Audio technica was never really focusing on the bass on any of their Headphones but well balanced, and refined music experience. I've all the models, except M40x.

I just bought a m40x and I'm in doubt: in terms of sound quality it really is amazing. But speaking of comfort, I already know that neither is good at this part. However the m40x was at the limit of my ears and head. In the head, the central stem precedes, in the ears, even with the earpiece in the maximum opening, I feel that it is at the limit (yes, maybe I have the head and the big ears). Is the m50x a little bit bigger physically? I loved the sound of the m40x, but the question is whether the m50x would be more comfortable in my case. Thank you and congratulations again.
Thanks, m50x isn't bigger physically, and doesn't have better comfort, especially because it's heavier. However, the pads on m50x do seem a little softer. Dekoni earpads for m series makes them a lot more comfortable.

I have the M40 x . Main problem with all these headphones is these aren't really suitable for humid weather like in India may be better for cold europeon countries. ear cushion will start disintegrating in months. so now most of the time I use my old sennheiser 275 ear phone
Yeah, these are really not long lasting unless you get a different type of earpads.

Totally. Also check out HD600, that is kicking for more than 20-25 years. I haven't tried the new AKG stuff though, that could be good too.
While the m40's are no slouch and sound great for the money, in my opinion the M50's are the better model. Better sound stage and better overall sound. Really though, you'd be fine with either. Go to your local guitarcenter when able and compare both models in person to decide for yourself.
I'm using since long the M50x, but I just got also a M40x. Main 40x purpose is as a on-the-road/battlefield headphones, to keep my M50x devoted to studio applications.
I like them both a lot: M40x is more "woody" and with a warmer mid-range, while the M50x shines a lot more in the high and low frequencies. A very good combo IMHO also for critical listening.
Great review !! I bought Sennheiser 4.40bt headphones 2 years ago for listening to songs. Should I consider buying the ath m40x headphones for studio monitoring/mixing, or the Sennheisers will do fine?
If you find 4.40BT to be comfy enough, it'll do fine. Upgrade to something better if you have to, don't waste money in side grading.
@@TechReflex I don't have large ears, so i find the Sennheisers comfortable enough. The ear pads have worn out though. I love the clarity of various frequencies on these headphones and so will continue using them. Thank you !!
The m40x are definitely better, but difference isn't enough to make you feel like it was a big upgrade. Headphones like Hifiman 400i are selling for 13K, so even though they aren't for studio monitoring, they're on a completely different league over m40x.

Like neutral, muddy, soundstage, harshness, etc. Am I making sense? As of now it is kind of vague for someone getting into good headphones
Most people equate sound quality with loudness and thumping bass! That's different. Bass heavy headphones usually produce muffled sounds compared to "audiophile" headphones which produce a more flat sound. Although it is impossible to achieve a completely neutral sound and that's why every headphone sounds different. If you want to experience neutral and clear sound, these headphones(m40x m50x) are a good start. Some people prefer open back headphones because of a wider sound stage, some prefer closed backs because of the isolation. There are so many metrics.

Yeah, much better than the typical gaming headsets, but they don't have a mic obviously, but you can buy cables that include a mic.

I Just bought M40x mainly for use with DAW and music production but found that they also work well with my Samsung S10 just for listening pleasure on the go with the bass end of the graphic equaliser boosted a little bit. Thumbs up.

Yeah m40x will be way better than closed back gaming headsets at this price range. May not be as comfortable though.

I have sony wh 1000xm3. I was thinking of getting ath m40x . Will it be a substantial improvement in term of audio quality over xm3? I know its an odd comparison, but i am keen to know whether getting a wired headphone like m40x will give me a significantly better audio quality than 1000 xm3 , or i will need to go to a higher price range . I'd say they are pretty comparable in terms of sound quality, the m40x is more balanced but with EQ, xm3 should be similarly capable. Comfort will be way better in the xm3. If you're looking for an upgrade from xm3, the m40x probably won't be it. Try investing in a better pair like Sennheiser HD58X, 6XX, Hifiman HE-4XX, Hifiman Sundara etc. for a significant upgrade (Sundara is available directly in India).

@@mahimjain5702 You can blindly go for Sennheiser HD 6XX or 650. Not easy to find in India directly, but even if you order from Massdrop, they will be 100% worth it even after you add the 40% custom duty. Or you can buy a second hand for lower price, search on facebook for 'Pre Loved Gear for Sale - by The Indian Audiophile Forum'.

Have you ordered from drop.com in india ? What is the process of paying custom duties for such orders? The shipping seen on drop website to india does not give options for DHL. The shipping company is not specified. I suppose it will come through india post. Will i have to pay the custom duty to the postman who delivers the parcel ?
The coiled cable has a purpose, visit a studio, you will understand.
I also use that cable way more often. For example when I'm walking somewhere I'm not gonna carry the straight cable with me. That'd be ridiculous. I've had mine for going on 2 years & everything is still in "like new" condition.
This was expected, considering the way Zeos was shitting on the M50s in his video. Well, I’ll still stick to my SHP9500S, though I need to find thicker pads that don’t change the sound signature.

Yeah, I don't usually take Zeos reviews too seriously as I think they are overly emotional (which is very entertaining) and vague, but m50x is one of the products that he's more accurate about than 90% of the youtubers, and he called it out even when he hadn't tried m40x.

They would be pretty similar I guess. I'd still pick m40x with EQ, except for the mechanical advantages of the m50x of course.

These headphones are fantastic for music. I hear Bose is very bass heavy, if bass is important to you the m50x apparenrly have more bass. I got the m40x though, and as a non-audiophile who only had cheap earphones before the difference is insane. People say poorly mixed music sounds flat but I have not noticed as a general user. you hear all parts of the song really well. Playing video games and listening to music is very enjoyable on the m40x.

HD598 is really good, have also compared them with m50x in a video, if you want something 'different' you could check out Koss Porta Pro.

Will these produce quality sound in games? Mostly fps shooters.
They're tuned flat. So it depends on what your audio signal is coming through.
These sound great on all my audio sources except for my phone. I had to download an equalizer to tweak the sound, but it's a phone after all.
& I only use the equalizer when listening to music I've downloaded to my phone for the most part. Games on my phone & most stuff on UA-cam & others sound fine as is.
It's been more than 5 years now using my m50x and I have been thinking exact along the same lines as this guy in the video!
M50X are definitely a very good pair of headphones, no doubt about that..
But yes, due to the design and other factors, m40x sounds even better than m50x.

No, the m40x is still one of the best value headphones. The competition is also not nearly as portable and flexible. You could check out the AKG K371 though, I haven't tried that.

I've heard that beyers are very treble centric, which isn't a character that I like, if you can use an equalizer, I may consider them. They should be way more comfortable for sure.

Yeah there are many better options now these days, you can look at Hifiman HE 400i or HE400i SE, it's slightly more expensive than m50x but is way better. (but you may need an Amp)
