Massive yabbies, I hit the yabbying jackpot

- These yabbies are big in just about anybody's book. In my book they're certainly massive. I have not caught big yabbies this big sine the 1980s when I caught some true monsters up near Lake Urana.
My usual favourite yabby dams have all been effected a lot by the recent flash flooding and torrential downpour. They have filled with fresh water which has turned a dark, almost black colour and the yabbies are just not biting.
So I decided to try and different dam, somewhere that I had been eyeing off for quite a while, and boy am I glad that I did. I hit the yabbying jackpot!
I caught quite a few yabbies of varying sizes, and kept the 12 biggest while throwing all of the smaller ones, and yabbies with eggs back.
When I got home I measured the largest yabby. I laid the yabby on the bench, stretched out its claws and tail. From the top of it's claws to the tip of it's tail it was a touch under 28cm.
When I was catching the big yabbies in the super yabby dam recently (the one that is now full of fresh water) I measured the biggest one the same way and it measured 23cm. I though that was big!
Unfortunately the GoPro makes them all look about the same size, and my large hands do my now favours whenever I hold up a yabby for a photo.

awesome, first time hearing of a Yabby, I always heard them called "Craw fish" or "Cray fish" is it just a local thing? or are they different spiecies of craw fish I wonder :D make for good cooking.

Yabbies are similar to crawfish but are a little bit different.
Yabbies are the Australian version of crawfish. The word Yabby comes from the aboriginal word for them "Yabba".
Our crayfish are much much bigger.

@@robbiefishing oooh thanks , yeah those things are freaking huge compared to the ones we have here in the states. the ones you threw back were as big as ours would normally get , minus the ones in the midwest u.s.a

Lovely to see. Grew up on a farm in WA with yabbies in 12 or so dams. The sound of pulling out drop nets full of flapping yabbies will always be nostalgic.

Robbie has done cooks. Best way is boil for 10 mins and peel like he has already done. I then did a chilli linguine. Substitute yabbies for and prawn recipe.
Props on checking for eggs mate!! Need everyone to do that. I’d love to see people do the same with saltwater nippers.

Some good sized yabbies there. Good on you for taking only what you need, especially the one with eggs that you put back into the water. By not being greedy, you have ensured that there will be plenty to collect in the future.

@@robbiefishing Goodmorning Robbie i'm in Robinvale near Mildura so apparently this town has moved to cairns lol, we usually get the dry heat only which you can still move about, but not this time round. Its been unusually humid, however it doesnt stop us all here from yabbying and the perch are on the run here. Everyone crawls out from the struggling aircons lol and hit the water from 5pm. Im local and used to the high tempts but this year is rediculous lol everyone i know here has copped a seat belt branding lol. You discovered the secret. Here in the US, if there isn't cover in the form of rocks and/or vegetation, you're wasting your time. Besides, crayfish here eat all of the 'biomass', I guess you'd call it, that grows all over the submerged vegetation. Also, in Louisiana the locals use 'melt' for bait. (that's what they call it) it is actually the spleen from slaughtered cattle. It is has tough outer membrane with a sponge-like interior. That interior looks as if a liver was grown inside the sponge. Every time the crayfish (yabbies) bite or pinch, fresh blood is released. The bait will last for well over 24 hours, if you care to fish that long. Find a local custom slaughter service and ask them to save the spleens....
And! Pay a little more attention to your sound levels, please. I have to grab the remote and drop it down about three notches every time the music comes on. Just saying....
I rotate hobbies on a short term basis like an addictive nut job. I just mastered cheese making, yabbi gathering is next on my list. I will devour Canadian, Alberta yabbis. This is an imminent reality. 😁 Your videos are well above adequate. Respect.

AWESOME VIDEO ROBBIE! Ripper yabbies! Me and my pop went fishing this arvo pop caught a 55cm cod that we released and I caught a 50cm cod that we put back they were really fat cod we would of caught more but a couple people kept swimming in front of us pop had annoyed look on his face so the lady said if u don’t want people to swim where your fishing go somewhere else we were there first but we just went back because we knew they were just tourists that didn’t know any better

Thank you so much Katherine. My understanding, and I could be wrong, is that your drawfish are very similar to out yabbies. Out crayfish (Murray crayfish) are massive. The biggest of the yabbies in this video would be about half the minimum size of Murray crayfish! Thank you so much for watching from the U.S. I love the USA.

I stretched the biggest yabby out on the bench and it measured almost 28cm from the tip of the claws to the tip of the tail. Has anybody else ever measured a big yabby this way?
robbiefishing that’s huge! Never measure yabbies like that but I daresay the biggest one I’ve seen would’ve been maybe 20cm at most tip of the clap to tip of the tail. What’s your biggest Murray cod to date by the way Robbie?

robbiefishing Hi Robbie I had a huge yabby that I kept as a pet for a couple of years.He went beautiful blue.Couldn't keep anything else in the tank,killed all the goldfish,any other yabby you put in there .A lot of people don't realize that they are primarily vegetarian,eating algae etc.The favourite food for mine was frozen peas lol.If keeping them as a pet it's best advised not to give them too much meat as any bits they don't eat will spoil the water.
James Calley yes this was my understanding too I was told a long time ago by one of the guys who worked on my grandfathers vineyard and he believed they were not eating the meat but rather trying to remove in from the environment
James McHarg he keeps them in a bucket of water between fishing to his home to keep the yabbies alive and fresh... of course they’re gonna die he’s gonna eat them anyway?? Free lesson for you... the chemical compound that makes up of water is H2O the O part being oxygen... ?

Rippa Vid Robbie I use to get Yabbies out of a private dam years ago and they were huge and always a beautiful blue colour we only took the big ones which averaged around 7 inches long crystal clear water and it was about 4 or 5 mtrs deep with a fair bit of weed and no fish in it only Yabbies and they were delish.
