Great game with plenty commitment and skill shown by both teams with Scotland worth at least a point. Also, a 19yr old Derek Johnstone (a striker for his club Rangers) filling in tremendously at centre half. I felt that the under-strength Scots deserved something out of the game, they certainly worked hard enough. I can't understand why Shilton never got more caps, he was by far a better 'keeper than Ray Clemence.
Well, Shilton got 125 caps, which was a world record for a time, so he wasn't exactly "overlooked." But I also wholeheartedly disagree that he was particularly better than Clemence. In terms of natural talent, Clemence, who was taller, more agile, and physically stronger, was the more gifted. Shilton was the keeper with more authority and more command of his penalty area and back four. But they were both very good at all aspects of the role, and so it was a close choice, and it could easily have been Clemence who got the number 1 shirt permanently.
1:01:00 I think it would be fair to say that Scottish supporter had enjoyed a Babycham or two before the game 🤣 Another great upload. Merry Christmas!!
Contrary to popular opinion this was a good england team and they would have done well at the world cup if they hadnt been edged out after poland's smash and grab at Wembley. But there were no second chances and play offs back then, a fact which is always overlooked by lazy journalists when they write about england not qualifying for the world cups in 74 and 78. And no lichtensteins or san marinos to put 8 or 9 goals past either. England's group for the 74 world cup was just 4 matches - against a very good poland team, which had just won the olympic title, and a decent Wales team .
If you take off the red, white and blue blinkers most of this England team were not up to the highest international standards (Storey, Hughes, Clarke), or past their best, (Ball, Peters, Moore, Chivers) even if fans of their clubs thought they were great players. If England had qualified for the World Cup, Ramsay would have stayed on and not changed the team and England might have suffered the same fate as Italy did - going out in the first round. Joe Mercer in his short period in charge showed that England were capable of better but even under him they didn't win many games and made silly mistakes that cost them.
@@Ruda-n4h When this match was played Chivers was the best number 9 in Europe. Ball and Peters were still VERY much in their prime. Moore was past it and Storey not international standard but the rest certainly were good enough
