  • Prior to testing the 2017 Polaris Sportsman XP 1000 , over the past decade of reviewing Polaris 4x4 ATVs, we’ve come to expect machines that are for many riders, often second to none in their class. Already possessing arguably the best one-liter machine on the market, Polaris made a number of refinements to the 2017 Sportsman XP 1000, looking to improve performance, versatility, durability, comfort, and most notably, appearance.
    We really dig the aggressive looking Matte Black version of the 2017 XP 1000. However, the more refined appearance of the metal flake, copper color painted plastic of the Matte Copper LE model, paired with its notably updated body styling, has quickly grown on us.
    If you are in the market for an ATV primarily for the purpose of getting work done. You could purchase two Sportsman 450 Utility editions for around the same price as one XP 1000 and get twice as much work done. With the Scrambler XP 1000 designed for pure sport 4x4 enthusiasts and the HIghLifter Edition dedicated to mud riding, the Sportsman XP 1000 is left as the all-terrain, multi-purpose, ATV in Polaris 1000cc class lineup. Offering such a high level of comfort, ride quality, agile handling, and excessive, yet manageable horsepower, the Sportsman beckons to be taken out on day long rides, loaded down with camping and or hunting gear, while delivering the horsepower needed to vanquish nearly any hill or opposing rider you encounter who doubts how powerful the Sportsman really is.

      ATVonDemand I only have just over 400 miles on my 2018 Sportsman XP 1000 but they are hard miles and I don't ride my other ATV because it's so much more fun . Like my year older 2017 Kodak 700 (you made me buy with your review ) has the same miles on it and wouldn't even have that many it I didn't let others ride it with me.

      This is why I didnt get a 1000. The transmissions can only handle so much power being smaller in stature. I went with a 750 kingquad and I love it. Fast enough for me etc.

    Awesome review. Best on UA-cam in my opinion. Your review made me buy my 2018 lava orange LE 1K. Amazing machine. In this industry, it's a horsepower war. And Polaris is definitely winning this one for now. Thanks again.

    Crazy that when I was a kid it was cool to have 450-500 really even a 300 was good fun. Then we got 600-700cc. Now we have sport utility ATVs packing 1,000cc motors that haul serious ass.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому +1

      Jay P we just hope people realize that the 300cc- 400cc machines are still just as much fun as they were back then.

      I agree they are still a blast sometimes its nice to ride a much lighter machine. These 1k machines are just enormous. Still amazing how well they perform though. I always enjoyed a utility ATV that was under 600 Lbs. Great review!

    Coming off of a Honda 450R, I can say that I would GLADLY own one like this. Sadly, this quad is going to be the expensive retired mans moving couch or the weekend warrior's ride of choice who thinks wearing khakis shorts and a motorcycle week T-shirt is appropriate riding apparel... Thanks for the review anyways you guys. It is so incredibly clear that you put very hard work and effort into each video and review.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому +2

      Alex, sorry it took so so long to reply. Yeah, you need to have deep pockets and that will put this ATV in the hands of more people that can't make full use of it than it will younger, fit riders who can. You are right, we do put a lot of work into the videos and the fact that you point it out tells us its worth the effort! Thanks for watching and commenting.

    I own one of these, the same exact one, and it is Awesome!!! The power is crazy, a lot faster then the other 1000's! I beat pretty much everything, except modded 1000's. It climbs everything also, like in your video. I have a lot of video's on my channel, racing, hill climbing, trails. Good video.

      Is it better than a Polaris xplorer 1997 400?

  • @gregparrott
    @gregparrott 7 років тому +2

    I own a 2015 XP 1000 and a 2011 Can Am X XC 800. The Polaris has a more comfortable ride in rough terrain, has more ground clearance, and less 'snap' in the throttle and clutch configuration (which is good for most riding). But the Can Am is a bit smaller, a lot lighter, nimbler, and has considerably more 'snap' in both the throttle and clutch. The Can Am BADLY needed heat wrap on the exhaust, as at times, it literally melted part of the bodywork near my thigh into small puddles of plastic. The main complaint I have about the Polaris is the power steering. (As noted in this video)
    Even with the engine and power off, you can rock the handlebars a degree or two before taking out the slack and getting the wheels to turn. This is less pronounced in the Can Am's power steering (although the Can Am power steering occasionally quits and defaults back to manual steering). Back in 2009, when power steering was an option, I compared multiple new XP 850 in a showroom both with and without power steering. All of those with power steering had more slop in steering than those without power steering. My conclusion is that the power steering box itself is the main culprit for the slop in steering and this is what makes my 2015 model feel a bit unstable at speed (not that I like to go over 50 on a 53 inch wheelbase vehicle anyway). I have never pressed it beyond 65 and even that was very brief.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому

      We love good viewer information! Thanks for sharing.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 7 років тому

      Thanks. I really do wish that Polaris would use a better power steering unit. Some years ago, Can Am specifically advertised that they used a different mechanism than most for sensing the driver's torque input and that theirs was more precise. It is actually true. Electrical power steering systems commonly use angular displacement of a torsion bar connected between the steering input and the steering output. The greater the angular displacement, the greater the electrical assist. If I remember right, Can Am's unit uses piezo-resistive sensors and they require less displacement. As it currently stands, for sustained driving over ~35, the Can Am system is quite noticeably more stable.

    Nice I always liked the new look of this sportsman. I bought a 2016 Sportsman 850SP it’s a good quad so far no issues. Gets me out and back and tons of power and comfort.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  4 роки тому +1

      The 850 is a great machine. We'd most likely buy one and save a couple grand. Its not like you need any more for trail riding.

  • @TheCuttingtorch
    @TheCuttingtorch 7 років тому

    One of the best, thorough reviews ive ever seen. Can you imagine if this quad came out in 1995?? Guys would be going to see therapists and a lotta ppl wouldnt bother with a new top end in their 250R.. That said i am NO polaris cheerleader, but one thing they are doing right is NOT making mud specific quads.

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому

      Daniel, thanks for the love on the review. We have to be honest though. As much as we love this machine for riding on gnarly or wet trails, it doesn't deliver the light, nimble, tossable, and controllable feeling of the lightweight 250R or even the new YFZ450R for that matter. In our opinion, if your a sport quad guy, no 4x4 is going to take its place. That said, the XP 1000 is insanely fun to ride.

    • @TheCuttingtorch
      @TheCuttingtorch 7 років тому

      I agree certainly not apples to apples. A big issue one would be brand new and the other would probly be beat to hell. (If we were in '95)

    Had a chance on a group ride to swap with someones 2016 Sportsman XP 1000, with my Outlander XT 1000r. Sportsman had better feeling factory brakes, but the power was no where near how my Outlander felt. Suspension also was not near as predictable. Seating position and comfort, also no where close. The guy that bought the Sportsman, told me he wished he would have waited until he could have tested a Can-Am, after he got off mine.
    You get what you pay for.

      Earth Smell thanks. We never really went away. About a year ago we split our ATV contents from the UTV content. we figured one demographic was probably not as interested in the other so now we split our time between making quad and side-by-side test. we really support the right on Sigman and figured Polaris didn't need any more help from an ATV publication selling RZRs. if you want to keep up with all we do, consider subscribing to UTVonDemand as well. we have 3 or 4 ATV projects in the works right now. we also want to do some more stuff with the Sportsman 1000. there's plenty more coming. Thanks for watching.

    Ich habe mehrere Jahre Polaris gefahren die Polaris Sportsmann XP 1000 ist die letzte. Im Sommer 2017 gekauft, drei mal die Welle zwischen Getriebe und Motor gebrochen jedes Mal mehre Wochen auf das Teil gewartet Total in den letzten anderthalb Jahren ist die Maschine ein halbes Jahr in der Werkstatt gestanden Jetzt habe ich eine Can Am gekauft schauen ob die besser ist

    What are the main difference between this and scrambler 1000? I've always been a huge fan of sport atvs and owned a Yamaha yfz450 and the Suzuki quadracer 450. Loved them both and love to ride aggressively. But getting a little older now I want something more practical. I want something I can take camping, ride trails with the girl friend on back, plow the snow off the driveway, but also want to be able to haul ass, do some little jumps, take to sand mountain.. and thoughts?

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому +1

      Lurp Jr it probably depends on what you want to do more, haul camping gear or have a little better suspension components. Without examining the specifications back-to-back their weight is pretty close. The Sportsman has much more rack capacity than the small racks on the scrambler. The Sportsman also has a ton of dry storage under the front rack and inside a rear compartment. Unless Polaris is up the horsepower on the scrambler for 2018, the Sportsman has literally a couple more horsepower because of a new exhaust and a couple other small tweaks. We see the biggest difference in performance comes in the piggyback Reservoir equipped and more highly adjustable Fox suspension on the Scrambler period We guess it comes down to what's more important to you. Being able to haul cargo or having a little better suspension. It sounds like you should consider buying the Sportsman and upgrading the suspension later if you need it. The stock suspension is pretty good, just not as trick and adjustable. Hope this helps. It is back if you have any other questions.

    So I’ve been riding dirt bikes and atvs for a couple years now just by riding with my friends I’m by no means an expert but I’m also not a beginner I want an atv with a lot of power I don’t really want to start with lower power vehicles and upgrade down the road spending more money so I was wondering if this would be a good pick as my first(owned) atv and maybe just take it easy until I get a little more experienced

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  6 років тому

      Based on everything you said it might be a good machine for you. You have experience on dirt bikes and ATVs, you don't want regrets when it comes to Performance, and you seem to understand it would be best to take it easy on this thing at first. You may also want to take a look at the 2019 Can-Am Outlander 1000 which was just updated. We will have a review coming on it in the next few weeks. Also, if you want a machine that slight and you can throw around you might want to take a look at a sport quad like the Raptor 700 from Yamaha. It's not as powerful as these but it's much more Nimble can be more easily manhandled by the rider.

    Great detailed review. I recently purchased a 2017 polaris 1000 highlifter and I love it. But my machine tops out at 50mph is there a reason for this

    • @ATVonDemand
      @ATVonDemand  7 років тому

      Everett West having not yet tested that machine we have a feeling that you'd probably tops at around 50 miles per hour because it's geared lower to deal with turning incredibly tall tires through deep heavy mud.

      If you really want to go fast in the desert a two wheel drive sport ATV is still the way to go but for a long distance adventure trip where you need to carry supplies this machine is pretty sweet. Its a nice year round trail machine back here in Ohio.

      @ATVonDemand  6 років тому

      Wyatt honda they were still in pretty good condition. We were testing in intermediate to soft conditions so they didn't wear much. They seem like pretty durable tires anyway which isn't surprising considering they were developed originally for side by sides.
