needed the right defensive scheme.. I'm glad that Saleh and Shanahan realized that the Seattle Cover-3 Zone scheme wasn't working, and made the switch to the Wide-9 technique.. SF has the perfect personnel for this scheme, and it has shown throughout the season.. Now if they could only stay healthy on offense.. lol
@@CaptnCrunch247 49ers were running Wide 9 before. It's being used more often now, but it's not new. The defense is basically a Seattle defense with Cover 3 as the main look. Many people seem to think there was some huge change in scheme this year. There was not. The scheme is largely the same as what Saleh was teaching when he first got here.
Joe Woods added some more disguises, but we were disguising looks before too.
The main change is actual game experience by the very young defenders. This knowledge of actual play in the scheme has allowed them to execute much better in the scheme. We saw some of that in the improved DB play towards the end of 2018. Adding edge rush obviously helped too, as it was a major missing piece.
But the basic scheme is still the same as Day 1 of Saleh. Better execution due to game experience and edge rush are the main differences.
@@LoanwordEggcorn - No, they aren't using the Cover-3 nearly as much as they were before. In fact, hardly at all.. They've been running with a lot of man coverage this season, and usually only go zone when they're sending extra pass-rushers. And due to the success rate of their front-four in creating enough pressure on their own, they haven't needed to send extra men nearly as often as before.
I wasn't suggesting that the Wide-9 was new to SF's defense, but they HAVE switched their base defense from the Cover-3, to the 4-3 Wide-9 Technique. And because of this, have transitioned away from the Cover-3, to more of a Tampa-2
Edit: Alex Rollins actually made a video just a few weeks ago explaining why they have transitioned away from the Cover-3.. And I trust his word more than anyone else's, considering the fact that he's one of SF's lead film analysts..
Here's a link to the video:
ua-cam.com/video/bSBaTnlQ3Gg/v-deo.html
@@CaptnCrunch247 Agree there is more Cover 1, but Seattle also uses a lot of cover 1. Both are single high safety. Agree there is more cover 2 and some Tampa 2, but we were also using Cover 2 and Tampa 2 before. So the change is not as large as it seems. Seattle also uses 2 high safety looks.
Also agree there is more man with the front 4 rushing, but it's still fundamentally single high safety.
Robert is actually blitzing more often than I would have expected to force single coverge on our linemen. For example Fred is both blitzing an zone blitzing (faking a blitz then dropping into coverage). Also an occasional corner or safety blitz to overload.
Because of all of that, I disagree with Alex's hypothesis that this is no longer a Seattle style defense. It most definitely is, with some minor modifications for personnel. I did see his earlier video about this.
P.S. Alex works for SBL Nation, not 49ers or NFL per se, but yes, he's getting paid to watch film.
Richard Sherman #25 #TheBest #49ers yes and hopefully next year you retain everybody do you honestly believe a lot of the reason that we didn't get Super Bowl this year was cuz partially uncalled penalties against the Chiefs
Our defense is great now we just need our wide receivers to hold onto balls
Nick Bosa is a better catcher than many of our receivers.
Don´t remind me that because is still have PTSD about last monday.
And a qb who doesn’t throw a possible int every 5 plays.
CinemaPigeon you seem like a fake fan 💀
@@InYourCommentz I've been watching 49ers pretty regularly and following what's going on with them since 2006 season where Frank Gore had his best season, so I disagree. Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary (we are not a charity, we can not give them the game!), Shaun Hill, Trent Dilfer, J. T. O'Sullivan, etc.. are all names I know of. There's been a lot of pain and misery, so I'm going to enjoy what's happening currently as best I can, regardless of whether or not I"m a fake fan, but I like to think I'm quite the opposite, legit through and through.
You might like doing a video on our secret weapon K'Waun Williams, or as we call him Shark'Waun Williams. dude is having a hell of a year and no one is noticing.
Gibster but last year every fan wanted him executed. Let’s not be TOO hypocritical
@@davidmendez9256 I didn't want him gone. I was singing his praises like crazy. I kept saying the dude is an animal in the run game and I felt if he didn't have to cover guys for ever and got to be more aggressive he had some good coverage potential.
@luisito NeymarEsNo1 true but he doesn't usually do single player breakdowns anyways so no worries
I gave William's props on sunday for his efforts on instagram. Like the dude was scraping the week side all game and limited that run all game.
Pro Bowl year
Love these videos! Tough loss on Monday but we got this sunday
I know! I'm so glad that I found this channel.. He brings us such educational content. I've learned so much (more) about football since I began watching his videos..
It was a tough but humbling loss...can't really expect to blitz through the season and not have any adversity..any championship caliber team will face tough challenges. Better to make mistakes in the regular season than playoffs. And that game definitely had a playoff vibe.
@@CaptnCrunch247 Check out Jonnydel's channel. I've learned so much football from it, and he uses current 49ers plays to teach WCO concepts, defense, etc. ua-cam.com/channels/t1LfHRE5eGiacPVtiaC10w.html
Easy ten point victory 😉
@@franksilva4921 LOL ;)
Wow I had no idea Warner was such a key cog in the pass rush not too mention that he is pretty effective at blitzing.
Him being in that empty area of the wide 9 slows down the rushing attack and assist in the pass rush!!!
Excellent breakdown
I'm a niner fan so I'm so excited for this vid
Took time to finally get that d line we wanted🤝❤️💛
luisito NeymarEsNo1 Even when his mind was in the game Aldon was a OLB anyways.
Our d-line put insane amount of pressure on Wilson on 3rd down/passing downs. But we also had horrible edge discipline and over pursuit on multiple critical downs. The scheming for Wilson in my opinion was there, our d-line and linebackers did not execute as cleanly as they could have. The contain was ... non existent.
It’s impossible to contain Wilson.
This is why I’m worried if they don’t become more disciplined. Down this second half stretch we have Murray again(not that I’m worried about the Cardinals as much), Rodgers, Lamar, and Russ again..., all QBs who are threats on the ground. We need to get and stay healthy and Saleh needs to get these guys more disciplined
I believe that even after this season no matter what we will have nothing but great things from this defensive group.. they will get more experienced and therefore will have more discipline throughout their careers.. I’m confident in this because we have great players and a great management and coaching staff that won’t get rid of people but build on it .. very excited for years to come!!
Contain to the edges was excellent. The middle of the field needed to be better defended though. Linemen need to disengage blocks faster when the QB scrambles. I'm sure they noticed it.
@@randomdudehere4828 Agree. Good as these guys are, they're still learning to play. Upside is high for the defense. Entire team is very young and still improving.
Definitely a championship-level defense
Yes! We're in the SUPERBOWL!!!😍😭
I wouldn’t say championship defense they lost in the Super Bowl when it mattered
Nick Bosa, Dee Ford, Arik Armstead, Deforest Buckner , Ronald Blair , Julian Taylor , Sheldon Day , DJ Jones, Solomon Thomas and now Damontae Moore and Kentavius Street. Now that's a stacked DL group
Jahir Valdez yessir
For a #3 overall pick Solomon Thomas sucks
Oh yes lol
@@kydefskywalker6219 you sound like a dumbass, that man is a starter he goes anywhere else, instead he's sacrificing to reap later on.

Dude were you ever a coach? Your analysis is spot-on. Well done my friend well done
I love this channel. I like how you break down the trenches
@10:13 this is such an amazing display of Bosa's speed and talent.. Notice that Carolina lined McCaffery up right off of the Tackle's outside shoulder, in sort of a WB slot, in hopes of getting in a chip-block to disrupt Bosa's timing, and force him back inside.. But to no avail.. Bosa was simply too quick off the line, and McCaffery ended up with a shoulder full of air.. This defense is so much fun to watch!
Edit: If I only had the time to, I could watch your videos all day long.. I appreciate you taking the time to share your expertise with the rest is us.. Keep em' coming!
I look forward to watching these videos after studying for class. Keep them coming!
If you are a niners fan and followed them during the off-season then you already knew our defense was going to be great🤷🏻♂️. Everyone slept on us and we like it that way. If you said we are pretends then keep saying it. No room here for bandwagons
Manuel Astoria I alr called it Bosa was going to be one of the best players but man Jimmy be Nervous he’s learning
This is by far the highest level of film break down that I have watched. Most film is broke down in assignments and I believe even a casual fan can determine that. The technique that is broke down here is next level.
Thanks Pacer, glad you enjoyed it
i love these man keep em coming
As a european casual fan of the game, this gave me great insight into what happens in the defensive line. Thank you for your content
Wow...what an analysis! I’m flabbergasted. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻
Bosa and Ford make this defense go that's a terror on the edge that no team wants to play like ever

Stopped at the 4 minute and had to like this video because your analysis is so detailed and amazing.
There are no other teams to breakdown. Quit asking! What the niners are doing this year is biggest story in the NFL. Bring on Lamar and the Ravens we'll have another awesome video to breakdown
The ravens offense is what the 49ers offense could have have been with Colin Kaepernick. Could have but it wasn't meant to be.
Janco Ice Rockets I heard he’s coming back, not sure on what team tho.
@@pawg206 Patriots really need a backup just saying.
@@pawg206 What team you think should sign him?
Janco Ice Rockets as long as he keep he’s mouth shut. He might just be a good quarterback for them. If jimmy ran a little he will be deadly. Something kap love to do.
just discovered your channel and holy crap all your videos are so phenomenal
Good video. Thank you.
Great content subscribed and binge watching
"It's time to eat" great line 3:36. Sounds like national geographic's shark week.
Love these d-line vids
"This is called a 'nut stunt,' which is hilarious."
We love you Alex.
I love how you talk about the stunts and hands of both d and o line
Thanks Dustin, appreciate that!
Am a Niner ! thanks for the video ! Have predicted a 13;3 season since the start !
This is why you have to factor in the time to acquire personnel when choosing to hire and fire coaching staff. A couple draft picks here, a couple free-agency pickups there, and you create the monstrous D-line that rivals the '85 Bears.
Coaches work hard, but they're more the product of the available talent than the talent is the product of the coaches. NFL coaching is full of guys who've had more than their share of pro-bowlers. There are a handful who make something good out of something not good. The rest are hostages to their GMs.
You go..damn it Jim
Great stuff! Very informative. I'm curious what you would recommend for becoming more knowledgable on this - any books, other UA-cam accounts, etc?
You got it Mike. I saw you on Patreon, make a post and I'll be sure to hook you up. Brett Kollmann's channel in general is a fantastic resource.

Damn it Jim!
only reason this site has so few followers is because only a few have found it so far.. awesome vids...

Thanks for another excellent breakdown. It's very educational as to how D-line play is supposed to look when done well. 49ers D-Line is unusually talented, and it's very well coached.
10:28 Thomas' primary role is an inside run stuffer, not a pass rusher.
Thank you. It's not a run though, it's play action. Can't be an inside run stuffer if there's no run.
@@AlexRollinsNFL Agree that was not a run play, but Thomas' best role in general is inside run stuffer.
Man how crazy would it be to have a super bowl 47 rematch this year
I personally have Packers-Ravens. What's your prediction?
AlexRollinsNFL I’d love to see that, even tho I don’t want to see the patriots in it again, my prediction is still Niners v Patriots (I’m a niner fan)

Love this channel. Do other NFL teams have something like this?
Sean D no
Other teams try to do all of these things (they're all standard concepts), but none have this much talent up front.
Yes
Get well soon Kwon and Ford :(
Great content! Go niners!
Niners DL seemed to get tired late in the season and in the Super Bowl, perhaps due to injuries where Bosa, Buckner, Armstead had to play a greater % of snaps, perhaps they need to draft a DL stud on 2nd day of draft along with OL and WR - this will help the rotations in these positions and keep the stars fresh.
I think it was chasing Mahomes for that long. DL seems pretty set, might be smart to look elsewhere in the draft, but clearly they value building through the line.
Are you going to do some videos about other teams? Would be interesting if you could break down the Ravens blitz packages!
I'm starting to do other teams this week! That's a great suggestion, I'll put it in the queue.
Thanks to Harbaugh 2 picks, bunker and armstead! Thanks coach harbaugh!!! Miss you
That's the truth, know we ready, and still are growing. Ready for the post season. Playoffs are going to show the real dawgs.
And just like that he’s gone 😢😫😭
Oh my goodness if I was a coach the 49ers D-line would be a dream. Cause I would want to play coverage more than blitz and the 49ers DLine is perfect for that. But my boi Mahomes is a different breed 😂💯
Damn, Bosa's teeth look neon green in the thumbnail
Still don't like that we took Soloman over Jamal Adams. But then we may never have been in position to draft Bosa
This works great especially when you combine it with blatant defensive holding.
Best D line Ive ever seen
The 49ers Gold Rush is already taken as the name of the cheerleading squad.
damb this is what's gonna get us a superbowl
Bosa is incredible
Not sure if the defense beats the Bears with Khalil Mack, but it is definitely an impressive Defense!

NINERS ARE BACK BABY!!!!!!!!! LET'S DO THIS RED AND GOLD!!!!!! GOLD RUSH BABY!!!!
Fred Warner got linemen seeing ghosts
Awesome Niners NFC champs this coming Sunday defense defense defense let’s dance the Bosa Nova!
Yeah...we'll see how well that "Defense" is at the end of the Packers/Saints/Ravens/LA/Seattle games...then we'll continue this conversation and talk about how good the defense was/is...
Chargers had pressure on Rodgers all game with just Engram/Bosa we have 4 guys who can rush the qb. Falcons got to Brees a bunch and once again we have more of an edge. Ravens probably going to be the most challenging to defend because of there #1 rushing attack and a mobile qb. If it wasn't for all the turnovers Wilson didn't do much that game. I'm more concerned with this offense. We need to pick up a #1 threat teams have to defend. All we have is Kittle and Sanders who is not getting younger and banged up.
THEM boyz RAw
Champions ! Here comes #6
Wait until they play the Ravens. You thought containing Wilson looked ridiculous.
I fully expect a blow out that game. Injuries took a toll. Think players will get hurt trying to stop jackson. Ravens secondary is fantastic
Please come coach at BYU. We need help.
Damn... watching this video now...our d line is injured and depleted now and this is hard to watch
The speed element of Dee Ford was a massive loss, without him they're not as explosive and diverse, and I believe Buckner is playing hurt. Armstead has looked awesome and Bosa has slowed a tiny bit, overall definitely not the same unit as a month ago
What about the Washington Team's D-line?
This was made in 2019
What happened to Solomon Thomas?
San Francisco vs Oakland raiders is going to be one hell of a game Oakland o-line vs 49ers d-line is going to be great football
@Yeh got to be kidding me
They played last year and the 49ers whooped the Raiders with a backup qb and no pass rush
@@jonathand.9555 you obviously haven't done much research on them I'm a Seahawks fan and ik they're NOT the team they were last year AT ALL they're looking at playoffs this year and they're entire o line got upgraded and they're bullies (Litterally signed douchebag richie incognito who bullied his own teammate) opponents and punches them in the mouth every down and their defense has been getting more dangerous they just beat the chargers the first time since 2013 or something which is huge Gruden also drafted what NFL is considering offensive rookie of the year jacobi Jacobs (I think his name is) who is a running back setting Oakland up with the shortest 3rd downs in the league and the only games Oakland loses is when they rack up penalties (most penalized team in the NFL and the refs are getting less trigger happy which only makes Oakland better they're playoff contenders and I would not look at them with such a ignorant prospective as "we beat them last year" who cares that you beat an anemic team with your anemic team at this moment both teams have great personell matchups I'd love watching please don't make outdated comments about last year

@@AlexRollinsNFL Tbh, I feel Garrett would hit Wilson with his helmet after Wilson jukes him out in the pocket
I am 49ers fan but wait for super bowl win first then say it
That's fair, but who would you say has a better defensive line?
I would say that the 49ers D Line is the best in the NFL, but not deep. This was really apparent in the Super Bowl when they ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. They need a couple more guys.
This past year, they had their 4 first round defensive lineman plus Dee Ford. That's about as deep as it gets
@@AlexRollinsNFL sorry dude, great analysis, I'm a hawk fan, we basically don't have the talent the 49ers have but we have two defensive lines. how do you give up 21 points in the superbowl with like 7 minutes to go. not a great finish I would say. playing on the defensive line takes a physical toll, these guys just couldn't finish.
@@stevenpsmitty It's all good, I'm not a 49ers fan or a fan of any one team, just providing my analysis. I think any team or defensive line would have gotten gassed by the end of that game against Mahomes. Could the line be deeper? Of course, but it's about as deep as it gets in the NFL
