Watching your videos with your lovely smile, smooth voice and competent guidance in colours, texture etc have saved me and guided me back to style!

I feel the same way about Justine. I had some difficult years with my job and going to grad school. Eventually, life became settled and comfortable for me, but I had a crammed wardrobe with nothing to wear. Justine inspired me. I find her to be knowledgeable and sophisticated without being pretentious. I was able to clear out my wardrobe and buy contemporary piece that work very well for me. It's fun to get dressed, I feel much more confident in my appearance. Thank you Justine!!

Can you make a video about monochromatic clothes and a more colour conservative styles(styles with fewer or no patterns)? There are many common misconceptions about needing pattern, to not look funeral/office like.

evgenia you can add texture if you don’t wave patterns for monochromatic looks . I often dress monochromatic. I might wear different fabrics hence textures and shades of the same colour . I only ever wear small prints . Cheers

Wear one bright spot. Like a red top or belt, an unique pin (not big, but interesting). Or classy blouses or shirts with superior lace or tailoring touches. I like to keep the accessories minimal too, as I do not like to wear much jewelry or scarves, but the key would be to invest in a few pieces of the highest quality fabric and construction. If you want to stay monochromatic, go for weave, texture, best quality you can afford. Then people don't notice monochromatic, they notice good taste.
I'm sure Ms. Leconte has covered this in previous videos, but stated it much better.

Fascinating topic. I wear white all year round - wouldn’t even like to count how many white t-shirts, but also dresses, skirts, pants, winter white jumpers and, what I now know, are white-dominant patterns. I much prefer white to black any time and I think I likely wear it every day. I’ve never questioned how to wear it before because I’ve always thought it goes with everything and suits everyone and every occasion, but I have thought for a while I am neutral toned so maybe that’s why. Where I live Labor Day is March and while it’s the end of summer, the first months of autumn are typically hot but I’ve only ever heard that rule on Friends. Really interesting.

Yes, in the US if you dare to wear white after September you have to be prepared for snarky comments, finger pointing, double takes and bug eyed glares! In 2018 the white (some cool tones) bootie, shoe, foot wear was worn in winter, my how the style "establishment" did not approve. Those of you taking notes white foot wear is only first legal on Easter. But not prior to. We have rules! You must obey! (PHOOEY! Be your own kind of beauty! In any shade you desire!) Congrats Justine you so deserve all the accolades and kudos coming your way! XO

This video made me smile! It’s very much a French thing to wear white jeans. If you’ve ever vacationed in France in the summer or with French people (even French Canadians) they are usually easy to spot because they’re the ones wearing white jeans. I did like the warm vs cool explanation about being washed out.

Oh Justine you are so right about wearing the right white for your skin tone! So few people know this let alone ever say it. If I wear a yellow toned, ivory, creamy white I look as sick as a dog. But a crisp, blue toned snowy white looks lovely on me and makes every other [jewel] colour I wear pop. I learned the hard way....

As a full figured, older American woman, who also is a bit tomboyish i.e., standard jeans and tee shirts, I find white difficult. But I own items such as a floral pant that is primarily red with white sprinkled in which has other colors and allows me to wear multiple tops. I own white jeans but reserve them for vacations, date nights etc. and rarely do I pair it with a white top, although when I have, adding a flowy shawl or open front tunic/cardigan cut all that matchy-matchy whiteness you mentioned. Great post and congratulations on your numbers.

Hi Justine, I’m an avid fan from Ethiopia 🇪🇹 (that’s in the Horn of Africa). In most of the northern parts, which are also highlands and generally cooler, white is the base for all traditional cultural outfits-but the hems, cuffs and collars are always adorned with colorful patterns specific to a region.
White was so common, that when one city first made use of mass produced textiles (for some reason the very first were dark green) others thought it was in mourning.
Of course, nowadays you barely see white anymore-except around holidays and at weddings.
So it has become a festive color, like the western Christmas red and green.

I wore white this summer, I was inspired by your videos on finding your personal style for your body type and building a capsule wardrobe. Our summers are brutally hot and humid. It was perfect. I did add color via my shoes and paired it with my bag. Mostly, white in my culture is for going to church (serving during mass) or funerals. I had to be careful I solved this problem by either mixing textures or wearing bold earrings, or colorful shoes matching with my bag. And a bright red lip.

It was very plain, just a straight denim dress below knee, with a stand collar and front placket, nearly calf level, with wooden buttons. I used light blue thread for the top stitching. The history behind "no white after Labour Day" goes back to the past when wealthy Americans spent their summer out of town in cottages. And usually they came back to the cities right after Labour day. Of course their summer clothes was packed in suits or left in cottages and never worn again until next summer. That is what i red. 😉 Now, here in Canada and US, the rule doesnt really apply anymore.

My complexion is extremely pale. Therefore, I avoid white--even warm white--as it washes me out. Ivory and cream, however, work well as does a pale warm gray. I have come to like that my summer wardrobe is more distinctive as a result. I can also enjoy a warm "white" if it's blended into a pattern but isn't the dominant colour such as narrow, white striped t-shirts. My amazing wedding dress was ivory/cream with sequins to catch the light and add glow.

you just solved my long time problem with white. I love white as a colour but never really looked at the shade and now I realized whenever I wear warm white it makes me so pale like a dead body, but cool white looks super on me! Thanks Justine!

In my culture, if you wear all white, it seems as if it’s meant for a funeral or mourning, so it would be a good idea to introduce a pattern, print or embroidery, some extra colours- bolder is better (think red or black) but any dark or bright colours work, some statement accessories work too, makeup could also make it more upbeat for instance a bright lip, or shimmery eyes. Basically anything to add a pop of colour or a dazzling shine, and reduce the overall “gloominess” of the look. It would also help if the cut and make of the outfit was interesting and fun rather than plain and simple.

Happy to hear that the "no white after Labor Day" rule is not a rule. I don't wear white shoes or handbags after September, but white is sort of universal, in my opinion. Love your discussions of fashion items and rules, and mostly appreciate how you educate us all about what makes a good, long-lasting fashion investment. I have found handbags that cost me 1/4 the "name" brands, just based on the tips you give us on what makes a good bag. In this video, learning that varying shades of white --especially with patterns --can allow you to wear your white pieces long after the "official" end of summer, makes the most sense I have seen or heard. Besides, adding a sweater, even a shawl, of a different color, breaks the "all white" color scheme, right?

White is used to signify death in Hindu culture but we wear cream and gold in a South Indian state as a staple on occasions. It’s so interesting to know about colors around the world. Thank you for making informative content.

I love white all white (just not ice-cool), in the summer. Im not scared of the Sun :) so I get a bit of tan, and white is the best for me. In our culture : white is a bride's color, but its also just a happy color. Thank You very much for all the wonderful, awesome, inspirational content, please never stay away for long😍 Much Love from Belgrade,Serbia! 💜💜💜

I have a neutral leaning warm. Sometimes I can get away with cool whites during winter but during summer when I tan warm whites look the best with my complexion. Unfortunately, warm whites are really hard to find most of the time.

    • @sandraaylward691
      @sandraaylward691 5 років тому

Zarina Emerson I agree that warm whites are harder to find (without going to beige!) especially jeans. I am still looking, but in the meantime I do wear the " neutral" white jeans (I.e. Not "blue" white) that I have found and I would wear a warmer white on top. I think it's ok to mix a warm or cool white with a neutral white in an outfit...just not warm/cool together.

I love your channel, Justine! According to Miss Manners, official American etiquette is that white shoes should only be worn between Memorial Day (end of May) and Labor Day (beginning September). However, I usually stretch the start date to Spring Break, Easter, or the spring equinox, because I feel that white gives off strong springtime vibes (lilies, bunnies, eggs...). Plus it’s typically very warm-extremely hot where I live, from April-October...

I have several white clothes in my wardrobe and I typically wear them with golden jewellery (I prefer gold over silver) and some coloured accent accessory like red nails (or any other bright and loud summer colour), or a colourful handbag, red/pinky lips etc. In my opinion that never looks boring or bridal. :)

I am from Canada and we have two labor days: one in May and one in September. We wear white in between these dates -loosely! However, I did live in Texas for 12 years and the rules in the South are written in stone. They too have a May and September labour day but white and linen can be worn before the May labour day but NEVER after the September one. They have a “Turn or burn” philosophy on these issues, or so I discovered! Such fun!

I live in southwest Florida where we have no spring or fall and "winter" is from mid December - mid February . White is worn pretty much year round in this area. Maybe not as often in the winter months, but I don't have seasonal wardrobes other than keeping a few sweaters tucked away for a cold spell.

Thank you for another video. Yours are always very enjoyable and informative. Take care!

I agree with you about wearing white in September. Although it is officially "fall", it feels like summer in Spain. It is as hot as summer and weather is warm in October too. We keep wearing white clothes and shirts/T-shirts without sleeves.

Good tips! I personally don't wear white (it is too high-maintenance for cleaning and can show undergarments if they don't match your skin tone) or light colors, but think light gray/silver is a good compromise. It has the freshness of white, but shows fewer stains and is less labor- and product-intensive to clean.

Hello Justine, just found your channel this morning. The information about cool white versus warm white was appreciated. You mentioned the old idea about not wearing white after Labor Day. Well, when I was growing up in GB we had a rule about never wearing anything sparkly during daylight hours! I wonder how many people remember this rule and still abide by it?

As a warm skinned male, I can wear cool white shirts when summer arrives and my face gets a little more color in it. That is the white shirt color that I actually prefer. I have white linen shirts; so classic! In winter time I wear a creamy white shirt, teetering on beige.

Our winters have been colder the last couple of years, but nothing like or as long as the north.
