It´s time and time again amazing: From the narrating voice you might get the impression that he is a knowledgeable, british gentleman. And then he goes like "UH, UH, THROW IT!". It´s just great :)
A good thing to do when replacing or changing a clutch is to resurface the fly-wheel to prevent unnecessary wear and to help extend the life of the clutch.
Is there a list of the cost of all of this? I mean of all the mods and repairs you have done so far? BTW. great video. One of the best series on UA-cam.
+Stephen Ozoux Thought they were going to take the chance as they took off the flywheel to replace the bearing. Even a good pass with some sand paper would have cut it. But I guess if they didn't do it must have had their reasons.
"I had worse things in my mouth." - Alex Kersten, 2016 Anyway, very nice video. It seems to make it look kind of easy but I think it is really time intense. Seems to be worth it though.
Just discovered that my eunos came with a LSD from the factory. That's after 10 years of ownership. Funny how much more confidence it gives you just knowing it.
+Patrick Archibald I was wondering the same thing. Get a new stock one or machine that shit atleast. I mean come on, you have it all apart already, why not?
x808drifter my thinking exactly. When it's apart, you do that. The old buggered flywheel will cause the new clutch to wear prematurely, and will shudder. And usually you'd fit a lightened flywheel when you upgrade the engine.
+x808drifter Thats the bummer part, by the time you get this far its not that much work to do it right. They didn't do a new rear main seal either, super cheap part.
So much for breaking the clutch in... ACT makes a damn good clutch though. Mine's actually a lighter pressure than stock and grabs much quicker, love it.
nah more like 10 000 kilometres clutches take forever to fully hold and wear in but in real life its more like what u said because everyone doesnt follow manufacturer recommended rules for after
He probably was in gear already before starting the skidding about. He doesn't need the clutch to start skidding I drove the new mx5 a couple of weeks back which had only 130 or so hp and it did fine in first gear
+petej222 Yep, all serviceable items should be done when down there, bearings seals and fluids, and you should always machine the fly wheel when doing the clutch especially if you've been having problems with your old one.
you should of machined the flywheel while you were at it (or replace it i can't really tell condition of it), looks like it had some hot spots and it's always good for that new friction material to have a nice clean surface to contact
I think Alex would be so good in BBC Top Gear. He is so funny guy and he makes Car Throttle so good. But yeah, I wouldnt like to not have him here. Keep up the good work!
Phil's getting there. I love the BOV. I honestly forget which BOV you got but it sounds awesome. I have a turbo EJ8 Civic coupe with a B18B1 swap with a 63 trim turbo and I love it but I want that BOV.
Robert Keeton Wastegates don't really make any noise, they bypass exhaust gasses around the turn on throttle to limit boost so they only sound they make is exhaust sound.
+DriftNick Thanks for the info. I own a turbocharged Honda that I built myself. Wastegates regulate boost pressure by bypassing excess exhaust pressure through either the exhaust housing of the turbocharger or a dump tube. His car has either a BOV or his wastegate is improperly connected causing compressor surge. I've been building engines for 20 years.
+Alex Kersten Looking very much forward to it :) I want to own a Miata myself, but the NAs are very pricy in my area. The Z4 E85/E86 are better value for money in my case, so Im probably gonna go for one of those (and there is no need to turbocharge it, which ofc costs extra in case of the mx5...).
all that I have learned from this project mx5 series is, "we have taken something off the car, we must throw it to each other."
Love how dramatic the intro music is
FINALLY I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS DAY FOR SO LONG
lol me too
lol me too
Same
+Hen Rooster What are you talking about? They still need to tune it fully ;)
Same
Glad you took your time to break the clutch in lol
I will admit ive had a really bad week and even worse day, this video is starting to make me feel better
+Stance Works SR That's good to hear. Get laid and that'll be your week made!
I can't have you and MCM posting videos while I'm trying to finish my homework for Calc II 😂
Better watch ours then
better listen to him
Calc II? Damn I'm in pre calc
+Car Throttle savage
+Car Throttle lol
Did Ethan get to use his new light for this?
Hey there!!
+Engineering Explained I just caught myself reading this in your tone of voice.
+TrueCanad1an In the Dracula voice?! 😂
Well naugh!
It´s time and time again amazing:
From the narrating voice you might get the impression that he is a knowledgeable, british gentleman.
And then he goes like "UH, UH, THROW IT!".
It´s just great :)
That Alex wildlife expert voice... I've literally cried :D
I love that you guys included the ending. I hate seeing a mod installing video then wait for a second video to see it working. Thnx for the upload!
Anybody else who thought that the car was gonna break down when the "A few days later" part came? XD
Thanks for the little tid bit "bring whole drivetrain to running temp to assure the viscosity is right". Gentle wisdom is always appreciated.
A good thing to do when replacing or changing a clutch is to resurface the fly-wheel to prevent unnecessary wear and to help extend the life of the clutch.
Gotta do dis to myn, although I already have an LSD :)
gingium when u doing generation battle
Noah Welch Yeah I'd love to, although I'd think I'd have a shop do it!
Crystal Bills Soon!
Just wondering did car throttle inspire you to get a mx-5 Miata
StInGrAy1020 Gaming Nope! Ive always wanted one, but its really awesome seeing another one built and I hope that Smurfette gets to be as fast as Phil
I've been following the build from the start and I've got to say, it's nice to see that miata really evolve over time.
I'm loving this build
You guys have no idea how much fun I'm having following this build! Fantastic workmanship to your team! :D
I was meant too go too sleep, why you do this
Soz m9
*to *to
+Car Throttle Slamber m9?
+Car Throttle why did you upload so late?
+Razmalia Time zones.
Alex the wildlife narrator. Great video once again, very informative. Keep it up. You guys are a great duo.
"I had worse things in my mouth" LOL!!!
Dick fluid
I'm supposed to be editing a commercial. But can't pull myself away from your videos. Love your work, and phillip is a lucky fellow.
''i have had worse things in my mouth'' Did not have to know that.
MCM and Car Throttle uploading on the same day... Yeeeeesssss
Is there a list of the cost of all of this? I mean of all the mods and repairs you have done so far?
BTW. great video. One of the best series on UA-cam.
Nice dance Alex. Just proves I will watch anything that has an mx5 in it. 😄
damn... the exhaust, it was soo shiny when they putted it on 😢
Kubz ye
+Kubz
*ted
+Kubz putted*
+BIRDMAN_IS_GOD13 Nope, PUT is correct.
+Daniel Hozak putted*
the last minute video clip was glorious alex. More of that pls
I bet in another 10 years he could easily run as a UK top gear host. He is already far better than any of their new guys, bleh.
Chris Harris is amazing
Sabine is an amazing driver and Chris Harris is too
+Acc0rd79 Kick everyone from the new top gear cast, except for Chris Harris and Sabine. Add Alex. Done.
That turbo spool at the end. Beautiful
that is one cool ass intro music thing
I want see more phil, pls dont stop doing videos about this beautiful car.
Didn't bother machining the fly wheel? Looks like it had a few burn marks on it.
^^^ what he said. ^^^
+Stephen Ozoux Thought they were going to take the chance as they took off the flywheel to replace the bearing.
Even a good pass with some sand paper would have cut it. But I guess if they didn't do it must have had their reasons.
+Stephen Ozoux Didn't look like they broke the clutch in much either.
+Stephen Ozoux Also looks like they could've done with a new rear main seal as well. Quite a lot of oil residue on the gearbox
I just did a bunch of work on my car this weekend, his differential is so cute!
13:46 close your eyes
Ahahahaha Gayy lmaoo
+Re Lol!
+Re GONE SEXUAL
+Re LMFAO
+Re (;
That turbo sound now at the end of the video....epic.
WHY NO RESURFACE THE FLYWHEEL????
4:46, a beautiful moment of Miata love.
your car is on a lift, in case u haven't noticed, lower it down if u can't reach it, lol
Yes and then his friend is going to scalp his head.
His mate would hit his head
+Dante Frost he's friend is taller than him genius.
No car lifts have locking points and it’s unsafe for it not to be on the locks and there must not have been any locks in between
Awesome video guys!!
Love what you done with Phil.
"I had worse things in my mouth."

Anyway, very nice video. It seems to make it look kind of easy but I think it is really time intense. Seems to be worth it though.
Just discovered that my eunos came with a LSD from the factory. That's after 10 years of ownership. Funny how much more confidence it gives you just knowing it.
I'm surprised you didn't machine that flywheel, it looked a bit buggered.
+Patrick Archibald I was wondering the same thing. Get a new stock one or machine that shit atleast. I mean come on, you have it all apart already, why not?
+miatamang The same reason they did everything else the way they did whit this car.
Half assed.
+miatamang I concur. Indeed....
x808drifter my thinking exactly. When it's apart, you do that. The old buggered flywheel will cause the new clutch to wear prematurely, and will shudder. And usually you'd fit a lightened flywheel when you upgrade the engine.

So much for breaking the clutch in... ACT makes a damn good clutch though. Mine's actually a lighter pressure than stock and grabs much quicker, love it.
Isn't the clutch supposed to be broken in 400 miles before mad skids and pulls?
nah more like 10 000 kilometres clutches take forever to fully hold and wear in but in real life its more like what u said because everyone doesnt follow manufacturer recommended rules for after
He probably was in gear already before starting the skidding about.
He doesn't need the clutch to start skidding
I drove the new mx5 a couple of weeks back which had only 130 or so hp and it did fine in first gear
damn it guys i have work in 5 hours and you post a video before i sleep. happy to see phil do some skids finally :D
Should of done a rear main seal and machine the flywheel cause there's nothing worst then doing all that and having to do it again.
+petej222 Yep, all serviceable items should be done when down there, bearings seals and fluids, and you should always machine the fly wheel when doing the clutch especially if you've been having problems with your old one.
I really like that vintage looking sealey tool chest! Great video guys.
why didn't you resurface the flywheel?
+Nathan Smith (TheRgamer) and replace the rear main seal, which was visibly leaking. lol.
Haha omg i forgot that as well XDD oh well its hisfault if the clutch don't work one day
+Nathan Smith (TheRgamer) You don't know for sure, they don't show everything they do....
I’ve got short legs too Alex. But I’m 6ft2, no excuse
Why not resurface the flyweel while you're putting in a new clutch
I've got a Miata Torsen in my NA RX7 and it's great.
listen to 13:50 - 14:06 with your eyes closed.
actually to 14:08
+Nathan McNelis haha! 😂
Nathan McNelis lol
Great now my parents think I’m watching porn
The amount of car on that rust was truly spectacular.
+Saúl Belchior No hate!
#1 carguy name!! Garret 😜👌
It's Gareth
+Hanu Trivedi Obviously..👍🏼
Phil needs an official hooning sesh video at the track. Phil needs it! WE need it!!
Damn.... You also should get a lighter flywheel. Btw nice vid
This guy is class!! Tbh i just subscribed last week and love these videos. Cant believe i didn't spot this channel before.

That's a badass MX-5! ...I miss mine
"now what? we gonna hit it with a hammer?"
-Alex Kersten
Oh god , mighty car mods and car throttle video's in the same day 😁😍😍😍😍
I knowwww
+Hugo Almeida Yeah and I was 5 miniuts from going leave youtube a rest and go to bed and BAM Wasaabi and then carthrottle haha
Not replacing the rear main crank seal.... Fail..
Not resurfacing or getting a new flywheel. Fail.....
+mike s Not completely pulling the axles before dropping the diff out also a fail... they made way more work for themselves.
+mike s IKR look at them hotspots.
Love the ending!
If I put LSD in my car, will it get high?
acid is better m8
.....
Amiel John F. Mercado ur car will be very happy
phil is gonna trip out man
Amiel John F. Mercado no
THAT WAS EPIC! So awesome! Super Miata! it's now an MX-5
"I've had worse things in my mouth"
What could be worse than that
He's a bumboy
I wonder how Alex funds his projects...
glad to see that there is some portuguese working with ur project!
Instead of standing on a battery, why not lower the lift a little bit? :P
+David F. So his mate didn't bump his head i suppose ;)
+David F. Because there is someone of normal height with him.
OMG those turbo noises
his Mazda us called Phil and his BMW M3 is called Collins
Phil Collins
you should of machined the flywheel while you were at it (or replace it i can't really tell condition of it), looks like it had some hot spots and it's always good for that new friction material to have a nice clean surface to contact
I like lsd
Hello Mr. Unicorn. how are you?
That turbo at the end 😍
Why you doint just let the hydraulic ramp down a little bit ? Then your are not to small ^^ ?
+gigagames what about the other guy
I love the MX5 project!😊👍
At this rate, this Miata is going to outrun anything.
Give it a few years
glad to see Gareth repping South Africa lol Awe!
Where is Gareth from? What kind of accent is that?
South Africa
+Car Throttle really? where'd you find him? Just a friend of Alex's?
+Jay Bastawrose I think he's joking
+Jay Bastawrose Yea south africa
+Jay Bastawrose Definitely South Africa
them turbo swooshes at the end made my pants tight.
Great Video! :D
mind as well get a lighter flywheel
Thumb drift has your car Alex!
Working on cars is literally the perfect platform for sexual innuendos. And cussing. But that's another story...
Excited to see it drift!
I'm not gay but Phil is just hot
you forgot #nohomo
Gay
I was super hyped for this episode
I think that the only reason he is short is because god made him like that for weight reduction.😂
Maxim Arnold who is god?
I think Alex would be so good in BBC Top Gear. He is so funny guy and he makes Car Throttle so good. But yeah, I wouldnt like to not have him here. Keep up the good work!
i came here because i saw LSD
Alex is funniest car guy in the world..
Good thing that you uploaded, I had nothing to do today.
Phil's getting there. I love the BOV. I honestly forget which BOV you got but it sounds awesome. I have a turbo EJ8 Civic coupe with a B18B1 swap with a 63 trim turbo and I love it but I want that BOV.
+Robert Keeton It doesn't have a blow off valve.
+DriftNick Maybe that's the wastegate noise...
Robert Keeton Wastegates don't really make any noise, they bypass exhaust gasses around the turn on throttle to limit boost so they only sound they make is exhaust sound.

Dude, I wanna see some proper skids!!! xD Epic Vid, epic car, epic presenters! Keep it up guys!
+urwetdreamz More skids coming in our MX-5 Generations video which drops very soon!
+Alex Kersten Oh my god, as an E46 M3 and MX5 owner I can't wait for this. Your M3 generations video was fantastic!!
The 1.6L clutch and flywheel bolt up and is much lighter (which means it revs quicker) and you can still get clutches that handel the torque.
Gareth is an absolute car genius!
I love project MX-5
It all went so smoothly. Not sure if i'm disappointed or happy.
8:03 that wildlife commentary though LOL
Finally a new project MX-5 video
you guys make this looks so hard without air tools.
+SPARTO or a transmission jack :)
after the trio left topgear I was quite depressed, now I am happy to say I have found a replacement
