I'd love to see you compare and contrast the style of Emily (who is brand new to Paris), with Mindy (who is a foreigner with more understanding of Paris, having lived there longer) and Camille (who is French and moved to Paris)!
Ah yes... I was wondering about Mindy too. Then there's Sylvie vs. Madeline from Chicago! (Au pairs are not usually middle aged. That was odd... maybe another little subtle joke... about an American getting it wrong??)
YES I would love to have you talk about Sylvie and her style. The way she uses hemlines and waistline is fascinating, her "age appropriate" outfits and even underwear. There is a lot to talk about!
Would love to see analysis of fashion though decades from limited series “Queen’s Gambit.” The wardrobe was so elevated in that show. Would love to know if period and globally accurate as she travels a lot internationally for chess (Russia, Paris, Mexico).
Her style evolution also involves a key difference in her hair as an emotional component. She is styled in a way that is overtly reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn. This choice reflects the young woman discovering herself in a big city storyline just as Hepburn's characters often did. The pinned back looks, bobs, and shaping are all variations of Funny Face and other films of the time.
"Emily in Paris" is my guilty pleasure show. I never cared about how unrealistic the budget of her closet is because it's obviously fiction, but how unrealistic her style is for literally any place or occasion?? In the first season I only really liked her cocktail and evening looks, and only two of her work outfits (the yellow with black ensemble and that jeans-poloshirt-checkered blazer combo you mentioned in the video) seemed appropriate to me. Season two was kinda similar. But in the third season her style really did seem to change for the better. Less flashy, less screaming, a bit more professional and tailored, longer cuts, more muted colours. Ans she still looks very youthful in those clothes without being all over the place. As much as season 3 was a disappointment to me regarding the plot and character and lines development, I would venture that this season is the best if we talk about Emily's sartorial choices. Fantastic review as always, Justine!
It’s so nice to be guided by a fashion designer on how to spot the progression and integration of American to French style. I guess once you live in a different county you pick up their style whether for necessity or not. But this is a nice practice to spot for when watching shows. Haven’t gotten to season 3 yet, but soon will. Happy holidays, J. See you next year 😊
Interesting video. I honestly wouldn't have picked out those subtle differences. To me, Emily is always trendy. What was weird for me in season 3 was: I felt like they were dressing Sylive - the boss - more like Emily! Meaning, more trendy, and avant garde as opposed to the classic/femme fatale thing she had going on in previous seasons. It struck a wrong note for me. Did you notice this?
Yeah, I thought that too. So many garish metallic garments (shoes, trousers, etc) which I have never seen Parisians wear, and personally don't find them attractive. I feel that some of those items would be too kitsch for Parisians, even the ones working in high fashion.
I noticed that too!! Maybe it’s a reflection of how Emily is rubbing off on her since we can see that Sylvie is beginning to like and trust Emily more and more
@@dejavu011 I agree - Season 3 was full of over the top metallic, sequined, fluoro and mesh fabrics - often worn by all three - Emily, Mindy and Sylvie and often totally out of place for the type of event or place they were in.
I loved your analysis of the fashion elements of EIP. I would certainly watch other such reviews of movies and television programs, so well researched and very interesting. Thank you Justine.
Indeed, Emily's outfits in season 3 made me cringe far less than they did in previous seasons. It was funny to see the difference between her and her American boss, who probably deserves an outfit review of her own :D I would love to see your take on fashion in any Korean series, but that would be a rather time-consuming endeavour, so don't have the conscience to request it. Happy new year!
Please review Gossip Girl... The original show! I believe their wardrobe choices are textbook examples of classic and chic. Everything the main cast wears is as beautiful as elegant...both Blair and Sarena are incomparable. I never seen any tv show or movie that is this much beautiful.
I found season 3 wardrobe choices followed closely what's happening on the runway. There were a lot of looks straight from the latest AW22-23 that aligns with filming timelines. I adore all the Schiaparelli dresses and suits they included, Christian Siriano graphic suits, Pucci, and i think the blue swirly print dress may be by Paula Canovass Del Vas(?). It was a treat for the eyes! Patricia Field really did a great job making wardrobe play a part in the show :D
I’d love a review on Camilles style. Especially in season 3 she wore a neon green jacket that I found very peculiar and out of her style! Thank you for the fashion reviews, you’re always on point! Merry Christmas!❤
Thank you for being natural, authentic, well thought out, informative, creative and inspiring force online that never failed to deliver and never compromised the quality and the integrity. You are lovely. Merry Christmas, wishing you all the very best! XO
A great example of a timeless classic style is Blair Waldorf in gossip girl. No matter the time period: her sense of style is always iconic and delivers perfectly what kind of character she is.
I have no interest in watching this show but every interest in your analysis of the wardrobe and styling 😂 great video. Thank you Justine. Have a good holiday!
Same! I have never seen the show but love your fashion and also cultural analyses of it! From a fashion perspective, I don’t particularly like the unrealistic notion that everything has come so easily to Emily - it sets unattainable expectations and for the viewers too.
Your multilevel analysis of Emily in Paris was SO interesting! Loved it. Would love to see other series or movies analyzed through your professional eye!!
Justine, would you please review Sylvie Grateau's outfits in Emily in Paris? I would love to see you break down why those outfits work so well and look so stylish, chic and timeless.
Thank you for this. I enjoyed watching the story of the amazing Mrs Maisal , the story and the clothing the characters wore to communicate their place in the society would you say? Would you be interested in going back in time and commenting on how style and fashion reflected social and political/ economic times.
Great analysis! I spent a month in Paris last October, and learned much. For one thing, the tourists outnumber the Parisian locals. The locals are easy to spot. They are the ones barley making ends meet in an expensive city, and they are wearing black, brown, creams, mostly understated clothing, but of higher quality fabrics and classic styles that don't go out of date, perhaps worn in interesting combinations to make the outfits current. I found the 20 to 40-something aged men to be the most interesting, as they sported the pencil cut pants and form fitted blazers, and looked quite current. The older men looked amazing in old clothes, but all classics paired well. Just gorgeous. As for the expensive brands and haute couture, I didn't see logos on the average person, and the crazy expensive clothing and labels being purchased were by the tourists who think this is what Paris is. Ironically, this is not Paris to me at all. The Paris I fell in love with is the food, the working people, the iconic landmarks, the walkable history....I could go on and on. For a city that is known for fashion, the stuff sold on the runway is all "the Emperor's New Clothes". Paris' iconic fashion is on it's average citizen. Although it was fun to spot the intermittent "Cookie Monster" coat (the oversized fur) on the streets when it was cold outside.
Happy Holidays! Personally, I’d like to see more videos like this. I notice fashions in TV shows and movies a lot. (Also window treatments! I worked in that department at JCPenneys, and spot many of one’s that were sold there). I found that a lot fashion wise and with hairstyles, was reflected in the daytime soap operas. The differences between the east and west coasts of the USA and, after moving to upstate New York, realizing it took 3 years for the trends to become popular there! Surprising for me. There was a movie portraying the 1970’s, which, unfortunately, I can’t think of the title, that seemed to portray the mens fashion’s well like plaid bell bottoms. Having been in my 20’s throughout the 70’s, I found the women’s fashion’s disconcerting! They were portrayed with a LOT of skin showing. I don’t remember that at all, and I’m from NYC!
I think one of the challenges of costume design for movies/TV is making them appealing to modern audiences while also conveying the era in which they are set. One designer for the film 13 Going on 30 said that it was difficult to come up with outfits for middle school girls in the 1980's that both looked distinctly '80's but still signaled to viewers that these were the cool girls. Would definitely be fun to hear more of Justine's thoughts on this topic!
Would love it if you discussed your thoughts on the wardrobes of Cher in Clueless or Elle in Legally Blonde! Great video will check out your other Emily videos too
I love your reviews, you really pay attention to the details! One thing I always think about the show, Emily's fashion is not meant to make her be 'realistic' or 'blend into the background', it's made to make her stand out in most cases, as someone in a new country and the main character, that makes sense, plus it does give the viewers something to discuss and debate about!
Emily's colour palette in Season 3 incorporated more warm and natural hues (lots of orange) paired with her signature darker lipstick (in a muted brown-rust hue)... and of course her signature berry when wearing her more typical cooler palette..
My favourite outfit of Emily's so far is the season 3 blue trouser, Breton strip top, and checked blazer. The cut is much more sophisticated, but the bright colours still represent the character.
One thing I noticed in season 3 is that the outfit sometimes does not match with the weather/ season. For example, the episode where the heat is turned off in the building: Madeleine mentions that it is summer and it is not normal that the heat is on etc. In this episode, Emily wears boots!! Who would ever wear boots on a hot Summer day in Paris? 🧐
Please do one with gilmore girls, loralai gimlore specifically. She has a very timeless fashion and even after watching the show decades after its release, it's still looks good.
Happy holidays to you too Justine! Also, yes I personally love your TV show fashion review, maybe you could do another one that centers in Paris too? Maybe like Lupin? Also animation/animation shows probably would be interesting too to review
Yes, please, more videos like this one, style evolution of characters. Even though I am in my 60s, I love watching shows that make fashion another story character, this includes the male characters as well. I love the Julien (Samuel Arnold) character's costumes - so beautiful.
Fashions in S3 were a combo of fun, outlandish, garrish, inspired, chic, kooky, sexy. Emily was less a skin show than Sylvie and Mindy. I loved the houndstooth look she wore at the house warming party ✨ I agree that her income could not have supported her fab wardrobe at all. Sidenote: nothing wrong with wearing a hat if you like. I have all the beautiful caps my late Father wore.
I loved Emily's eclectic style and the show has revived my interest in fashion. I would appreciate your insight on Sylvie's wardrobe and how older French women dress. Specifically, beyond classic color palettes, patterns and fabrics, what are some popular clothing and accessory fashion trends for women age 50+ in Paris (or in France, outside Paris)?
I enjoy the show, with Emily’s crazy outfits, but am looking forward to her style evolving to a more elegant, simple, French one. Thanks for your analyses, they’re fun, too! I didn’t know Season 3 was up yet, I’ll check it out.
Hi Justine, Have followed you since 2018 or so...your channel has been my go-to guide for fashion. Thank you for explaining things so simply and effectively, while making fashion accessible. Please do some reviews from period dramas like Downtown Abbey. It spans across a couple of years and we would get a lot of insight =) Happy 2023!
I love Emily in Paris because of the fantasy element to the fashion and styling. Obviously no one would wear this outfits to work or walk the street in stiletto heels. If it was reality, no one would watch :) Even more interesting than Emily's outfits to me are her boss, Sylvie's style. I love that the creators break moulds and stereotypes by putting a middle age women in some very sexy and out there clothes. I love that! Maybe you can do a review on her style? Loved the video, Thank you and Merry Xmas.
@Trinity M but they’re never fully real life, a lot of drama and action is added. Most of the time real lives are a lot calmer, and more boring to watch. Shows can be realistic, but they’re never actual reality.
Yesss, I would love to watch more such videos! Have you watched the Marvelous Mrs Maisel? Also, someone pointed out the compare & contrast bw Emily, Camille, & Mindy
Merci, Justine! I don't think I've seen season 3 of this show, but after this I'll go over to Netflix & see if I missed it. I watch Emily mostly for the costumes & settings, so your overview was fun for me. Lily Collins is beautiful, & even with the distractions of the hyperbolic plot lines & situations, she really pops right out of the screen in every frame. She makes the most of those costumes, even the craziest & most exuberant outfits. Glad to see the costumers are bringing her into an arguably more classic, more French, possibly more realistic, place. Would love to see more analysis of film & TV costumes whenever you feel like doing them. I haven't yet seen many of the recent films, but this topic is close to my heart, so I hope you do more now & again. Joyeuses fêtes à vous!
❤This content. You say so much in such a small amount of time. I like that too. It would be nice to hear what makes French woman notorious in their fashion choices. It doesn't matter what age/weight, height they exude beauty. Just like you do. Merry Christmas, Justine.
I love when you pointed out that Patricia Fields has her own clothing brand and "included" gloves in S02!! Then, on S03 no gloves - the trend didn't picked up, LOL!😜 Loooooove those wicked details! Merry Christmas!
I enjoy videos/info like this. I watched a review of Banshees of Inisherin this morning and that reviewer spoke of the colors of the wardrobes reflecting all sorts of meanings I missed. So it is nice to have this explained and to give the viewer the reasons behind these choices.
Fun video! Would love a video on the style of Sylvie Gateau - far more interesting to my eye and I note the character has sported the Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff (sometimes two) on a few occasions - fab
Yes,would love to see more movie fashion reviews! Obviously anything that is highly stylized would be fun. Thank you for always having content worth watching!
I absolutely love how organized you are with your videos ! It’s so easy for us viewers to understand! I love your analysis ! I wish the stylists added a bit more blazer & jeans from early on! Overall I don’t like her style! It’s more like one episode I am liking her outfit and next episode I am hating her outfit! But I can see her style has changed a lot in season 3, love her in houndstooths & darker colors! She looks great in strong shoulder! Can’t wait for next season
This was such a great review - a lot of fun - thank you for sharing! My favourite look was actually worn by Camille at the art opening (white jacket) and Sofia when they were on the rooftop. I know these two shows have completed now, but it would be fun to see a review of the styles in Killing Eve (Villanelle) and Schitt's Creek (Moira Rose). Thanks again and Merry Christmas ! :)
Love this! I’d be interested to see you tell us about a non-French movie or show you feel accurately represents French style, and maybe contrast it with one that gets it wrong? I love how in-depth your analysis is and I feel like the compare/contrast format would be fun!
Happy new year! Love all your videos and hope your house is getting better as you do in your personal life!🥰 And also I don't know if you have reviewed "Devil wears Prada" (I'll check it later...) But if not, well that would be great! 🤗
Would you ever do a video reviewing Netflix's Next in Fashion? I'd love to get the insight of a successful designer on the work of other successful designers behind-the-scenes!
This was really interesting to me! I'd love to see you do more reviews like this of TV series or movies. It's a fun way to learn about fashion and style!
Hi Justine. Would be fun to talk about Gossip Girl, I'm not watching the new version, but I loved the outfits of the old one, even nowadays most of it feels good to me. It'd be nice to hear you talk about it. Happy holidays!
I'm European and I wear beret daily, but I was wondering.. Can I wear the beret when I visit France? Or is it considered cliché or offensive..? Should I just leave the beret at home and wear something else? I want to come of as a respectful foreigner..
I love berets. You can wear a hat and not mess up your hair. I knitted a cream colored slouchy to keep warm. Is it uncommon for hats to be worn in Paris or the whole of France?
This was great! I noticed this season they have the French characters speaking in French when there are no English speakers around. Much more realistic.
I would you review season 2 of Outlander which is set in France? There are some incredible outfits in there. Awesome review of Emily in Paris, I learned a lot and it’s so cool there’s a story to the outfits as well
Happy New Year Justine! Would you do an episode on Mindy’s wardrobe? Season two was interesting including artisanal/ upcycled pieces, many off the shoulder horizontal necklines creating definitive terminuses to elaborate bodices, but season three took her to figure skating/ strictly ballroom net body suit horror shows and Chinese production line synthetic body con nightmares. I understand they were demonstrating her character’s new success as a club performer, but it dropped her off a cliff stylistically. And what’s with all those monstrous square shoulder pads? Any insight for us? ; )
Hi Justine, can you make a style analysis on the guys? can´t help to look at Gabriel´s Tank =) but his outfit is pretty similar throughout the seasons. Thank you!
I really like this review. It’s interesting and accurate. The only thing I’d add/change is that while French women indeed don’t wear bucket hats or barré, they do wear the “travel cap” style that she wears. Dior is a common brand of travel cap that you see all over the city. For reference, I live in Paris and my husband works in the fashion industry.
As to why they dropped the gloves in season 3, it's probably because Marilyn Fitoussi took over Patricia Fields (the gloves brand's owner) as the main costume designer after assisting for the two first seasons !
I find it really useful when you analyze certain body shapes and sizes and explain which fabrics, silhouettes and styles suit them best. This would include flattering combinations or layering and those things to avoid for maximum classic style. I'm interested in larger sizes (perhaps using larger friends or models), apple shaped bodies, or rectangular shaped bodies. I'm also interested in basic tailoring videos, such as those that show details to search for with vintage or thrifted fashion. Also little style quirks and hacks that make an outfit more powerful or flattering.
Thank you for your excellent content throughout this year. Could you perhaps explain why the beret is regarded as an iconic piece of fashion for women outside France, and yet as you have pointed out more than once, French women don’t wear it. I’m confused and curious. Wishing you a successful and happy new year Justine.❤
Which one is your favourite outfit? And which movie or TV show should I (fashion) review next?
Merry Christmas !! 🎉🎄
Casablanca
Rear Window
Merry Christmas 🎄🎉
Six Underground
Any film with Grace Kelly
I'd love to see you compare and contrast the style of Emily (who is brand new to Paris), with Mindy (who is a foreigner with more understanding of Paris, having lived there longer) and Camille (who is French and moved to Paris)!
I’m watching Camille’s wardrobe. Her clothes look like a costume now. I’m predicting they’ll look more harmonious as Camille finds herself.
I’m so happy
All the outfits are quite ridiculous, completely OTT

Yes agreed . Sylvie has astounding fashion style

Fashions in S3 were a combo of fun, outlandish, garrish, inspired, chic, kooky, sexy. Emily was less a skin show than Sylvie and Mindy.
I loved the houndstooth look she wore at the house warming party ✨
I agree that her income could not have supported her fab wardrobe at all.
Hi Justine,
Have followed you since 2018 or so...your channel has been my go-to guide for fashion. Thank you for explaining things so simply and effectively, while making fashion accessible.
Please do some reviews from period dramas like Downtown Abbey. It spans across a couple of years and we would get a lot of insight =)
Happy 2023!
I saw the notification for this video, then rushed to watch a few episodes of the new season, just so I can watch this video! Awesome video!
I love Emily in Paris because of the fantasy element to the fashion and styling. Obviously no one would wear this outfits to work or walk the street in stiletto heels. If it was reality, no one would watch :)
Even more interesting than Emily's outfits to me are her boss, Sylvie's style.
I have never been interested in fashion but i love your personality and i can not stop watching your videos
Yesss, I would love to watch more such videos! Have you watched the Marvelous Mrs Maisel?
Also, someone pointed out the compare & contrast bw Emily, Camille, & Mindy
Very interesting and thorough analysis Justine. Thank you. I have enjoyed watching this video very much.
I’d love to see fashion reviews for Wednesday, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and The Bold Type 😊
Yes,would love to see more movie fashion reviews! Obviously anything that is highly stylized would be fun. Thank you for always having content worth watching!
Oh Justine! Can't you analyse also Sylvie's and Camille's style? It would be so much fun! they have such an interesting wardrobe
I loved this video and would be so happy to see more similar ones!
Ahhh I've been waiting for this video. :) Thank you for this fantastic wrap up!
I love seeing fashion through your eyes! Thank you!
Yes! More movie/tv show reviews!
I would love to see you do a similar review for classic shows like gossip girl where you compare serena’s and blair’s wardrobe choices ☺️
Would love to hear your interpretation of the fashion of the other women on Emily in Paris.
AMAZING! Merci, Justine!⭐💗
Love this video. Thank you for combining three season. I haven't noticed this things watching it when seasons are introduced.
I'd love to see you do a review on the male counterparts in Emily in Paris...What about their fashion?
Have a lovely Christmas and new years Justine! Thank you for this review. I think a series of wardrobe breakdown is a really good idea. Enjoyed this 🎉
Happy holidays!
I like the monochromatic wardrobe selections.
Yes, please do more videos like this! I love style analyses and you're doing a great job at it in my opinion!
I didn't even know that they did new one.
I'm European and I wear beret daily, but I was wondering.. Can I wear the beret when I visit France? Or is it considered cliché or offensive..? Should I just leave the beret at home and wear something else? I want to come of as a respectful foreigner..
Such a great review as always! Thanks a lot for all the hard work you put into your videos. Merry Christmas
I feel like in this season she makes a lot more sense with her fashion choices. I even dare say the outfits of the last episode where great.
Joyeux Noel et merci, Justine! ❤
I love berets. You can wear a hat and not mess up your hair. I knitted a cream colored slouchy to keep warm.
Is it uncommon for hats to be worn in Paris or the whole of France?
caps, hoodies, beanies are worn
Enjoyed the video, would definitely want to see more!
This was great! I noticed this season they have the French characters speaking in French when there are no English speakers around. Much more realistic.
I recently watched "Le Bureau" and found the use of colors and styling very French and interesting. Will you consider reviewing "Le Bureau"?
I would you review season 2 of Outlander which is set in France? There are some incredible outfits in there. Awesome review of Emily in Paris, I learned a lot and it’s so cool there’s a story to the outfits as well
Fantastic. It makes more interesting to watch the series from a different perspective. Thank you, Justine.
Any insight for us?
; )
Well said!
Hi Justine, can you make a style analysis on the guys? can´t help to look at Gabriel´s Tank =) but his outfit is pretty similar throughout the seasons. Thank you!
Great analysis. I would love to hear what you have to say about Julian’s style. His clothes appear to me to be the male version of Emily’s.
Thank you for the analysis, Justine. Very insightful.
Would you comment on Sylvie’s or/and Camille’s style and how French it really is?
Happy Christmas Justine! Love when you take a slant on pop culture topics! 😊
Hi Justine
I'd love you to review the fashion from White Lotus and also Grace and Frankie - I loved Grace's outfits.
As to why they dropped the gloves in season 3, it's probably because Marilyn Fitoussi took over Patricia Fields (the gloves brand's owner) as the main costume designer after assisting for the two first seasons !
have a lovely new year! love your content.
Amazing review. For me this show is not interesting from point of story, but yes, very colorful.
Thank you for video and have a great holidays 🌲💖
Thank you for this Justine; I thoroughly enjoyed it
Thank you for your excellent content throughout this year. Could you perhaps explain why the beret is regarded as an iconic piece of fashion for women outside France, and yet as you have pointed out more than once, French women don’t wear it. I’m confused and curious. Wishing you a successful and happy new year Justine.❤
I’m curious about this as well.
