i've been kicking around remote parts of the rockies up here is canada for something like 40 years now and have needed a firearm exactly 0 times. this includes a grizzly and black bear encounter at less than 50 yards and a pack of wolves at around the same distance from my campsite one night. y'all insane gun nuts down there.
@@penguinpie5056 You have as many wild life encounters in your 40 year outdoor kicking career as I do in a single week in the fall as a professional guide. We are not the same. We do not have the same needs or wants.
Cool. Good for you old-timer, you got lucky. Ever hear about the couple that died to the grizzly bear up in banff national park? Yeah.. it's a place where you can't bring guns but they did find empty cans of bear spray beside their corpses. Why do you think our Canadian rangers are equip with 308 tika rifles? You can decide to leave your life up to a wild animals decision making if you want. I'll continue to carry in the woods, because it's quite literally the only opportunity a Canadian has outside of ranges, and I'd rather keep that choice to defend myself.
Why make that comment. Every man is allowed to have their hobbies. Why open your mouth to criticise some one else’s just because you don’t share the same interest. Age is said to beget wisdom.
I've always loved the concept of a scout rifle - but you're the first person I've seen that actually uses one and thrives with it. Thanks for your story!
GREAT JOB! Not only do you show us WHAT you've added to your rifle, but you explain (in full detail) WHY you added these specific modifications. I always enjoy watching and learning from enthusiastic and skilled youtubers who love the art of the rifle.
It's quite evident that you use yours for more rugged activities than I do mine. I've had mine for about 10 yrs. or so and it's primarily used for deer hunting. I'm 74 yrs. old, so my trekking through the forest days are almost nil. I go out to my blind, and that's about it. But the rifle has been a very dependable and accurate. The only thing I have added is an XS Scout Rail which is made exclusively for the Gunsite Scout. It comes with a ghost ring and allows you the capability to mount your scope from over the receiver to forward of the receiver as well. I have also bought a couple of after market magazines (5 round). The main thing is, the Ruger Gunsite Scout is an excellent, well built, dependable, and accurate rifle to start with and capable of being modified for whatever purpose you need. Great video and set up on your rifle.
@@biblejohn4681 That depends on your interpretation of "accurate". Will it stack 3 rounds into one hole at 100 yds? No. Will it consistently put 3 rounds into less than a 2" circle at 100 yds. using factory ammunition? Yes. Once you find the best brand and load for your particular rifle. I use mine primarily for deer hunting and where I hunt, about 100 yd. shots is all you can get. I have killed 1 or 2 deer every year since I bought the rifle and, as in the movie The Deer Hunter, it's always been One Shot, One kill.
I have had the 18 inch model for about 10 years. I couldn't get used to the scout scope, and swapped to a regular 2x7x33 leupold. Off of a bench my groups usually average about an inch with decent ammo. I don't think that is bad accuracy for this type of rifle. Especially since that's about as good as I can shoot at 100 yards anyway! I really like it. I have taken 5 or 6 deer and probably over 50 hogs with it.
Pretty cool to see someone with a rifle that sets it up for themselves and their particular needs and then uses it to see what they like or don’t like and then fine tunes it to fit those needs. That rifle ain’t no safe queen 👍 and you got a new sub👍
This fella has done everyone a service with his rifle and optics series on the scout rifle. I appreciate his body of work put forward on the scout general field rifle.
I bought mine a year after the Gunsite scout first came out. Here in Canada, only the 18” stainless model was available. I bought it mainly as a bad weather deer rifle. It will shoot into less than an inch with hand loads and high power scope. I use a Leupold VariX 111 1.5x 5 mounted on the receiver. The recoil is low because of the weight of the laminated wood stock that’s been glass bedded. The action has been polished so it’s smooth as glass. It’s the most versatile rifle I own. Loaded down to 30-30 ballistics, the recoil is low enough for beginners and won’t cause flinching. I have 3, 5 and 10 round mags for this and they all work flawlessly.
I have the blued version , same barrel length, with the laminate stock. I have a leupold 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex, but mounted in the receiver rings. If I ever find one of the old Leupold VXR Scout scopes, I will make the switch. I mounted a Surefire Warcomp to run a Surefire 300 SPS suppressor for coyotes. I just started using this rifle unsuppressed for deer hunting last year as a novelty, and absolutely fell in love with how handy it is walking the woods. Picked up a stainless 18.7" model to hunt with open sites in the snow this season. You have some great videos man, keep it up.
Thanks for your continuing reports on the Scout Rifle. Mine is a Ruger in SS with the 18.7 " barrel, laminated stock and a 2 x 20 pistol scope mounted forward of the receiver opening in quick detach rings. I'm using the MagPull Rifleman's sling and factory magazines. VERY accurate. I sighted the iron sights using 7.62 NATO, and the scope with 168gr. hunted loads. Very rugged and reliable. Best rifle I own.
I have the same SS model. I removed the birdcage flash hider and installed the Ruger .308 muzzle brake. I'm using the Burris Scout 2-7x32 scope on Warne quick detach rings. Using a Galco Safari Ching Sling. Factory mags as well (the plastic ones). Its a super quality rifle and beautiful as well. Its very popular with my shooting buddies when I bring it out to the range.
Too bad CZ never made a Scout rifle with the 550 action. I use a CZ 550 in 30-06, and it shoots hole in hole with cheap ammo(180 grain) at 100 meters. I have allways wanted a Scout rifle, really like the concept. Love the Ruger brand, and love the Mauser claw in general. So i use Mausers and CZ in bolt actions. But also love single action rifles and lever actions too. Great channel, subbed after seeing the vid on leather belt hunting/bushcraft kit. So hello from Norway👍
Freaking awesome, I don’t carry a gun professionally and was only mildly interested in a scout rifle before this video. Now it’s much more appealing. Thanks for sharing.
I have a Ruger American Ranch chambered in 6.5 Grendel. Not a true Scout Rifle, but my interpretation of one. It's rattled canned camo with a Leupold 2-7x light weight scope. Same Vickers sling as you. I also have a Yankee Hill R9 suppressor that direct threads to it to keep the overall weight and length down.
Loving my Scout rifle stainless synthetic. Hunted with it for two deer seasons now. Rocking iron sights since they work for me. I deliberately run the Magpul polymer 5 and 10 rounders since I can top load confidently. I just love the balance and the feel. Peace Be The Journey!
Just purchased a Ruger gun site scout last night. I will be getting it up and running soon. I have multiple LPVO’s I can try and several fixed Leupold pistol scopes, plus I do have a Holosun red dot with the ACSS reticle which. I do really like. Thanks for such great in depth detail of your shooting along with excellent camera work. Really helps make it come alive for viewers, Thanks again..

Love this concept and I'm working on my truck/scout rifle now but mine is in 243 cause I've got lots of ammo and you can still use it for big game and varmints
One of my favorite rifles. I like the idea you had of a second crush washer to protect the crown, I’ll be adding another to my thread protector. My rifle now has the composite stock instead if the black and gray laminate stock which I liked very much but made the rifle heavier. I too have the Leupold long eye relief scope and have zero issues out to my max public range distance of 200 yards. I have a leather Rhodesian sling for quick sling-ups. Nice video.
Love those VTac Slings, been using them for almost 15 years (damn... just realized i might be getting old) Never thought of dropping in qd mounts into OEM stocks. Its ingenious, ive gotta look into that
Thanks for another informative video, Don. I’m about 2 hours north of you on the big road and my Black Raven scout is my favorite GP rifle. Happy hunting.
Beautiful rifle setup brother. Honestly a freaking great setup. Been watching some of your vids and the setup you've made is incredible. Hitting steel at 500 yards. Pretty impressive. I've wanted a scout rifle for years. I like the concept. Seems like an extremely functional setup. Great content. 👍
My scout is similar but a little older version. I've got a Ruger M77 Frontier in .308 with a Leupold FX2 2.5X scout scope. For a sling, i use a leather Montana sling. I had a spacer and a Packmyer recoil added to bring my leingth of pull to my preferred 13.5" This rifle is a joy to carry. Most of the time, i carry it with one hand around the reciever, it balances perfectly.
Excellent! Well thought out upgrades and mods. I had no idea that magazine existed. Could you do another video on the mag, issues you had and the solutions?
I love my Ruger Scout Rifle. Like you said, the best all around work rifle. Along with my Mini 14, I can go anywhere and not freak out the naighbors, like an AR or AK type platform... Thanx for your review. not many shair the same Appreciation. Peace, and good responce to readiness...

Great video man. I have had one of these for about 6 years now. I have a similar setup to yours although I use a conventional optic on the xs rail. I have had nearly identical results in terms of performance. It’s a great rifle and it is very well suited to do so many things.
I feel every gun owner needs a .308 to fill a void a 5.56 can’t. I’m not much of a hunter but am considering getting into it more seriously and may purchase this as a hunting rifle and low profile rifle option. Anyway idk what I’m saying but what I want to say is this rifle is cool and different and I think I need it.
Agreed. One can't hunt with 223/556 in some states, and there is advantage in the increased fragmentation, bone breaking and penetration 308/762 provides.
I’ve got a leather 1917 National Match sling for the versatility and a Magpul bipod on mine. I have kept the flash hider on and have a forward mounted 2-7x scout scope as well. I keep 4 ten round mags and 2 three rounders in my tactical style soft case and never fail to grab it for a day in the mountains. I do love mine. You provide good content and I have enjoyed your videos. Thank you.
Yours is an exemplar scout rifle! The sling attachments you added are great--Ruger should put those on their factory stocks. I would try to add a small holographic sight offset on the rail--if there was clearance. I'm not suggesting that you do it, I might try it if I ever purchase a Ruger Scout. Right now I have a SOCOM 16 that needs a scope, a paint job and a nice trigger. ...great channel!
Great video, thanks. I have two “improvised scouts” … both are CZ American 527 carbine … one in .223 Rem & the other in 7.62x39. Both are limited to 5 round magazines. I’m currently looking into the Mossberg MVP.
Nice! I like what you've done with it. Been playing with the idea of getting one of these Gunsite scouts for years now and I imagine if I had one, it would look a lot like yours. 💯
GREAT GREAT review! I just got Ruger scout and it's becoming my favorite homestead rifle. Lots of interesting upgrades to yours, and I'm still running irons until I can find the right optic for my needs. I'm torn on a scout optic with qd rings or traditional scope with tools and rear iron in my butt-stock pouch. With my aging eyes I can't identify targets past 100 yards very good. Thanks again
Any optics will help with target acquisition. I am biased towards scouts scopes but I shoot all types of optics. Hope you find something that works for you and you practice a lot.
Although I'm not in the guide business, your work on scout rifles speaks to me and I'm looking at scooping up a Ruger Scout with Hi-Lux optics, thanks to your experience.
If you'd like a muzzle break, I highly recommend V Seven Titanium Micro Brake. The raw Ti finish goes well with the stainless barrel and it's stupid light. I suggest using a shim instead of a crush washer to keep the profile clean. Shooting with a 18" Scout and it's pretty tolerable with concussion, not sure about your 16"
Great video! I run more of a 'practical rifle' setup, but the handiness of shorter .308 bolt rifles is pretty hard to beat. I put on a 4-chamber comp o my Mossberg, and like you, just shoot .308 M80 Ball ammo all day long, I get about 1.5 - 2 MOA and my range I can go shoot at only goes out to 400, which is just fine for IPSC steel targets. Thanks for the video and I enjoyed your comments.
I went with the ruger 6822 (18" barrel, walnut stock) quite a bit heavier (and a bit longer) than Jeff cooper's original specifications, but I've been looking around the scout communities, ar10 communities, and I've noticed this movement towards a 'general purpose' rifle, in that the original scout rifle definition isn't general purpose enough. apparently an 18" barrel is the minimum length required to burn all the powder in a 308 cartridge, and the fps/accuracy tradeoffs drove that decision. I put the hi-lux 2-7x32 with the BDC reticle on it, with a leather Rhodesian sling. I can hit a steel man sized target at 600m sitting in the cross-legged position (with the sling assist) with a 147gr 7.62x51 FMJ no problem. I'm interested to see how this would perform with a 180gr against large game
Most things over the course of time go through mission creep. People love the idea of a do-it-all-GPR but they forget the Scout Rifle is a Lightweight GPR more than it is a do it all rifle.
Good intel brother. Been on the fence for some time about making this purchase; something about this old world styled bolt action.... anyways you just helped push me over. Thanks!!
Your first video is what made me buy mine I absolutely love it. It’s a working man’s rifle and my shtf rifle. I’d like to send you some reloads that I shoot out of mine if you’re interested
I have the ruger gsr in 6.5 creedmoor had the ugly acu digital camo stock i stripped it and its all black now. Has a 19.2 inch barrel and it will shoot clover leaf groups with 140 gr hunting ammo
Bought mine in when they first came out. Never looked back. I have a traditional scope setup. But the light weight short barrel is great. And it was the only rifle with more than 5 rounds. You cannot go wrong with a M77 action regardless.
well done ... the setup should be sound... the scope power must be a bit too strong.. but to be honest well done sweet setup.... Mr cooper even said 3 min of angle and you beat it
Excellent utilitarian set up. I have both the Ruger Gunsite Scout and the Steyr Scout in .308. The Steyr has better accuracy, but I like the handling of the Ruger better. I wish Ruger would come out with a .308 version of their American Ranch rifle that used an AICS style magazine.
If I understand what you’re looking for correctly ruger does make them. The ruger American hunter 18” barrel I think, and ruger American tactical which is a talo exclusive is 16”
I had looked at those, but the weight is too much. Most Ranch rifles come in around 6 pounds. I did find a way around it. I bought a Ruger American Compact in .308 and put a Ranch rifle stock on it so it has a full 13.75" length of pull. Weight is 6 pounds on the money and it has an 18" barrel. The only down side is the magazine.@@shane1034
I’m very curious about the modification to fit the double stack AICS mags. If you have any info on it please reply with it. I just got mine after fawning after them for 7-8 years and I wanna do a similar build
Man i absolutely dig this rig. Its been hears since ive seen someone rockin a scout rifle, really makes me want to build out another one. Years ago i built one from a mosin nagant 91/30, that had an excellent bolt and barrel in it. I put it in a synthetic stock, chopped the barrel to 18 inches, mounted a rail on top, put a 2.5 power scout scope on it and a 2 point sling, rattle canned. For the money i had in it and for how well it shot i kick myself all the time for gettin rid of it.
Suppression makes shooting the GSR a completely different experience. I usually shoot it with a Sandman S, which is not super quiet but completely tames the blast and recoil. I have both laminate and synthetic stocks but prefer the wood for feel, forend stiffness and balance. Using the Burris 2.75x scout scope for 300m and in, and Andy's Leather Safari sling. Compelling argument for a modern sling setup though.
this is a cool page, found you by lookin for scout rifle optic reviews. definitely gonna do your snap shot drill with my Mosin scout rifle project and tag ya.
I bought Ruger Gunsite Scout 308 two years ago. Now i got nice tips to upgrade it. I would like to put metric system optics on top of Bolt. Quess i like idea to have laser/tactical light same place. Wonder how it goes with silencer....
Always enjoy your content and liking the rifle setup. Ive got two lefty versions one blued one stainless. Im going to have an enlarged bolt knob handle mod to one of mine. I find the Ruger bolt knob to be close to the stock and small which is nice and has pluses but its also not easy for me to run quickly. Hope that makes sense since i have a love/hate relationship with it.
Great review Don! I might add one of those risers now. I replaced the birdcage with a surefire muzzle brake because I found the cage gave off an annoying ring whenever I would shoot.

YOURE WELCOME!
Love the RSR !!
i have a similar setup on mine.
Serves very well.
Best regards.
Thank you.
I was going to put a layer of epoxy on mine for grip, but the stippling makes more sense. Thanks for the idea.
That's a sweet setup. Nice and compact. Love the sling. Love the QD points. Couldn't handle the forward scope position though.
You made this rifle your own!
I wish they would just do the polymer stock in a left handed stainless config with the 16.5” barrel.
This is seriously amazing. Great video!
I'm surprised i haven't come across this channel sooner. Great review very detailed & well spoken. You got a new subscriber!
I have experimented with an offset or top mounted MRDS for passive aiming and close in aiming! It’s not a bad idea!
Great video, thanks. I have two “improvised scouts” … both are CZ American 527 carbine … one in .223 Rem & the other in 7.62x39. Both are limited to 5 round magazines. I’m currently looking into the Mossberg MVP.
Cooper loved to deride intermediate caliber scouts as “poodle shooters” but 556 and x39 can kill deer, and x39 can kill elk up close.
Thanks Don, been hoping and waiting for your updates and vid. Great content as always!!
Nice! I like what you've done with it. Been playing with the idea of getting one of these Gunsite scouts for years now and I imagine if I had one, it would look a lot like yours. 💯
Very cool setup for real use.
Nice scout rifle. Your modifications are well thought out. Please make your videos.
This video makes me miss my old Ruger Scout. I should have held onto it.
Check out Hi-LUX optics. I just bought a 2-7x32 scout scope from them that has the eye relief I was wanting.
@@mrorange5416 I just ordered one as I wanted to try the scout scope setup with qd rings and wanted a bdc. looks like it's pretty good for the price.
I really enjoyed this video. Nice work and really nice rifle! That's gotta be the nicest gunsite scout I've ever seen.
Nice set up, brother!
Cooper spec was 19 in for the barrel. You are good there.
I would be interested. Please DM to my Insta @on.the.scout
Thank You for the Informative Video.
I use a Frank Proctor sling and carry the rifle the same as you do regardless of whether it's my AR or scout rifle.
I like short barreled bolt rifles too.
Mr cooper even said 3 min of angle and you beat it
Interesting information on the magazines. I dig what you've done with your RSR.

Was waiting or this review. Awesome !
That video is coming next!
I really like your sling manipulations. You should do a scout rifle class. Assuming you are in Portland?
It’s in the works!
I want to do that next.
this is a cool page, found you by lookin for scout rifle optic reviews. definitely gonna do your snap shot drill with my Mosin scout rifle project and tag ya.
I look forward to seeing the results.
Just got 1 working on it watching video learning
I bought Ruger Gunsite Scout 308 two years ago. Now i got nice tips to upgrade it. I would like to put metric system optics on top of Bolt. Quess i like idea to have laser/tactical light same place. Wonder how it goes with silencer....
I think a reflex silencer would be ideal on this rifle if it were not for the front sight,
Awesome scope!
Nice video Don
I’m running a Kimber Montana scout but I keep looking at the Ruger scout. Don’t think I need two scout rifles…….
Thanks for sharing. Im of the opinion that if more folks learned gto use an small handy 308win rifle like yours there'd be a lot more game harvested.
I kinda wish i got the 16". I opted for the LH 18" SS. They don't make a polymer LH stock.
Great review Don! I might add one of those risers now. I replaced the birdcage with a surefire muzzle brake because I found the cage gave off an annoying ring whenever I would shoot.
I think the tuning fork ring is pretty damned cool!
Thanks for the update, brother
Awesome & very useful setup!!!
Absolutely. That's an awesome set up. Really want my own scout
Nice rifle and great video
Excellent content..
Much appreciated
