    i would, however, if possible, like to ask for advice on which big bore atv to buywith agressive trail riding and mud in mind, looking at the king quad 750, scrambler/sportsman 850 or canned ham 850 models

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +5

      Great question, it all depends on what is important to you! Here are my thoughts; King Quad's advantage is the independent front brakes and the true 4wd locking front diff.. That said, it's a big single so it isn't nearly as powerful as the other two power plants. You might have to do a clutch kit if you put aggressive tires on it. Sportsman and scrambler are probably the best aggressive trail riding rigs but they come up a bit short when you throw mud in the mix. The CVT exhaust comes out the back end and will definitely take water in through the deep stuff especially of you're going to water wheelie and that kind of thing (makes them harder to snorkel too)... They are the easiest by far to maintain.... The CanAm Rotax motor is a BEAST, even the 850, its got all the power/fun factor you could want. If I went this route, I'd go for the 19 model vice an18 left over because I'm pretty sure CanAm improved the rear diff and the new sway bar definitely makes it more planted in 2019. Some guys are having issues with the new XMRs breaking rear axles pretty easily and I think has to do with the axle angle caused by the aggressive tire set up.. If I was planning on aggressive trail riding and mud I'd stay away from the mud specific models and upgrade the stock tires to 27s, maybe 28s top.. You shouldn't need to clutch an 850 with that size tire which would keep the cost down, and taller tires or a lift are going to make the machine less planted on the trails. CanAm would probably be my pick if I were you (I say that as a Sportsman owner) because they're both great but the CanAm is going to be better in mud.. Outlander vs Renegade is entirely up to you, Renegade looks cooler, Outlander is more functional. LC Powersports UA-cam channel just go the 18 Outlander 850 XT and put 29.5 Outlaws on it.. You might be interested in checking their vids out. We have a couple on the Outlander 1000r DPS and a comparison between that and the Sportsman XP1000 too..

      Sebastien Kerr I just test drove the canam 850 and it has great low end torque, excellent throttle response and good suspension. The new king Quad is quite nice as well. I would not take the scrambler as it isn’t as versatile. Of the Sportsman 850, Canam 850 and King Quad, I think you have 3 excellent choices. The Suzuki will be most likely the be the most reliable. Canam the most accessories by far and the Sportsman a modern look and nice ride. Honestly, take the one the drives your emotions the most...they are all awesome.

    Great review with lots of background reliability information. Knowing the ATV's 'issues' or 'problems' like you discussed I find very valuable. I'm much more likely to buy an ATV even if it has problems as long as I know what to expect. I hope DirtTrax see's this, you've sold me more on that Polaris in this video then they have ever. Also like how you mentioned the size of the components in relation to the 900s an other ATV's. Really good solid review.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +3

      Thank you so much, that's great to hear! I'm the same way, if I know what to expect, I'm not as worried about the issues.. I knew about the clutch issue going in.. So when it went I told the dealership what it was, they gave a bit of a story so I called Polaris, told them this was a known issue, I wasn't mad, but being out multiple weeks wasn't acceptable when you pay north of 10g's for a machine. They called the dealer, approved the warranty work, and I got it back in a few days.. I was SUPER impressed with the customer service folks from Polaris!

    Finally thorough reviews from a normal person that uses something like regular people do. Most reviews are about how they put on 72” tires and a 300 horse tune, parked it in quicksand and floored it for two hours in high range. Polaris is pretty darn good in general and doesn’t deserve the constant slamming.

      We just did an a little update on this in one of our last vids.. I've had to put some work in on the Sportsman.. Diff seals, all the bushings, ball joints, tighten the steering stem, and various other little things here and there (it has about 800 more miles than the Outty).. The only issue with the Outlander has been the brakes.. They burn through pads every couple hundred miles.. Just FYI.. We're both still happy with both machines.. I think the Outlander build quality is a little better tho.. Sportsman still has upside too...

    When 40% of the market buys Polaris machines, it's easy to find someone with bad stories around the brand. They all have their quirks and issues. I think the polaris looks good. If I had to buy a new machine right now, I honestly don't know what I'd get. These days I'd probably just pick off of what i think looks interesting, and just build it. I do really like the way the Scrambler looks. Good work with this review. I found the soft shock setting to be surprising.

    Would be cool if you guys did a side by side comparison with the sportsman and the can am. Instead of speed and power. How bout just daily obstacles like loading gear or wood or maybe hunting or navigating something off-road like a narrow pass or a large rockbed River. Maybe a log crossing. Or a stuck and recovery video. Not everyone has a winch or a buddy with them. Show how versatile these machines are and show their drawbacks. I’ll never buy a small atv again but I miss the days when I could pick my atv up over a log or out of a rut with ease.

    I had a 2013 Grizzly that was a great machine but I always wanted more power. I do like the power steering better than the EPS on the Polaris. I did buy a Polaris though. I found a 2016 XP 1000 new on the showroom in 2018. I couldn't pass up on the price. It didn't have the curved A-arms but the power is intoxicating.
    I haven't had any trouble with mine and have just done regular maintenance. I ride pretty hard and have been in some pretty tough conditions that I would have locked the Grizzly up in but the Polaris, in all wheel drive, ate it up without missing a beat. Power cures a lot of problems!
    The seat is great but you sit on the Polaris and sit in the Grizzly, if you're a little smaller! My biggest complaint would be the power steering. This ATV will get going and leave the Grizzly in the dust. With that, I always felt more confident on the Yamaha.
    Would I change? Not right now. The Polaris is a really good ride with lots of power on tap. If Yamaha put the 850 in the Grizzly I'd think about it but for now I'm pretty happy.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому

      I agree 100% with everything you said! I really feel like sit "On" the Outlander though.. The Sportsman felt more similar to the Grizz to me which was part of the reason why I went with it... EPS is too much on the Sportsman tho, and believe it or not, it's even stronger on the 2019 model in terms of assist..

  • @donelias1981
    @donelias1981 5 років тому

    Nice review, I loved my 2013 850XP LE until it stopped running with 2800ish miles on it, I do not like Polaris's hubs IMO they are a little weak, I could never torque the lugs down to manufacture spec on aluminum wheels without having a stud spin in the hub, so I always had spare studs to swap out and one time had to swap the hub as the stud wouldn't hold anymore.
    I 10000% agree with the servicing, I could change the fluids in my Sportsman in like 30min, the Outlander it's a days project and when I do it I make sure I go all out and do a deep clean to make it worth my time taking it apart.
    Started on a KQ 750 (big single) and when I handed her down after getting the Sportsman it felt really underpowered, but still think it (and the Grizzly) have one of the best clutch/CVT setups out there and if Polaris and Can Am could find a way to incorporate the wet clutch into their machines.....damn watch out!

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  3 роки тому +1

      I'm testing a Scrambler S right now for ATVonDemand and that video will be on their channel on Monday.. The S models are pretty awesome especially in the right environment.. I think the pro steer and front diff should hold up very well.. Suspension bushings are sealed now too and that's an improvement.. I haven't had enough time to know how durable everything is for the long haul but the Scrambler has been flawless so far... The S models can be ridden harder over rough terrain than any other atv ever made.. It's possible that the capabilities cause more wear on certain components but again, too soon to tell for sure..

    Would you go back to the grizzly? I’m up in the air with grizz, just like you said at the end. Knowing there’s a 1000 out there, makes it hard to decide.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  4 роки тому +2

      Yeah I definitely would... The Grizzly I had was a '16 with that 708 Subaru motor and it I didn't like the motor. Avoid the 16-18s and you'll have the Yamaha 686 motor which would be much better.. I like to ride kinda hard and fast most of he time which is why the XP1000 was more appealing to me, but there is no question that I have had to wrench on the Sportsman more than any other wheeler I've ever had (I'm riding it harder too though). The Grizzly will happily and comfortably go mid 50s on a trail all day long and chug through and over most obstacles.. I was more comfortable climbing gnarly hills on the Grizz too because it had independent front and rear brakes and was lighter. The grizz feels more nimble and agile.. Also I'm 6'1 and 285 so more motor was a little more important.. It really all depends on how you want to ride and how comfortable you are with some amount of nickle and diming.. The Grizzly is probably the best overall trail riding 4x4 every made in my opinion.. Love the XP1000 too..

    Hey I'm about to either pull a trigger on used (300 miles) 2018 xp 1000 or 2020 850 trailer edition. I. Leaning towards the xp1000 because it's bigger and cheaper but I want to know how you rate it after 2 years of using it. Thank you

      I like the xp1000 and 300 miles isn't very much. It is nice to have some factory warranty though and the 850 is more than enough motor.. Here's everything that has gone wrong with mine..
      One way bearing in the clutch seized up at 18hrs, had to be replaced.
      Bushings and ball joints only lasted about 1100 miles. Front diff seals lasted about the same. I wasn't mad about any of that though, except the clutch, we had done 100s of miles running as fast as we could over very rocky terrain and I think i mostly shook the thing to death... It's a good wheeler, maintenance is very easy and it's super comfortable.. The power, weight, and capabilities of these machines just mean that some of the stressed components have a relatively short life expectancy compared to smaller machines.. I'd get it again though 100%..

      SXSs are cool, but I'm all about the 4wheeler.. Picking lines and thinking ahead a little bit is what gets my mind off everything else.. Plus it's fun to sling your weight around and feel it have an effect on the machine.. The only SXS I've spent any amount of time driving was Flyin Brian's Turbo Dynamix and that was a pretty killer experience, we traded off at HM for awhile last year.. I rode all day with Too Fast Matt in the XX once and it was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life!!! HAHAHAHAHA!

      I agree the EPS on the 19s is very sensitive, more so than it was in 18.. I think the EPS in Awd is pretty spot on, but I like breaking the back end loose so I don't typically ride that way... I hope you get used to it, I definitely did... Power to weight ratio would be similar but you'd have about 3 grand left in your bank account. Biggest negative would be no power steering.

    Theres a easy remedy for the heat issue on most ATV's....the oil. The ATV-Motorcycle oil they sell has certain additives removed so that they will work with a wet clutch system ( like a 5 speed manual). Motorcycles share the engine oil with the clutch. CVT equipped ATV's DO NOT share the engine oil with a clutch yet Polaris and others continue to sell motorcycle oil for their engines. They remove additives that reduce friction so that clutches wont slip...they need certain amount of friction to work...but again these quads have no clutch sharing oil with the engine. Basically automotive oil is so slick it will cause a motorcycle clutch to slip so they have to make it work less effectively so the clutches won't slip. Since you dont have to worry about a clutch on a CVT you can put a good automotive racing oil in your ATV. It lubricates much better and you will notice a major change in engine eat. I learned this while experimenting with Harleys which also dont share engine oil with a clutch like japan models do. So i tired the Amsoil 5w-50 automotive oil in my Sportsman 570 and the heat issue virtually disappeared. The cooling fan used to kick on constantly and after I changed over to the automotive oil it rarely kicked on at all. I think Polaris still calls for 5w-50 which is hard to find but Amsoil makes a 5w50 AUTO OIL that will work much better than the Polaris or any other Motorycle-ATV specific oil. Try it and it will make a believer out of you. ( Im not trying to sell Amsoil.....Amsoil just happens to make the 5w50 Polaris wants but dont buy the ATV oil). The oil that works so good that it will make a clutch slip is the oil you want lubricating your engine. Get what I mean???? Heat is from friction and throwing away the ATV specific oil will reduce your friction by a lot. Its amazing how many people dont know about the anti friction additives being removed from ATV and motorcycle oils so that wet clutches can work ( yet virtually no ATVs have clutches anymore accept sport quads like the raptor).
    PS....this isn't about brand....its about TYPE. Any brand that meets the viscosity requirement will lube your engine better than ATV specific oil. Most people when they buy AMSOIL for there Polaris will buy the ATV oil which also has the same good stuff removed from it. Buy the automotive 5w50 or the racing 5w50 and you will notice a huge difference in heat. I ran Valvoline 20w50 racing oil in my Harley and it made a huge difference too vrs the " V Twin" oil everybody buys. Harleys dont need motorcycle oil but they continue to sell " v twin" motorcycle oil for them that cost more....its a big scam.
    EDIT: It was the Amsoil 5w50 Signature Series I put in my 570. It went from cooling fan running all the time to rarely kicking on at all. Made a major difference.

    • @JohnnyRebKy
      @JohnnyRebKy 4 роки тому

      Dirt ObseXXion Well I didn’t mean to preach at ya or anything lol. Some have a hard time grasping what I’m telling them. You still need motorcycle specific oil in your bikes if they share the engine oil with the primary like all Japan bikes. The Harley Sportster also requires it. All the big twin Harley’s do not share oil with primary and all CVT quads and SxS do not share. On all of those you can run non motorcycle- atv oil. If you make the switch let me know how it goes although I already know 👍🏼.
      If you get a chance today go look at your jug of Polaris oil. On the back it will say “ wet clutch approved”. Now you know what that means and why using something not designed for a wet clutch will reduce your heat. Wet clutch approved is designed to allow MORE friction. What they remove is called “ friction modifiers”. Friction modifiers are the additives that reduce friction by a lot and if they aren’t removed a manual wet clutch will slip and not work. Since we have no wet clutch on SVT quads, or big Harley’s, we want that slick oil in our engine! ATV-Motorcycle oil is a compromise between allowing enough friction to work the clutch and just enough lube to lubricate the engine. Since we don’t have to worry about that there is no reason to compromise. Of course they keep selling it because they can charge more for special “ atv” oil and most people don’t know any better. Good luck!!

      Dirt ObseXXion I’ll tell ya how I learned this. I had a 2002 Harley Wide Glide that had lots of top end chatter and would burn up my leg while sitting still. I tried Mobil 1 and Amsoil motorcycle oil everyone loves and same thing. Even tried some Lucas. When I figured out the engine oil isn’t shared with the primary clutch like on a japan brand I decided to experiment. I bought some Valvoline VR1 full synthetic racing oil for old V8 race engines and poured in there. My top end noise immediately disappeared and I had a hard time getting the thing warmed up. The getting hot and burning my leg totally stopped. It showed me how much better the auto racing oil lubed the engine vrs all the special “ v twin motorcycle oils”. Sure it’s required in a Kawasaki cruiser but not my Harley. So then I poured some in a sport quad I had with a clutch and sure enough it was so slick the clutch wouldn’t work. It slipped and wouldn’t grab. That showed me the major major difference in how well the 2 types of oil lubricate a engine. The one that worked so well a clutch couldn’t get enough friction to engage is the one I wanted lubing my Harley engine resulting in the elimination of top end chatter and eliminating the heat burning my leg. So I tried the 5-50 signature series in my Polaris ( it was designed for the Ford GT V8 engine) and got the same result. Polaris oil had the fan constantly kicking on and engine heat would burn my right leg. When I put the automotive 5w-50 in there the fan almost never came on and no heat on my leg. I actually thought the fan was broken for awhile.
      The Atv and motorcycle oils are a “ one size fits all” thing. You can pour it into your sport quad, crotch rocket, Harley, and your Sportsman ATV. I call it “ neutered” oil since it essentially has been neutered of all the good additives to accommodate wet clutches. They charge more for it and it’s just enough to get the job done. But CVT quad and SxS owners can do so much better and if word gets out these companies will lose millions of dollars so they have no reason to tell you this.
      Here’s what I put in my 570 Polaris and reduced the heat by a LOT
      www.amsoil.com/shop/by-product/motor-oil/gasoline/sae-5w-50-signature-series-100-percent-synthetic-motor-oil/
      If you skip over to the amsoil ATV oil you will see “ wet clutch approved” and guess what...that’s what they will recommend for your Sportsman LOL 😂 ( and it
      Cost more!). Here’s what website says
      “Wet-Clutch Compatible
      Contains no friction modifiers for smooth shifting and positive clutch engagement. It controls heat and helps improve clutch life.”
      No friction modifiers is a BAD THING!
      Now you know what that means!!! It allows more
      Friction to occur for the clutch to work when your sportsman has no wet clutch! So millions are using this stuff in their ATV and SxS with no wet clutch thinking they are getting the best oil for their engine and wondering why they run so hot. Try the Signature series 5-50 and I promise you will notice a huge difference immediately

I was leaning towards the Scrambler but my wife likes to ride on the back sometimes and I see it's weight limit isn't really that high. 290lbs. I weigh 220lbs just by myself. The Sportsman isn't as exciting looking, that's for sure.. But if that's the biggest drawback, I'd say that has to be the leading contender.. If your going to have passengers sometimes but you want a spirited machine when it's just you, you'd like the drive modes on the Sportsman or the Outlander. Of those two, Outlander is a bit more powerful, but the Sportsman feels sportier and is more comfortable.. junk too. No offense to any Polaris owners, it’s the brand I’m not a fan of. Anyway, I asked the dealer why he is pushing Polaris. He said, ‘we make more money on them than on Can Am. Then he showed me how many Polaris models were being fixed at the shop. There were 12 units being worked on. 9 of them were 2 years old or newer. 1 older Can Am getting a oil change. That speaks volumes. Any manufacturer who charges so much money for a toy should be a little more fair to the paying customer. Can Am have issues too? They all do. It’s sad when a paying customer has to weigh which one break down less before making his choice.

    Every single Polaris I ride with has been sold after many problems and systems inferior to Arctic Cat, Yamaha and Honda. And the Polaris is almost as dutiest as the Arctic Cat. I am still running my 08' 1000 she's been bulletproof to the point it's actually a joke with everyone around here lol and I actually ride not some city boy cruising down a ride road splashing puddles, crawling thru a small river bed and a couple sandy small rock hill climbs. No we rode hundreds of miles way the hell up in the mountains where support or help is yourself and yourself alone lol so way way over loading/working then pounding the ole girl so hard in severe wheelin, severe racing severe means severe not sht talk online like a woman.
    All the can ams and Polaris have been sold as they're not made for the actual severe use we all have up here. Countless issues both serious (blown motors, stripped gears, blown diffs, snapped frames, a the extreme over use of plastic which always shatters an rips apart) the guys sold them all for Arctic Cat, Yamaha Honda and 1 actually for a krx1000 which is an extremely well made machine but has too long of a wheelbase for serious wheelin as the break over angle sucks, just like the wildcat X 1000. The 1 wildcat X in the group aswell has replaced his belt twice in over 6500 miles!!! Mine once in 3600+ miles only after the belt wore down to just underspec after thousands of miles. Hell man I swamped the whore twice by accident as heavy rains flooded the rivers we had to cross to get back home so I had no choice. I shut her down dried it up, fired it right back up and rode all the way home no problem at all! Check the cvt next day the fckr had atleast 3/4 gallon of water haha I cleaned it all up and to this day it's flawless.
    I should add to date the only machines faster is scrambler 850 yet I blow the doors off the 1000 model?! Honestly too. The can am 800-1000 renegades. I love how much fun said machines are and if we all didn't absolutely rely on hammer reliability I/they'd be a top pick for bo work only fun. But with 3 having quite a few problems (idk exactly what still but they guys who had them were diehard Polaris/can am guys) right up untill the issues and ruining rides/them getting stranded started haha as there is ZERO cellphone reception around here that's no joke. The Honda Rincon one of them built is very impressive honestly, he runs it as a sport machine basically as she's a joke to an Arctic Cat but setup like he has it's fckn awesome.
    We lost our beloved, All American Made Arctic Cat to republican party bread an butter Wall Street, and that's taken the form of Textron swiping up the smallest, tiny manufacturer fighting like a mad man a true American against the massive manufacturers like Polaris, can am and even Yamaha, Honda Suzuki, basically all of them. Hopefully they will find themselves again as we genuinely NEED those massive ATVs and Utvs that are unrivalled and ya can't kill short of 90 mph off a damn cliff.
    We will never see mostly steel, true 4 wheel drive with a manually operated fully front locker with a true CVT system not just a copy and paste snowmobile CVT set-up (basically) as Polaris and Can ams no wet clutch non constant tension CVT system absolutely BLOWS very snappy feel however it's artificial and no better way to cook a belt at the worst possible time/place.
    Who knows, maybe now we've all lost the true American Arctic Cat, just like Yamaha with their new Rmax 1000 who saw the hole they left once wall street textron city boys stole them. Filling it with the same type of UTV Arctic Cat made for us. It's also already the best made UTV to date. Maybe others will see the massive sales Yamaha gained by pandering to us who need Arctic Cat type capable machines
