About 12 I'm also a minimalist and I came from France to the uk to study and didn't buy a lot because they took too much space in suitcases and eventually didn't feel the need to buy more ^^

In Canada I'd need two - a spring/ summer and fall/winter pair. For Summer, Birkenstock Kairo style are my go-to. I've worn my Hunter tall boots even on the coldest, snowiest days (rubber cracked after 6 years though, so don't do that!). Love both because they take seconds to put on and take off and are so comfortable.

I have 11 pairs of footwear total, all very good quality, and I budget each season (twice a year) to replace anything that is worn out, so I buy maybe one or two pairs a year, but not always. Three years ago I got a great pair of Castañer wedges which have been so comfortable and stylish for summer wear and is looking as good as new. My one addition this year has been a pair of Veja trainers (I'm actively looking for sustainable brands). One newer trend for me is to go for lower heeled shoes, not stilettos, that can be worn comfortably all day. If I had to keep one pair it would be my pair of black leather ballerinas from Peter Kaiser - they have a slight heel which is a little smarter than totally flat soles, and an elongated toe which makes a super elegant foot. I'd like to try Spanish brand Chie Mihara which although very quirky are well designed to support the foot.

Sandals have a short span since winter is so long here. And, obviously, I have everything in between sandals to winter boots (6 total). I mostly wear ballet flats, and only one pair would be my black patent Pretty Ballerina's. They are pricey, but I love them.

    Great video.
The recurring themes I hear are..
    1. Buy what you love

To everyone who feels like it's hard to part with clothes and shoes:I'm like that too. But once you get rid of them, you won't even remember you had them. You won't miss them at all because you don't wear them anyway. If it's a really pretty dress, just make a photo of it and get rid of it

I keep a donate bin in my closet that I add items to. After 6 months, if I haven't needed to grab something out of it I donate the contents. Most of the time I realize if I do need an item from it, I would prefer to invest in a higher quality version of that item. For example I have gotten rid of multiple pairs of cheap sandals and am down to two pairs of sandals that have different purposes (dressy vs casual).

"I want shoes that I can wear, realistically, in my everyday life" THANK YOU!!!!! I struggle so much to find quality shoes, that I can wear everyday, without destroying my feet, and that will look good. And so many people keep pushing me toward, sky high heels, uncomfortable, "glam" shoes that I could never wear in the real world.

  • @MySelflessLove
    @MySelflessLove 3 роки тому +20

Whenever I declutter my wardrobe or shoe collection, I go by this rule: if I haven't worn it (or worn it only few times) in the past 6 months to 1 year, it needs to go. I live in a country with four seasons so naturally I don't wear some coats and boots for one half of the year, but if it has been more than that, then really it means I either don't really like them or they're uncomfortable but I just don't want to admit that.
While you said our taste and lifestyle might change over the years, a good thing to consider when buying anything really, is the fact that as adults we might keep the thing forever. Over the last year or two I have kept this in mind and tried to invest in good clothes and shoes so they can last me a lifetime.
Thank you for the video! I don't comment often but I enjoy every single one of your videos. I really appreciate that you keep them informative and stick to the point instead of blabbering nonsense.

I also grew up in a shoe store, my Dad had 3 family shoe stores. I sold shoes at Kenneth Cole while going to college in NYC. I curated my shoe collection in my 40's and stopped wearing shoes that weren't comfortable anymore. Being a classroom teacher also made the process easier; I couldn't stand on my feet and go up and down stairs all day in pointy pumps. I have about 20 pairs of shoes and 4 pairs of cowboy boots that I have polished and repaired for years. I remember one of my boyfriends being very impressed that I had my own shoe shine kit. I wear all of them :) Love from NYC xoxogena

So, I've discovered barefoot shoes about a year ago. and after buying myself a pair of vivo's I just couldn't go back to normal shoes. the comfort is just incomparable. Then this winter while ordering my second pair of barefoot shoes, handmade, I got to realise I have always (over 15 years!!!!) been wearing shoes that were too small. because with ballerina type of shoes you need to scrunch your toes so that it would hold (especially with thin feet like me).
So now I'm down to 3 pairs of minimal shoes. and I am slowly replacing my old collection but don't aim at having more than 6 pairs. and no heels ever again for me! freeedooommmm.

My dad sold shoes when I was a kid, and working in a shoe shop on Canal Street, New Orleans, was my very first job. I have a Pinterest board called "Shoes are My Thang." I have memories of shoes dating back to the 1960s. To say I have a relationship with my shoe collection is probably an understatement! However I'm also a minimalist and, at age 62, have whittled my collection down to 30 pairs recently. There are still probably half a dozen I don't wear. Am mustering up the courage to donate them (they're good shoes, would sell well in a re-sale shop).

I get most of my shoes secondhand and am constantly decluttering every quarter of the year. It’s the only way I can maintain a useful and working wardrobe while being authentic to who I am. I’m not a minimalist but I also don’t want to hoard things that no longer serve me. During quarantine, I got rid of about 10+ pairs of shoes. Plus lots of clothes and some purses or accessories. I donated some things but sold a good number of items using a Sell by Mail bag from Buffalo Exchange, that donates anything they don’t pick for buying. I used to take all my clothes and spend an afternoon hitting up 3 resale shops nearby in NYC. Was usually able to sell 75% of my discards, make roughly $250 and donated the remaining items all before returning home. I used to do eBay but these days I reserve that for higher end items because it’s just too much work for me. Now that I’ve been selling by mail, even with a lower payout, it might become my new way to get rid of my discarded wardrobe items. Hope everyone else gets the same kind of joy I get from clearing out their wardrobe. Less is more!

I have 16 pairs that I wear regularly, and another 16-20 that I keep in translucent boxes at the top of my closet that are out of season or for special occasions. I wear heels so rarely, but they are good to have when you need them. The right shoes can really make an outfit. And I switch out some of my shoes by season - fall/winter and spring/summer, just like I do some of my clothes.

100 pairs of shoes 😮 good luck with decluttering. When I declater I use some categories e.g. : 1. classic? (Black, beige, pink, blue, grey (my color analysis) etc match to most of my clothes?) 2. Ocassion: elegant (wedding, funeral, job interview etc), to work, on date, daily, sport/fitness, to garden etc I've written on paper all possible categories and It is needed to match to season year ? 3. Demaged or not? If demaged but it can be useful it could be fix in a shoe maker? 4. Comfortable or not? If not there is no sense to leave it at home. 5. Fast fashion - Is still trendy? 6. Is good quality? In my opinion 20 pairs of shoes (ok 30 ;)) - of excellent quality is enough of all categories. Thanks to Justine Leconte I know which colors are fitted to me, which shape I have and I made capsule wordrobe 2 years ago and I m so happy of my garderobe that is useful, ecological and ethical (due to not following fast fashion trends). Minimalism is a life on your own - Thank you Justine! :)

Bonjour Justine! I LOVE the colourful flats and the golden wedges, they are sooooo amazing. I had to get rid of two pairs last year, and I almost cried. They were well made, stylish, comfortable, but after almost ten years of wear and multiple repairs they had holes... I just stared at them, and it took me months before I finally threw them in the garbage 😂. My ex husband is the person that made me realize in my twenties that good quality shoes are not only more comfortable but also elevate any modest outfit. I never went back after that, and I have loved my small shoe collection with a passion. When it comes to footwear I know I will NEVER be a minimalist. I have shoes in my collection that I have had since I was a teenager! I have actually lost count of the number of pairs I have ... My father is a shoe manufacturer so I have some really unique pairs that I have kept for sentimental reasons. Also when I find a style that I like I get them in multiple colours. I no longer wear high heeled sandals or court shoes since having ankle surgery several years ago but can't bring myself to part with most of them. I have decluttered about 15 pairs that I know I wouldn't want to wear again if my ankle situation ever resolves ... only another 60+ pairs (not including sneakers) to go.

I own 37 pairs of shoes. Pretty sure I could de-clutter by around half. There are 5 pairs that I wear regularly. If I could keep only one pair I'd keep the silver mesh lace-up flats, they comfortable, beautiful and versatile, though a bit chilly for going outside in the winter (writing from New Zealand).
I really appreciate your thoughtful approach to wardrobe and style, and agree that our style continues to evolve. I hope other people will be able to re-use my unwanted shoes as their style evolves, too.
As far as fashion is concerned I agree with you about owning go-with-everything shoes and currently have some silver flats which are especially handy, and silver platform heels. I saw some beautiful silver mid-heel shoes online and will probably need to add those to my collection once there's a bit of space in my cupboard.

I personally don't feel that this year is giving a true reflection of the wear I get out of most of the footwear I own. Until I had a foot operation a couple of years ago I had never owned any trainers, but was told to buy some by my consultant to wear in the first months of recovery. This meant I couldn't wear my usual sandals and wedges that year, though by winter I was able to fit into my boots again. Then this year came Covid and I haven't really been leaving the house except for walks across fields, so out came the trainers again! I am longing to be back in espadrilles, flats and sandals but my life is just so different from normal that I feel most of my shoes will stay gathering dust in my wardrobe! Hopefully next year will be better, with a chance of a more normal lifestyle.
In more normal times, if I could only keep 1 pair, it would have to be espadrilles in summer and ankle boots for the winter - and if you were really making me choose just one, then the boots would win.

You always inspire me to be more conscious of what I buy. I only have 2 pairs of shoes that I almost never wear - they are formal evening shoes, one pair of sandals and one pair of closed shoes, both in a very classic style. I rarely have occasion for such shoes but I will keep them anyway. I have developed plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the foot muscle) so I cannot wear my high heels and wedges anymore. I couldn't bear to part with them but after watching your videos I decided to let them go to someone who will enjoy them and rather invest in shoes that look nice too - but don't kill my feet! Slowly building a nice collection of shoes that go with everything! Thanks, Justine!

I've decluttered my shoe closet 2 weeks ago. I guess it was more than 40 pairs that had to go, that's about 30% of the total amount. This time I waited until I was in a "decision mode" and put myself into the perspective of an other person to let go all the ones that weren't me anymore, the ones that were "nice, but..." , the uncomfortable ones, the ones that didn't reflect "quality" or the ones I wouldn't miss once they're out of sight. The remaining rest feels good and stays matched in colors in containers with photos on the outside - my guests are in awe when they see this organization system. :-)))

Informative video, Justine. Thanks! For years I had just enough shoes to get by--a pair of light brown sandals, a pair of sandals for water hikes, one pair of tall black boots, one pair of brown shoes, one pair of sport shoes, and one pair of black shoes. I wasn't a minimalist, but money was tight when I was raising children. Now that they're grown, I've allowed myself to have shoes that make me happy. I've added black sandals, red sandals, red short boots, blue sandals, blue closed shoes, short black boots, casual brown boots, and 2 pairs of sport shoes for dancing. Except for the sport shoes, I buy all my shoes from a local company that makes very comfortable, supportive shoes. I don't buy cheaply made shoes anymore. The company I buy from is called Kaya.

For white sneakers I recommend the french brand Veja, I don't know if someone mentioned it already. I've had mine for a year, took good care of them and they literally look like when I got them, zero damage. Comfortable as hell, and the brand is known for being a more sustainable alternative to classic sneakers, and have some lovely vegan options. Super trendy at the moment as well, apparently!
As for my own shoe collection, I do have some shoes that haven't made it out of the closet in a couple of months, but I'm still reluctant to donate or sell them, because I know that my opinion towards them fluctuates. I have periods where I get a lot of wear out of them, and some where they don't spark excitement. But I keep them for the good wear moments, especially because they're timeless and great quality!

Merci, Justine! What a pleasure to wake up to a Justine video, & it's about shoes. I mourn your red ballerinas, & though I love the multicolor flats you replaced them with, I think all who can afford it need at least one pair of red shoes. And your Peter Pan boots! So cute, & I hope you find them. When I went to my closet to count my shoes, I realized that this isn't a great time for me to be too strict about which pairs I still wear, because I've been sheltering inside since March. I mostly wear house slippers, then sandals or sneakers when I go to the market. So if I kept only the shoes I'm wearing regularly, I'd have two pair, maybe 3. Like you, I take very good care of my shoes, & when I love a pair, I wear them until they fall apart. Inspired by your last shoe video, I've already culled lots of shoes from my wardrobe, so for now, I think I'll leave my "will I ever wear these office shoes again?" in the closet. For at least a little while longer. Excellent collection of new shoes, btw. Just beautiful. Still, hoping you find those Peter Pans as well!

Of course I have a few pairs that I favor but I don't allow myself to wear any one pair too often. Some of my favorites are a pair of Praerie pointy toe loafer (very pointy) and a pair of slouchy Steve Madden (banddit) combat boots. I do regularly donate or sell what I don't wear anymore. I have a pair of running shoes that the toe on my right foot is coming through, a pair of expensive, comfortable high black boots (4? yrs old), and this spring I bought a replacement pair of sandals for the pair that was worn through and falling apart (new ones expensive), and also a pair of red sandals that are more dressy (also expensive, but I got on a going-out-of-business sale). The only other shoes I have, and seldom wear, is two pairs of short heels, one tan, one black, that just aren't as stable as I'd like when I walk. That's it. Loved the video, Justine.

My weather makes it so that I need 1 winter pair and 1 summer sandal. Very easy. I usually wear my shoes out and don’t like having to throw them away but they aren’t fit to donate by time I’m done with them. Justine! Even something already wise and golden like you measure over the years, and it's been a real pleasure to watch that process! I have a few pair of really good name brand shoes (Burberry, Chloe, Prada, Valentino), made from real leather, which I have had for many years. I no longer buy leather for ethical reasons, but I've got to admit that real leather wears better in the long run, ages better and definitely lasts longer, with lambskin and goat skin being the most comfortable options to wear. I love wearing them but will have a very hard time justifying another pair like those, being made from real leather. Hopefully the five pairs that I've got will last forever, or can be repaired and still look good. What gives me hope, that being kind to animals doesn't mean compromising comfort, is the pineapple leather. Maybe ethical/vegan shoe designing could be your next project, Justine! I would definitely buy from you.

    I have:
    1. two black pumps for concerts (low heel and stiletto).
    2. 3 pairs of white sneakers (low top, high top and light summer-canvas one). Different tops work variously with different length of my bottoms.
    3. 3 pairs of fun sneakers (with pale pink pattern, yellow one and grey-black one). Pop of color helps to support other colors in my outfit.
    4. 3 pairs of block heel open-toe mules (grey, white, black). Mules are my love! This aesthetic is just beautiful.
    5. 3 pairs of block heel closed-toed mules (beige, brown, mustard-yellow). 😍
    6. 3 pairs of flat sandals (brown with a fun striped bow-ties, platform brown and black slides)
    7. 3 pairs of chic heel sandals (mid heel dark brown, gold stiletto and white stiletto)
    8. 1 pair of beautiful navy blue espadrilles
    9. 1 pair of dusty pink slippers
    10. 2 pairs of high boots (brown and grey)
    11. 2 pairs of ankle boots (brown and black)
    12. 3 pairs of winter fur boots (beige, burgundy and olive)
    13. 1 pair of chic off-white kitten heel ankle boots
Let me mention that I live in a place where for 7 months is warm (from 20-35 Celsius).

I basically haven't worn shoes in the last 6 months... I live in Brazil and I am bare footed when inside practically 100% of the time.
Having said that... I bought a pair of white leather sneakers and a pair of red sneakers this year. I've been wanting a red pair of comfy shoes for many many months and decided it was a need. Today I definitely feel I put comfort first. I don't even own any high heels anymore. 🤷🏽‍♀️ And I definitely only keep shoes I actually wear.
Unfortunately I can't say I purchase only the best quality shoes ever because I can't afford it if I'm being honest. But you know... Goals, right?

For some years I thought I had to be a minimalist and reduce everything... but then I decided I have my permission to have many different shoes if they bring me joy :) I love having options and often have multiple versions of things i love, for example, I have many different thigh high boots in black (different heel hights, textures like patent, leather, snake print etc. and heel shapes like stiletto, flat, block heel etc. so I am prepared for every occasion from casual to office to date and don't have to think about it. Also, they won't wear out as fast if they get rotated. If I can t change, I really get bored. But I try to make sure to wear everything each season.
Sometimes I store things I am bored with for a year or so and then it is like opening a treasure box again and I fall back in love. I guess everyone needs to find what works best for them.

I am a natural "capsule wardrobe" person. having special pieces that mix and match. if I could only keep one pair??? hmmm good question. either my green velvet combat boots or my knee high brown leather boots. I love your channel. have you ever thought about doing a video about a seated body? My choices in what I wear needed adjusting when I became a quadriplegic, and still have fun as I always have with what I wear. much love, Connie

previously, I have around 20 pairs a mix of high shoes, stiletto and high heels sandals, but since my pregnancy 5 years ago, and get worsen by my ACL injury and post op, I'm only able to wear flat-cushioned shoes a.k.a sneakers/ running shoes. Some of my heels collections were given to my cousin who is a banker. Marie Kondo is absolutely right, when we cleared up things that we are seldom/never wear, and giving them to other, I'm getting double joy, it gives me the extra spaces and happiness bcoz the shoes are useful and make my cousin look pretty.

Thank you Justine, I am not a big shopper but you have really given me purpose when I do shop. I have curated my shoe collection recently, and lost weight and OMG my feet got smaller. So I sold those shoes. I think I have 20 pairs of shoes. Half are dressy shoes that go with South Asian clothes and Western Gowns, the other half I can wear for 12 hrs at work. I grieve COVID cause I haven't worn my dressy shoes, gowns, or make-up since February really.

This is fantastic! It is refreshing to see a content creator that filters information properly, focusing on a more smart way to buy new items and spend hard earned money wisely.

1 pair, and also 10% of my closet. I tried to be minimalistic about my closet and shoes about 3 years ago, which’s also when I started to watch ur videos. Great content and very inspirational! Thank u so much🥰🥰
