So my question, what is the dealy with that? Happy to see the series started, I really enjoy your explanation of how to go about playing with the game.
Hehe, I'm glad you got to catch the episode shortly after it came out! The mushrooms were changed in... either 1.16 or 1.17 so they no longer require you to harvest them with a knife. They now have "areas" where they'll respawn regardless of how you harvest them. And I've got your question added to the list! :)
That mechanic was changed in 1.16. you no longer have to harvest the mushrooms with a knife in order for them to grow back (and you'll see that harvesting them with a knife also no longer leaves a little mushroom stub).
Was wondering about that. Didn't realize it was a version update that changed it. I thought I had a mod that affected mushrooms in prior versions or something!
:D Yeah, it's handy. If you play that other block game, it works the same way. Though in Vintage Story, it ONLY works with left shift. I need to bug Tyron again because it's been a while with no movement on some lefty-righty accessibility issues.
Wow this game is much more than just minecraft with a big modpack. I think I'll first go about watching these sort of videos, already played a bit, tackled the starter guide and made some tools, but the progression system seems really complex so I'll see how it's like to progress first before I do it for myself.
Hey, welcome to Vintage Story! Sounds like you play games the same way I do--I like to watch a few videos first to learn the ropes before I dive in! I hope the Guide series helps you on your adventures! :)

@@Kurazarrh I very much am. a lot of youtubers and streamers are tooo slow, including everything...I'd just play the damned game myself if it were 1:1 like that. but where you can easily "skip the night" or use time lapse it definitely keeps it watchable. also...KUDOS to your patience about making an entire stack of arrowheads! even 9 at a time...that's soooo boring! careful lighting fire with torches with combustible things nearby; attempted to light one of mine once and some how lit grass that got in the way of targeting the firepit, and everything lit up, fire spread to burnable bushes, baskets, even me! I had water nearby but the loss in fruit bushes, and baskets that were too close as I panicked vs. destroying the burning block and or placing dirt. Tried to use water, but the water source block became a problem of its own! T_T Learning lesson from school of hard knocks learned! lol But I ain't one to gossip... .
Yep, that's definitely a potential problem! I don't recommend putting firepits on flammable blocks, and I usually prefer to have at least a 1-block ring of other non-flammable blocks around them (or at least in front) just in case I miss while trying to light them.
Just picked this game up last night. Controls feel a little floaty compared to what I'm used to, but I'm excited to as where I can go in this game and your guide is treating me well so far. ❤
Hey that's awesome! Yeah it feels different especially if you're used to that other block game. Good luck and have a lot of fun!! Also try turning off vsync if it's on, that can help the floaty feeling!
:D In glad to hear you're looking for more! I'm going to be starting something new in Vintage Story for 1.19 soon. It won't be a Guide series, but something more relaxed and casual, focused on building, survival, and more mods!
@@Kurazarrh I like to see the building aspects. Perhaps try a modded playthrough. There's some really cool mods for 1.19 such as better ruins and mods that add new decor. Can focus on good looking detailed buildings. The outlaw mod adds in fun combat moments.
I'm happy season 2 is here! Something I never noticed before is that they categorize mushrooms as a vegetable? Which is just plain weird in my opinion since fungi are much closer to being animals than plants and they contain a lot of protein.
Thank you! Glad you're excited for the series! If I had to guess, it's probably because from a culinary perspective, mushrooms are treated like vegetables. Kind of like tomatoes that are actually fruit, but you wouldn't put it in a fruit salad (unless it's salsa!). ;)
@@loviebeest Haha, possibly! Or more than that--tomatoes are a highly cultivated plant, and the world has gone through an apocalypse event, so anything that requires cultivation would be gone! Maybe we could find the tiny, wild tomatoes that we cultivated our modern large ones from, but no heirlooms for us! ;)
Are you talking about the voices? XD I think the oboe voice is growing on me. I just hated getting stuck with the trumpet voice back in 1.17. @@Kurazarrh i dont normally but sometimes those wolves and bears are too annoying and scary so let em burn!!!! and the floaty bit of the left over leaves are a must to clean up afterwards ...floaty things MUST be destroyed!
They're not bad in the early game, especially when you're in the "stuff my face with whatever's on hand" phase, or if you're on a long journey and living off the land. But if I'm cooking, I'd rather have just about any other fruit (but not cherries or lychees).
hi Kuruzarhh, love watching you play vintage story, sorry if this was in episode 0 or posted elsewhere, but can you share your display settings? im particularly interested in the view distance. thanks for the videos!
So randomly, I just started watching this video cause life got distracting, but I had to comment on something - when making a knapped tool I am surprised that the recipe doesn't include some sort of fiber or grass string to bind the stick and head.
I would guess because in order to get grass, you need to have a knife in the first place. It could be done by substituting cattail reeds or papyrus, I suppose, with grass as an alternative once you have your first knife. I'll bet this is already on Tyron's radar, though! XD
Yeah, I wish there was a chance that like 50% of the mature fruit trees would bear fruit in the first year! Kind of odd from a realism standpoint that ZERO fruit trees would have anything in a particular year! lol
True, they do last longer. It makes them fine for foraging on longer trips, and if you're hungry, the best food is any food! But later in the game, cranberries are pretty much best used for pink dye and decoration!
I probably should have been clearer in my explanation there: you can cook a *full pot* of meat and veggies, which is six meals, with as few as three pieces of wood. It's not possible to cook an entire six-meal pot of meat & veggie stew on one piece of wood, though a pot with just one serving in it could be done.
@@fictitiousnightmares I tried this out just now. You're correct, though this behavior appears to be due to a bug introduced in 1.18. It's not supposed to function this way--and the UI glitches out when you do this, too! What's *supposed* to happen is, after the log burns out and the fire's temperature drops below the pot's temperature, the pot's temperature is supposed to start dropping as well. Typically, by the time the fire temp hits about 100C, the pot temp should start dropping, and by 50C, it should be dropping even faster. Once the pot's temp gets below 150C, the cooking progress bar should reverse (pretty quickly), and completely reset after a few seconds.
@@Kurazarrh Yeah, I saw the bug where the temp/progress bar stops updating and showing what it should once the fire goes 'cold', but it still has the temp and finishes cooking. The temp DOES actually drop, you just can't see it. If you tried to cook 6 servings with 1 log you would see that it does the same thing, except it fails as the temp dropped, even though you couldn't see it due to the progress display bug when the fire goes cold. So not sure there is actually a problem with the temps, just the display of them.
@@fictitiousnightmares I'm still pretty convinced it's a bug, unless Tyron also changed how quickly the food temperature drops in 1.18. I don't see mention of that in any changelogs, though.
Yep! It's pretty handy. Though if you're doing other things like knapping and clayforming, I think you lose the benefit of the reduced rate until you stop doing those activities. Plus, sitting while doing those makes them somewhat difficult!
Think that “voice” of your character is not annoying, it is adorable. But you sound as if you need a huge Fenrir to protect you from the cold, cruel world…something that would make bears and wolves think twice about attacking. Alas, that Vintage Story has no such creature! Possibly you could impress the hostiles with your cooking skills? 😉
Yeah, this oboe voice is actually growing on me! It reminds me of the original voice I chose when starting the first season! If I'm going to be entertaining guests for dinner, I guess I ought to make a dining room, huh? :D
This looks interesting, I've been getting the itch to play Terrafirmacraft which i believe this is based on, but neither Vintage Story or building a TFC modlist are really an option for me.
@@Kurazarrh Unlikely, i could go and load up an old pack with the 1.7.10 version of TFC but the content it has is limited, no real support for mods outside it while the 1.18 version seems to have some modpacks that include Create which sounds like a neat combo but my system doesn't like the latest versions of MC. my 777 worldseed only shares very shallow similarities; granite does indeed start there but the topography is totally different and even looks kind of stretched as though it is being artificially warped.
What version of the game did you make your world in? And did you change any of the other settings? I've also heard that 1.18.3 might have changed the world generation a bit, so you might need to make the world in 1.18.1 and then upgrade again.
@@lostarsm9240 Yeah, someone else reported a similar issue with a world created in 1.18.3. It seems the main difference might be with the upheaval? But I'm not sure.
@@Kurazarrh Same problems here with 1.18.3. Standard of upheaval is now 30% not 40%, I tried both with 777 as a seed, but the map looks quite different to yours. Anyhow, I just discovered Vintage Story this Sunday and you yesterday. Really like your Videos :)
@@lukrezialaval2406 Hey, I'm glad you've discovered Vintage Story and my channel! Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot I can do about the seed mismatch, but if you temporarily downgrade your installation to 1.18.1 and create the world with the 777 seed, then you should be able to update to 1.18.3 and it *should* still work. I'm not sure how upgrading in the process of playing affects how the world generates (whether it has no effect or whether all chunks generated after updating will be "1.18.3" chunks).
Was that a red skull and cross bones on the map after the cut to go get blue clay at 41:14? (Also on the main map at 42:18) Did you do the dieing? Enjoyed the first, of second season video! Thanks!
Thank you!! No, I didn't die over there, but I thought I heard a bear. Unfortunately, I wasn't recording at the time, but I'm going to have to start recording more of my random little travels--bears and wolves no longer seem to be restricted to spawning in forested areas, which is a big pain!
I feel like I'm missing something, could you answer this please: is there a reason why you only make one bowl and one pot instead of 4 each? I thought that when firing stuff in a pit, the time it took was uniform depending on material used to fire it, and that you always consumed the same resources to fire a pit kiln (a certain amount of hay and sticks, as well as logs or peat).
In the very beginning of the game, when time isn't on your side and you need to be out gathering resources, the last thing you want (as a new player, at least) is to spend more time or resources than you really need. You don't need more than one pot and one bowl at the beginning of the game, when digging up clay is a very time-consuming task. Hence, for a new player, one of each is enough, and maximizing for longer-term efficiency doesn't pay out in the short- to medium-term (and that added efficiency is so negligible in the long term that it might as well not even exist). Granted, if I left two slots open in the pit kiln, it probably wouldn't have hurt too much to make one additional bowl and pot (or three bowls total), but IIRC I was trying to conserve clay for other things.
I wish! I think that's just placeholder text for what the developer wants to add in the future. There ARE ruined villages with like, 3-5 ruined structures, and there are also small camps of 2-3 traders, but no actual villages.
lol, Kurazarrh, um, I am still working on watching both your rust world, and vintage story guild 1.16 (think that's what its called). which category does that put me under? I wonder how much I will get confused between the series. ? Hope you don't mind if I end up leaving a comment, and not realizing its for your other, other series. I work 3 jobs, so I'm usually running on, sleep depravation. 2 full time and one part time, that's about 75 hours of working. Either way, I am enjoying your videos. I still laugh about your comments about other block games. Is there anything you have been dreaming about the creators of Vintage adding to the game?
Oh wow! 75 hours is a LOT of work! @.@ As for adding new things into the game, every time I think of something, Tyron seems to add it to the game... Lol!
aaahahaha. just updated to 18.2. start oooonce again XD way easier to start with trader's base btw. some boxes, bed... a bit cheeeeezzzzy. but for new players kinda good i guess =)
I just bought the game and I'm very confused about the mapgen. I've used all of the same settings as you, thinking I'd play along, but even when I get myself to the same coordinates you're at I have a completely different-looking terrain - the shapes of the lakes in particular are notably different. I understood from your episode 0 explanation that it would only be the vegetation and NPCs and the like that would change, but the actual structure of the world would be consistent across uses of the same seed? Or did I miss something?
As it turns out, there are a couple things that have happened since version 1.18.0 (were on 1.18.15 now) that are preventing folks from generating the same world. 1) In 1.18.3, Tyron made some changes to the terrain generator to fix some bugs. This means that the map in the series can't be generated if you're on 1.18.3 or newer. In theory, you SHOULD be able to temporarily downgrade to 1.18.0 and generate the world, BUT... 2) Tyron just fixed a bug for the upcoming 1.19 release where he basically found that even worlds generated with the same seed sometimes have different appearances due to inconsistent values being set for the other parameters. I'm going to put up a "first save" world download in the description, so check back in a few minutes or an hour and check the video description for that. The only thing I worry about in addition is whether *additional* terrain generation after the initial load is going to also be affected, but I hope not.
@@Kurazarrh So in answer to your question about whether it makes a difference to the rest of the world, the answer is... kinda? Point the First: When loading your backup file, I appeared at roughly the same coordinates that you were at the start of the video but those coordinates were on a different part of the map. Thankfully you were between two fairly distinctively-shaped shorelines, and I wasn't too far away, so I made a cross-country dash to match up with you. Takeaway: Playing along, I won't be able to rely on matching your coordinates since it looks like my map's been shifted to the north-east by maybe 50 bocks or so. Point the Second: The fruit trees were in the same places you found them and were of the same types. Yay! Takeaway: Maybe specific one-off vegetation spawns like fruit trees are stable across the board? Point the Third: When I got to where you found the cattails, they were extremely under-represented. I was only able to harvest enough for 3.5 baskets, never mind the storage box. So I will be on the lookout for more cattails as I follow you around, and in the meantime be very conservative with what else I collect. Takeaway: Maybe general or area-covering vegetation is created on the fly as you get near it? Anyway, I'm still going to give following along a go. Hopefully the RNG won't screw me over too badly. 🤞
@@seonab Hey awesome thanks for the feedback on the experience! It's odd that the world coordinates shifted... While I definitely experienced that while regenerating worlds using the same seed, I would have thought that a world that already had been partly generated would keep its coordinates. Very strange! As for plants (apparently other than fruit trees!) They are not seed-deterministic, so you will definitely see some differences but should generally be in about the same area.
For the big map/minimap? Not a mod, that's part of the base game. Though if you're playing in Wilderness Survival mode (I think maybe Homo Sapiens mode, too), the map and minimap are disabled. You can toggle them on with (I think) F6, or by going into the interface settings.
15 health is the default, but several classes modify it. The Clockmaker, Malefactor, and Tailor all get fewer hit points, while the Blackguard gets more.

All this time and I never knew about the left shift to mass craft. Holy moly.
:D Yeah, it's handy. If you play that other block game, it works the same way. Though in Vintage Story, it ONLY works with left shift. I need to bug Tyron again because it's been a while with no movement on some lefty-righty accessibility issues.
Awesome! Can't wait to see what you make this time!

That goat jump scare lol, thanks for reaching me how to play too!

No worries though I survived (the phone did too lmao)

Wow this game is much more than just minecraft with a big modpack. I think I'll first go about watching these sort of videos, already played a bit, tackled the starter guide and made some tools, but the progression system seems really complex so I'll see how it's like to progress first before I do it for myself.

I'm enjoying this series as a moderately experienced vintager. but you might teach me some things I didn't think of.
Hey thanks for watching and stopping to let me know! :D Whether it's for education, inspiration, or just something to chill to, I hope you enjoy the series!
@Kurazarrh I am so far. I like that you zip through a lot of the slowpaced stuff. with timelapses and jump cuts. it helps keep the pace engaging.
@@TizonaAmanthia :) Awesome. Glad you like the pacing!
[you did make me decide to give archery a try....the sling at 1 damage a stone is great early game, but once you get metal arrows and high tier bow...yeah....I need a faster kill time.

careful lighting fire with torches with combustible things nearby; attempted to light one of mine once and some how lit grass that got in the way of targeting the firepit, and everything lit up, fire spread to burnable bushes, baskets, even me! Tried to use water, but the water source block became a problem of its own! T_T Learning lesson from school of hard knocks learned! lol
But I ain't one to gossip...

Kind of like tomatoes that are actually fruit, but you wouldn't put it in a fruit salad (unless it's salsa!). ;)
@@Kurazarrh That explains a bit. I wonder if that's why there isn't tomato in the game because of having to categorize it as a vegetable or fruit. XD
@@loviebeest Haha, possibly! Or more than that--tomatoes are a highly cultivated plant, and the world has gone through an apocalypse event, so anything that requires cultivation would be gone! Hell yeah! Can't wait to get into this!

Cranberries take twice as long to rot. I like them better!
They're not bad in the early game, especially when you're in the "stuff my face with whatever's on hand" phase, or if you're on a long journey and living off the land. But if I'm cooking, I'd rather have just about any other fruit (but not cherries or lychees).

Awesome! Thanks for dropping a comment to say so!
hi Kuruzarhh, love watching you play vintage story, sorry if this was in episode 0 or posted elsewhere, but can you share your display settings? im particularly interested in the view distance. thanks for the videos!
I don't think I showed my display settings (and sometimes I tinker with them) but I usually play with the view distance at 384.
XD
The icon for ore will change the text to copper if you pick the orange color in the top right of the color selection.
Thank you! I remember reading that in the patch notes and it's been pointed out by a couple other people, but it slipped my mind! :D
@Kurazarrh No problem, I'm just glad that you are making these videos as I just recently got into Vintage story
You can tell it's a larch tree because of the way that it is.
You have to go through winter before the fruit trees will bloom and until they bloom no fruit
Yeah, I wish there was a chance that like 50% of the mature fruit trees would bear fruit in the first year! Kind of odd from a realism standpoint that ZERO fruit trees would have anything in a particular year! lol
Point of Information: Cranberries provide the least nutritional value of any berry, but last more than twice as long without rotting.
True, they do last longer. It makes them fine for foraging on longer trips, and if you're hungry, the best food is any food! But later in the game, cranberries are pretty much best used for pink dye and decoration!
58:26 Actually you can cook red meat and veggies with a single piece of wood. I cook all my meals with one piece of firewood each.
@@Kurazarrh I probably should have been clearer myself. I cook a full crock worth. 4 meals with one firewood.
This game is so un-intuitive. This really helped. Liked and subbed. Thanks!

Sitting reduces hunger rate?? I gotta sit down...

Not an option? That's too bad. I hope that situation changes for you soon!
On paper I should be able to run Vintage Story, but I have tried and the game just refuses to launch.

my 777 worldseed only shares very shallow similarities; granite does indeed start there but the topography is totally different and even looks kind of stretched as though it is being artificially warped.
What version of the game did you make your world in? And did you change any of the other settings? I've also heard that 1.18.3 might have changed the world generation a bit, so you might need to make the world in 1.18.1 and then upgrade again.
@@Kurazarrh I did update to 1.18.3 before making the world. That makes more sense now.

No, I didn't die over there, but I thought I heard a bear. Unfortunately, I wasn't recording at the time, but I'm going to have to start recording more of my random little travels--bears and wolves no longer seem to be restricted to spawning in forested areas, which is a big pain!
wooo
You might want to use the web pronunciation tool for peridotite unless you are joking. Sorry if I missed the joke.
For $500 a day I'll stop trolling everyone... 🤣🤣
@@Kurazarrh That makes sense, thanks for replying
so.....would i be wrong if i said this was basically terrafirmacraft as a full blown game? cause thats pretty cool
The developer actually wanted to do his own take on TFC and started VintageCraft, but then ended up making an entirely separate game instead!

Is there village's in Vstory now?.. going on what the trader said.
I wish! I think that's just placeholder text for what the developer wants to add in the future. There ARE ruined villages with like, 3-5 ruined structures, and there are also small camps of 2-3 traders, but no actual villages.

@@alexanderff6272 No, though they did potentially fix an issue with the placement of a structure that's new in 1.18 in general.
Started playing this got killed by a goat a boar a bear a wolf no food except for some roots.
Yeah, nothing really wants to die, so you have to be careful when hunting, or you might just end up being the meal!
@@Kurazarrh Aha, that all makes sense. Thank you so much for both the explanation and the save file. 🥰
@@seonab Sure thing! Good luck! :D
Wohoooooooooooo!

Whats the map mod are u using
For the big map/minimap? Not a mod, that's part of the base game. Though if you're playing in Wilderness Survival mode (I think maybe Homo Sapiens mode, too), the map and minimap are disabled. You can toggle them on with (I think) F6, or by going into the interface settings.
