  • Japan has gained another island after an undersea volcanic eruption 1,200 km south of Tokyo created a new landmass. The tiny island emerged following a series of eruptions that began last month near Iwoto island, part of the Ogasawara island chain in the western Pacific, according to experts.

    While it will continue to grow, there is also the possibility it will shrink or disappear altogether. Erosion, the wind and the waves, will wear down that lava rock until it is below the surface.

      There's a new island called Nishinoshima in Japan (somewhere in the pacific). They are already doing an investigation of the ecosystem on that island already.
      I heard that there are no plants yet, but there are some species of birds that settled, and maybe some bugs (not sure about bugs)

      Chances are that unless future eruptions occur in the near term, this island will erode away like a lot of other volcanic islands. It takes consistent eruptive activity to build an island that can withstand the erosion of the ocean.

    This is how Hunga Tonga volcano started
    A massive caldera that creates a small island and then some years later it violently erupts destroying the island and creating a tsunami
    This volcano is also a very large submarine caldera

    this reminds me of that chapter of Doraemon where Nobita and Doraemon intentionally created new island to avoid taxes and live freely in "their own" island using volcanic eruption

    It’s a hotspot it forms a row after explosion just like what it does with Hawaii and it’s near the earths crust and where the magma rises up from there on

      Actually this isn't a hotspot volcano. Iwo Jima as a volcano is more of a stratovolcano that is formed from plate subduction rather than a mantle plume. This volcano can produce some really large explosive eruptions that you don't see from volcanoes like the Hawaiian islands.

      Actually the earthquakes are part of the reason why it won't be lost - The islands basically sit at the intersection of a handful of tectonic plates, and their movement/collisions with each other cause earthquakes, volcanism, and the accretion of the terrain, which is what lead to the formation of the islands originally
