    Great insight and I think you’ve hit the nail on the head, the buyers of the GX and 2024 Land Cruiser are going to be a lot of new buyers and not those coming from the older models. Personally speaking, is too early to tell on what the sales numbers will be, it may be similar to what they were in the past….in the end, we obviously are disgusted with the price increase of Toyota cars, but, all manufacturers are increasing their prices and even Toyota takes a step back in build quality or reliability,it’s probably still better than the majority, thus, they won’t lose much of the market share. Time will tell. Keep making your videos.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  2 дні тому +1

      I think you’re right, the thing that will work against them is the drastic price increase. A loaded Land Cruiser is $20K more than a loaded 2024 4Runner. A loaded GX is about $15K more than a 2023, and so for someone buying in cash that’s a LOT more to shell out, and for someone financing that could easily be another $500/month more depending on interest rate. Although we know people are stupid and will go into ridiculous debt to buy what they want, I do think that will automatically rule out a substantial number of buyers. I’ve noticed Tacomas getting some pretty big discounts here and selling well below MSRP on the used market in my area.

    I like the Apple watch vs Rolex comparison. I like analogue gauges and dislike digital gauges for the same reason. There is something more elegant and timeless about a well-executed analogue watch face that a digital watch face will never have. Same goes for the gauges in vehicles. Why am I paying more for a digital gauge that costs less to make than an analogue gauge that costs more to make.

    • @joshjamescars

      Yah agreed. This is like the alternating round and curved edges all.the phone companies do to make you feel like you're missing out. It's a psychological trick that really provides no ascertainable value for the vast majority, and in fact should be discounted regardless of the capital.cost becuase it is sure to have more issues over time. The used market will ultimately be what pushes that dynamic to the surface and calls out the car makers for such pursuits. There is a reason the newer cars are not holding their values

    Good summary. We have to accept that the GX460 has been retired, and a similar but different model has taken its place in the lineup (price wise). Really, the new GX is just a fancier version of the LC. Not quite a “real” Lexus. Or what a Lexus has historically been. I believe you alluded to this in the past, when you mentioned Lexus’ motto was “the pursuit of excellence”. Now it’s “a super nice Toyota”. Sort of a bespoke Toyota.

    • @PWCDN
      @PWCDN 3 дні тому

      its not really fancier, its just an LC with more options, if you get the base model, there is almost zero difference beyond the power train. You get a base model MDX, you will feel a difference to a Pilot touring.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  2 дні тому

      I agree with both of you here. The GX is definitely not a luxury vehicle, and @PWCDN is right that you feel a difference going from a Pilot to an MDX and id say the same is true going from a Pathfinder to a QX60. But going from a Land Cruiser to a GX is almost a step down without the buttons and bespoke steering wheel and the same is true of going from a Grand Highlander to a TX.

      @joshjamescars  День тому

      Yes but Lexus made a ton of changes in every respect to the 460 which itself was based on a premium product. The new Lexus vehicles, to the others’ comments, aren’t more premium than their Toyota counterparts.

      @@joeblack1052 I meant current versions (Lexus) are just a little tarted up compared to previous models which were much nicer than Toyota counterparts. Hey Josh, do you think the 1958 is worth the price after your week of driving? I spend about 30 days a year outdoors hunting and fishing. So with that into consideration... Or do you think it's too striped down and basic after your time with it, and go up to land cruiser model trim? Mind you i plan to keep the vehicle for at least 15 years.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  2 дні тому +1

      DEFINITELY not worth the new price. And if you need it to last without question for 15 years, I would wait until there’s a little more long term data on the reliability of this drivetrain. The T24A engine has only been out since the 2022 model year and the turbo/hybrid combo came out a year later in 2023 in the RX500h. That’s not enough real world time on the roads in the hands of owners to make a determination. You may have seen that the V35A TT V6 had catastrophic engine failure and the new Tacoma is having transmission failure. I won’t say that is typical but there are issues that will only come to light when cars are on the road in the hands of actual consumers. So my advice is, if you don’t need a new car immediately, give it a couple years. The other reason I say that is that like I say in the video, it will be interesting to see how these do on the used market. If you could get one in 2026 CPO for $40-45 instead of $55, that would be a GREAT buy.

    Toyota is using its legacy as a pricing strategy. I would call it nostalgia pricing. I believe this market will eventually even out as CPOs hit the market in 1-2 years. However, with the Lexus GX, the interior quality can be improved with more leather and wood trims. I still think Lexus is trying to figure out their blend of modern design with Luxury materials. If Lexus could copy the interior material choices of the Range Rover, they would have the perfect car in the GX550.

    Spot on! It is a real shame that Lexus is moving away from their heritage as a luxury brand towards sporty tech. Honestly, I fear that they are more interested in pleasing the automotive reviewers - trad media and social media alike - who, unlike you (which is why I love their channel), seem to like fast and techy, more than their customers who want a high-quality, luxury option.
    I know you are not a fan, but this is where Hyundai is being smart and giving great fit & finish - i.e., the luxury you used to get with Lexus - with a naturally aspirated V6 under the hood in their Palisade Calligraphy as well as their Genesis GV80, both of which are in the $60K range. JD Power ranks Hyundai and Genesis as more reliable (slightly - not talking a big difference here) than Nissan and Infiniti - funnily enough, both Hyundai and Nissan rank higher than their luxury brands - so there are other alternatives that are arguably better than the Infiniti QX60 or 80.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  2 дні тому +1

      The problem with Hyundai/Kia/Genesis is that they don’t have the long term reliability record that Toyota and Honda do. If you haven’t ever heard of the Theta engine failures, that’s a good one to look up. Are their new products better? Possibly. But the GV80 also has had a ton of reliability issues and depreciates by around 50% in 3 years (you can buy a 2021 GV80 with around 25K miles in the low to mid $30s). The Stinger was another one that had huge potential but ended up having issues as well. If someone likes Hyundai/Kia/Genesis vehicles my advice is to do the same thing you’d do with the Germans and lease. If it ends up being solid, then maybe buy it out at the end of the term, IF the value of the buyout is less than the vehicle’s depreciated value which it sometimes isn’t, especially on Genesis vehicles.

(Though maybe that is going as well - I'm calling out you, the V35A-FTS 3.4L engine! 😀) Just with the suggestion that anyone looking for an alternative that the only one is the Infiniti QX80. Nissan used to be a good company, but ever since Carlos Ghosn, its quality has been suspect, not even as good as Hyundai.

    • @joshjamescars
      @joshjamescars  День тому +1

      @I_like_pears I disagree with that. Nissan and Hyundai are at around the same place, though Nissan has some products that are really solid. The QX80 and Armada’s engine, for example, is the VR-series V6 and the basic architecture has been around for well over 10 years and has had all the kinks worked out in GT-R, Q50, and other products. The Armada also offers a ton of value for what I’m hoping will be a good price. It’s a Patrol which had always been the direct competitor to the full size Land Cruiser as opposed to the Sequoia that we now get here with no full-time 4QD.
