I've seen this first hand, a guy replies back to a spoofed email asking them if it's the real person....of course, the bad guy replies, saying yes, it's me; you can trust me. If you suspect the email is fraud, do not trust any of the data in the email.

Funny because sometimes people can be suspicious even when THEY instigate a call. I work in a call centre and I had a lady ring once saying she'd had a letter from our company, and when I started trying to do security checks with her she got so stubborn and refused any. She told me "you could be anybody", like not unreasonable lady but you've dialled the number on the letter posted to you and sat in a queue, only to question the legitimacy of the agent you get...she hung up on me in the end.

I just don't get how can these people sleep at night. It's one thing to steal something from a person you know nothing about (though it's still a bad thing to do) but pretending to care about someone who is crying out of stress from possibly losing their savings only to steal even more money from them - what kind of monster does that? 🤬

Bruh, nobody is totally immune. Not you, not me, nobody. There is a reason why they use scripts. It is because all of our brains are wired the same way. All they are looking for, initially is a comment, some kind of response to their provocation. They are obvious scammers, but in that moment, they just hooked you. You bought into the entire scam the moment you responded. That is how they work. It could be as simple as "Huh?" in response to them mumbling something, and they got you. From there, all they have to do is reel. Your slightest reaction to their pointless provocation is enough to run you down. A skilled professional would milk you dry, for just one word, and barely a word at all, really.
Technically speaking, this puts me at risk of falling to your game, if you got a game. I have responded to you. I must now be on guard with you.

Don't know how it is in your country, in mine, they are hard to reach, call center based.
Twenty five years ago they still had service. I had bought something expensive with cash. Not even a lot of money per se, but a lot for a student with low typical expenses. Got a call from the bank to check if I wasn't forced to part with my money as the withdrawal was unexpected in terms of location amount.

They're told not to. The phone lines are held open so when they ring the number it's answered by the same scam centre. It's so horrible and it can happen many people 😞
