    I keep trying to find a reason to sell my 2003 and buy a new Goldwing, but there just isn't a reason. 130,000 on the odometer and it runs as well as a new one...better actually. I've had dozens of bikes over 65 years of riding and never really "arrived' until I bought the 2003 used but in perfect condition. Best vehicle I have ever owned period !! I will never sell it and you can't wear it out as long as you maintain it properly (easy and inexpensive to do). Besides, at 80, I'll be dead long before this bike gets "old"......

    Started riding at 23 on a Kawasaki mean streak 1600. Two years later, moved to a full dresser harley. I was obsessed with Harley because I’d never owned one. It didn’t take long for me to own it to find out why people complain about them. About 2 years after that, my Dad decided he was going to upgrade from 2002 Goldwing to a 2018. I decided I was gonna give the “old man bike” a try and I was not disappointed. Since then, I’ve bought his 2002 and sold the Harley for the same price I got it for. Now that I’ve been spoiled by the Goldwing, I’m extremely confident in saying I won’t ever ride anything else.

    Loud pipes save lives was a good mantra back in the 90s before cell phones and distracted driving took over people would actually hear you. Nowadays people have windows up, A/C blasting and music even louder to drown out the A/C noise. If they can't hear all the sirens on my fire truck when i'm driving they definitely can't hear your motorcycle.

      The noise from loud pipes is only heard by the traffic behind you because the noise is coming out the back. Cars in front of you don't hear it till you get by them . To late by this time. Turn your headlights on and wobble a little bit.

    • @BP-xe7dw

      I have both. Loud and quiet. I tend to disagree with the blank statement either way. It is all situational. I had so many instances in the city where my loud pipes worked in alerting people about my presence as they were about to do a move. A light blip is all that is needed sometimes. On long trips, I always wear earplugs anyway, regardless of bike loudness. In the city, I do like to have that added presence. Above all, I think the best possible defense, apart from skillful riding, a helmet with high visibility graphics. That is what most other drivers spot first.

      I'm 70 and ridden about every bike and prefer the Goldwing over anything out there hands-down. That's NOT TO SLAM any other Bike. I rode my first one that a buddy wanted to switch for a section of our trip. I had a beautiful EX100 Full Dress Yamaha at the time. It got traded right after that trip because I fell in love with the Goldwing. I haven't looked back or regretted any one of the other 5 before this one. I actually went backwards a few years and acquired an older but "NOW" VERY SAWEEET '84 GL1200 Aspencade for under $600.
      My wife's distant, and almost lost, cousin was in need of the BREAD so He came to me and set the price at $150 but I wouldn't be able to sleep with myself at that price so I opened the garage safe and gave him all that I had at the time which was the $575. Neither of us got messed up too badly by the deal because I have to admit that the Bike was actually pretty rough, No, let me re-phrase that, VERY ROUGH in a lot of ways in the painted dept, the engine was pitted from sitting out in all that weather as well as a lot of rusted chrome and the seat covering was shot from sitting outside, uncovered here in Idaho for maybe 10/12yrs. He inherited it from his Brother killed in the Gulf. I just felt for the guy and later gave him work around the Ranch and the Mountain Property to get him back to living a Godly Life. The Wife was in charge of all that and it always feels better to help than to not.
      It got a very Quick and temporary paint job, quite a bit of the time-tested stand-by rust remover and a ton of good old elbow grease, Rebuilt the front Forks, head Bearings, new fork seals N Fluid, new shifting shaft seal, other misc seals and ALL new wheel bearings front and rear, every fluid thoroughly flushed, a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil to make certain the engine even turned over before anything else got changed out and of-course all new Carb Rebuild kits later were synchronized with my 1973 true Mercury Sticks and lastly a $175 re-upholstered seat and I now love this thing...who can complain with 52mpg out of an Oldie-But-Goody ridden by an equally Oldie Dude.
      I now ride a Bike almost 4 decades old that gets asked about by a lot of other riders. Most people are funny and think it's a lot newer than it is and when they call me on it I show them the Registration and their mouth drops and I just have to laugh WITH THEM.
      Yeah I know, I plead guilty to KINDA getting carried away with all my bragging about any and ALL Goldwings in general way too much and I must confess. I still however, CLAIM I have every right because I'm about as OLD as Them-Thar Hills...feels like it some days too.
      Yes SIR, you are exactly correct, "The Wing IS KING." If you don't mind I'll ad-lib just a tad-bit, "The WING IS & ALWAYS HAS BEEN KING at least for this Ol' Rider."

      @SoloPilot6 4 роки тому +5

      @@ntdscherer : Nope. The original Goldwing was Honda's counter to the HD, before there WERE "touring" bikes. Then they discovered that the main customer base was completely different: it was young professionals, who were putting Vetter commuter-type fairings and bags on them and MAKING the whole "touring bike" thing start. So, just like the invention of the Honda Trail, HUSA saw what other people were doing and followed their customers. They made a deal with Craig Vetter for custom Tupperware, and eventually developed the whole-bike concept found in the GL1500 and GL1800.

    EVERY Goldwing is the greatest motorcycle of all time (except, of course, for the Super Cub, which is a class of its own). Each new generation pulls the whole industry up another step. I find it amusing that you quoted the Harley Scripture before riding (Ps 121:1), but the Goldwing isn't likely to leave you at the roadside waiting for a flatbed tow. The reason you rarely find a used Wing with low miles is because they get RIDDEN, instead of parked and polished. Harley guys ride to show off, Wing guys ride to RIDE. You see the Harleys parked outside of bars; Wings are parked outside of Walmart . . .the next state over.

      Only a certain number of bikes had that problem and it's easy to check by serial number. However, with all Wings of the 01 - 12 versions, it's wise to check the rear aluminum parts for stress cracks. My 03 wasn't on the formal list, but each year I do check it out and so far so good. But that wouldn't stop me from buying an older Wing as long as everything else checked out and the price was right.

    I want to add to something to what you are saying that loud pipes save lives. I don't believe that either. I am told my bright orange Wing with all the lights up front including driving lights turned on all the time, can easily be seen in group rides away back in the rear, even a half a mile away. Visibility save lives as the brightness of the bike catches auto drivers attention, and they then act accordingly. This likely keeps them from turning left into my path, which is a large problem with accidents between bikes and cars. Loud pipes aka Harley, are not a safety feature, just an annoyance to others (IMO)
    Also I have found that cars don't tailgate me much at all, since they recognize the wide rear end of the Wing as a motorcycle and then back off. I'm not sure that is the reason, but it is a fact they don't creep up on me as much as they do while I am driving either of my cars. Strange perhaps but true....
    Visibility and attention grabbing seems to be one key to staying alive.......

    We need every sense to be activated for the cagers to notice us. Drivers are focused on their phone call, the music they play, the text their reading, etc, etc. when I’m overtaking a car, I’m in their blind spot for a moment, if I give it a little throttle, I make some noise, and might get a glance in a mirror, an effort to notice me. So blinking headlights, loud colors, loud pipes, every little bit helps!!!!!😎👍🏍🇺🇸
