- An outdoor barbecue turns into a forum for uncomfortable debate in this scene from “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” The film, which chronicles the rise and fall of the televangelist couple Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, stars Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain in the lead roles.
This sequence, which occurs as Jim and Tammy Faye are becoming more popular on the Christian Broadcasting Network, involves a gathering thrown by that network’s head, Pat Robertson (Gabriel Olds). Jim is at a table with Robertson and other leaders in the televangelism world, including Jimmy Swaggart (Jay Huguley) and Jerry Falwell (Vincent D’Onofrio).
Tammy Faye is initially seated at another table with the wives, but decides the conversation seems more interesting at the men’s table and makes her way over, with not much subtlety, to join them.
“I wanted to show the extent to which Tammy is trying to operate and be seen and heard in a man’s world,” Michael Showalter said.
He did that with audio cues along with visual ones. When Tammy Faye drags a seat over to the table, the chair scraping across the floor is so loud, people stop to look. “We amplified the sound of the napkin on her lap and the silverware,” Showalter said. “Everything that she’s doing is disrupting this kind of insular boys’ club thing that they’re all having with each other.”
The intention was to show how disruptive Tammy Faye’s behavior seemed to people, but to also shine a light on a person who was always breaking the norms. A discussion between Falwell and Tammy Faye involves his view about the need to fight against “the liberal agenda, feminist agenda, homosexual agenda.” Tammy Faye disagrees.
“I love our country,” she replies, “but America is for them, too.”
“The central conflict that is ignited in this scene between her and Jerry Falwell ends up being the central theme of Tammy Faye’s arc throughout the entire film,” Showalter said.

I had the pleasure of serving Tammy Faye in the 80s while I was managing a boutique in Nashville. She was much more petite than my impression of her on TV but she was just as “larger than life” in person. She was surrounded by an entourage but down to earth. Besides her star-shaped purple lashes, the most memorable thing was her digging through the clearance bins to buy a bunch of cheap belts. Haha!

Showalter is a GREAT director. Shame he didn't get an Oscar nod but as a person who has watched and adored him since I was but a wee middle schooler and I discovered "The State", I commend him for how talented he is, both on and off the screen. I loved this movie.

I remember Tammy Faye being worse publicly. The movie makes her image much better than reality to me. She was detestable and now much nicer.

This movie seems to throw some light (and a lot of shade ...) on some type of "christian" people. Until this clip I wasn't even aware this film existed. I looked up the film (not much Info yet), the documentary (very little info) and finally the person (a lot of info) on Wikipedia. She's certainly interesting. She seems to have been part of this disgusting group around televangelism. Yet she seems also to have gone her own way and in all the craziness and bad she seems to have done some good, too.
So instead of Elisabeth II 25th version or Marie Antoinette number 110 - why not a movie about this woman?
Anyway I would watch almost anything with Jessica Chastain and this glimpse of a tiny part of US life/ history/ society is fascinating for me as an agnostic progressive green continental European.
It's obvious that the movie isn't going to be a block buster.. The Movie more then likely will end up on DVD, TV, Streaming real quick..
I think I will find it interesting consider it will give insight into her life and the inner workings of a Bible Thumping..
I am not going to waste money on it though..
