It’s a sad day. I’m leaving my favorite place, Humboldt County in Norther California. I’d rather stay put, but with the dark winter weather, solar power is too minimal.
The plan today is to take a short drive south as I search for some sun. We will drive through the Avenue of the Giants. Then on to Mendocino County. We will stop at Glass Beach in Fort Bragg before calling it a day.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

You are such a gentle soul. Thank you for walking us through the Giants. They are on my bucket list to go and visit. Praying for many more miles for you and your home. Happy trails precious Scott!
Thanks Cindy
Thank you for the tour of the Avenue of the Giants & glass beach! I probably will not make to that area of the country but your tours make me feel like I am there! You are so kind almost to kind but hope you can continue your road trips so I can see more of your part of the NW! Find some sun & rest! 😊
Your videos are very calming - I find myself just listening to them over and over while I do other things. Thanks!
That’s the best compliment. Thanks Glenn
Hey Scott, I had just seen your video on Point Cabrillo lighthouse and had commented about being drawn to Van life but not loving driving. Now hearing you say you try to not put in more than 15 miles a day of driving is an eye opener and completely new and great idea.
Loved hearing "were not making good time although there's no need to make good time". Great reality check and helps keep you fully in the moment. Being retired I love no longer being enslaved to the illusion of time.
Im so used to seeing Van lifer's doing tons of miles and often going through big cities.
So grateful to find your channel. Thanks 🙏
Ur an amazing human being Scott👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻n indeed giant gentleman….🙏🏻✌🏻👏🏻
Thanks Ursula
Beautiful sunset from a beautiful spot on the coast.
Most stores sell cabbage by the pound and if so and you can find someone working in the produce department, they should be willing to cut it into halves or quarters for you so you don’t have to buy an entire head.
I have lived in Humboldt since 1985! I work at the Co-op in Arcata!!! And seeing you love up on our county is a great thing! If you do come back, let's have a cup of quality coffee!!! Cheers, my friend! You are one humble soul!
The Co-op is one of the best stores anywhere (either location). You do such a great job there! I spend a small fortune at the Co-op and don’t mind one bit. Thank you for keeping a great store going in my favorite place.
Scott: I hate to sound like a broken record. If you’re ‘chasing the sun’, get yourself a DC charger. A 40 amp charger will get you over 100 watts in 15 minutes. That’s more than your panel will get in one afternoon.
A combination of that and your solar will certainly help your situation.
I have both in my PMC, and it works really well.
These chargers are cheap, effective, and relatively easy to install.
Cheers from the Great White (and dark) North.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm definitely going to look into one for both my van and my camper.
@@watertankhikes No problem, glad it was useful to you.
There are a lot of YT videos about these chargers. I have a Renogy 20 amp charger that keeps my AGM battery charged to 100% all the time. I recently installed solar as a backup, because there’s the rare occasion that I’ll be camped for 10 days without starting the engine on my van.
I power:
Lights, fan, 12v fridge, charge my electronics, and even have a 1000watt inverter.
dc charger was my first backup to solar
I hope you find a beautiful place to rest & get some good sunshine, Scott. So glad our temps are a little higher here this week, cause last week sure tested my candle power strategy. We got down below 20 degrees, and icy slush that finally melted today ... yes, there's a whole lot of raindrops in our forecast too. Please stay safe & warm up there 😺💜
I just don't know how you are getting by without a heater. That's very cold!
Ok, so I lived in Eureka from 89-2005. If you recall the wooden carved sign off the beach near Mckinleyville, the sign that says, "where horses have the right of way!',"well my late husband carved that in the 80's before I met him. We have so many memories in Humboldt. I graduated from Humboldt state!
Two of our daughters and their families
Live there, still.
You've made me home sick for both Humboldt and Mendocino 😮. Nothing more beautiful than this redwoods.By the way,bin the 60' vwhen I was growing up in Fort Bragg, Glass beach was amazing. But trash was thrown into the ocean,😢, usually just over the cliffs.
What wonderful memories! Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing the redwoods and ocean with us! I can also sleep for 10+ hours sometimes. 😴
Honestly, I can sleep for ten hours anytime!
Rest well Scott. Thank you for the filming of glass beach, gorgeous!
Thanks Lo
Scott, this video hit the spot for me. Great beach views, forest scenery, and the tacos actually looked like some of the best vanlife cooking I ever did see.
Thanks Nick
I feel you on the pricey snacks. So many things are just not worth the cost anymore.
Thank god for Trader Joe's ~$3 bags of chips cause all the big brands in regular grocery stores start off at double that and only go up.
I would rather learn to make my own potato chips than spend that money frequently as a big time snacker.
Just left the desert after 2 years. It left me with lots of inner peace but the northwest is where my soul yearns to be. Unfortunately my health no longer affords me the luxury of travel, hence I'll continue to hitch a ride on your videos. 😊 Ty.
The beach sunset is stunning. The sound of the waves gives such a tranquil feeling.
It’s snowing here tonight in Scotland. I could almost feel the warmth from the beach sunset ~ looking forward to seeing your new home area 🌞
I like your home on wheels and am looking at the exact model. Can you share you motors isses?
@riverunner9978 these engines are being recalled because of bad engineering
@@StaticCamperVan ….thank you ,it looks like the perfect auto all around.
I was thinking, "Scott could go inland to get some sun," but then I looked at the map to refresh my memory of the area and, oh yeah, lots of mountains before you'd get to the rain shadow, and then you'd end up in, like, Redding. Nah. So southward is the answer alright.
I briefly considered heading to Redding. But not for long
Wish I could sleep even 8 hours of uninterrupted rest. That would be awesome!
Tacos 🌮 sounded delicious annnd as always, safe travels, Thumbs up 👍
Thanks dude
Anytime I'm near an ocean, I'm happy. Today I'm stuck in the Ozarks at -7 degrees and snow. Thanks for transporting me to the coast!
Safe travels and hopefully you can find some sunshine ❤
Thanks Linda. I’m enjoying the change in scenery
Beautiful. Thank you. Sleep🙂
Get some good rest and thank you for taking us on a beautiful drive to Glass Beach. The views were spectacular.
Thanks for watching
Hello. Thanks for showing us the avenue of giants. That was very special. I don’t think there’s anything like the redwood trees in Europe. 😊👍🥰
Lol, i get that some people are into sea glass, and i guess it is kind of cool for artistic uses... But when i think of a beach with glass on it, my first thought goes to cuts on my feet... Go figure, guess im a weirdo... I like your train of thought... With the views, especially the water. Thats my happy thought. I can just look at the water for hours and hours! It gives me peace and serenity.
Ommmmm❤🤗
Sending you warmth and friendship from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Scott 👋
Thanks Jeffrey
Usually the produce dept has small bags of shredded cabbage ….i buy them for when I want to add to 🌮…I am also just one person who eats them and don’t want a whole head of cabbage😊
Lovely Thanks Scott
It is interesting how dependent you and your travel are on sunlight. And the challenge to pull that off.
It’s somewhat by choice. My failing health is eased by being able to cook my own meals. Having a fridge, and solar to power it, helps me have more good health days
You're lucky not to be up in the Seattle area. it's brutally freezing... the desert sounds sooo good right now. Excellent vid Static! Thanks
Yeah it was cold when I left. I’m sorry you have to deal with it
Thanks for the vlog. Beautiful coast. Wish you restful static days to come and a lot of sunshine to load your batteries.
Yea, when i was a kid glass beach was amazing , there were lots of blue , purple , reds etc , now everyone took it, its a shame.
🌌🌄Lovely a way to close out a day of travel and tacos, to view the setting golden sun... 🌄🌌
Reflecting back on a previous video you did from Glass Beach long ago. Fun re-visiting the place vicariously with you today! Really awesome on a 55" TV :))
I wish I was there in the Redwoods! I think its one of the most beautiful places on the face of this earth!
It’s a dreamland
I don't comment often but just wanted to say I find your videos so relaxing. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Thank you Noreen
I just love the filming of the ocean. You film it well with your phone! I. love the ocean too and No Cal is beautiful! Ave of the giants. I have to see now.
Thanks Dallas
A little Cold Weather gives you aRest! Like catch up time to get things in odr, organized for warm weather! Love watching your Adventures,be safe!👍👌🤞✌️🙌🙏🇺🇸🤩
Maybe you need to consider another plan with the weather? It seems that with the short term variable weather patterns it might be impossible to chase the sun. I love Humboldt Co. I thinks for a "winter over" despite the rain etc, it's a good place to be. I don't have any suggestions. Bad weather = more fuel for your home. Unfortunately, going forward, I think that is the way it will be. Aside for the cost of heating etc. if you pencil it out, driving around for more solar might not be the best. If you pencil out a better solar location, given you overage, it might not be worht it. It costs what it costs.
Yes, I believe that I talked through the issues being faced. We have a short winter season here on the coast compared to other places
Another awesome travelogue about the ins outs and what have yous re. living by van. And I have a Ram Promaster City too and I love it. Wish it was not discontinued as a vehicle. Hard to believe, really. It has served you well.
Thank you. I didn’t remember that you have a PMC
Most likely I will never get there because its half way around the world -- but it is so beautiful. Thank you so much for taking me there.
I’ve got a tip for you regarding cabbage. I use unpasteurised sauerkraut. An awesome healthy fermentation food. It will last ages when opened. I put a couple of fork fulls in my tacos and it works really well.
I like sauerkraut but not when I want some fresh cabbage
You got the one pan meals down pat.
Happy New Year Scott best wishes from over the pond in Melbourne Australia.
I would love to visit Australia.
Happy New Year Peter
There are always possibilities.
I love glass beach.
Good luck catching the sun.
I have Been to quartzsite 1 day. 1 day to much! Northern CA and Oregon are nice.
Great video.
Thanks
Enjoy the sun down there, Debbie
Not to nice 12 degree in pnw oregon lol
:) WOW! GO Scott! WELL DONE indeed! LOVE the Beach, rocks, and SUNSET! :) ALL the BEST and hope you get more sun for your panels! Cheers from Frozen State of Seattle ! :)
Hey Marty, thanks
We camp every year in the Ave. of the Giants. Love it up there
We also have glowing stones called yeppers stones .. ☕️just thought I share that 😁🤣
Just follow your heart bro...always watching your videos,,,,SA
I want to hug every red wood! I feel a little torn. Red woods 🌲vs first real snow fall 🌨️in 701 days in my area.
I hope you’re enjoying the snow. Throw a snowball for me, please.
@@StaticCamperVan I will try. I truly enjoy the four seasons but I’m very aware of the global warming problem.
Hello Scott
Hope you find joy in your new location.
Thanks. It’s been great so far
Wishing you could stay where you love. The weather is difficult again this winter in the PNW. Guessing you came in to Ft. Bragg via Leggit? Know there is one other route, a bit easier, but further south. The ocean and the shore are such grand works of natures art. Thank you for sharing, dear fellow.
Yes, I took Route 1 just south of Leggett. The 128 is the easiest route in my opinion. But I don’t mind the 1, it’s only twisty for a short while.
Stay in Humboldt. Willow Creek has a lot of sun
So beautiful. Love the sound of the ocean.
The ocean is being extra beautiful and dramatic lately
Have you considered installing a shoreline plug?
That would provide you with a couple of options, a lot of campsites have electricity and even if you don’t normally pay for parking, in a pinch it would be an option, I know that you are tight on space but even a small generator would keep you topped off.
Just spitballing ideas.
Yes, of course.
Redding and Yuma are two of America's sunniest cities so you are some what close to sunny.
Yuma is farther south than Quartzite and definitely desert.
I hit a few bumps in the road in December ...one being the client I've been caring for the past 6 yrs passed away ..
Once her house sells I'll need to move out..
Maybe back to car camping
Good to ck in with you and see that you are still with us 😢. Mary
Sorry to hear that, Mary. Wishing you all the best
Get warm ... Rest ... I'm understanding your position a bit. Take good care of yourself out there !
- if you're ever in Wisconsin we will treat you very well here and you will be accommodated ✌️ ... any potential van or engine problems, we will rally to help you with that as well... and offer you calm, peaceful confidential places to rest with whatever food you need, 👍👍
Thanks for the kindness Raven
@@StaticCamperVan 🙂✌️
Very interesting Dinner, and cabbage fresh last for along time in fridge,& is high in vitamin c and Fiber!👍👌🤞✌️🙌🙏🇺🇸🤩
Just stay warm, my friend. I'm in a ford e150 super duty van . In Wisconsin. And it's -3. Going down to -10 .my solar panel won't work. Because there's no sun out . For days now . Be safe.
That’s terrible! I’m sorry to tell you, it never gets cold here. I hope you’re staying warm
@@StaticCamperVan thanks my friend
@@StaticCamperVan thanks
The Avenue of the Giants is always worth the extra drive time. We've camped next to that visitor center and walked down to the Eel from there many times. We swim in that river every summer.
Anyway, we'll miss you in Humboldt and hope you can come back home before too terribly long. Praying you find some good sunshine. The view from Glass Beach was gorgeous! 😊
Thanks. I don’t intend to get too far away
Trip to the sun
Leaving the place you felt connected.
Home to homesick.
Moving, when you'd rather be still,
still,
like the giants,
on their trip to the sun.
This area is very similar to Humboldt. Nice scenery, nice people. I’m always happy to be here.
Beautiful scenery shots
Thank you Barbara
Thanks for vlogging, we really appreciate it!! 😃
Been using a RENOGY DC TO DC CHAEGER stand alone unit , nvr had a prblm , no wear on van alternator. Fyi 75% van life lost a my alternator, used my invertor to pwr my battery charger , used it keep my battery charged , had to wait a wk to replace. Crashed at casino one trip lft lights on , noco jump start got me outta that one , safe travels 13 degrees in oregon tonight. 🎉
Thanks stay warm
The waves and sunset at the end of the video were breathtaking. Thank you😊
Hope you find lots of sunshine. Hate to see you leave Humboldt. The last time you left us we had an earthquake. Just an observation 😂. Be safe and come back soon
🐢🐶🐕🐩🌊☔🌞☔☔☔☔🌈☔☔☔🐢
Let’s hope history doesn’t repeat itself.
❤ Good Evening 🌆✨ Scott 🌞 Chasing the 🌞☀️ Well where you are is mostly Sunny,so you don't have to drive to far,& stay in warm Weather! Here in Ny. We're having cold 25 degrees weather & Snow tomarrow only Couple inches so im not worried! In couple weeks Spring will be here!👍👌🤞✌️🙌🙏🇺🇸🤩
Our weather is very similar to NY. We will have lots of clouds and rain for the next few months. It is much warmer here though
Thats a Great Snack with Tortilla wraps, like 🍕
Please don’t use tortillas to make pizza. I’m begging you
Sweet dreams 🙋🏼♀️
Wow what a beautiful spot! Thanks for filming that for us. The redwoods are absolutely spectacular. I hope the scenery and (hopefully!) better weather has made up for the move away from Humboldt, for the time being. Hoping for some sun for you! 🌞😎🌻 Oh...edited to add 100% understand the car sickie feeling...I get it too. I found the best thing is to do the same...stop, eat & drink a little, walk around and try to get rid of the feeling otherwise it stays all day 🤢
I love woods. Looks so relaxing.
Another fine video. Good luck with your van and power situation.
Thanks Roger
Wow! I didn’t realize how big that log was until you actually walked through it!! 🌲
Those redwoods are Giant
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL ⭐️ !!!
Thank you so much for taking us here 😎👍
The alternator charging doesn't have to be complicated. You could simply run a beefy cable to a switch and to the house battery. The switch can be a flick of the hand style. Think BlueSeas systems type. Beefy cable because of the length of the wire run. Once you stop simply disconnect the line to the alternator with the switch. Yes, there is a little more to it, but you should get the idea and push in the right direction. It can be a STATIC setup.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think you might have missed part of my explanation
@@StaticCamperVan No, I saw/heard all of it. That's why I left the follow-up comment below it. I'd share a link or two... BUT I know how you are about those also.🤣🤣🤣🤣
@MrWeeble19 what follow up comment? I didn’t see it
@StaticCamperVan That's weird. Yeah, WHERE is my other comment?🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Very pretty scenery. Glass beach is gorgeous. Your tacos looked really good. 😊
Thanks Pam
God bless you Static !
Thank you for taking us along, really enjoy your videos and your calmness
Thank you, love your videos.
Geez & I thought Fl was bad this year w rain
. I also stress about my solar
Love your posts
From what I’ve read, we haven’t had any unusual rain amounts yet. We have experienced some flooding problems due to timber cutting though
Thanks Scott! Glass beach looks exciting!❤
Sweet dreams🌟
Have nice rest Scott 😊 lovely video x
🦋
We've had clear blue skys in Seattle area for a few day but cold.Today it warmed up.Gorgeous day though.
Thank you Scott with the tour. Great content. Hope Mother Nature cooperates in providing sun. Best of Luck!🍀
Thank you so much for this video. Really beautiful and interesting.
❤Wow Beautiful Beach, looks like a Rainbow in the water in a Circle! Awesome 👍👌🤞✌️🙌🙏🇺🇸🤩
Oh🎉😮 La Vista Final era estupendo
Hello scott I'm glad you made it to your destination without any car issues I worry about you driving over when you're traveling that far. Hope your sleep was in a peaceful area
i take my son out there to play basketball at bear river. love the view out there. i was there for the weekend. if u decide to drive up to oregan, avoid it. i was stuck 8 hours yesterday on I5 near cottage grove, or. major snow and ice storm. another bad ice storm i heard coming aaround oregan tomorrow. ave of the giants one of my favorite place to drive and ease my mind.
Oh that’s tough. Sorry to hear that. I never take the 5 anymore regardless of weather
Beautiful scenery ❤
Thanks Gloria
Ahhhhhh yes I love the smell of the redwoods!!!
that camera really captures the beautiful imagery!✌
This is so amusing to me. I enjoy Humboldt but its not my fav… but the Mendocino Coast?! Yeah, that’s my jam. Unfortunately I’m stuck in my van in Bismarck North Dakota at the moment. While you’re looking for sun I’m hoping that it gets up near 0°. -26° last night. I am missing the west so much. I’ll be back soon.
Mendo is my second favorite place to be.
Goodness, I hope you are staying warm!
Thank you for a beautiful trip. Please take care, I enjoy your company be safe ❤ 😊
Thanks Leona
I really enjoyed this video! The redwoods, tacos and sunset were magnificent.
Thanks Millie
It's -4 tonight in the midwest. Stay warm.
Just love your vids! Goodnight!
