David, Thanks for all your content. I have learned a great deal from you & come to see you a home brew mentor.
Thanks from your biggest fan in Polo, Missouri USA
Great to hear, much appreciated 🍻🍻
Arrived in the mailed yesterday…eager to try! Thanks for the video
Cheers Sam. Enjoy 🍻🍻🍻
Just bought one yesterday, nice to see it works so well. Great video again David!
+Bill Snow I am sure you will be very happy with it :)
A word of warning for the use of this. I recently got this paddle and tried it for the first time on my latest brew. My drill is an older style Bosch electric chord drill (not battery operated). My drill has a single fast speed. What happened was the action was way too aggressive and lots of boiling hot wort splashed everywhere. Luckily not on me. The situation could have been much worse. Everyone take care. Use a drill with multiple speeds and set to low speed first or as David suggested do a trial with your full grainfather and water and your drill first - I should have done that. Also it did knock off my filter....tragic day brewing this was......
Good advice for sure :)
Excellent timing as I've just got one a couple of days ago and will be brewing with it tomorrow! Your videos are excellent David. 👍🏼
+Gill & Roger Kille Great, thanks Roger , I am sure you will love it. Just be sure to do a test run in water to avoid filter issues. Its important to understand where to put it.
Hi David very good video mate and a very handy tool to have in your brewing tool box , thanks Ivan
+MultiChef888 Thanks alot Ivan, totally agree.
Another excellent video David, extremely useful info for a newbie GF brewer like myself and many others...many thanks for your content...
Thank you Gary, that is very good to hear :)
WOW! That looked realy effective. Definetly getting one.
One thing that could be intetesting to do is a test with both this and compare it to a "paint mixer". I see people wanting to save a few quids buying a paint mixer, but I suspect the GF one to be a bit more efficient. Also from the perforated plates allowing flow through paddle, and by this, probably getting more air into the wort.
+Kim Rune Einvik Sure is. The problem is a stainless steel paint mixer is generally going to be the same cost at best. Many are painted, which are not suitable.
As always, great video David! I will be adding this to my wish list soon!
Great, thank you. Glad you liked it :)
New toys! Oh man i can just see myself using both!
+Sebastiaan Riga Haha exactly! When these arrived my wife said "The boy got two new toys".
Great looking product. I will try to find one very soon.....Take care, Bluefin.
Great :)
Thanks, David!
🍻🍻🍻Much appreciated 🍻🍻🍻
I love when tools can several things: will be using this for aeration, and for stirring soy milk while it boils.
Exactly the same for me :) Extra value is great!
Just got it from imake last week. Look forward to test this . Great vid David
+Even Skaaren-Fystro Glad you liked it Even :) Have fun with the paddle!
Another great video David.
Can you tell me how this works when I have the Grainfather with the centre pipe?
Haven’t done my first brew yet. Many thanks!
Yes it works fine, just avoid the pipe and grainbasket sides when moving it around. The edges can be sharp.
I wonder if it would be possible to whirlpool like the commercial breweries do with the grainfather. Meaning, could you run the pump and use the recirculating arm and run the wort back into the beer at an angle to get the whirlpool? Perhaps an experiment for a future video?
Thanks. I have tried a three pump set up and it works ok but the size of the system provides limitation
Great video! I ferment in Carboys, would I whirlpool right before I
transfer into the fermenter?
Thank you and yes 🍻🍻🍻
Thank you for all the great videos you add, David! Just a few questions from a rookie brewer regarding the use of the paddle. I am using a false bottom in my G30, I see from your comments that you no longer use the paddle for whirlpooling when doing that? But you still use it for aeration? Then I have a small question regarding yeast. I have so far used rehydrated dry yeast for my brews, would you add that after aerating the wort? Or before?
Hi Lars, these days I have gone back to splashing my wort into my fermenters mostly. If you wish to use this paddle then for sure use it before adding your yeast. I hope this helps 🍻
Hi David - dumb question - do you first use this at end of mash in, or end of boil? Thanks.
Not at all. Its for the end of the boil 🍻🍻
David,
We have the False Bottom in our GF.
Am I correct in understanding that if we have the false bottom, whirlpooling after the boil is not a good idea?
I would thing it would just take all the trub on the bottom and mix it up in the Wort?
Let us know.
Thanks,
Hi Fred :) I did quite a lot of testing and in the end ive stopped WP when I have a false bottom. The evidence was clear that it had no further value. Hope this helps :)
How long do you whirlpool for. And do you do it at 100 degrees. Or chill and sanitise cooler using hot wort. Then whirlpool ie 90 degrees thanks
There are various options around temperature but usually 80-85C. The actual wp with a drill can be a mere 1-5 minutes.
Hi David,
Do you still use this paddle as of today? And if you use it, would you still recommend using a hop filter to avoid clogging the pump? That's what I use and I whirlpool manually. I don't have a false bottom. (I have a GF system).
Hi, actually no because almost all my systems use false bottoms. I also just splash in my wort into the fermenter and this is enough for sachet dry yeast.
Hi David. I'm hoping to use my new Grainfather whirlpool and aeration paddle during a brew next week. It was difficult to tell from the video, and I'm just wondering if you had any opinion on how far into the wort you need to dip the paddle, a) for whirlpooling, and b) aerating to get the best results?
Great video, as always.
Martin
Thanks Martin :) For the whirlpool I suggest just having the head in. For aeration I go deeper.
Hi.David,great video again.
I`ve a GF and the paddle but haven`t used the paddle yet.Does whirlpooling help in stopping the hops clogging the filter?
Darren Mr It will even things out yes. Though I would really recommend a false bottom like I show in this video for a better solution:- GRAINFATHER UPGRADE: FALSE BOTTOM 4K HD ua-cam.com/video/dwUptHvFK78/v-deo.html
Hello.
I have done two brews on my GF with the padde, but i dont get the whirlpool right. I use my drill with power cord that is powerful and high RPM even on the lowest setting. I have to push in the power just a little and let it go all the time. And dont get an even swirl. Do you think that the RPM is the problem here? And should I buy a cheep battery drill with lower power and RPM. How much RPM do you whirlpool with. Thanks again for all the videos on the GF. Lots of tips and help for us new on the system :)
Hmm I think you need to lower the rpm then. I use a cordless drill with various settings but never fully hold the trigger down.
Hi again, dear David. Little help needed. In case of hop-stand, when do you start your wp? How long does it last? Thanks. I am new to wp, so I need to understand how to manage it. Thanks again for your patience..... Giancarlo
Hi :) No problem. I start the wp directly after turning off the heat and adding the wp hops. With a paddle such as this 5 minutes should be plenty of time. I hope this helps :)
Did you stir anything after adding the yeast? Do you suggest doing it if im addin dry yeast?
Thanks for the great video.
I would suggest not stirring, it has been found to negatively impact yeast health and cell count.
Hi. Great video. I have a question. When you whirlpool inside the grainfather do you let stand until the whirpol is finished? DO you afterwards use the pump and the chiller?
Thank you Viz :) After 5 mins of drill action you can remove it. Do your hop stand, which is usually 10-15 mins and then you move to the cooling stage with pump and chiller. I hope this helps :)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew hi david. When whirlpool and hopstand, do I need to turn on my brewzilla 500W element to maintain temperature? Thank you
Yes, if you need to do that to maintain temperate.
David, I was curious if you still intend to use your tied up tubing drip technique (for aerating the wort going into the fermentor) in addition to using this new aeration paddle. Or is that method a thing of the past?
+Kevin Dillon I will use both, double impact :)
Hey David,
i used to aerate it for like 5 minutes at full speed, so there is a very thick foamy layer on the wort. Is there too much oxygen in the wort, that could lead to errors or off-flvours? Has it any negative impact on the yeast?
Looking forward hearing from you!
Greetz ,Jay
Hi Jay, No that is perfectly fine :)
Great info, thinking of getting one cause I hate shaking fermenters to oxygenate wort. Could you whirlpool with a hop spider in the GF?
Thanks. Yes, as long as you are careful.
Are you worried about Hot Side Aeration? That was my only concern with seeing it in the late addition whirlpool. I know there is a a lot debate about HSA.
Small (ish) world, just heard you on Experimental Brewing not an hour ago!
Not in the slightest! That old idea was buried a long time ago! Ive been whirlpooling for almost 30 years without any adverse effects.
Yeah I'm with you.. I have never known anyone that has told me about having the issue.. Neat device! Looks well made. Cheers David! 🍻
+Short Circuited Brewers me neither! Yes its a nice product for sure. I can see it being popular :)
HAHA that was fun doing that episode with those 2 guys!
I tried this whirlpool paddle with the robobrew false bottom this morning, with the tornado at the center, the false bottom filter kept jacking up in the GF. is your fixed tight?
I have guides on my channel on how to do this, having said that a whirlpool is not really needed with a false bottom.
Would you reccomend the grainfather for a new brewer? I'm looking for a simpleish brewer but quality.
+asambi69 Yes totally. The GF is really the easiest system to use. Check out my review here ua-cam.com/video/QWyLOuCzpoc/v-deo.html
Thanks David, great review. Only 1 question, is there a reason you whirl anti clockwise ?
+FishingBrad Thanks. No, either way will do the same thing :)
The US and UK do counter clockwise. South Africa, Australia and New Zealand do clockwise , otherwise you are working against the Earths rotation. Its just energy saving really.
Hop spider make useless the hop whirpool? I mean there is no point in do hop whirpool if your are using hop spider, correct?
The main point of the whirlpool is to separate wort from trub. Trub contains all sorts of waste, not just hops. Even with a hop spider you will still get some hop matter in your wort. Hope this helps :)
Hi David. By any chance are you aware of a retailer in the US that sells this? I tried the usual suspects; Amazon, Northern Brewer, etc., as well as a Google search but couldn't find any place. Closest I could find was a firm in Ontario that, as one might expect, had a shipping charge equal to almost twice the cost of the paddle itself. Makes it fairly unattractive at such an overall cost. Closest product akin to this was a Jaybird Stainless Steel Paddle. Any experience with that? It looks like it attaches to a drill so this might be the only realistic option here in the states.
You can buy it direct from GF on their website for the US.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Well now don't I feel like an idiot!! DUH! I had always gone to the NZ grandfather site and never noticed the little 'Region' dropdown in the top-left corner. And I was so proud I had done my due diligence before even asking the question. :(
No worries at all Michael, many do the same, hence why I mentioned it :)
Hi Interesting video, would you be so kind to tell me how aerating the wort optimises yeast health?
Sure. Oxygen is essential for yeast growth and reproduction. Yeast must grow and reproduce first, before actually fermenting the wort to make beer. Yeast needs oxygen to synthesize the material for expanding cell walls; namely sterols and fatty acids. Overlooking proper wort aeration can lead to problems such as long lag times before the start of fermentation, stuck or incomplete fermentation, or excessive ester (fruit flavor) production, any of which would produce less than desired results
you know, your the 1st person who didn't say, yeast will die without oxygen. which as i'm sure you know is quite amusing as yeast need an anaerobic environment to produce alcohol and both divide and thrive without air or all brews would stop after 14 days.
Yeast is a tougher beast than many people realise :)
Hi David, just a quick question, we've been experimenting by chilling wort to 80 degrees then doing hop additions and then whirlpooling at this temp. Would this aeriate the wort enough at this stage just by whirlpooling? or would you recommend whirlpooling to aeriate in the fermenter as well? Thanks
+Phillasophical Its possible but I wont be as fast as using a chiller. My advice would be to make hop tea instead. Far less hassle and a better result. I have a video covering it on this channel.
Hey thanks for your reply, my questions was more to do with aeriating the wort before pitching yeast, as in would whirl pooling at 80 degrees celsius aeriate it enough without needing to aeriate in the fermenter?
+Phillasophical Oh sorry I see. I would do both still. The more the better :)
Hi David, Going to be using this first time tomorrow, I can only do it within grainfather as I have all rounder for fermentation so dont want to damage it. How long do you think is sufficient?
Hi Anton, 5 minutes is enough with a drill for a wp I believe. I think it would probably fit in an allrounder, just keep it in the middle and that would work.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks as always for super quick reply. will give it a go!
Great :)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew can report to say it fits well and was pretty easy to do. is intention to make whirlpool to almost see the bottom thus pushing air into the wort?
@@ToXXeRR Yes, when using in the fermenter it is designed to add oxygen :)
Hi! It's possible to degass wine with this paddle?
Sure. I have :)
If you didn't clamp your filter onto the output my guess is it would be ripped right off. Managed to do it by hand once so think this thing would send it to the moon.
+HappyDeux Its a case of knowing where the limits are. Test it in water first.
Getting ready to pick up my grainfather from my local shop. I like watching your videos they are very informative. Wondered if you have any promo codes for grainfather I am getting some accessories. Thanks 🍻
Great. No, sadly I dont have promo codes. These things sell like hot cakes, I guess they dont need them. You will find seasonal deals though.
David Heath wondered if you had any good chocolate oatmeal stout recipe you would recommend
Try the breakfast stout here:- ua-cam.com/video/eL26FWeh9Sc/v-deo.html
Two videos in one day!? What is this? Christmas? :)
+Aequitas Haha could be :)
WAIT... July is over!
Could you use this for wine as well? When you try to get the CO2 out of it?
+Sean D Totally. Its ideal for wine degassing.
My question is this. How does this compare to injecting straight oxygen? Am I doing the yeast justice by just adding 02 with this product or should I be going right to an 02 bottle
If you already have a pure oxygen set up then carry on. If not then this will do the job well enough and cheaper.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew I have neither at the moment. Leaning towards this because I like IPA's and it's cheaper haha. Last question I half batch. Do you think the paddles are low enough to fully submerge in 2.5 gallons of wort in a 5 gallon bucket?
I mostly brew small batches, No problem using the paddle this way. I just submerge the head no matter what the volume is.
Last, last question. How do I convince my wife to let me buy this? 🤫
Haha, I am sure you know which buttons to press :)
How long should I do my Whirpool? How long too before the yeast?
Jérôme Bossé I whirlpool for up to 5 mins with the drill paddle (let it settle for 10-15 mins after) and aerate with the same cleaned and sanitized paddle for 5 mins or more. Works well for clarity and fast fermentation start :)
and what about a hopstand, I am not sure whats the difference with whirpool? and in the recipe tool for the grainfather on the step for hops? I get confuse all the time between both for the hops addition?
The hop stand is after the whirlpool :) You just leave it before cooling and transfer.
David Heath so whirpool hoping and hopstand hoping are different techniques if I understood? What would be the difference? Thanks David 🙂
Does what it says on the box?? Don't get that too often....:-) Thanks David.
+Peter Scandlyn Very true Peter sadly. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great videos on your site. I just ordered one. How long do you think is necessary to whirlpool with this?
+Carlos de Castro Thanks Carlos. I would suggest 1 minute. Worked for me :)
And how long time would you recommend for aeration?
I go with the amount of hops. From 2mins to 5 is enough. Then let is stand for up to 15 mins.
I know it's unlikely but would like to see the dissolved oxyegen increase (or not) from using this paddle. I use it and think it is excellent.
Me also :) I do not have the sort of equipment for measuring this though.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew My brother is doing chemistry at uni as well as winemaking. I'll see if he has access. If so, will report back with a before and after aeration with the paddle with a few different variables such as time aerated for and how vigorous I do it.
Awesome! I would love to hear those results :)
Does anyone find that liquid gets inside the hollow rod? Seems to for me. Concerns me a bit from a hygiene perspective.
As long as you clean it then it really is no issue. I just add mine to a pbw mix for an hour or so then rinse and sanitise. Ive never had an infection ever.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks David. Do you pull the plug out of the end when you do this to make sure that it drains properly?
I mostly do yes , I seldom find anything in there though but I think its good practise to be sure.
R u sure you are adding oxygen or in fact degassing
Good question! I would suggest contacting GF for a technical reply.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew ok so it depends on the gas and solubility. Paddling will increase oxygen levels and decrease carbon dioxide. If they are both available
Yes, I have some knowledge around this but I am careful to only comment on what I know I can be 100% sure of.
Using this for the whirpool is of course marketing bs (hot side aeration + only a light spin is required)
Not really no. A light spin will mean manually wping for much longer.
You should also realise that HSA is known to be a very limited factor in small batch homebrew.
