Don't use ebay Head Gaskets!

- Perhaps it's obvious not to cheap out on a part as important as a head gasket. But you'd think these aftermarket parts manufacturers could put 3 pieces of metal together but perhaps not.

Ebay sells all types and brands of gaskets. They also sell Felpro and Mahle. It's just an online store, "Don't buy knockoffs on Ebay" should be the title to your video.
Title should be don’t fit a head gasket if you don’t no nothing about tolerances . Fit the cheap eBay multi layer to race cars to get more compression over the thick brand names are for warped blocks in my view
Head warped wasnt too bad LOL
Exactly it wasn't the gasket it was the head . Half ass job
Buy a machinists straight edge, not an expensive one
Problem 1.) You used cooper spray which you're not supposed to use that's called backyard mechanics and you do on "your" own risk. 2.) When using a metal gasket both surfaces are supposed to be flat, you stated it wasn't (not in those exact words.) I hope you also changed out the head bolts too as well. 3.) As another commenter stated ebay is not a brand that produces their own parts.
You dont have to change your head bolts thats a myth just dont strip them when you take them off other than that you are correct he didnt resurface the head or the block but mostly the head also did he torque it to spec and the pattern
You should always get the cylinderhead milled specially if the engine was overheating and/or burning coolant. Even if ur engine wasn't overheating according to ur temp gauge the area where the head gasket was leaking generally the compression ring to coolant jacket was getting very hot causing that area to warp. People that don't do engine work on a daily bassis don't understand that just overheating once is all it takes and it doesn't need to even get really hot and that head can be twisted like a pretzel. Some heads like subarus usually dont even warp much even when they get super hot then some engines don't take much at all and some will be warped even if they never were overheated. The deck surpace of the block could have imperfections too so its best to mill the head to ensure you have the best chance of no leaks. To top it all off its not expensive to get a head milled ur talking 60-120 bucks.
on a HONDA only USE OE HONDA head gaskets. Ask any reputable machine shop and they will tell you to use OE HONDA only. usually only $40-100 from the dealer.
Was the bad gasket outta that yellow and black "Evergreen Automotive" box in the background of the video by any chance?
I've gone through 2 of those Evergreen eBay head gaskets on my 22RE and I cant get them to seal. At all. They look significantly different from the OEM gaskets and blow out immediately. As in they leak worse than the damaged OEM gasket ever did. Massive misfires throughout entire rev range. Oil and coolant BOTH emulsify within 10 minutes of first start
Do. Not. Use "Evergreen". Ever
I had similar experience with a mls ebay gasket on a 2g eclipse. I had head and block machined and was flat.
Is MLS head Gasket still in?
You may not be a seasoned mechanic but you should do some research before doing a big job like this. The mating surface do need to be perfectly flat especially when you are using a metal gasket. Heads studs is a must change whenever you install a new head gasket. I do admit I am no mechanic but i suggest doing a bunch a research doing any mechanical job. This will save you time and money.
I used to have a Honda with a D15B7 in it. Head gasket blew, and I was broke. Went ahead and ordered up one of those cheap kits. Worked out fine for me. Of course, quality control probably isn't a big thing with these cheap kits, so I was lucky. I probably wouldn't do it again, now that I'm not as broke as I used to be (and I don't own a Honda anymore). lol
Also, the head gasket I used wasn't metal. It was cheap composite.
Yeah the quality control I guess is what gets you. A few seem to be good, most are bad. I have tried the cheaper composite one and that one actually lasted longer than these cheap chinese MLS ones.
ebay has nothing to do with the crappy item YOU CHOSE!
I bought a head set from car parts wiz on eBay . I had to replace the valves in #6 few months later #8. Ever since I put the new head gasket on (both times ) it's blowing smoke out the exhaust on start up. Even in the afternoon in hot temps. Starting to run bad now , no water in the oil though , guess I'll be taking off the head again.
it may be something else, did you resurface and torque the bolts ?
It wasn't that bad you should have got the head machine every time I don't believe it was the gasket I believe it was the wrench Turner
1- purchase MLS eBay headgasket
2- ARP or new OEM head studs
3-resurface head and pressure check for cracks and leaks
4-install and correct torque spec and timing and bam!!! You’re good to go!!
eBay never fail on me and copper spray does work you probably just slapped it on and autozone head gasket is like ebay
Perhaps. Perhaps no name head gaskets are alright if both surfaces are straight and true. I feel like OEM and felpro gaskets are a lot more forgiving with imperfections
Pros and cons of copper spray: if you think the head and block decks have tiny scratches even after decking them, then use copper spray. HOWEVER, if this is not the case, I would personally not use it; it will add a very, very small layer of soft material on your gasket. This layer will not hold up as well as the metal gasket, and will wear or squish out over time. This will lessen the clamping power of the head bolts, as the torque rating will change. It’s like holding a burger and then the patty falls out; if you don’t grip it more, the whole burger falls out of your hands.
When pulling the head you need too pull the bolts in the order that the product provider suggests it warns in the manual that not following the process will result in the head warping it’s the same when torquing the head back down
That is best practice, but since this vid I've probably done 2 dozen civic head gasket jobs and they're actually really forgiving. I've just impact gunned the bolts out, reused head bolts, didn't machine the head or block deck, and it's all worked.
In my experience the key is using a good quality head gasket like OEM or Felpro. It seems the no name brands you find on ebay have a really poor coating which doesn't seal for very long.
I think you didn't prep it well
@ctrlaltdefeattv did the felpro gasket hold up?
I put a eBay oem Honda gasket on my d16 recently for a vtec head swap, and it is pushing out the reservoir too.. it’s is a brand new head too, went through by the machine shop all refreshed head. I guess ima just re do it and use felpro! I was gonna use that copper spay, but after watching this I’m not..
In my opinion, Felpro is on par, or perhaps even better, than OEM head gaskets. I've put a few felpro head gaskets in a few hondas and put several thousand miles on them and felt confident that they'd hold for the foreseeable future.
I'm actually even putting Felpro gaskets on my 6.0 powerstroke instead of OEM's because I believe they're a bit better in this case.
every Honda engine I build I deck the block and resurface the head This is the only way I have found to get the head gasket to hold when using a MLS head gasket
If you have any warping it's bad. It needs to be machined flat and into spec before you go off to install anything.
Sounds more like dropped liners that gasket won’t last
next time try anealing the gasket
Don’t buy from Mizumo auto parts on eBay.I ordered King bearings for my Honda and instead they sent me some knock off China crap. The King bearings have a “K” stamped on the bearings so you can tell they’re king bearings...
Thanks for heads up. 1995 honda odyssey 300,000 miles timing belt failure. Pulled head bent valves doing all
Well that's your problem .. do t use copper spray. Copper spray is for reusing gaskets..
ive been a tech for 20 years and copper spray is the shit
you can buy 4 head gasket and all will be the same with a made up brand
What brand was the ebay seller??
I'm not sure, but I'd just stick with an OEM headgasket since it's a bit of a job to replace it. More so on a V6 or V8 engine
you probably didn't torque down the first time.
Keyboard wizard vs snap on tool box .. round one fight
“Don’t use eBay gaskets if you don’t know what you’re doing”
@BrickyBoi both are true.
Was it a dubble layerd metal
Use graphite.. if you lazy .. like you did not clean up Nathan .. this just ruined my whole day now thanks hey
Did you use copper spray on the head gasket that`s on now?
No, the only head gaskets I use now are OEM head gaskets with no coating
CtrlAltDefeatTV was the felpro a good one? Or equivalent to one headgasket?
@@cooldude2245 Felpro gaskets have always been good to me, I don't think I've had a failure with felpro or OEM before
Well iv never seen the words (use Copper sprays ) on any reassembly spec for any motor.
Possibly on a 2 stroke or marine
Same here 😩😩😩
I agree 100% I have an ls vtec and i used a cheap chinese head gasket on it and it pushed coolant out of the overflow right away. I also had the head decked at a local machine shop at that same time. I replaced the cheap head gasket with a fel-pro and have been driving it around for several months with no issues at all. It actually looks like the china head gasket was getting rusty. Which i have never seen a rusty head gasket before. Just very poor quality materials used
Was the head gaskets by dnj?
It very possibly might have been. But I don't remember 100%
If this was me I’d pull this. This was completely user error. So many things done wrong. Don’t blame the tools when it’s your fuck up. Just admit you blew it and learn from your mistake.
I've come to my own conclusion and you can come to yours. But for the record, anytime I've used an OEM head gasket it's sealed perfectly. Every time I've used a no name brand, it's blown within a few hundred miles.
On this particular one I redid it with a new OEM gasket and it sealed perfectly.
Could a no name brand work with a perfectly machined block and head? Perhaps, but it's a beater civic and that was more work than I wanted to put into it.
Is the new head gasket still holding?
Yeah, with Honda just go with an OEM head gasket. On a D series engine they're only about 42 bucks
He can't remember what to call the intake or exhaust gaskets, also used copper spray on the first gasket likely causing the issue. Obviously doesn't know much given that he's just another Honda civic racecar builder in his mom's garage. I'm fairly certain ebay is not a brand nor do they manufacture engine gaskets. Check your seller and check the brand. Do not listen to someone who thinks every gasket from one site is the same.
Honda race cars are a joke. Buy a Chevy. Like a rock.
But I still own a civic. 34mpg!! Wooo
Lol
Dude, u trusted an eBay head gasket. Lol
