    One thing I notice right away that is fantastic for an affordable laptop, real ports! I loathe the trend on premium laptops away from USB type A ports, but the idea seems to be that if you can afford $1500+ for your laptop, then you can also afford wireless peripherals and a thunderbolt dock.

      So true! That's why I love the Aero & GE-Raider laptops, sure their design/profile isn't as sleek as a Razer or Zephyrus but they pack in all the ports!

    Recently bough an 5500U laptop (HP 15s) and I can tell it's a pleasantly snappy machine with all of the essentials for suprisingly low price of 600 euros. Currently waiting the RAM upgrade to arrive, since the only area it was lacking is that it came only with a single stick 8GB/3200Mhz. Very glad I didn't went for the i5+Geforce MX330 models from other brands - the price is much higher for basically zero to none gain, even worse in some areas than the 5500U.

This thing absolutely wrecks for under $600. Plays Elder Scrolls Online native 1080p low almost as good as my Ryzen 7 1700 desktop. There's no bullshit in the stats. I've checked out the clocks on hwinfo64 and it frequently boosts to 4ghz and it sustains 1.8ghz on the GPU at all times. I upgraded from an Ivy Bridge i5 MSI GE60 laptop with GT 650M. @Dark Souls They were better value than Intel. On sale they were cheaper than dual core i3's, a lot faster in multi core performance and had a better GPU (nearly the same as the current gen AMD ones but on a larger transistor lithography). Also many laptops with the Zen architecture (mostly Lenovo ones) had single channel memory which really gimped performance. The HP Envy X360 on the other hand has always had dual channel memory. So it's faster than its competitors from that time with the same chip.
      But I was mainly looking for a good laptop with a very cheap CPU (it could have been a Celeron or Athlon for all I care). Because my mom wouldn't notice any CPU performance difference but would notice a crappy screen, crappy keyboard, crappy speakers and the lack of an SSD. She uses an external mouse so she wouldn't have noticed an awesome or crappy trackpad so this mediocre one is fine.
      It's usually in power saving mode but with the screen brightness up. The cooling fan hardly ever goes on. Still there are never hitches in performance but that is to be expected. Because even the 2.5W Intel Atom CPU's from 2014 could already run Windows and basic tasks without any problems (those chips were mostly held back by the often very cheap eMMC flash they were usually combined with).

I don't think in a blind test you would be able to tell which is which, Pages and tabs open up similar both are quick in single and multi as long as core count and threads match.. Not a fan of refreshes that are mostly rebrand. However, I understand why this might be the way to go for AMD: The manufactoring process.
    Basically, from what I've read, Zen 2 was made on TSMC N7, Zen 3 is on N7P. They need to use their resources, allocated by TSMC, efficiently.
    So it seems that they decided to use N7 for most of the parts with lower margin and rather than backporting Zen 3 to N7, they keep using Zen 2 there.
    Yeah, maybe they could have crushed Intel's hope in mobile, but at what cost? Would they ditch desktop CPUs? High-end GPUs?

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen 3 роки тому

      It's the problem with monolithic design, and it will never fully go away until they master the chiplet approach down to the single core and single cache block. Consumers expect to pay for the performance level they're getting, but AMDs expense on each chip is the same. Therefore they need to make a calculation on how to not cut into their top end sales with too good mid range products, and likewise not eat their midrange by making the low end too good... but only releasing three laptop CPUs (one in each class) won't fly with OEMs and SIs either, as they're the ones who REALLY insist on segmentation. They refuse to pair a top end CPU and GPU with in a budget chassis with a "good enough" display. Each component needs to be "in the same class" in their eyes, so if AMD wants to be represented from $400 laptops to $2500 laptops.. they need to have "something appropriate" for each "class". Otherwise they'll just put Intel chips in the missing slots.
