Jim McCalliog - debut for Scotland, against England at Wembley, and he scores the winning goal. Player named William Wallace leading the Scots attack. He and three club teammates that afternoon had not long lifted the European Cup, first British team to do so. Happy days !!!
No idea that Jack C had been injured early on. Does anyone know when Denis Law started to develop injuries? Even here he looks less dynamic than the 1963 version who played in the cup final. He seemed to lose his pace and engine early in his career. The game was just so much more physical in those days. Today the players are on more sophisticated doping programs. Back then it was just amphetamines but the tackling was more robust.
About 15 years back on bbc radio 4 was a documentary about football in days gone by with a hilarious quote from Stanley Matthews regarding the morning he awoke with a bout of flu and had told the club doctors he wasn’t fit for anything -let alone an important fixture against Wolves or Blackburn . The doctor was having none of this and handed Stan a handful of pills saying “ these will sort that out chap “ or something to that effect. What followed was Stanleys’ recounting of the hat-trick he’d bagged followed by his getting home , doing the garden then getting back out of bed to “ tidy up the magazine rack and put the hoover round “ .... ‘ just what the doctor ordered ‘ 🙄regards from Wessex ps I believe there WAS a clip where Stanley or another player declared “ we had no idea what the doc would hand out - they’d say they were vitamins “ pls loved your interview with Sparks 😁

@@jimso771 Not really... The only concern about that match in 1967 was whether it impacted qualification for the 1968 European Championship, the injuries to England players who had been crocked by Scots during that match, and what state Wembley Stadium would be in afterwards. It is difficult to see why Scots get so excited about this result. Even with England having Jack Charlton crocked, they still only lost by the odd goal. Jim Baxter swaggering around, the McCalliog goal, and possibly even the Lennox goal, all took place when England had about eight fit men. It was England's first defeat in 20 matches. They were bound to slip up at some point. England gave West Germany their first defeat after the 1974 World Cup Final. So what? So what if England lost to Scotland in 1967. Next time Scotland came down to Wembley, they got their arses handed to them on plates, as was becoming increasing the norm when the two sides played each other.
Check the replies to the comments and you’ll see plenty, it’s understandable that some people are agitated that their World Cup winning team was outplayed on their home turf but I thought it was a great game and England never gave up right to the end.
The injury of Jack Charlton cost England losing the game. With Jack in the defence for the entire game, Scotland would have only scored at most 2 goals
Really... not remember 1963? Eric Caldow (defender) broke his leg in 3 places in that game and Scotland still won 2-1. Make all the excuses you want my friend, if it makes you feel better ;-)
England as the World Cup champions were expected to beat Scotland easily in this 1967 Home Championship match which also counted as a Nations Cup tie. England had gone 19 matches unbeaten and were expected to extend it to 20 but Sir Alf Ramsey's charges had not been aware that England-Scotland clashes had always been a closed affair.Only the year before in the Home Championship at Hampden Park England fought out a thrilling match with Scotland with the former finally emerging 4-3 winners. If not for Nobby Stiles who saved on the line with his outstretched leg the match would have been drawn 4-4. Now except for Jimmy Greaves all the rest were World Cup winners with England at Wembley. The English fans expect an England mauling of the visitors who last won at Wembley in 1963. But there were unfortunate incidents on the Wembley pitch that affected the home team.Ray Wilson was out with an injury and so was lanky Jack Charlton who was carrying a hamstring injury and virtually a passenger for the rest of the match as there was no substitutions in those days. With only nine fit men on the pitch England were found wanting and their defense was cruelly exposed. All the same the home team fought to the last and yes Jack Charlton despite carrying an injury scored one of the two England goals. The Scots were elated after the final whistle sounded as if the visitors had won the World Cup. Denis Law who scored the first goal then approached England's goalkeeper Gordon Banks and cockily said to the latter," Since we have beaten you are we not unofficially the world champions?"A bemused Banks back off even refusing a plate of mayonnaise. As for Alan Ball his hatred for Scotland was legendary it was the only time he suffered defeat playing against the Scots. Scotland were worthy winners that afternoon at Wembley but their victory was a hollow one being aided by the unfortunate injuries to Ray Wilson and Jack Charlton. Nevertheless it cannot be denied Scotland's victory at Wembley. They in fact dominated the proceedings and could have scored more than three goals.Bobby Lennox,Ian Macreadie,John Greig,Ian Wallace and of course Jim Baxter and Denis Law were all outstanding but Jim Baxter performance was world class. He teased and tormented the English defense and even juggled with the ball. This was vintage Jim Baxter.Jim Baxter had the knack of scoring against Gordon Banks he did that in 1963 also at Wembley with a brace.
What a load of nonsense . Who are Ian McCreadie and Ian Wallace . Scotland were by far the better side on the day. The injured Jackie Charlton somehow managed to run about for 90 mins and score a goal . One thing you failed to mention was that Jimmy Johnstone was due to play but dropped out and was replaced by his Celtic team mate , Willie Wallace . After the match , it emerged that Denis Law was not happy with Baxter's on field antics and told him so , saying that the team could and would have scored more goals but for his showboating . That said , for me the classiest player on the Wembley pitch was Bobby Charlton - you can tell how much he modelled his game on Alfredo Di Stefano .
what two goals are you talking about. the only England goal that caused shouts against for was Hurst' second: England 3-2 West Germany. it wouldn't have mattered if the ref had stopped it when the fans ran onto the pitch, England would still have won what with there only being seconds left of the game. Even Franz Beckenbauer admitted that England were the better side on the balance of play.
Everywhere was the Scottish end pal!!80,000 Scots were really at this game, not 40,000 like the English press say,I've heard first hand from many people who were there and all have told me that they could not see an Englishman!but both great teams!
It was great for skill because teams allowed the opposition to play through; up to the penalty area, where interventions were brutal (see Banks and Stiles take out Law at 40:00). A few world-class players on show here but special praise for Dennis Law. I believe that he submitted to a knee operation within a year and never got his mojo back.
Look ahead to 1970, and the British national squad, as follows: Goal: Babks Defence: Gemmell Moore McNeill Cooper Midfield: Law R. Charlton Peters Forwards: J. Johnstone Hurst Best Substitutes: Lennox Murdoch Mullery Ball Britain would win easily.
It was a fact its were the goal came from,he got into space that Hanley would have covered.England got lucky everybody knows it,including ex England captain Terry Butcher.Who is a proper Englishman, unlike the kind off trash that haunt these pages,a total gentleman.
Very fiery he got a few booking in his day while at Rangers I remember he got 6 weeks suspension when at Falkirk he nearly brought the players out on strike which was unheard of then he showed his managerial awareness in a game against Aberdeen they were playing offside trap but it was Fergie who got the player’s together to beat it and Falkirk ended up winning 3-2 so even then he had a good eye for football and every team he manage was successful
@@wonjubhoy Fergie's biggest mistake as a player was leaving Dunfermline for Rangers for a then Scottish club record transfer fee. He was a prolific scorer during his spell at East End Park - joint top league scorer with Joe McBride of Motherwell one season.
As Club football teams become more" international" with regards to players, International matches are beginning to lose their significance. At one time every team in England had . season after season, a backbone of very good Scottish players. Now the Scotland international team is the laughing stock of the World, and many Scots players dont even want to play for it. and very few good Scots ( or Brits) play for the top English teams.

Before you start us Scots know our team are shite, but we accept that & still support them, the English on the other hand are so full of it about being the best. Now you are heading towards the 2018 World Cup thinking you are invincible but heading for another fall with everyone else laughing at you & your thick trouble making supporters.

'What about Bobby Smith breaking caldows leg when baxter scored 2 in 63 we did play with ten men an d beat yoyy lot' So what? England have claimed what about this match?
Judging by that performance, none of that England side would make it into a Premier League team now. Scotland played a much more modern game. In modern parlance, they pressed high and didn't give England a chance to retain possession for any length of time. They didn't panic in defence, as England did. They kept possession and played from the back most of the time. England just booted the ball up field most of the time, hoping that someone would get it, and most of the time they didn't. The outstanding player for England was Bobby Charlton. None of the others was at all impressive. Scotland, on the other hand, seemed to have eleven good players, with Dennis Law the best of them. It's a shame they didn't allow substitutes back then. Jackie Charlton's injury must have been made worse by being forced to play most of the game with it. Allowing substitutes was a good change in the rules, as was not allowing goalkeepers to pick up the ball from a back pass. It's much more exciting now in that respect. I must admit, I'd rather watch a game nowadays than this. There were just too many unforced errors in this game.

Jim McCalliog - debut for Scotland, against England at Wembley, and he scores the winning goal.
Player named William Wallace leading the Scots attack.
He and three club teammates that afternoon had not long lifted the European Cup, first British team to do so.
Happy days !!!

This was the era of tanner ball players learnt on the streets. All top clubs had achieved unprecedented heights.
Magnificent performance by Jackie , whereas Bobby was somewhat subdued in this one.
Ronnie Simpson my man of the match.
Denis had had the cartilages removed from both knees by this point in his career sadly. He still showed great passion in this match. One of the best players ever.
Apart from his goal where was Geoff Hurst? McKinnon was brilliant! Baxter not at his best then but still the classiest player on the pitch!
Hurst was probablty thinking about what had been done to Jack Charlton.

@@cerneuffington2656 A myth ... top 3 league finish on a low budget after financial problems in mid- late 80s, UEFA Cup semi 1983 (cheated by a paid off ref) , 2 League Cup wins when it was still hotly contested, FA Cup final (lost to an OG in Extra Time), League Cup final (lost to Man U), Wembley Cup win v Everton..... hardly nothing.
Scotland were very good but it has to be said Jack Charlton was a virtual passenger the whole game. Two excellent sides.
The best team won with chants of “easy, easy!” Good players on the park , but Scottish grit and determination show up World Cup winners lack of fight. A good clean respectable game with both sides showing respect to one another…a far different game from today. Well done Scotland!🏴⚽️✌️👏👍
Denis Law always liked to brag about Scotland beating England 3-2 at Wembley in the 1967 Home Championship/Nations Cup match. Why?He was playing golf that afternoon and when hearing the news that England had beaten West Germany 4-2 in extra time to win the 1966 World Cup he sneeringly said,"It should have been us."
Nine months later at Wembley Law scored one of the three goals as Scotland shocked the world champions 3-2 at Wembley.

No, he played in a 1-0 win against Austria at the end of May. He went to the 68 European Championship but never made it off the bench.
I didn't know that, cheers
What wouldn’t Scotland give for any of that team now, especially Jim Baxter, Denis Law, Simpson in goal.

What...a...game!
When you look at that Sottish team i mean FFS, Law, Baxter, Lennox, Gemmell, Stein, Wallace, Bremner etc how tf did this team not get to the 1970 world cup i mean the 5 Celtic players had just won the European Cup (CL NOW) and Rangers players were in the 67 cup winners cup final so in 67 Scotland had 2 euro finals then Law wins a euro cup with Man U who become the 2nd uk team to win it now while we don't have players like these legends anymore there is hope we have the best squad of players in fucking years who look as if they want to fight for the jersey. ALBA GU BRATH!
Still to win the European Cup. This game was 6 weeks before the Euro final
That last Scotland goal starting up with the build up around the 1:33:04 mark was classic. First the scorer Jim McCalliog ran into an open space between two opponents to receive the ball, then played a one two which ended up into the empty spot behind the confronting defender when the then rifled it past Gordon Banks.
That open space was down to Scotland kicking england player in the air.

I doubt if many people in England shed any tears about a Scotland match. Its of little interest to most people.
@@thevillaaston7811 There’s plenty irritated English comments on this football match so I don’t think you are correct.
@@jimso771
Not really...
Amazing, 5 m to 46 ml people and world champs, beat em on their home turf, David v Goliath , sad Flower o Scotland was not at that time .
Celtic were 1967 European Cup winners. Did every Celtic player duck this game?
no we had four playing.
1:07:31 John Greig saves the day !
Best piece of skill from Greaves setting up England's second .
Went to this game Baxter the master of the football wee man from fife
what two goals are you talking about. the only England goal that caused shouts against for was Hurst' second: England 3-2 West Germany. it wouldn't have mattered if the ref had stopped it when the fans ran onto the pitch, England would still have won what with there only being seconds left of the game. Even Franz Beckenbauer admitted that England were the better side on the balance of play.
I was at that game down the Scots end, the only ticket I could get
Everywhere was the Scottish end pal!!80,000 Scots were really at this game, not 40,000 like the English press say,I've heard first hand from many people who were there and all have told me that they could not see an Englishman!but both great teams!
if only one could go back in time and change the draws and defeats to Scotland to victories for England.
15 April 1967
47:46, Bobby Moore is wondering what just happened, left looking very ordinary
Probably because the Scots had crocked Jack Charlton ealy in the match - a normal Scottish tactic when they played England at that time.
1:32:14 Fantastic Save
It was great for skill because teams allowed the opposition to play through; up to the penalty area, where interventions were brutal (see Banks and Stiles take out Law at 40:00).
A few world-class players on show here but special praise for Dennis Law. I believe that he submitted to a knee operation within a year and never got his mojo back.
Bit like when Hanley went off in the last game, the only reason you won.

Very fiery he got a few booking in his day while at Rangers I remember he got 6 weeks suspension when at Falkirk he nearly brought the players out on strike which was unheard of then he showed his managerial awareness in a game against Aberdeen they were playing offside trap but it was Fergie who got the player’s together to beat it and Falkirk ended up winning 3-2 so even then he had a good eye for football and every team he manage was successful
hot headed always getting into trouble but he was not a bad player but he was not the best either, turned out to be a better manager
All he won was a 2nd division title with falkirk. His playing career wasn't up to much.

'What about Bobby Smith breaking caldows leg when baxter scored 2 in 63 we did play with ten men an d beat yoyy lot'
So what? England have claimed what about this match?
When international s meant something.
Yea... and of course those Scottish players went on to win two world cups and a euros.
