In thinking though these situations my first thought is "do I want to take a persons life for this?" but 09:00 is a good point on do they value their life less than they value my property. The insurance deductible isn't the issue, if you rely on that logic you might at well go full San Fran and consider that anyone stealing less than your insurance coverage is scott free.

Heres the tipping point on protecting property: when it happens over and over and over and you get your insurance canceled then can’t qualify for new insurance or it doubles. Jake from Snake Farm has canceled me after car theft, home burglary 2x. Also perps now realize no ones going to do anything about it then the car become the garage and then the home. Also we live in fire zone so once there an evacuation the creepers come a snooping and there usually 3-5 of them at a time. What a cucked society we have created. Someone is on your property, messing with things you have sacrificed years of your life to acquire, and the recommended course of action is to hide inside and wait for the state to come rescue you. We deserve everything that is coming our way.

One day, or night, you find a group of people removing parts off of your vehicle and/or vehicles. You let them continue because the law favors them. You call 911, the cops arrive after the fact. You file a report. You make a claim with your insurer. You pay a substantial deductible. Your insurance rate goes up. Sometimes your insurer drops you because the area you reside in is eventually is deemed "high risk", and then you purchase insurance that is much more expensive. The criminals have since continued onto the next several hundred victims. The local law enforcement continue to do nothing. The insurance providers continue to raise every ones rates. And here we have lawyers and self defense "advocates" telling every one to just let them carry on, while you're still SOL. What a way to live.

I had a neighbor that woke up to a man getting undressed in her bedroom around midnight. She grabbed a pistol off her nightstand and woke up her husband before doing anything with it. Turns out it was a very drunk teenager who thought he was at the house next door. Luckily her husband got him home safely.

I agree risking your life for property is very questionable, but I think there's got to be more to it than letting them get away (maybe camera with speaker at least). And the police can endanger themselves investigating a disturbance on my property but I shouldn't? Need some more conversation on this.
That's the job of the police. They are paid to go into dangerous situations. No, I NEVER want to see an officer injured in any way, but they are much better trained to deal with it (in most cases). As was already said, outsource your danger.

A vicious dog tried to mail my child and pets in our fenced in backyard. I went out with a 12 gauge loaded with less lethal rounds. The owner of the dog sent her 10 yr old little girl to retrieve him. No collar, no leach, NOTHING!! The mother then decided to lie about the whole innocent, with 10 witnesses less than 50 feet away and my wife, daughter, and myself also. Yet the DA is just allowing this to go on Lol I’ve demanded a jury trial after they offered me an obscene charge, the reporting parties statements contradict each other as well Lol there’s holes among holes through everything!!! Don’t think the DA will be anybody with a brain haha assume they’ll be incompetent too!! Defending your life and others ALWAYS screws you!! ABSOLUTELY ALWAYS!!! 😢

In Virginia you can't carry concealed on your property outside the curtilage of your home without a permit. If you own 3 acres you can't go out in the woods behind your house with a pistol in your appendix holster legally unless you have a permit. If you open carry on your property in Virginia, Gladys Kravitz next door might very likely call the cops on you eliciting a SWAT style response and perhaps a brandishing charge or reckless endangerment - or worse. I've seen it happen.
It's also worth pointing out that curtilage in some states requires that area to be part of the normal daily use of the property which could change from season to season (the lawn mower shed might not be curtilage in the winter, for example). Once again, as Tim pointed out, "must I" is a much better question than "can I".
What is funny is some baby monitors have a two way function. One planted outside you can hear what is going on inside and hey, reverse the audio ... rack that shotgun ... then say ... what are you doing in my yard ... they dont know where you really are and they probably sit a brick
As someone who has some land fully fenced and gated with livestock on it I do investigate the noises at night. I arm my self and send the dogs out after what is going bump in the night. They always flush out what ever animal it may be. Have not had a 2 legged one run for the fence line yet.... just about every 4 legged kind in N Texas has...

So in all my infinite teenage wisdom said i don't want to wake them up I'll just find an open window lol! So i move some things out of the way. I guess i was louder than i thought i was so half way through the window the light flicked on i look up to him in his underwear and down the barrel of his 1911. After a stern talking to, Needless to say i didn't forget my keys anymore.
Had a guy park in my driveway and go to my backyard and start taking pictures of my house with my 2 kids home. Never went outside to confront him. Watched his every move and kept an eye out for other assailants. Had the kids go up to our safe room. I home carry so I'm ready at a moment's notice and don't need to grab a gun and walk around with it. The guy came back later that night and stopped in front of our house in the middle of the street and was looking in our front window. It was summer time, so it was still light out. My wife called me since I was coming back from walking the dog. The guy took off right as I made it obvious I knew what he was doing. Got his plate and reported it to police.

I don't agree that the criminals should be left alone when stealing your property. It's just a matter of time till they graduate to a more heinous crimes. The same logic John mentions with police encounters and applying a little force early may prevent more tragic outcomes later.
Just consider the risk is all. I think a lot of people assume they are going to win, win by shutout, and come out unscathed. That's possible, but not given.
It's not about believing that I will always win and come out of this or other fights without a scratch. I have to agree that in the short term, not engaging is more beneficial to me and my family. However, we will never know if stopping the perpetrators now, may have prevented them hurting me or someone close to me in the future (near or far) if they graduate to a more sinister crime. I have to admit I don't know what I will do in these situations and hopefully will never need to make that choice.
I work with firearms and the basic citizenry everyday and it is beyond obvious that the majority of people have a fetish for their firearms and have this concerning eagerness inside them to want to use it on another human being no matter the case. I can tell by basic conversation these people do not know the intricacies of the law in regards to use of a firearm, they just want to use it.
I served in the military for 22 years through three wars/conflicts. I hope I NEVER have to use my personal firearms against another human being. However, I will protect my family. Homeowners insurance normally covers personal property theft.

However, we will never know if stopping the perpetrators now, may have prevented them hurting me or someone close to me in the future (near or far) if they graduate to a more sinister crime. I have to admit I don't know what I will do in these situations and hopefully will never need to make that choice.

I work with firearms and the basic citizenry everyday and it is beyond obvious that the majority of people have a fetish for their firearms and have this concerning eagerness inside them to want to use it on another human being no matter the case. I can tell by basic conversation these people do not know the intricacies of the law in regards to use of a firearm, they just want to use it.
Majority? Nah. A few here and there.
I served in the military for 22 years through three wars/conflicts. I hope I NEVER have to use my personal firearms against another human being. However, I will protect my family. Any man who wouldn't is no man at all. I don't have a fetish about using it on other people either. People like that are psychopaths, and that is NOT the majority of people. Your broad brushstroking of the population is laughable and untenable.
When someone breaks intro your home, run. If you can´t run, hide. If you can´t hide, fight.
Nope. If they break into my home, I will protect my wife and my 92-year old dad with every gun I can get my hands on. If they are in my home, they forfeit their right to life if they try to harm me and my family inside the walls of my house. I hope I NEVER find myself in that situation, but I'm not going to run like coward if they come in. Their intention is to clearly steal, kill, and/or destroy, and I'm not having it.
