I saw Phil Ochs at the Mariposa Folk Festival north of Toronto - no lame suit back then. It was pouring rain, and Phil was in a tent stage while the audience was getting soaked. So he told us to change places - we all crowded into the tent, and he kept playing in the rain for over an hour! What a great performer he was.
Sit by my side, come as close as the air Share in a memory of gray And wander in my words Dream about the pictures that I play of changes Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall To brown and to yellow, they fade And then they have to die Trapped within the circle time parade of changes Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind Visions of shadows that shine One day I returned and found they were Victims of the vines of changes The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark It swings through a hollow of haze A race around the stars A journey through the universe ablaze with changes Moments of magic will glow in the night Fears of the forest are all gone But when the morning breaks They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes Passions will part to a strange melody As fires will sometimes burn cold Like petals in the wind We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else One last cup of wine we will pour And I'll kiss you one more time And leave you on the rolling river shore
Can't believe this just now popped up on my UA-cam in June 2019. I've been collecting all the UA-cam videos of Phil's songs for a bunch of years. I'm of that age (70), that grew up on Phil Ochs (and all the rest of the great 'topical' (protest) music singers, writers etc. I always thought Phil was better then Dylan. I was very lucky to see him perform many times in the 60's and early 70's. later. His lyrics were profound, even more so, now 50-60 yrs later when one takes a look at the US and the state of the world overall. I strongly encourage those not familiar with him, to Google him and pull up UA-cam songs here. Thanks Neil Young for the song and words about Phil.
So envy anyone who saw Phil Ochs perform live. I've admired him for 54 years since first hearing him on my radio. Listen to these amazing words! A glimpse into his heart.
"I work for myself" that is so Neil Young. Got to admire this man he is a true legend. I grew up listening to him from Buffalo Springfield, CSYN, and with Crazy Horse. I had several of his albums.

Nobody else could ever write songs like this. Always my hero, Phil. I could not face another day if I couldn't hear you sing. What would I do without you, my beautiful friend?
I was referring to who a 20 year old might relate to of the last acts. I do like Dave Matthews and think he will will be the future of the Farm Aid and in time become a legend. I don't think he was bored on stage but more in awe of who he was watching. He knows exactly who Pete Seeger is !
I am not sure if Dylan is only an artist by himself or somebody else has been pulling the strings behind the scene at the same time (the "system"? secret lobbies?)... I never forgive him for being such an egocentric person while on stage. He is always so indifferent, if not provocative, to his audience. The world needed a hero in the 60s and the music industry allowed Dylan to emerge -in my opinion, he was the least dangerous of all… - Neil is sooo different.......

I too lost a friend to suicide last year. Thought I could have done something more, too, to reach him,to stop him. Be he made the horrible choice. He threw everything away in that moment, to run from himself, and his fear. Thanks Neil, for this great intro, and song. SO glad to be alive and to have been a part of this awesome day at SPAC!
Eco....thirty yrs working crisis has taught me...not so much folks are running from themselves and theirfear as you put it, more that...they have no more left,,,,,,,,and love and support just didnt get there in time. These acts...suicides, touch me in the deepest sad place...i do, however, get it. meg
Who yells out, "come on let's go" when a great musician is sharing a story.
xp2000 - The guy with a stink eye tattoo on his forehead...
Everybody knows somebody who stopped to take a leak when the brains were being passed out.
Actually was me, I'd just had a few lines of coke ey. Meant no offence
My feelings TRUMP your facts 🤩🧐😛😍
A Republican
Mr.Neil Young...i said it once and I'll say it again....MAY YOU STAY FOREVER YOUNG❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Phil Ochs is a legend that many people don't know about. RIP Phil... we miss you
Sit by my side, come as close as the air
Share in a memory of gray
And wander in my words
Dream about the pictures that I play of changes
Green leaves of summer turn red in the fall
To brown and to yellow, they fade
And then they have to die
Trapped within the circle time parade of changes
Scenes of my young years were warm in my mind
Visions of shadows that shine
One day I returned and found they were
Victims of the vines of changes
The world's spinning madly, it drifts in the dark
It swings through a hollow of haze
A race around the stars
A journey through the universe ablaze with changes
Moments of magic will glow in the night
Fears of the forest are all gone
But when the morning breaks
They're swept away by golden drops of dawn of changes
Passions will part to a strange melody
As fires will sometimes burn cold
Like petals in the wind
We're puppets to the silver strings of souls of changes
Your tears will be trembling, now we're somewhere else
One last cup of wine we will pour
And I'll kiss you one more time
And leave you on the rolling river shore
L
Beautiful poem
Thank you for the lyrics!
God those are beautiful lyrics.
I love and respect Phil Ochs, I respect Neil Young too
Can't believe this just now popped up on my UA-cam in June 2019.
@@bjmpac I’ve seen him perform live many years ago and many times. I’ll always miss that. I still listen to his music at home and enjoy it.
I can't believe there was not immediate applause at the first couple of chords, must be a young crowd.
Like under 65?
"I work for myself" that is so Neil Young. Got to admire this man he is a true legend. I grew up listening to him from Buffalo Springfield, CSYN, and with Crazy Horse. I had several of his albums.
I'm in my seventies as well, if someone says let's go, they can go and don't fall down on your way out! I also work for myself at this age! Neil is and has earned his right to be a great singer/ composer!
Neil talking about Phil. My two heroes...kindred spirits...🍂🍂.
folk singer > all other singers...the world needs more folk singers....and more people listening
Who can command a stage like this? With a long forgotten song by a dead folk singer? I LOVE this artist. I love this Phil Ochs song.
Neil does it.
In the balcony that day, Neil at his best. Good to listen to Pete Seeger one more time...Don't cross Mr. Young..
Phil Ochs. Too much greatness for this world.💙
Neil will be Neil, unstoppable and free minded , Cheers to him
what an honor to have Neil Young singing one of your songs - what a shame that Phil is no more there to hear this.
Neil Young calling Phil Ochs "one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived"...You cant' get more right than that! Thank you Neil for a beautful version of Phil's beautiful song. To quote Billy Bragg: "Phil Ochs inspires us still"
The audience member was so rude to yell Come on, let's go." He should have felt privileged to listen to what Neil was saying. Neil was gracious in his reply. He could have been rude in his reply, but was unnecessarily polite.
Thank you, Neil. Long live Phil Ochs. It's up to you young people out there who get it to pass him on to the next generation.
At 64 still wishing I can grow up to be Neil Young!
Haha, and I'm 67 and still wishing I could grow up to marry Neil Young.
You guy's me to. I just love this man.
@@janicejohnson6438 Me too!! LOL
39 here and I can only hope.
one of the greatest musical moments of my life was witnessing this performance. thanks to neil young!!!! this is a song my mom used to sing in the sixties. a song can span a lifetime... thanks neil young!
THis is wonderful, but mine was hearing Phil sing many times during Berkeley Vietnam Day(s) May 1965.
Neil singing Phil. What's not to like?
Neil is an absolute legend
Thank you Neil Young for being so real!!!❤
Beautiful tribute to Phil Ochs. Wonderful 1960 s song. Neils old guitar is showing a lot of wear but still sounds good as ever. Neils plaid shirt, probably had a long time, maybe brought down from Canada long ago.
Love hearing you play, love hearing you say something about the history before you begin...thanks for this and don't change it. Neil Young that's a part of who you are. You're so loved. Always, Cathy Wilson
Wow. Been a Neil fan since the Buffalo. This is GREAT.
Thanks for the intro Neil. Beautiful! And your rendition of Phil's magical tune.
Listening to Neil Young throughout my life tamed me when I was up, yet buttressed me when I was down. How does star dust turn into something so beautiful?
I come back to this video frequently, and most of the time I just want to hear the song, but I always feel bad for skipping to it. lol
One of my favorite alive performers doing justice and paying homage to the late, great Phil Ochs. Thank you Neil, "oh to live on Sugar Mtn."
Thanks, Neil. A great performance. I’m pleased that you brought visibility to Phil Ochs who was a wonderful songwriter.
".. .and it's long as hell". . . about as long as the introduction. Great job Neil, of a great song by Phil Ochs.
Two Greats..Phil Ochs and Neil..
At 3:07 the crowd reacts to Phil Ochs' name; good to hear. As ever, a fine performance by Neil. No surprise, there.
Mr Neil Young is so humble and simple in his approach of any songs even his own songs. Respects Mr Neil Young. He has a great respect for everyone.
I can't think of a better person than Neil singing this, love you Neil 💓
I was in the hospital for 4mths in traction my sister brought Mr cassette player and 6 tapes of Neil young.Let me tell you he was the only one that got Mr thought those hospital days .Thanks.Nril
Thanks Neil!
What a great and inspiring song from Neil! Change is inevitable but it is that thing that is constant!
Yes, life is short Neil but your song will be forever
Nobody else could ever write songs like this. Always my hero, Phil. I could not face another day if I couldn't hear you sing. What would I do without you, my beautiful friend?
Paul Lavan the best composer in lyrics and melody l miss Phil. One of my favorite songs.
He was overcome by the deceiver
If I were a poet I could say how much this performance toughed me.
Love Neil Young and love Phil Ochs - wonderful tribute
I was referring to who a 20 year old might relate to of the last acts. I do like Dave Matthews and think he will will be the future of the Farm Aid and in time become a legend. I don't think he was bored on stage but more in awe of who he was watching. He knows exactly who Pete Seeger is !
god bless you for remembering Phil
I can actually visualize his words in my mind 🙏
Thanks for picking such a classic tune, written by the great Phil Ochs. You add a lot of class to it
Long live Neil Young, you will be deeply missed when you're gone. One of the last Great Rock Stars. I hope I get to see him before it's too late.
make it a priority then thank me
Don't kill off Neil early. He'll outlive Dylan.
Hey Neil is going nowhere. Gutted i missed his concert in Ireland i was in Hospital was listening on a voice recorder on the phone.Got to come back. Most loved briliant songwriter himself and a great man.
I was at the Carnegie Hall show Neil mentions. And backstage. Thank you Neil for your words for Phil, and for singing this gorgeous song.
Wonderful tribute to a long lost troubador 😢❤
