    It's a shame this channel isn't more popular. After a certain point, it's more valuable content than your main channel (you can only see so many defense encounters before they all start to look familiar, though it's always good to reinforce lessons you've already learned)

    This channel -- especially each Friday's discussions with Tim Forshey -- is a gem.
    Today's discussion made me consider a corollary to the "distance buys you time, and time buys you options" mantra that could apply for home defense. Strengthened doors, a safe room, video doorbells, external and internal cameras, and so forth can buy you time in a home defense situation -- and that time gives you options. As y'all said, whilst deadly force is an option in home defense it needn't be the only one. Given the consequences of a perfectly legal self-defense shooting it should ideally only be used only when the other options are even worse.

    The 4 D's of home defense. Deter, Detect, Delay, and then Defend. The gun is the last line of defense. Deter can be things like lights and signs, make your home the least palatable to the criminal element compared to your neighbors. Detect would be cameras and security systems, delay is making entry to the home harder with solid doors, security plates, window film, ... but delay can also mean making sure everyone knows where to go in an emergency to improve defense. Last is defend, when the threat is imminent you, or your family, should be able to stop it quickly. Make sure everyone knows their part.
    As for shooting. It's not WHERE you shoot someone, it's WHY you shoot them.
    But remember that securing a home means securing against common risks. Do you have the right number of fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, proper GFCI outlets in wet locations? Is you home secured and insured properly against hazards you can't just fix like weather risks? Do you monitor for water leaks? Laser focus on a criminal threat may blind people to other risks.

    • @vikramgupta2326
      @vikramgupta2326 2 роки тому

      Absolutely correct, those other risks are statistically more likely. And that's coming from me, a guy who did have his front door kicked in by an intruder.

    • @vikramgupta2326
      @vikramgupta2326 2 роки тому

      @David Penny Hello sir, I don't mind at all. What basically happened is the intruder thought no one was home and was so startled when I yelled at him he did a 180 and bolted. It was an attempted robbery. This happened 22 years ago. Two story house, 90 degree staircase with a landing at the top that looks directly down on the front door. We had gone to bed especially early because of odd working hours and it was winter and all the lights were off. I was awakened by a crashing noise. Then another. I jumped out of bed and as went into the hallway, another crash and the front door flew open. All lights are still off at this point. As front door flies open, a silhouetted figure casually strolls into my foyer. I yell from the top of the stairs 'You're dead M...F!!!". HE BOLTED. Probably thought I had a gun, but honestly I had no time to grab so much as my glasses. Several months later, I heard someone had been arrested who had been involved in a string of robberies in the area, but no way to know if it was same guy. I got ADT installed after that.

    • @helios92x26
      @helios92x26 2 роки тому

      No, it certainly should. You get to be in FULL control of the space you occupy, and as such limit the ways that an aggressor can make their way to you. You get to create a fatal funnel for any aggressors, so there's a lot less variables for you. Police can be as late as they want while you train sights on the(preferably barricaded) door that accesses the room your in.

    @Active Self Protection John, I used to be on #TeamThinMints for years, but in the past few years, they’ve gotten an aftertaste, so I’m now on #TeamTagalongs instead. But just like with the Thin Mints, they’re even better straight out of the freezer with a big glass of cold milk.
    And on the SUPPOSED subject of this video (because we know it’s all about the Girl Scout Cookies), while I do have my front door reinforced with 3” screws, I can’t help but notice that just a few feet away is this HUGE hole in the wall that is closed with nothing more than glass… and there are more of those things on other sides of the house, too. And with respect to making a safe room by getting a steel door and reinforced frame, I have to point out that interior walls are made of gypsum-board and 2x4s… and they are INCREDIBLY easy to break through, even by accident. So what’s the point of reinforcing ONLY the door?

    • @bwofficial1776
      @bwofficial1776 2 роки тому

      For some reason home invaders don't like to go through windows. It could be because breaking glass is loud and leaves sharp fragments that they have to lift themselves up and crawl over. You can get clear security film to increase the shatter resistance of windows and locks to prevent them from sliding open. If someone's breaking through your walls to get you, you're facing a slasher movie antagonist and you'd better have some firepower to back up the door. If you want to completely reinforce a room you can put wire mesh under the drywall to buy time. Unless you live in a bank vault it's all about buying time for you and the authorities to arrive.

    • @KrisCox
      @KrisCox 2 роки тому

      @@bwofficial1776 Oh, I freely admit that any real-person-affordable safe room is strictly about buying time (and, frankly, so are the ones built like bomb shelters; you just get MORE time with them). But knowing how insanely easy it is to break gypsum board accidentally, even when you’re trying to be careful (hey, I can be clumsy, and I’m not exactly a featherweight), I can tell you that I don’t trust walls made from that and 2x4s on (if you’re lucky) a 16-inch center to protect me from anyone angry enough with me to break through/down my door or come through my window. If they can’t stand up to someone like me tripping, they sure can’t stand up to an angry adult who’s TRYING to get past or through them. And if you’re unfortunate enough to have 24-inch centers for the interior walls, that’s even worse.

      @bwofficial1776 2 роки тому +2

      Could be that. Glass also makes a distinct and loud noise when breaking, leaves sharp stuff behind that you have to crawl over, and you have to lift yourself up over the sill. Criminals are lazy and don't like stabby pieces of glass.

      The issue is that the sill of my windows is plenty low enough to step over. Yeah, window glass is awfully stabby, but it takes a lot less time to break the glass and clear the shards than to break through a decent front door. And let’s just completely ignore the sliding glass door on the back patio… please. I had to pay to replace the outer pane of that when I moved in here; I don’t want to pay to replace both panes.

    Question for Mr. Forshey or anyone else who is legally savvy:
    If I'm legally carrying a concealed firearm and get into a physical altercation with someone, and defend myself successfully without ever drawing my firearm, does my possession of a legal firearm have any bearing on my legal defense? Let's assume that my attacker never used lethal force and that I can prove I was defending myself using non-lethal force.

      What John said. There's an interesting case in Virginia where a man had a pistol in his pocket on his own residential property and pointed another weapon at intruders driving up his dirt road. HIs family called sheriffs for back up. When the law arrived, they searched the homeowner as he had a weapon out. He was arrested and charged, not for the weapon he had pulled and pointed at the intruders in his private road, but for the concealed pistol that he did not have a permit to carry concealed. It is legal in Virginia to open carry anywhere not prohibited by the land owner. But on your own property, you have to be in your domicile or the curtilage thereof. He was outside the curtilage thereof. So he was arrested for a firearm he never drew.

    If you have time to warn, do and they do not heed the warning to remove themselves from your property is 1 check point. Being aware of what's behind the target should you miss 2nd check point. 3rd objectively should be if you feel your life or other lives are being threatened then you end the threat. God willing it means they surrender before you ever pull the trigger. My question lies with if my home or vehicle, extention of my home, is being robbed am I allowed to defend my personal belongings though my physical life isn't being threatened? I'm sure there's the what the law should be like and what the courts decide to paint as a per case basis which is a gray area with no clear answer. That I don't know.

    Here in America, I’ll admit it, I’m nervous to use my gun in self defense. We’ve seen case after case of people defending themselves but their guns get taken away or they get sued or go to prison for doing the right thing. So I’m like okay…. If I use my gun I’ll go to prison…. Just with how the system and how social media is, id be the bad guy. So it does make me nervous! I’m not afraid to admit that. Call me a wimp or whatever. I’m just like okay what do I do?

    • @ASPextra
      @ASPextra  2 роки тому +2

      I think it's not a bad metric to say that you would only use your firearm in a situation that you're willing to be prosecuted and go to prison for using it. That means the alternative of not using it is so bad that you would rather go to prison...something like you'd be dead, or your spouse would be dead or in the hospital for months or your child is abducted. In those cases, you'll almost certainly not be prosecuted and so it's worth it.
      That said, by far the majority of defensive firearms uses are not prosecuted and are seen as just what they are: defensive use of force. You just hear about the bad outcomes in the media.

These examples they are giving about the 9 year old and the old lady are just bad examples. Anyone with common sense would know those don’t qualify for castle doctrine.
