A lot of these gear tackle innovations sort of end up in some shape or form. Getting interpreted by anglers who make baits that are constructed of 'natural' and synthetic hair, foam, mylar strand etc. On the fly fishing side of it. Tommy Lynch's fly 'The Bladerunner' and many of his other inventions. When I had listened to William David explain where his swim jig concept had come from (literally the idea of a jig bait that you reel, as opposed to pitch around). I began to think about Tommy's inventions made of materials light enough to throw with fly rods. In the way one would think about swim jigs.
Looking at the Bladerunner though, in terms of these Walleye and Ice Fishing lures that you mention. It became clear to me too. That something else was in fact at work. In the design of baits like 'The Bladerunner' fly. In that they're obviously looking at that dying baitfish action too. The gliding motion that you mentioned there. Tommy creates flies that come in those larger sizes. Thinking about it though, there are aspects of it's design. That owe things to the swim jig, and to those Walleye baits too.
I do find it funny that the Damiki Rig is kind of a NEW RAGE for bass anglers with forward facing sonar. Whereas growing up outside Detroit, as a kid we vertically jigged walleye on the Detroit River, it was our ONLY TACTIC. I'd say I Damiki Rigged walleye since age 8, forty years ago!
This was pure fan service, thanks for remembering my request for this! Now I gonna apply this to my perch fishing, we don’t have bass in sweden. We tried to establish a population of smallmouth here in the 90’s. They did not survive.
I bought some of these on clearance a couple years ago and didn't know how to fish them. I have plenty of cold water around me to fish. Thanks for the tips, appreciate it!👍
I grew up ice fishing but am now down south. There are a lot of good ice fishing baits and techniques that you can transfer to bass fishing. The Berkley Snap Jig is one I've started using over the past couple of years. It's more flexible than hard bodied darting vertical jigs since you can easily tweak color and size with different trailers. One modification I've tried with it is to turn the trailer sideways so the flatter broader side is facing up - seem to get more gliding and darting that way. Other baits from the ice fishing world I use include Rapala Jigging Shad Raps, Moonshine Shiver Minnows, and Acme Hyper Hammer jigs. Also jigging spoons like the Hopkins Shorty or Swedish Pimples work well in both worlds. Lindy is another manufacturer of baits largely used in the north that can also be used for soft water.
Yes Matt, I've had and got wings! Love wings - hate ice fishing! The Berkeley Snap Jig I've had for years. I carry 1/4 thru 1/2 oz sizes. The 1/2 oz size I use for open water walleye snap jigging. Mentioned it a time or two for bass. If you look at the bottom of the jig it has an eye to attach a stinger hook or spinner or a second bait. NOTE I add a swivel 24" up the line to keep down any twist. Glad you brought this to everyone's attention. Whether for the gut of the river or off shore the lake & impoundment it's great for when the fish have lockjaw. After cold fronts, late fall, winter and early spring. Bass Pro Shops try to keep them on the shelves. The walleye guys tend to snatch'm up in my neck of the woods.
Sorry Matt ! I canot help myself... Very unstable barometric pressure can and will often trump every thing, Including solunar effects. The hidden hand of barometer will Bitch slap all... Ari Hakuseki
I noticed morning bites aren't as productive after full or nearly full moon evenings. I always did better with no moon at night compared to full moons also, though.
This reminds me of a video idea I shared with you a while back, tactics for other species that will SLAY bass. The drop shot, to me, is a "perch rig." The Whopper Plopper was a plug for toothy critters FIRST. I think a lot of beadhead marabou flies for steelhead and salmon are basically "hair jigs" and are AWESOME for bass.
@@MattStefanFishing make sure you save it for the end so people watch longer, lol. I know, because I'm usually always scanning through videos for the underwater shots first. There are so many bass fishing videos to catch up with now. The kids have no idea how good they have it today.
You have to give Berkley credit for the range of plastics and lures. Wish they were made in usa, but it is hard not to pick up Berkley especially as they are in almost every Walmart.
When you have a chance, please take a look at the Fishlab Nature Series Nymph (4.25"). I DON'T think it's a cold water bait. Works best on a Texas rig. In my humble opinion, it combines the attributes of a large aquatic insect with a bait fish. Something bass haven't seen before. Don't know what bass think it is but they are biting it, big time, here in the deep South.
That's a neat idea! I can see where that would work. In the spring I use ice fishing jigs for bed fishing because they have a hook on both ends. That way, they can't just pick it up by the tail and move the bait.
Rapala type ice jig!? Never thought of using it for bedding bass like that because it's so hard and heavy. Sounds like a great stickbait option to have hooks on both ends for bedding bass. Because I always considered it too heavy and snag prone, I figured they'd have trouble sucking it up off the bed.
@@secretbassrigs Take the bottom hook off and just use the front and back hooks. Go as small as you can, because they can be a bit heavy. But they work really well once you take that bottom hook off.
Coincidentally I just ran across the Northland Tackle Rippin' Minnow Jig last week at BPS. It's almost the same exact lure and with the described action I just assumed it's supposed to be mimicking a dying minnow. It seems to attract more pike than bass this time of the year but it's a great lure (I got white and chartreuse/white). I'm sure the Berkley lure is just as good.
Like the breakdown! Sorta similar to a darter head shad/fluke sorta. I do a double pop off the bottom, drag or pendulum it. Has been very productive lately.
Great video. You can get that same gliding action with the deps bull flat rigged on a weighted weedless swim bait hook. I throw the 3 inch size on a 1/8 oz swim bait hook. You get a bait fish profile and when you snap it off the bottom it will dart up and then glide 3 or 4 feet. It’s a great way to imitate a dying bait fish
He did a flipping/punching video like that not too long ago. The fish kept biting the tails off. It had the same action you're describing, but it was Texas rigged.
Using your Mastercard on your entire fishing lure wish list, worth it! Snapping, gliding, and walking the dog underwater with the same lure, "priceless".
Very interesting, when is Berkeley going to come out with the rest of their Rice Krispy Jig series? I can't wait to see their Crackle and Pop versions. The Spine Rig is a better version of this, if you can get away with casting lighter wt. jigs.
@@secretbassrigs How can the (Iaconelli) Spine Rig NOT glide, it's (finish nail) nose weighted, just less so? It's a longer slower glide, more towards an unweighted fluke, but more readily sits on the level. That snap jig falls far faster, I can't believe they are trying to play it off like it's a glider. It's more a plummet-er. Look at the video. In river current you might need that weight to feel the bottom, and then see some more glide out of it. The only thing the Snap Rig has over the Spine Rig, regards the pattern, it has better eyes.
@@richparks1966 because you seem so upset, I'll explain what I know. A weightless fluke basically floats down and will eventually spiral slowly down, nose first. The snap jig is tied at the head and will swing to the side when snapped. Then it drop nose first initially, then glide diagonally when it reaches momentum, with a significantly wider turning radius. It actually has a sideways searching/gliding action on the fall also. The spine rig is nail weighted or neko weighted at the nose. Instead of using standard hooks, it uses a 90° jig hook meant for molding into jig heads (where the bend is normally hidden the head) but is rigged through the back of a swimbait or fluke where the point also sticks out the back. the 90° angle is hidden in the plastic. On a tight line it will search and stay horizontal. But on the drop, it spirals down like any weighted fluke. The "hover rig" is the same exact setup. As far as rewatching the video, he obviously is not showing how it glides underwater. Because that's just how Matt always does it, with all that reflection and glare making it worse, lol.
I use something like this to catch bass by the numbers. Therefore, I concur. No, it is not a fluke or tube. Your technique here isn't fully refined but the concept is very close. You don't need the wings. I do have the wings. You just need to understand sizing. It's the lure and jighead that make all the difference. Been killing it throughout the summer using this technique even in the rocks and boulders.
I don't get it. Your lure has wings? Or it doesn't? Your lure setup is a flat bodied gliding type lure on a lighter jig head? Like back sliding? In deep water?

Randy is a salesman, Matt Stefan to me is an angler that has great promise and a truth about yourself that if you say this works, you can take it to the bank, it does.
I’m sorry to mess up your morning bud, but I would hate to see you fall by the wayside like the other You Tubers, you have too much to offer all of us. Berkley is very lucky to have you as a spokesman, you tell us the truth, but also tell us that the things do not work and don’t waste you money on them. I’m not talking Berkley stuff, they help you feed you and your family but it’s hard for me to take you for your word these times when 5, 6 or 7 lures a week you show are can’t miss lures, there not, some stink.
Thanks for your time Matt, I’m still rooting and cheering you on.
👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
