      Thanks for checking us out!.. We've reviewed each a little more in depth more recently too.. Both have some advantages and disadvantages depending on your intended use... fyi, I just had to replace front diff seals, ball joints, and all the bushings on the Sportsman after 1200 or so miles.. Not a huge deal, but something I'd have wanted to know before deciding..

    Amazing video. I ride a lot of rocky trails here in Colorado. So I still feel that the Sportsman & it’s comfort would be best for me. The fuel economy as well. There is so many long trails out here. I don’t want to be taking multiple gas cans with me when I go ride. Thank you for making a real world no bulls*** video. I've watched this review before and just did again. You guys are great. I used to have a Sportsman 850SP and I was blown away how good it was on gas compared to my buddies with Outlanders. My 850 used about the same gas as my friend's 650 Outlander. An other guy with an Outlander 1000R XTP used a lot of gas. It was a total pig, especially with a load of camping gear on the back. My 850 barely used any more gas when I had a load of gear on it. I have a Commander 1000 (Not the R model) and it uses less gas than my friend's Outlander 1000R. That engine seems to be extra thirsty for some reason.

  • @FrankiesChannel
    @FrankiesChannel 5 років тому +5

    Great job on putting this comparison video together. Really enjoyed how you guys give an honest & straight forward review. I've had both these machines so I can totally agree with your comparison. I've always said you won't beat the XP on ride and you won't beat Can am on power. The only part I was surprised that you mentioned was on fuel economy. I always got more miles on a tank with the Can am then the Polaris. But I guess that would all depend on riding style and setup of the machine. I used low gear much more on the Polaris than I do with the Can am.
    I do most of my own wrenching on these machines, so I can go on and on with their issues. But as of late. Can am has been putting out some pretty shitty quality. In saying that, once you can get past fixing Can am's issues with lot's of $$ with aftermarket products. The fun factor of the Can am is very addictive. That's something I can't say about the Polaris. I've tried doing several aftermarket upgrades with the Polaris with minimal improvement. For example in your video I'm assuming both machines are in their stock form. Polaris already has one of the best clutches in the industry while Can am has the worst. Upgrade the clutch on Can am and instantly you get a huge performance boost.
    In my personal opinion. Polaris builds a better machine and Can am has a better motor. Both machines are fast and both have more than enough power to pull you out of any mud hole. With that said, be prepared for the carnage that follows having more power. Once again, great job on putting this video together. I think it should be very helpful for someone looking into buying a new machine.

    Nice review guys! I've always found the Sportsman to be confidence inspiring with handling and by far the most comfortable machine out there. The AWD system works well in most situations except in icy conditions due to rear wheel only engine braking. It can be scary. I find the Visco Lok works well in trail riding but in technical conditions it often takes many revolutions of one wheel before it kicks in. Everything has their pros and cons I guess. Keep up the good work fellas.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +1

      Very well said! The Sportsman has scared me a few times on steep descents in slick muddy conditions.. ADC is better than just AWD with engine breaking though.. The Visco is definitely good for trail riding.. We had to try to get it out of sorts..

    • @EastCoastATV
      @EastCoastATV 5 років тому

      @@DirtObseXXion The ADC is good when you're going slow enough for it to engage. I think you have to be driving less than 15 mph, which you would do on a steep decent, but not on a straight flat section. I had one slide sideways and throw me off one time when on a snowy trail. All I did was let off the throttle to slow down a bit but the heavy engine braking locked the rear wheels on me unexpectedly. It's something for people that live in snow belts to be aware of. It's not a problem with the models that don't have engine braking. Too bad Polaris couldn't design the engine braking that would allow for it to be disengaged for winter riding.

    • @joerutkowsky3261
      @joerutkowsky3261 5 років тому

      I thought in hill decent it was all four wheel braking and when in normal mode it is only rear wheel braking? I believe I seen that on a video on UA-cam.

    • @EastCoastATV
      @EastCoastATV 5 років тому

      @@joerutkowsky3261 With ADC Polaris uses an electronic actuator and clutches that slow the front wheels, the clutch slows the rear wheels all the time. When ADC is off you only have rear wheel engine braking. When ADC is on you have four wheel braking but only below 15 mph, and you have to have your thumb off the throttle. If you are going faster than 15 mph or use the throttle at all it doesn't work. Check your manual, it should be in there. Here's a video explaining it. The video is a bit old, but it still works the same. ua-cam.com/video/D3yfPVT5nSI/v-deo.html.

    The kind of honest review that I like, thanks for putting it together.
    Traded off a 17 xxc Renegade 1000 Last Summer and one of my biggest complaint other than I had multiple problems with it in less than 600 miles, was the ride quality. That Renegade no matter what adjustments I did it never really smoothed out. I felt like it rode horrible and was way too stiff not very enjoyable to ride when things get rough. If I was going to go with another big boar ATV again it would most likely be the Polaris this time. Plus in my opinion the Polaris has the better all wheel drive system. I absolutely hate the visco-lok system It let me down and it's let my buddies down. Terrible front Locking System.

    Nice work guys! Polaris has always been like riding a couch but I’ve never owned, or even ridden one since they reconfigured the engine/tranny layout to make it narrower like a sport quad. My old 800 Sportsman ran great but produced a lot of heat. I like the thought of a big bore utility bike with ergonomics more like a sport quad. Sounds like it comes down to dealer support in your area and what kind of deal you can get. And as usual, Blue Holler looks like a great place to ride!

      @@ICEMANINVADER its AWESOME! I've since added an HMF exhaust and tuner. I would still recommend the 1 up. The four wheeler is longer on the 1 up model than standard, which helps greatly with keeping the front wheels down. I ride with friends who are consistently popping wheelies and can't go as fast as I can because of it. I feel like i have more control on turns as well.
      The 1 up also has a built in spot for your passengers feet. The seat is very comfy and the handles are great for the passenger. I also bought a storage box that can go where the seat is if I don't have a passenger.

    Thoroughly enjoyed the honest, no smack talk review. I would like to comment on a couple things you mentioned though. I have an Outlander 1000 and of course an AWD fourwheeler will perform well. But Visco-Lok has never let me down, much like you found in the majority of the video. I am quite surprised though, that you found the Polaris to have the smoothest ride! My Outlander is as smooth as a dream, and all of my friends Polaris's nearly beat me to death. The suspension on theirs is almost as hard as a straight axle Honda. Anybody else experience the same?

      I can't imagine a ton of scenarios where the visco lok would let you down.. Like we mentioned, we had to try to trip it up...We both thought the Sportsman had the better ride but ultimately that comes down to personal preference (most of our points do)... Both awesome machines!

    I have an 18 850 sportsman, my brother has a 16 Outlander 1000. Both are good machines and have more than enough power for the high speed trail riding and hill climbing that we typically like to do but I'll stick with the sportsman for its comfort and awd system. The fuel economy is also a HUGE factor, my brother has to haul around an extra gas can every where we go, seems like he uses 2x the fuel that I do.

    One of my biggest criteria, and biggest concern on the Outlander is the rear Diff. There have been problems in the past. Hopefully they have made some improvements. Dependability when I am out in the wild and have a LONG walk back is what it is all about. Could not care about drag racing.

    Haven't rode the Polaris 1000 yet, but I've had an Outlander 1000 while my wife had a Sportsman 850. Your comparisons are spot on. Polaris comfort in ride, confidence, AWD, and power steering are exactly right. So plush and smooth compared to the CanAm. However, the Outlander (as well as Renegade 1000 - which I owned after), have a completely bonkers low-end torque. Have to be careful at first, but you get used to it. I prefer the throttle on the CanAm's, as it's easier to get the back end out on tight twisties. Felt like the Polaris took a bit longer, and have to rev up more to accomplish the same thing. But man, that ride quality on the Polaris.....so smooth. Gets a bit too loose feeling to me personally though. Love them both, for different reasons.

    edit: Now that I think about it, there isn't a whole lot that has changed about these bikes in the last several years (watching this in 2023). Max tow capacity on both machine is around 1500 lb
    Better tire that's a huge plus if you don't want mud tire
    the EPS yeah but you have to switch mode which is another thing to think during driving
    The standard mode is good so you don't fly all the time on 2 wheel, never tried it on a outlander (also way cheaper on gas)
    comfort is important and usually a big focus on polaris, if you drive 4-5 hours it is something you might want
    Power, the outlander would be better yet you don't use stock tire and she doesn't drink normal gas.
    The rotax should have better power, can am usually has a better motor :)
    Both excellent machine, pick your poison lol

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +1

      Yep! The Outty claims 1650lbs tow capacity and the Sporty is 1500.. I kinda thought the DPS was gimmicky but its so easy to use that you would actually use it.. The button is were the reverse overdrive is on most machines.. Personally, I'd leave it in max because that's what I used too... The Outty would be much more comfortable with a plusher seat but the Outty's seat will probably last longer... Thanks for being here brother!

I also have front and rear sway bars that make handling much better than my 2006 Outlander 800. Did the outty in the teat have sway bars? I had a Sportsman before that and thought the ride was too soft. Like the feel of the stiffer Outlander.

You had to shut it down depressurize it. For like 25k I want better. Argo was cool , but my farms r farm from Argo land. Used it for frost seeding but that just lost popularity.

      Our experience is primarily with pure sport SXSs.. Flyin Brian has a Rzr Turbo Dynamix, Too fast Matt has a Wildcat XX, but most of our experience is with the CanAms and Polaris machines... There are a ton of more utility options out there, enough that dealership location, price, and functionality should be primary concerns.. Personally I'd look at something like a Kawasaki Teryx or something like that.. you'd have something work capable that was also fun to drive with a sport/utility option like that.. If you're no using the Argo for very specific terrain it's not a great vehicle for work...

    Great video. I didn't know the seat heights were that different. Polaris is in the nosebleed section! 2.5" is HUGE!
    Also saw one other thing that is very different between the two bikes......fuel cap location. What is Polaris thinking having it under the handlebars?! That has to be obnoxious as hell, not to mention the higher tank location raises the center of gravity. I guess they couldn't put it where it should be because the cvt is there? And yeah, I agree with you with you with the "on trail" cvt repairs on the Polaris. Been there, seen that. Never again. Just tow it back to the garage.

    • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому

      Thanks man! We would never have guessed that Polaris seat height was higher.. It really feels much more tucked in. The gas cap on the POPO is on the drivers left side below the highest point of the body, the tank is up front but carries its weight pretty well..
      Yep, the belt on the Polaris is a bit of a PIA. But most of em are.. You have take a bunch of plastics and the foot-well off on a Grizz.. Fortunately Ive never ever had to do a belt change on a Grizz because Yamaha's CVT is awesome..

    Both great machines but for high performance and reliability I purchased the Can-Am. Guessing anyone buying a 1000 cc machine is looking for the most performance. Just looking at the GNNC 4x4 starting lines says it all 90% Can-Am’s. After broken in noticed the fuel consumption gets much better on the Can-Am(can ride all day on a tank of gas)
    Both top of the line and and push each other so we all win.

    Great review! Did yall race in 4wd? I can't race in 2wd on the renagade xmr 1000r because it spins way too much in high range and low range is ridiculous! Way to much power on take off and that is with 29.5 outlaw 2s that weigh 47 lbs each, tire only. But maybe the final drive ratio is different on the xmr,and clutching. But I put it up on the pavement against a yamaha 660r and can eat it's lunch as long as you ride on the handle bars to help keep the front end down. • @DirtObseXXion
      @DirtObseXXion  5 років тому +1

      These are both great machines, if you're leaning towards the CanAm I wouldn't be afraid of the visco.. The Polaris AWD is better, but we ride steep rocky stuff too and haven't had any issues with the visco lock.. Brian let me borrow the Outlander last week and I was every bit as confident on that as I am on Sportsman... I'd say it would cause the most issues in off camber mud.. We've learned a bit more about both these machines since we made this vid.. I was really impressed with the ride on the Outlander.. I like the trailing arm style rear suspension and the shocks up front are better for aggressive riding... Drawbacks are that maintenance is a bitch and it definitely gets horrible gas mileage.. I'm working on an Outlander review vid now after we've had some issues and out about 500 miles on it..
