20 years ago I was looking at farming crayfish with a rack of tanks and a cheap above-ground pool in a shed in my backyard. Got told by a bunch of people it was a pipe dream, so I let it go. 10 years later I ran into a guy who had done exactly that and was making nearly $1M a year in live export who started out the same way. Spewing! lol. You picked up a good feed, but also some good breeding stock for a farm! ;)
I enjoy the yabbie videos most of all as it brings back some wonderful memories of my childhood Cheers for your awesome efforts they are much appreciated
Hello rob , well you hit the jackpot at this venue, mate that closing shot of them all cooked and ready to looked awesome...well done. Mate your certainly getting your share of rain ! Rob all the very best to everyone, I'm on Christmas tree duty for a very special young lad 😊 Thanks mate 😎🏴
Thank you so much Michael. Its currently 13 degrees and hailing here with science in the hills. A cold day for the middle of winter let along a week out from summer. This is absolutely incredible.
Pretty sure you are in Victoria Robbie and if so here is a genuine tip for you. IF either Lake Hindmarsh or Lake Albacutya fill with the current flooding events, get there with a few mates. In 1975 after Lake Albacutya filled a group of us went yabbying there, limits weren't as they are now (think it was ten nets and I don't recall if there was a bag limit then). Water colour was pretty much same as that dam and the lake was literally crawling with yabbies of all sizes. Nets we were using were the same size as yours and I am not exaggerating in stating we were pulling them up half full of yabbies (and the odd carp which was great for additional bait). We feasted like Hobbits for the three days on the claws and brought back the tails (without shell). Never heard or seen anything like it since...
Thanks Barry. Yep, I'm from North East Victoria mate. I was born in 1975! I have heard stories of people pitting a dead sheep in a trailer, then backing it into Albacutya. Drive forward an hour later with a heap of yabbies in the trailer. Haha There's no water in Albacutya that I know of, but Hindmarsh is currently about half full I believe. Can you remember how long after it filled that the yabbies turned up?
@@robbiefishing Pretty sure they were around not long after the water got into the lake. I remember we planned the trip after hearing the story of a diver who stated that there were so many of them they were travelling around in swarms AND this was in Winter which is not normal. We went there around this time of year (and it still got cold on that lake at night) but they were catching them in large numbers through to at least April of each year though there was some activity all year round for several years (1979 was a really big year there). There were a number of professional guys permanently there for a good while. Some weekends (like Easter) you couldn't find a spot to drop a pot and there were fights over "yabbie poaching", camp sites etc. Pretty sure that at one time a gun was either pulled on someone or actually fired during an altercation but we never had an issue.

About 30 years ago after a good flood the oil tree lagoon out near Balldale filled after being in drought for years, the quantity of yabbies was amazing. Our opera house nets would be half full over night. It might be worth a drive. If i still lived over there i would take a look myself.
Hi mate, Oil Tree is full all the way out to the road. I went over there 3 weeks ago. It's all on private property though. I do have access permission for Lake Utana though and can't wait to get up there yabbying. Can you remember how long it took after it filled for the yabbies to go nuts?
Very few have been got so far, there is several flood ways that are accessed just off the road and plenty of locals have nets in or scooping when they run, warmer weather hopefully brings them out
@@douggiedevil Awesome, thanks Douglas. I have my eyes on a few of the big similar swamps down here. I'm just not sure how long it takes for them to turn up.

I can also recall as a young boy in the mid to late 70s catching yabbies by hand as they crossed the flooded road between Morundah and Urana. I love watching your content Robbie. Great work.

Mossies are native as well doesn't mean they are a good thing.
The reason they are putting in pipes and filling in channels is due to the loss of water due to evaporation and the cost of the upkeep of the channels. Some channels are lined with black plastic due to constant leaking issues.
