Has Stellantis QC Gotten So Bad That They Forget To Put Main Bearings In Demon 170 Engines?

  • In the latest saga of reported Demon 170 engine failures, it seems the teardown of one has revealed that the factory neglected to install one of the lower main bearing shells resulting in a mysterious oil leak...but, that never actually happened.
Other failures of these engines may be completely legit, but this one is an obvious hoax. Here's all of the reasons that this accidental bearing deletion story and diagnosis could not have possibly happened. ‪@TKsGarage‬ ‪@ButterDaInsider‬

Abraham Lincoln bought a brand new 69 plumb crazy hemi Cuda convertible. Drove it off the lot. When he got home he stopped by Ben Franklin's place (they lived in the same HOA at the time). When he opened the hood to show Ben he discovered that Ma Mopar built it without an engine block. Everything else was there; heads, intake, oil pan, rotating assembly, etc. No block. I used to work in a case ih assembly plant building the big Patriot sprayers. The engines were supposed to be filled with oil in the subassembly area before they were ever installed on the machine. Before they were started for the first time the oil was supposed to be checked. Well in my 6+ years there the stars aligned 3 different times where the engine area forgot to fill it with oil and the operator who started it neglected to check it first. Engines without oil will start right up and run just fine……..for about 90 seconds, and then they make the worst sound you ever heard before checking out. You’re exactly right Tony, that thing wouldn’t not have made it for more than a couple minutes just due to oil starvation.

I worked at an Olds dealer in the mid 80’s. We got in a new Cutlass, 3.8 V6, it sounded like hell and barely ran, brand new off the truck. GM sent us a new engine, our mechanics changed it and took a peek inside the original and found it had no rod bearings.

I want to believe that they are actually conforming to their internal testing requirements. But the number of major businesses (especially on the food and pharmaceutical side) that I know through direct conversation with QA that are being creative or trying to be creative with paperwork to get shit out the door is not removing doubt about this. My brother works as a service manager at a Dodge dealership and I asked him to see what he could find out and he was able to find an open warranty claim on a Deamon 170 that was found to be missing the lower half of the #1 main bearing. I’m not sure if this is a 2nd one or the same and some details were incorrect. The car came in with 217 miles for low oil pressure and leaking oil pan gasket. While replacing the gasket shavings were found this dealer was told to first inspect the crankshaft and second locate the source of shavings, which is reasonable because if the crank is shot, it doesn’t really matter where they came from. It’s an engine replacement anyway the number one bearing cap was found not to have a bearing, it is unclear if the bearing was not installed or if the shavings is what was left of it. My brother said that potentially it could be possible that it was not installed because he thinks number one and two rods are fed from the number two main so with the oil sump there there could be enough splash lubrication for just that one main, I asked him how would any oil make it to the top? If all the pressure was going out around the number one main he said the only thing he could think of would be the supercharger drive was applying enough force to the front of the crank To keep it stable enough the oil couldn’t come out faster than the pump could pump it like I said this is mostly speculation. The only thing I can say is fact is there is a demon 170 that has either chewed up and spit out a number one bearing or was assembled without it. The only reason I say assembled without it is even possible is there was no trace of that half under the cap

My '93 Jeep ZJ 5.2 went 170,000 original miles with half of a main thrust bearing (block side) that never made surface contact with the crank. After many years it did wipe out the crank in the thrust area to the point that the crank counterweights were hitting the block (reason for pulling the engine). The crank had about 1/2" end play. I have not checked line bore to see what caused the issue, but weird stuff can and has happened from the factory. Mine did have lower than average oil pressure on the gauge for a Mopar, but nothing alarming. I still have the block.

I worked at a Chrysler garage in 79. A main bearing knock on cold start was common in V8 engines. The v-belts would hold the crank up against the upper front main and cylinder firing would make a knock. All engines I worked on had a grooved lower main. Installing a solid lower shell would fix the problem. This was common in SBCs even with solid lower shells. In that case you had to take the front main clearance down to one thousand.

That was at the 1500 hp mark for a purpose built BAE or KB Hemi. Crank deflection at the flywheel would cause it. Imagine what's happening to a modern production Hemi at the 1000 hp mark.

Forget about the oil starvation issue for a second. The main thrust bearing was obviously in place. Tell me how missing a main bearing would have any effect on oil getting past the rear main seal? Absolutely no chance unless the seal was damaged in some way or the sealing surface had a nick, which damaged the sealing lip of the seal.

I figured they were going to say they found the oil leak being a hole in the block.
About the only thing I can figure is if the missing shell would let the crank move enough to cause the rear seal to leak. Hard to imagine how you’d get to checking bearings trying to fix an oil leak.

Their recommended oil change intervals guarantee someone who isn't paying attention will destroy this car. My Mom complained about the oil consumption, they consider it a normal amount of oil consumption. I thought I was telling her to do the right thing by
      A. Buying a Honda
      B. With maintenance records
      C. With a warranty.
It's not a bad car otherwise, but everything these days has what I've heard called" low tension rings" for better efficiency.

Fully grooved is worse, all it does is weaken the bearing and may reduce peak cylinder pressure. Top bearing can have groove as it does not see as much load can help oiling at startup i guess. I think porsche did study this decades ago and found no benefits only drawbacks on bottom half of bearing

Had a Ford Taurus in the shop years ago. A combustion leak test revealed exhaust gas in the coolant. When we pulled the heads to replace the head gaskets, guess what, no head gaskets. This wasn't a new car. It had been on the road for years. I thought the guys were trying to pull something on me. I wanted to see the head gaskets to see what they would tell me. When I didn't find hear gaskets I looked in the trash on the bench and floor. I looked everywhere. I asked my guys what they did with the head gaskets. They said they never took any head gaskets off the heads or block. It's hard to believe and I would have never believed that you could assemble an engine without head gaskets and have it run for years without a problem.

On the same note I have seen an engine with 20 main bearings and a 10 crank that ran fine but puked out the rear main. No loose rods. Not a new thing, there was a time in the 80's when GM was selling long block 454 LS6 reproductions and ZZ4 small block 350 over the parts counter. A staggering percentage of those engines, built in Mexico, had problems. The small blocks were foggers, burning more oil than gas and I saw some big blocks with missing bearing shells. The shop I worked at was contracted to tear down the engines to inspect and blueprint before sale. Don't get me started about the Grand National 3.8 turbo; I don't think a single one of those ever made it out of warranty without blowing up! Are these Mopar engines built in Mexico?

I am aware of an airplane engine where a couple of through-bolts were left loose by a previous owner's mechanic. Not quite as bad as leaving out a main bearing, but the through-bolts are important to make sure the bearings and hence the crank main journal is well supported. Happily the manufacturer had a procedure to confirm no damage was done.

I looked on rockauto catalog, and found that the upper bearing for the 6.2 v8 doesn't need the bottom bearing to "cap off" the oil flow. The oil groove doesn't run the entire 180 degrees of the upper bearing, it tapers off before the edges. Maybe it could still function that way for a while?
Wasn't there a time when engines were all splash lubed ? I think having a small amount of oil dropped through the passage would still send oil to the bearings, and would probably let it run for a bit longer than what people are saying. It is not ideal, and would wear out faster, but my understanding is that an oil film would still be present to prevent immediate failure. Especially with the modern oils, it would work its way into the bearing. Also, maybe I am looking at it the wrong way, but that rod bearing looks like it gets "primed" with oil at the bottom of the stroke, and is not getting pressure at top dead center, so at that point, oil pressure is not relevant.

If a main bearing drops out, you loose 100% of all oil pressure.
With that much clearance, and that little oil flow, even on a high performance oil pump system, is enough for the oil pressure to flatline and the whole system lacks enough oil to continue to operate.
At the point one went a couple of miles, it would stick bearings all along the crank and seize up.

Chrysler is not alone, but they might be pushing the envelope for how cheap and failure prone can you make an engine before it disintegrates into a pile of scrap.
