  • What assumptions do we make about others based on their gender or ethnicity? When Alejandro Jimenez first learned about the Hispanic stereotype of machismo, he was shocked. Was he doomed to a life of rage and aggression? In this inspiring talk and poem, he explores what it means forge your own identity.
Alejandro Jimenez is a poet, educator, and long-distance runner from Colima, Mexico. In 2011 he became the first Latino to win the Su Barrio Slam Poetry Competition. The following year he was a member of the SlamNUBA poetry team that placed 5th at the National Poetry Slam Competition in 2012. Alejandro works with youth in Denver and tries to laugh with them as much as possible.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The power Jimenez's tedtalk and poem at the end both gave me chills and made me reflect. Machismo (basically masculinity as I'll supplement the two) is taught and not innate. To preach empathy is powerful for many young people of color to see because it challenges a form of masculinity that is painted by individuals with hands paler than ours. We were never born into this identity and became indoctrinated into it by the "commonsense" that's just a re-hash of rich, white, heteronormative misogyny that wants us to view ourselves as less than human. We have the power to dismantle and construct an image that does not essentialize our community, and our men, as being monstrous, aggressive, and menaces to society. Stereotypes can be broken by what we do and what we say. These conversations that affect our entire community, (and I'm not talking just the latinx community). Oppression onto one is oppression onto all. It creates a chasm, a gap as Ta-nehisi Coates put it, creates barriers to those that benefit from our oppression and those who wish to take part in their "American dream".

I’m Mexican-American born in America never visited Mexico. My dad never taught to be a machismo he just helped get a good set of morals. The more I look at this I think making up a definition for being a man is just limiting us in general. We need to give everything to make the world a better place.

People will be very quick to try to maintain and grip onto old notions of thinking, violently opposing new ideals. Masochistic men will label this man as weak, soft, not. a. man. But here he is in the manifestation of the moment, pure as he is,genuine in his feelings of the world, he is here and he will speak his truth. A truth not many will clap for, nevertheless, the other side, will scream and cheer for his victory

Trust me-Mexican men will NEVER, EVER let go of machismo. This guy is educated. Big difference. Believe me-I face it every day here in Tijuana. It's pure bs. And just today, I thought that Mexico will never EVER progress because of this. So say what you want about being stuck between 2 cultures; people need to check their egos before true change can happen. Until then, expect it to keep on.

    • @GardenHomie

Well. It must be hard to be stuck between two cultures. It must be really rough as children. I think anything in extreme is not good, whether that's masochism, toxic feminism, etc. But, I think those parents that bring the kids over should really think about the challenges their kids are gonna face, language wise and culture wise. I think we all can benefit from learning about different cultures and what we can learn from them. I feel like I have seen the problems faced by men from the Latinix community. Alot of them are hardwired to be a certain way. I've heard it from some of them, that they are expected not to cry, to be macho, etc. To me, that's just making yourself into a person that's a robot. Same for the girls that are expected to be feminine, and give in to the man , or worse project their own internalized misogyny on other women.

I believe that your only begotten Son Jesus Christ shed His precious blood on the cross at Calvary and died for my sins, and I am now willing to turn from my sin.
You said in the bible that if we confess the Lord our God and believe in our hearts that God raised Jesus from the dead, we shall be saved.

WEAK! If my male partner was weak, I would not see it as a bad trait. Weak in my terms is more like a person who does not think they are more superior than me, just because of gender, race or culture. Weak to me would also be like someone not as risky to make decisions yet very precautious. Perhaps, women can have machismo too and that could be used as a tool of defense in my point of view on certain circumstances, yet that does not define that fact the Machismo is a good thing. Referring to La Malinche, I am starting to feel like she was a machista too. The aggression that she played by helping the Spaniards to defeat the Aztecs, I think that does make her machista. She felt superior to all other women because she was the favorite of all and always that one to be preferred over other women. Therefore, now that I look at it, both Men and Women can be machistas.

You pretend that believing in a "God" frees you from any worldly strictures, and whether you admit it or not, you are now a law unto yourself. That can only translate into serious ego problems, problems you don't mind inflicting on others. For example you wish to be seen as a Risk Taker, which is fine with me, but you Risk Takers have a bad habit of blithely risking the lives of 👉 OTHERS👈 as well. Because I love life I keep that in mind, about not being hi-jacked into just any one else's Wheel of Fortune. Whatever your opposition you always "win," not because your thinking is superior, but because you are laughably dense. A look into your up-bringing would likely be distasteful, if indeed there was careful parental care of value in your life. Your "self respect" is of necessity flimsy and contrived, none of this really your fault, having been handed a paucity of culture, plenty of cynicism, and consequently little regard for your fellow beings. You are likely quite as dangerous as you wishfully believe yourself to be. I wish the rest of us the best of luck when encountering such as you, in family, as neighbors, socially and in business, and what really frightens, in our very politics. 🍷😮

the issue we have about our definitions about masculinity is that, once we equate masculinity as being a circle pf very defined behaviors, that is when we experience problems. Our limiting definitions of masculinity squeeze, and destroy the authenticity of men in the world because, oftentimes, they do not truly fit the mold we've created. By eliminating our labels, we will liberate our men to be who they need to be. He is a frustrated, crying man. And the point here is: that is okay, and it always will be.
