- We live in an increasingly globalized world, and Third Culture Kids are testaments to this evolution. Carolina Mejia explores the nuances of identity, especially for those who have grown up in different cultures and battle with not feeling directly represented by one. As citizens of an interconnected world, we hold the responsibility of acknowledging our position in it in terms of race, ethnicity, and identity. This talk aims to empathize with the Third Culture Kids experiencing rootlessness and exemplify all that is gained by being a citizen of the world. Carolina Mejia is an 11th grade student at Nido de Aguilas. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. I can relate to this girl! Listening to her I was transported back to my teen years, attempting to fit in with the other Latinos that I was going to school with. I had forgotten (until tonight)that I used some of those same methods as far as speaking to "fit in". I'm so glad to hear that she ultimately found her own way, appreciating her own personal traits as being Latina, despite the pale color of her skin! 👏🫶
My ancestry comes from Galicia in the north of Spain, which makes me as Celt as an Irish. But I was born and raised in South America, and therefore I too am a white latino (no capital "L" in this Spanish word). I have the advantage though that I live in Canada, have been here for half of my life, and racism is far less of a problem here than in the USA. Yet many can't believe I or my sisters don't come from Europe. We latinos come in all colours, sizes and races, we are not a race but a heterogeneous culture. I do tell everyone I am a proud latino and do refuse to be addressed as "George". And BTW, we do not speak español, we speak castellano
My family is originally from "Nueva Galicia " , in other words J A L I S C O mexico
Latinx is not a Race go to Argentina and than go to panama and you’ll find different races
I would say Latinos and Hispanic should find a lane l for themselves instead of attaching to Blackness, Asian-ness, or Whiteness.
Latina is not a race
Who says “Latinx” 💀☠️
@@GHOST_M3RK yeah for real, isn’t anglicized form Latin already gender neutral? Why not use that? No? 🤔
Of course it is NOT a race,it is just an ethnicity that has a significant percentage of both European and Native American ancestry that speaks Spanish or Portuguese as the mother tongue.
I had to come read the comments because she really never made a point? smh
I Guess it’s the exposure of people you are around. Growing up as a white Latina, the Latins didn’t consider me Latin and the white culture and Latin culture have conflicting thinking styles that steers from success. My favorite place is Barcelona for this reason. I look like them. We just have different accents. In the USA I’m dealing with people rather say I’m not Latin for competition purposes and use my features and last name to be able to persuade due to the white privileged she speaks of. It hurts seeing my life versus my indigenous loooking Latin family members.
The LATIN culture is the culture of the Romans. Maybe you mean "Latin American Culture". Please educate yourselves because all of you don't know anything about what it means to be Latins. It's all Roman language and culture.
@@BertLonney Excuse me sir, where were you educated? I am understanding that different places teach history differently. According to my history in the tri-state area of NYC, Latin America was conquered by Catholics which are Roman decent which is Latin decent. Latin is the mother of Spanish (Spanish is the vulgar of Italian) being anything under Latin is the romance languages.
@@BertLonney Also, I say growing up as a Latina as you say it is Roman because I was also raised under an Italian house as well. I was making a personal reference as well sir.
Your relatives are mestizo not indigenous, they have European ancestry and Native American (indigenous)
Correction: Growing up as a European American Latina, the Latins didn’t consider me Latin and the European American culture and Latin culture have conflicting thinking styles that steers from success.
That's interesting the conversation of of people to me in comments. She looks very Mediterranean/South Europe
Like she doesn't look Northern European.
But she doesn't look like she's an indigenous American or a mixture of not to say she may not have a mixture of indigenous in her.
* I'm of Mediterranean -South European descent and I wouldn't be able to tell if she was.
I have Latin American and middle eastern/North African ancestry, so I just go back farther and claim Amerindian and Phrygian
Latin identity is not defined by skin color! We're people of diverse backgrounds with a common language and culture.
Very common look amongst Colombians so whats her issue
I know! I’m watching this and I am so confused. She makes sound like if she is placed in a Latin country she would STAND OUT because she is so different than everyone else. She’s delusional 😅😅
@@elvisjd710she’s not talking about her experiences in Colombia tf? She’s talking about how she’s perceived in America. A lot of Latino individuals get offended when another Latino claims they aren’t perceived as such by Americans, but really.. just because you see her as latina… doesn’t mean others will. It’s a matter of perspective and nothing serious. Stop projecting your own insecurities and stop speaking for her own experiences, when you ARE NOT her! A Latino will obviously see her as Latina because she’s Latina? But what about other people? You don’t know that.
@@mysticqro950 insecurities? Hehehehe!
@@elvisjd710 lol be honest, your people gets triggered all the time whenever someone doesn’t meet the physical standards of an average Latina and receives different treatment, because your people are always portrayed as dark and short in America. That’s why your telenovelas are always casting the whiter individuals to make your country appear “whiter” than it already is. So, to stop further complications… she LOOKS “Latina” as a white Latina. She doesn’t look like a typical native Latina your people always try to hide in your media. I always find it funny when your people try to group your white population with the native population and pretend you are all the same, when you’re aren’t. In the eyes of foreigners, your average people surely don’t look the same as her.
@@elvisjd710 I never understood why your people always try to pretend all of you look the same as her, when we can clearly tell majority of your people coming to this country are dark/short. We are not bIind.
TEDx Talks Correction: Reflections of a European Brown Girl | Carolina Mejia Rodriguez | TEDxYouth@NidodeAguilas
No , that's not how that works , latinos are not all brown and brown people are all latinos.
Congratulations on being a brave young woman
One needs to build his or her own identity.

When Spain conquered the Americas, then it left an extremely lasting legacy.
She looks more Mexican than me and I’m 100 percent Mexican
Well, she doesn't exactly look like Amy from Kansas.
My immediate assumption if I saw her would be she's Latina....not sure who told her she doesn't
What part of Colombia is she from I see white Colombians all the time it’s not that rare to
See
White Spaniards new Spain (mexico), whites that came to south america, like the wekings (vikings) , like hernan cortez, conquered the Aztecs (Nike cortez inspiration), usa is like south america, the blacks with blacks, whites with whites, others with their kind..few.. diversities, but example usa: is english
Southern America is Spanish and different languages mix with Spanish, that's why their are Spanish whites, or Spanish pales of European ancestry..as well as the cross is differently in its culture.. this would be an example of white Hispanics, of ancestries of European or Germanic descendants, you can tell even by the eye color, blue, green, gray eyes..
Huh? She looks 999 % latina. In fact she looks like the quintessential latina teenager
Being Latin is not a Look, not a DNA and not a Race. Being Latin is a culture, Roman Culture.
You’re just saying that because you’re offended she doesn’t get perceived as Latina. It’s quiet obvious most Americans are only around the darker Latino individuals and you can’t blame them for that, when that’s all they see. Ofcourse she’s Latina, she never said she wasn’t. Yes, she looks “latina” because quite literally any race can be Latino, including white and bIack. The real question is, does she look like an Indiginous Latina? NOPE! That’s where you are wrong, and you should accept the truth. She’s obviously not fully native, and that’s ok. By her claiming she’s a “white Latina” isn’t making her less Latina, she’s equally Latina as everybody else. So, stop being defensive over something not so serious and pay more attention to the message.
So you proved my point that Latinos should be mostly considered mixed European and not natives that have nothing to do
@@mysticqro950 Relax child. I'm merely expressing that to me she looks like a typical latina (yes, indigenous). And that's not bad! I too, am a mix. I'm indigenous (Peruvian), white (Spanish, Basque, Celt) and European Jewish according to Ancestry. And pardon me, I'm as "pale" as she is. Do I get called anything other than a "latina" by white people? Absolutely not! I'm latina. My brown hair and eyes bear witness to my mixed heritage. Maybe my skin is white looking but like in that girl, you can read in my facial features I'm not a WASP (oh but I'm Protestant, yes I am! 😆)
@@brendaizquierdo5695 You’re 2 months late. I didn’t ask about your life story.
I hate that I look white! 👩🏽
LOL!
@???
Brown is the new white????
The Title of this video
What brown do you see? She looks Mediterranean to me.
Brown ?You call her skin brown ? You are blind btw not all Latinos are brown ,it's really sad that you don't know that .

I'm sure you don't even have the courage to speak to a crowd so why don't you go to your bedroom and cry by your own. :)
she doesnt look white
@@amazingkids9770 What is White? A social construct? People have historically tried to squeeze themselves into whiteness for its benefit, and now we're seeing this wave of Latinos doing the same. This girl doesn't look white. She doesn't look like a "plain jane" white girl... She looks like an ethnic girl that grew up around White people... White skin doesn't equate to whiteness, or it wouldn't be an issue to call Jewish folks white...
Yes she is, she’s either fully Spanish descent or mostly mixed with other parts of Europe, white latinos are usually a result of being fully or mostly spanish
@@mn0rule
A lot of genetic mestizos are white-passing. A lot of criollos are non-white looking (see tan skinned, dark featured ones). Genetics isn’t fair.
She’s white white 😅 are u mad
@@tovah8841
She’s not white. Here in Miami she’d fit in with every other Latino/Hispanic.
*LatinX
lol Its Latino's which includes everyone already, just how the language is, don't need to change it
