Please don't shorten the Peta Pixel Podcast since it is actually one of the most entertaining while informative photography-centred podcasts! Please continue just like this.
Besides the talking points regarding the R5 Mark II and the R1 I personally really liked that you just shared your impressions about the Canon USA shooting event. It seems like Canon has to do some homework regarding this as well, because this sounds like a very uncomfortable (for the participants) and inappropriate event for such important products in Canons line-up.

@@wtfnahmean It depends on what you define as "good". Is the R1 "good"? Oh yes it absolutely is, but there are a lot of bird and wildlife shooters who are waiting for a high-res pro body from Canon, like Z9. Those aren't gonna be satisfied just because the R1 is "good". At least Canon should have made an R1X with the R5ii sensor as a high-res option.

I think it is a flagship for Canon in the sense that it's a 1D series camera, but mirrorless - however, that's not enough anymore to compete favourably with what Nikon and Sony are up to. Over the last 5-7 years, what people expect from a top end camera has really changed. I think Nikon started this with the D850, which wasn't technically their flagship, but nonetheless was revolutionary at the time for combining high res, high dr, good noise performance, fantastic af and fast shooting speeds in one body. Before that it was always the case that you'd have to decide to buy either a fast camera, or one aimed at the best image quality. D5/1D/a9 or D810/5D/a7r , basically. Then Sony later applied that same concept to mirrorless with the a1, except even more "and the kitchen sink" style. Nikon follows that market segmentation by throwing everything into the Z9, and then making essentially the same tech available cheaper with the Z8. For Canon - it really seems like they're trying to go back to the DSLR market segments, which is somewhat ok for the R5 II (assuming the price is going to come down; by the way, in that particular segment Sony is kinda more old school with the much more specialized a7r V) but the R1 really looks like a difficult sell compared to the z9, a1 and, I think, particularly the a9 III. It's a highly specialised sports and action camera (the R1 is), and within that niche a cheaper camera with a global shutter and 4x the burst rate and arguably better autofocus already exists. That's very bad news for Canon, I feel.

after some time watching reviews: If the dynamic range is better then than a9 III. That is an important thing. The frame rate is enough for real world use. But with the fast shutter speeds, low noise is a thing that really makes a difference.
The second thing is the action focused auto focus that follows large balls. Jaren pointed out this. That makes also a difference. Now one else does this.

What makes sense to me with the lack of CFExpress 4.0 support is likely down to a combination of four things: Heat, power consumption, camera processing/cost limitations and (imo the most pivotal one) write error risk.
Heat can be mitigated with better cooling or with thermal throttling, power is something you're eating as the additional write speed by the controller is going to eat it no matter what (this point ties to hardware constrains also, think why we don't see more than gigabit in cameras is the cost of those controllers is prohibitively expensive considering the client side restrictions likely only being gigabit).
That brings us to write errors. Faster writes need a smaller signal diamond on those contacts due to the higher frequencies used. Which is something you can eat in a desktop/server/laptop which are assumed to be in more controlled environments as far as EMI is concerned. But a camera body is a different story, it's far safer to go with the slower standard for data integrity reasons than risk the faster standard ruining the image in situ. (remember, while the spec may account for it, no battle plan survives contact with the enemy)

That was a great conversation and yeah by the end it really expresses how a lot of Canon customers feel. Whoever's running cannons camera division really needs to get fired will be pushed out. Their strategy of where the best so we're going to lock everybody in and then we're obviously struggling with sensors even though I swear the R5 sensor is probably the best one they've ever made.. it's just bizarre times for that company. Most are five users are not going to upgrade to the r52 because the R5 was already so good. It's hard to sit here and say that it's worth switching systems at all anymore. I switched from Sony to Canon when Canon released the R6 MarkII, and I'm happy with my decision mostly for the excellent RF lenses and seamless adaptability of the EF lenses. But right now each of the big 3 camera brands are so close with their bodies and lenses that it's not really worth switching unless you need something like a global shutter sensor of the A9iii, or need specific lenses that another manufacturer has that yours doesn't like Canon's 28-70 f/2. Technology is plateauing when it comes to camera bodies. My R6 MarkII does 70-80% of what the flagship R1 is doing, and I think about when I first got into photography with my 6D MarkII comparing that to the 1DX MarkII or III was like comparing a honda to a ferarri, it did maybe 25% of what the flagship did. Now my 6 series is competing well with the 1 series body. Wack.

...But better : 24-70 f/2.0 😅 So one more argument for Sony ecosystem, despite I fully agree that today modern FF cameras from big players are soo good and so similar to each other that you have to had very specific reason to choose one after other.

@@youmysterious I've heard that as well. I've also heard Canon is reportedly working on a second version of the 28-70 2.0 which is crazy considering they still don't have basic lenses like the 24mm, 50 or 85mm 1.4s, or any telephoto primes aside from the monstrously expensive 400 2.8 and 600 f/4s. I also think Sony's version of the 2.0 zoom will be very good, but have a more clinical look compared to Canon's versions. I'm a fan of Canons L series lenses because typically they look more interesting than the competitors, and it's nice to see images with character rather than perfect clinical sharpness, flatter images that are perfectly corrected all the time. Sigma is a good example of this, their lenses are great, but can lack character, unique flaring or microcontrast

    • @borassictime918
      @borassictime918 3 місяці тому +3

@@jordanmitchell1433 The question really is do you “need” a global shutter or “need” a 28-70 f2. The plateauing of tech is undoubtedly true, with the exception of price. The Canon R1 is a staggering £7k (body only) in the UK with, as yet, no third party glass options (supposedly coming). Nikon’s flagship Z9 is £5k (body only). The Z6iii is just £2,700k (body only), so you could almost but a Z9 and a Z6iii for the same price as an R1. Seriously, who’s gonna jump to Canon???

    • @jordanmitchell1433
      @jordanmitchell1433 3 місяці тому

@@borassictime918 But it's important to define "Need". I do real estate video and wedding photography. I need a wide angle, do I need the 15-35 2.8? No, but the 2.8 aperture is better than the f/4 of the 14-45 f/4L which drew me to it. Do I need the 50 1.2 for weddings? Absolutely not, many photographers get their wedding work done with a 50 1.8 and so did I at a time.
I don't think either of these cameras are making anyone jump systems. If you're invested in any of the big 3, the only reason to switch would be lens preferences. Perhaps with this release many people have decided to go back to Sony or Nikon for Sigma and Tamron lenses. Canon's flagship is a bit disappointing and they still aren't allowing third party lenses for it.

So if you take the RAW file out of the camera and then put it back in (even with the sidecar file) the camera preview is still going to show you the original embedded JPG. That's why I believe you don't see the changes made to the file. Now, even if the camera is reading the RAW image, it's probably not set up to also apply the changes that are in the sidecar file. In my view, this release is sort of an exclamation point on a bad multi-year run from Canon. These cameras aren’t necessarily *bad*, but after being arguably the industry leader in the DSLR era, Canon has made mistake after mistake with their mirrorless line, and I think some people thought this release would get them back on top, but it really hasn’t.
It feels like Canon has banked on doing most of their sales to existing Canon users, and they figure people who are loyal to Canon will continue to want to upgrade to the latest and greatest in Canon. This theory could have worked when Canon was a market leader, but they are far from it now and other brands offerings are getting incredibly compelling.
Your comments about how these bodies aren’t going to sway non-Canon users to move over to Canon hit the nail on the head, but to be honest I genuinely think Canon feels they don’t need to convert people. They think existing canon users will continue to buy their products in droves because of the supposed strength and prestige of the Canon brand. In reality, I think that luster is wearing off but Canon doesn’t realize it.
Canon needs to pull their heads out of their you know what and take a look at the mirrorless camera market with fresh eyes, because whether they realize it or not, they are falling behind. If someone brand new to photography was jumping into the hobby and wanted an interchangeable lens camera, I don’t see how anyone could recommend they start with a Canon over all the other offerings on the market.

Hi I use both the R5 and R3 and do a lot of sport as well as the usual weddings and family stuff,I think that the R1 is for a specific shooter who has to be able to capture the moment in any condition, and it will deliver this 100% so focus takes priority over megapixels and if you want to do a mixture of wildlife, sport and all Chandra’s of photography then you have the R5ii , most people buying these cameras are probably Canon shooters and have acquired glass over the years. In my view these are not entry cameras and so most people will be looking at upgrading from existing 1dxiii or R5 or even making the jump for the R6. I personally prefer images that are in focus when I shoot over more megapixels and may not be as accurate or consistent

The r1/r3ii is more like the a9iii. It’s an amazing sports and wildlife camera, but it isn’t worthy of a flagship title in the modern terminology like the a1 is a flagship and the r5ii battles against.
But also a company is allowed to define what they call a flagship. It’s not about what consumers define a flagship.
The a1 and r5 series compete directly. If the a1 is a flagship then the r5 series should be a flagship in the way it competes.
The r1/r3ii is definitely more of a niche camera like the a9iii. It’s for photojournalists and sports and wildlife photographers. But the r5ii may be a better wildlife camera than the r1 because of the mp and ability to crop shots as needed.

Its not that they can't do higher mpx, they just take R&D to what is needed in their product segmentation for their targeted audience. Also canon knows that Sony or Nikon users wont jump ship and are not trying to snatch them contrary to what the two others wants to do.

    To put the correct perspective-
EOS R1 is not disappointing if you see it as a standalone 1 series Canon camera. 1 series enters into mirrorless market. Going by the history, 1 series was never about MPs. 1 series was about having all top-of-line features together in single camera -most advance tech, functionality, reliability, speed, ruggedness and many more things which you find in pieces in cameras below 1 series.
I think controversy arises because of one viewpoint that R1 looks like an all upgrade to R3. And, I myself wonder why now R3 exists? If R3 fills gap between R5 and R1 then is there really a need to fill that gap? Imagine a scenario where we have R5 series and then directly EOS R1. Then may be the debate wouldn't take place.

A few times, you said Canon's sensor development is behind Sony and Nikon's...
Reminder: the R1 and R5 both use dual pixels. For every pixel in the final image, there are two sensor pixels to read (both sharing a microlens). So the R1 has a 48MP sensor and the R5 has a 90MP sensor. These turn into a 24MP image and a 45MP image, respectively. (Nikon and Sony do not use dual pixels--they alternately half-mask every 12th row of pixels).
The per-pixel readout rates are the same between Canon, Sony, and Nikon. It's just that Canon's R5ii has twice the pixels to read as the Z8; and the R1 has the same number of pixels to read as the Z9 (but the R1 outputs a 24MP image instead).

It seems to me that Canon HAD to put an R1 in the hands of photographers in time for the Olympics, so they just released what they had.
They're a generation behind the competition (maybe two by the time the A1 II comes) and you can't be putting out 24MP when the competition are double that. Even if pros don't 'need' 45/50MP, we all know your specs are your PR headlines at launch in tech.
The R5 II seems compelling though, and even if they're not great, it seems they are giving features to create 'better' stills files. Credit for trying to help stills photographers get better IQ for the first time since 2017.
These physical fans, and especially that battery grip for the R5 II with the fan built in to avoid yet more overheating is a bit of an eyesore. Will they release one which isn't a brick for stills shooters who don't need a fan?
I genuinely don't like being negative or a 'hater' but as a purely stills shooter you do tend to sigh when a new camera is released. Hey guys two questions,
Seems to me that this 'R1' may have originally been a R3 mk2 and the fabled R1 global shutter just failed in development, thoughts?
Secind ive been looking around for a new lens for my fuji x-s10 and think ill grab the 50-140 but in looking I realised that the actual lens I want doesnt exist, (my perfect lens would be a 30-90 f2.8 LM with internal zoom. So my question is if you could make your dream lens what would it be and on what mount?
Thanks as always, love your work

it may be they were running different fw because the hw was varied and required different sw to work around those hw differences

Does the new battery give more usable shoot time to shoot to the R5 2? The biggest issue I had with the R5c was the abysmal battery life. It was straight up unusable in the majority of professional settings unless I rigged it out with a Vmount because I was getting sub 40 min of power (not even recording, ~30min or less of actual record time). Unless they fix the battery life, I still would not be able to recommend this camera to any professional video shooter.

I've been shooting Canon since 2003. I switched to Sony this year (from 1dx to a9). I still prefer SLR, however I didn't feel supported by Canon (or the rest of the industry) in that regard. Their mirrorless remain underwhelming for what I shoot (predominantly automotive photos, pans in particular) and since I was switching my lenses I didn't mind switching brands. I'm so bummed to see the R1 specs, and I don't regret leaving Canon. Sony still feels alien in my hands, but it gets the job done. I hope Canon can right the ship. I'd love to go back.

I like PetaPixel because they give very honest reviews. Upon reading the spec sheets on both cameras I found myself to be very underwhelmed with the release. I'm a diehard canon guy but, as mentioned in the video, these bodies are not the most competitive bodies in the market especially when you look at what Nikon and Sony are doing. However, I'm hopeful that with more official firmware and hands on reviews, the sentiments towards these bodies will improve.

I think a lot of canon users were hoping for a minimum megapixel size of 28 megapixels resolution, with low light improvements and improved dynamic range over the R3.

How is the R5 mkIi AF compared to R6 Mk Ii? I was waiting to sell mine and switch to R5 but the lack of AF features on R5 did not make sense. Is R5 mk Ii worth selling R6 Mk Ii to switch over to? Or investing more in lenses instead with R6 Mk Ii will be a better bang for buck. I'm mostly into wildlife photography.

I pre-ordered the R5ii today but I'm having second thoughts and might switch to the A9iii, which I've been thinking about for a few months. I was underwhelmed today but intrigued by the autofocus. Knowing that they fired Rudy Winston makes me far more likely to switch to Sony, though. Not seeing him on video today at the launch felt weird.

When I saw all the videos and working in PR myself, my immediate reaction was: What a cheapskate, poorly-executed, lackluster press event. Interesting to hear that you pretty much confirm this impression. The news of the layoffs are a real bummer and a sign of bad corporate culture.
As an existing Canon R5 shooter, I am still looking forward to the Mk. II with some anticipation and gonna buy one. The inclusion of eye-control AF and the new AF system, the faster than before reading-out sensor while maintaining the excellent (and for me industry leading) ergonomics and interface still make it a worthwhile upgrade. I still really like the Canon L-lenses, too. But they are so expensive.
On the other hand: When I am looking over to a Z8 and especially the excellent lenses Nikon offer in all price ranges, the (third-party) lens lineup that Sony has, I am constantly wondering, if I made the right choice.
