An old Aboriginal bloke showed me how he caught the shrimp in the Edwards river. He had a metal 20 litre drum with small holes poked in the bottom and sides. He tied a piece of velvet soap inside and loosely filled the drum with gum leaves. Not sure how good the soap would be for the water but it worked fantastically.
For sure the soap n tin works, we used a few 4 litre olive oil tins with the soap in a bit of stocking wired too the back of the tin. Trick was offset the soap too the pull strings so the shrimp couldn’t back out as it got pulled out. Forgot the important bit, plenty of holes in the bottom of the tin to drain fast on extraction.
Oh hail the mighty Trangia!!! Got my one in 1984 and it still kicks butt! One of my most memorable trangia moments was making a batch of coffee for some school friends to warm up in a windy blizzard at the Snowiest. (Hint, warm up the metho in the burner in your pocket). We sat inside the car while the water boiled outside. Still remember seeing the snow land on the top suddenly melt n evaporate. Your one is looking a whole lot better than mine in condition.
to me, it looked very much like the shrimp/prawn had just finished molting their shells and this reflects the very light colour after cooking. Even tho youre catching in the day time, the moon phase is super important for numbers and hence you get more that are ready to molt rather than just molted. 3 or 4 days before and after the new moon is best.
@@robbiefishing no probs, up in NSW in the Myall lakes, there are awesome fresh/brackish water prawns and although we can get em anytime of the month, its always better for quantity and quality if you use the moon phase as a guide. the meat is much sweeter if theyre ready to molt, and very tasteless for soft shelled newly molted ones. PS. dont sit around replying to my comment, lol, get out there and make some more vids. im addicted mate. Good stuff
Fresh shrimp from the fast waters of the narrows In Mathoura/Barmah ( cross border scenario). THEY ARE HUGE AND DELICIOUS! Besides the small carp infestation last December in the Murray, the shrimp and yabbies thrived. I reckon chilli and garlic shrimp will rival any dish. 😃👌🇦🇺👊
Awesome. I think these ones would have been improved with some chilli and garlic too, but I wanted a "raw" taste test if that makes sense. LOL We get some monsters here in Wangaratta too.
I love ur laugh and I also how ur always so excited to catch things I’m just like u I go yabbing and crabbing with my crab pots and recently I caught a 50cm dusky flathead
"My wife, catches fish, to lure the birds, to take the photos!" It almost sounds like a Cottee's commercial Robbie LOL. I've never tried freshwater shrimp so this was a really interesting video, thanks mate
Freshwater Paratyids ARE nice to eat. I know a few on the Murray that like netting them. I have cooked them on the BBQ a few times, along with yabbies. You just need a LOT for a feed! The bigger 1s will be tastier.
I'm going to hope fully do this on the weekend now thanks Robbie love the good work keep it up every time you make a video I always have abit of a laugh (with you not at you) haha
great video mate. More wild catch and cooks would be awesome from you ! Recipe idea - low fry Shrimp, Garlic, chilli, spring onion and pre cook some rice. You could test your luck at a survival day of living of what you catch. Thanks for the inspiration
you should just get a landing net and run it through the reeds that's how i get them in the brisbane river. I am thinking of starting a fishing and sailing channel

If I catch any shrimp big enough I will try cooking them . Did you know the shrimp up north are called "cherubin and they are huge? They are caught and cooked all the time.
Ok mate, ill come up with a recipe for us to test these shrimp proper, lol. We might need to smash a few spots to feed us both, lol, that was a little on the lean side. lol. Good stuff brother. ATB Moose

I am guessing that spices make the smaller ones taste better because they have a more bland taste when small. I bought my Trangia in the 1980’s and it’s still my go-to stove when travelling. Simple is often the best.

Sure is great mate. I love mine too. Very handy, very basic and very practical.
Fill the collapsible nets with gum leaves the shrimp feel safer and are attracted to the smell, love the vids mate
Yeh that’s what I do a bar of soap works as well
U won’t believe what I caught on a 3 inch spinner the other day... the tiniest shrimp!!! Great video once again
hahahaha that's funny. It takes skill to do that my friend!
At 16:32 that music scared the crap out of me after that I was laughing at myself

You kill me dude! I love how your having a blast all the time. Us old fat guys get more fun from fishin than chasin women anymore
