Food data central provides the calories of most foods you add into the bowl, you'll just need to search the item, know how much of that item you're feeding, and then do the math from there. How much iodine is present in an average chicken neck? Is it possible to provide adequate iodine with an appropriate amount of neck or trachea that has the thyroid gland present? I know it is possible to cause hypothyroidism from over feeding neck or trachea. Is it possible that AAFCO and the NRC have over calculated the iodine requirements for cats? They are so prone to hyperthyroidism. My sister’s cat has it (on a commercial kibble and canned diet).

Would be really nice if you can confirm my suspicion
The fear behind iodine overdose has been blown out of proportion.
I came across some studies: "In a 12-month study in dogs, doses of 30, 37.5, and 45 mg/kg body weight caused no overt signs of toxicity"
Even the strongest kelp powder has around 14mg iodine per gram (although the reality is closer to 0.10%, so 1000mcg max). Most dogs will be fine if you don't exceed ½ to 1 tsp of kelp a day.
I'm a bit frustrated, as I was too worried about adding too much kelp to my dog's diet. I added 4g/week, but I'd not care if he didn't eat it. He came as hypothyroid...

As opposed to supplementing with kelp or iodine drops? I’ve found a few pet stores around me carry large bags of chicken necks for pretty cheap and I buy a lot of head attached poultry, I worry that if I feed necks and supplement we’d over supply iodine

@@thehat222 I've seen posts about raw feeders that feed too much trachea/necks even as treats causing hyperthyroidism on their pets (they likely supplement iodine on top of that though!) . Sigh. I really would love to feed my dogs completely raw but honestly your videos make me see how unrealistic it is in the location I live. Not saying they are bad! They’re quite informative. I just can’t keep up / don’t have the means or money necessary to feed a completely raw balanced diet. I’ll just add some meats and greens to their kibble but I hate giving it to them and I know they hate it too.

I actually found a raw diet kibble! The brand name is nature’s variety instinct the raw brand and it’s a pure raw diet kibble with no extra ingredients! And they have it for dogs and cats!
(Beef version) The ingredients for dogs are: beef, beef liver, pumpkin seeds, beef spleen, carrots, apples, butternut squash, ground flaxseed, dried kelp, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, salmon oil, rosemary extract, blueberries, and dried chicory root. The use monomorillonite clay for shape, mixed tocopherols as a preservative, and freeze dry it.
(Rabbit version)For cats the ingredients are: rabbit (including ground rabbit bone), pork, pork liver, pumpkin seeds, carrots, apples, butternut squash, rabbit liver, rabbit kidney, rabbit lung, dried kelp, broccoli, apple cider vinegar, salmon oil, rosemary extract, blueberries, and dried chicory root. The use monomorillonite clay for shape, mixed tocopherols as a preservative, and freeze dry it.
And they have plenty of flavors too like beef, rabbit, pork, fish, etc…
The point is I think you should definitely try this new stuff because it is amazing!
The price for a small bag is about 15 dollars and the price for a large bag is about 30 dollars. .

I know this is an old video but I have an Iodine question. I purchased, and have been using for a year, your spreadsheet dog meal formulator, and I really like it, it has made me confident that I'm giving my dog a balanced diet and I appreciate your hard work to help us raw feeders!! I needed to add iodine to her diet as it is low, and the life flo iodine is already on the drop down bar to add to my meal planning, so I purchased some and have just started using it, per my dogs needs she's supposed to get 4 drops a day or 240 mcg and I've started this week with 1 drop a day and will progress slowly, just making sure she doesn't have a bad reaction, but I see alot on the internet against potassium iodine has anything in your opinion changed in the last 2 years on the subject?

I've been feeding raw to my puppy for a couple of months now and she loves it but I'm starting to notice some hair loss around her back legs. I've added soaked and finely chopped pumpkin and sunflower seeds for the manganese and zinc but I'm lacking red meat as beef is so expensive here. She's scratching a lot and I'm struggling to work out if it is fleas (doesn't look like it) or an allergic reaction (more likely). Iodine would seem to be the only gap I have left but there doesn't seem to be any info about how much of it is needed for puppies. These videos are very useful but most seem geared towards adults cats/dogs and the poor puppies, who need the correct ratios of food additives the most, are being overlooked. At 7 months I've got her food down to 5% of her body weight but these gaps in what is best for puppies still need to be filled. Any help greatly appreciated.

I have to say that i am a bit overwhelmed. I started raw feeding to get away from all the added stuff in my cat’s diet , but with months of trying to understand what i need to add to a commercial food with only meat in it i am still very confused . I understand i need to add iodine , but what about all the other things ? Is there such a thing as a complete supplement powder for cats that only has the essential stuff and no veggies? I seem to only find these ones My cat had an allergic reaction to a blend that had supplements in it and i have no clue if it’s the eggs, the beef , the mussels or the fish that caused it . I want to provide the best for my old cat but i am very afraid i’ll make her sick . I feel like a failure because i can’t provide a lot of different proteins at the same time and can’t do a homemade diet . I am also absolutely unable to understand any literature that is more complex than your videos :( I hope i am not the only one

Yep! Some raw feeders use iodized salt, however I don't really suggest it since it could bring the sodium intake higher than what's recommended daily. Not always, but it's a risk if you're not keeping an eye on the numbers.

    • @delphinebez3045

@@PawsofPrey Morton Lite salt is half the sodium, and Dr Pierson would even advise using 50% of her recommended dose when a recipe contained an animal's neck/thyroid. Still, I asked Morton the exact iodine content of this LITE version, and I will post it here when they answer.
Dr Pierson was a pioneer on raw food. She does not do consults anymore. I guess her recipe can be improved, with more accurate measurements. I must say her cats lived very long lives... Up to their twenties !
