If you are looking at a spot atv the another thing to notice is the ground clearance under the back axel is low to the ground so it will get stuck on rocks easier that a utility atv.

A utility wheeler is good enough for me. I have a Polaris sportsman 500. I will have it a year coming in June. I used it during the gun deer season. It was a big help for me. My feet are in bad shape. It saved me a lot of walking that I couldn't have done. It carried me to the north side of the field where the deer like to go. Then one came out and I shot it. Then I tied it to the back of the wheeler and it carried me and my deer out. I like my wheeler. I will never hunt without it now.
I am 43 now and about to sell my yfz 450 sport quad and just bought a polaris sportsman. I love to go fast but being comfortable is now more important to me. That being said I am looking into the can am renegade 800x. It's 4x4, automatic, and crazy fast. My so will ride the Polaris. He tried learning on a blaster and the trails we ride are too extreme. He wants automatic
We have very technical trails where I’m from and I ride a motocross but almost all my friends who have quads are Renegades. It’s just a freak of nature and on a category of its own
I choose the lower power and low displacement kymco models. They're basically #2 for reliability, only under Honda, (they helped develop their engine), they have nice suspension, and they've been selling my model (mxu 150) forever, and (in 2018) was still selling. Supposedly theyre super easy to repair and parts can be found. Super cheap, (my mom got hers for under 2 grand when it was relatively new) and parts are shared between multiple kymco models, (it uses MX'ER and Mongoose parts).
Awesome job! I'd love a more sport oriented ATV, but being a fatty... I'll stick something big enough for me, and cargo room for my sandwic...... tools.
😆 thanks brother. Well the sportsman 1000 definitely toes the line between sport utility and just utility! Especially with a few mods, the beast could probably keep up with say the scrambler! It's sort of one of those, "yea technically it's a utility machine" 🤣
I got a 84 trx200 86 Suzuki tl230 2 Polaris a 90 250 trail boss and a 425 magnum. For a first timer buy a decent used whatever size to get a feel for it but don't be afraid to work on them a little.
Don't be too nervous to start on something big. I learned to ride on a Yamaha grizzly 700 when I was 12. If you have the self control to take it slow untill your comfortable on it, start on a medium-big bike.
Good info, thanks for the video. 1st time purchasing an ATV. Recently purchased some land and was looking for a good ride. I've always rode a buddy's or rented so I never had to worry about these kind of things. Helped my purchasing decision. Cheers
I’m 73 and bought a 2019 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP. I absolutely love it. We have tons of trails here in Sanpete County, Utah. I live 6 blocks away from Manti Canyon with trails spanning many towns and Canyons. I love going up the Canyon and on the trails. My bike has the perfect amount of power for me. The suspension system is absolutely perfect for riding. It’s manageable in every way for my husband and I who has the same bike. Good luck. Buy what you feel fits you and the type of riding you want to do.
Great video and advice. I recently bought a Cforce 500 2 up. Works for me but not for everyone. You're bang on with the power debate. I go everywhere my buddies go with their 700 Grizzlys on the technical trails. They leave me behind on the open roads, but I don't have a death wish!
Thanks for the compliment and input, Malkie. Congrats on buying the Cforce 500! Brad (he is in some of our videos) has a Cforce and is pretty happy with it. I was rather impressed personally, I think the Cforce over delivered on what I expected from them being less expensive with lots of value!
Lol I still have a Yamaha Warrior 350 and love they thing. I've been riding for years and still have fun on it. Yeah, I have some bigger bikes but still love to go back to that old thing
Hell yeah man. I've got a 2005 Raptor 350 which is essentially the same as the warrior. Bought it brand new when I turned 18 and still have it. Great bike! I also have more powerful machines but I will never get rid of my 350. It's still on the original clutch and I ride it all the time even if it's a quick loop around the block. I've had a tusk heavy duty clutch sitting on standby for the last 4 years but haven't put it in because the original one is completely fine still. Now that they don't really make sport quads anymore the only way I'll separate from it is over my dead body. I love that thing.
Make sport quads great again lol should have included a 450 sport quad rather than a 400ex. 400s are low maintenance compared to every make and model of sport 450 ever made (greasing parts, changing oil frequently, tightening bolts) just another thing to think about when looking to purchase an atv.
I have 2. I have a 400 2 stroke 4x4 great for mud, trails and village roads it has stock racks and my dad loves it because he can cary stuff , and when he has time ha goes riding with me,than I have a sport 450 (yfz 450) love it. The only problems are that it's maybe too loud for the village and eats tires+no reverse
I’ve got an old 87 trx250r for sale. Starts first kick, bored to 360cc, full bore plastics, asv levers. Straight cut gears, cool head, comes with sand and dirt tires. Lol. Buying older isn’t that cheap.
I ride a 1987 honda foreman 350, used to gather wood, explore, and plow. Not much riding on existing trails. I like finding new places, and making new trails. And my woman likes collecting rocks in the creek lol
We have a Kodiak utility Atv from 2005, thing still runs great so if your thinking of buying a utility Atv that's also fun to ride on the trails I'd strongly look towards Yamaha
Nice! I love hearing about machines well over 10 years old that still run good. I just sold a 2003 Honda 400 last eyar...still ran like it was brand new!
My grizzlys a good trapping quad and good on gas, went mudding as well a few times and it did fine as wine, it’s good for work as well such as towing and Halling wood and what not, it’s a 2020 so I won’t know how long it’ll last but I have done lots with it already and it’s my favourite brand by far.
Very good video! You are spot on about engine size. Kind of off subject ? My first "new" snowmobile was an Arctic Cat El Tigre 6000 ( 600 cc 2 stroke) and later decided to upgrade to a ZR 8000 ( 800 cc 2 stroke), I will be the first to admit I should have just stuck with my 600! Don't get me wrong, having about 40 more HP is awesome but the extra weight and almost too much power made it a handful in the tight trails that I ride in. I guarantee I could get through those trails faster on my 600 and with a lot less effort than on my 800 cc sleds! Just this last weekend I was riding some trails in Northern Michigan with a couple of buddies( my 2017 Sportsman 850 SP, 2004 Sportsman 700 and a 2000 Honda Recon 250). I tell you what even though 2 of us had some big bad Sportsmans, it was quite challenging to keep up with that little Honda ridden by an experienced rider on tight trails!! :-)
Thanks for the compliment, Wattz! I don't think that was off topic. Your snowmobile story sounds very similar to my Motorcycle story, ha! Thanks for sharing. Those little 250's can be quick! But your point is exactly what I was getting at. The rider's ability to ride matters more than just having a big machine. As always, thanks for you detailed input!
Why not have 2 I had a 700XX for going fast, high speed trails, jumpd, mx style riding. Also had a 420 Rancher for cruising rock crawling working around the house.
the point standing at 15:00 stands true - im 13 now, but, when i was 12, started off on a 107 engine and yes chinese was still fun as hell and worth it, my brother came over (had graduated from marine corps), and was riding a yamaha 400, cant remember the exact name right now, but i was around 5'7 at that age and like 180+ lb, and by that point i was really experience with bumps, drifting and getting out of those sucky situations, and also controlling at high speeds, but he hadnt had that experience entirely, and for him it was difficult to keep up, even though he was about same weight but just 6'2
2006 Honda rancher 350 4 x 4 with the warn manual switch kit to take it out of 4 x 4 all-time. That way you have 2 Wheel Drive . when you want. Everything is manual on it “no electronics“ so if you sink it, you just change the oil and filter in your good to go. It’s impossible to kill one of those and it’s hard to get them stuck. You can also look into a 400 and put a shifter on it and takeoff all that electric stuff but I don’t know how good those are I never had one.
I’m no this is a older video love the video . I’m just getting in to this , trail riding & a little up hill riding , I went with a Kodiak 700 2023 year ,, i my self I’m finding it does everything I need & want to do for a light work & trail riding , , over all , this Kodiak 700 is awesome machine ,, yes there better ones out there , but I’m having fun with this machine
I went big bore utility on my first cuz I know ima use it for lots of trail ride and hunting. My dad got a 450 Yamaha Kodiak thing bogs climbing up hill. I didn’t buy big bore to run all it’s power down the dirt road but it’s a cruise going up hill lightly tapping the throttle and it goes.
For the Hybird I think you were looking for - 'it's a jack of all trades, but a master of none' :) Great video though, I am looking at picking up my first ATV, and this is helping me choose what to get.
So, I am a motorcyclist. A tourer. Not a bagger or dresser a sport tourer. I have a cabin with steep pitches. I like the the idea of utility two up riding. Not looking for super speeds just functionality. I am "that guy"
my first ATV that i bought a week ago are a CFMoto Cforce 600 Touring. I had no problem with it, though what that being said, i'm taking it easy. I have been riding ATV before but not this big, no regrets though :) I'm also a 43 year old fairly big guy and it suited me.
Honda Recon is the best Atv for utility. It's light, cheap, less parts to break, if you get stuck alot put a winch and your good to go. 4x4 front axles break on the larger models recon is rear wheel drive that never breaks. Or you can get a Honda Rancher 420 2WD but it's heavier so if you get stuck by yourself you might have a hard time getting out of the mud you will definitely need a winch on this Atv.
I always had sport atvs like the raptor 660 and the ex400 but as I got older 4x4 was more of a desire as you can not hit a trail the same way as the 4x4 utility quad as you don't high center or get hung up on a branch when you only have 1 set of tires spinning.
I have a 1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 and I'm perfectly happy with it. Got it last March, actually got it a year ago to this day. I've had one quad before it, a 2001 Yamaha Grizzly 600, but that thing was a POS. This Sportsman definitely isn't. It's reliable anyway, that model and year is known for being reliable, and on top of that I found it with 60 original hours on it which is insane to me. But that thing is perfect for my riding style. I'm not that invested in ATV riding, I don't need an 850cc or 1000cc heavy duty machine. I only go big bore for snowmobiles because I'm very invested in snowmobiling, I only like to ride the biggest and baddest 800+cc mountain sleds that go 0-100kph faster than you can blink, that's just how I ride snowmobiles. But that's not how I ride ATVs, it's just something for the summer to cruise around and occasionally I'll do some mudding with it but mostly just cruising through fields. I'm not invested in ATV/UTV riding, it's not my thing. Unlike my grandpa who gets a new fully specced out UTV every year lol. I just want something to cruise around and go through tight technical trails every now and again. The fastest I would ever go on an ATV is like 80kph and that's about how fast the 500 goes on a long enough straight. If I were to get another ATV, it would either be a Yamaha Raptor 350 or a Can Am XMR 650. I do enough mudding and technical trail riding to justify the Can Am, but the Raptor would realistically suit my riding style more. But you can find those for pretty cheap. So what I would realistically do is keep my Sportsman 500 and then also find a cheap Raptor 350. That would probably be in a couple years though
I think I’m going to get a Kawasaki KFX450R monster energy edition. My cousin had one and I’ve been in love with it ever since so I think for my first ATV I’m going with that.
I started off at prob 6-8 years old on a polaris scrambler 90, upgraded from that onto a trail boss 330, and now that im getting tired of that I'm getting a yamaha banshee 350 within the next few months
I started off at a Polaris sportsman 90 at 6year old and will never buy them again Polaris’s carberator has to be replaced about every 4 months or cleaned Since then I have had Honda’s from 300 to 450cc and they’ve never put me down
I had a 2005 bombardier outlander max xt 400 brand new in 05. I used it to plow the driveway and took my kids for trail rides, sold it then bought a used 08 sportsman 500 h.o a few years later. I used it to plow the driveway and some trail riding. I have a crf450x for off road riding but I decided I would rather have a more fun quad and sell the firtbike and utility quad. Put a down-payment on a 2022 Sportsman 850 ultimate trail edition. Looking foreward to it.
For my purpose. Moose hunting. Honda does the job. I’m not a mud bogger. Don’t need a high speed I need something dependable with some torque for pulling a wagon full of meat
I have a Artic Cat XC 450 it's the best of all worlds when it comes to 4 wheeling. It's a sport quad but I've put a rack on it and a winch and there both able to plug into the trailer hitch so I'm able to use them when I need them and if I don't want them I don't have to bring them with me because there not on my machine full time. I guess my 4 wheeler is closer to hybrid. I have 4 wheel drive reverse plus my seat is comfortable. I like it
Looking for fun, good off road capabilities in all terrains...Scrambler/Sportsman or Renegade/Outlander..for reliability best choice is Honda then Yamaha..
I ride a trx450r and my friend has a scrambler 850. I like my 450r for its ability to be controlled and the raw power. I like my buddies scramble because it feels like a cadi. Sure its heavier but the plush suspension makes you want to ride all day and it can keep up with my 450r on the trails if you know how to ride it. The scrambler is a very well rounded quad and im considering buying one

I had a Banshee that I put a lot of miles on. Never had any problems with it, not even a fouled spark plug. Then again I bought mine used but it was practically new and stock. Had to pay a premium for one that nice but it was worth it. Anyway, just find one that hasn't been modded too crazy and it should be reliable.
Nicely done video, would have been nice to see examples of utility/sport/hybrid. Thanx to your video I’m leaning heavy toward the utility versions. Maybe the hybrids, big horses don’t work as hard. Also the 2 up option would be great for taking helpers, grands friends and extra gear to the forest. I’m 63 and retired but as a former body builder I’m pretty capable physically. I love forestry work and milling timber so definitely leaning toward utility for accessories but with hybrid power and heavy towing capacity. Just need to figure out reliability, warranty snd performance of the various brands before cashing in. Thanx again 😎👍

If you are looking at a spot atv the another thing to notice is the ground clearance under the back axel is low to the ground so it will get stuck on rocks easier that a utility atv.
Quads with metal racks are king!
I rode atvs when I was 5 years old. full size Yamaha for a couple of years. 26 years later I walk in and brought the 1000R Outlander can am XMR.
It had been a long time but I love it. Power!!!!!!
My friend not so lucky. I let him use my ride . 5 mins later he roll it over on its side.
He own a 850 Polaris.
He couldn't handle it.
I told him.
" you have to be one with the equipment, feel it"

Very informative video! Thanks!
I settled on a honda Rubicon special edition.
A 500 engine but the honda is the only four wheeler still using cluches and actual gears
All the rest are the belts ..way more durable for work and play
I thought Arctic cat made manual machines also
@@nickmcallister5207 they possibly do , I didnt even look at artic cat because there are no dealers near me and also the price is far from what I was willing to pay ..the special edition Rubicon with incentives was only 8500$ ,I walked out of honda at 9500$ with the plow and wench. No other top of the line 4 wheeler was under 10 grand ..your only getting the 500 engine but with exhaust air filter and tuning kit upgrade ,it has plenty of power.
Also it can tow and carry stuff on the racks at a higher capacity, in some cases like the 700 grizzly from yamaha it was close to 900 pounds more
Older Hondas were very very reliable..new Hondamatics have tons of issues

A utility wheeler is good enough for me. I have a Polaris sportsman 500. I will have it a year coming in June. I used it during the gun deer season. It was a big help for me. My feet are in bad shape. It saved me a lot of walking that I couldn't have done. It carried me to the north side of the field where the deer like to go. Then one came out and I shot it. Then I tied it to the back of the wheeler and it carried me and my deer out. I like my wheeler. I will never hunt without it now.
This really helps, thank you for elaborating your points very well. The rambling, not an issue, if we have time to listen, we will. Thanks again.
Don't get him automatic, he needs to learn
350cc for a teen? I moved up to your polaris scrambler 500 at the age of 10! I am surprised im not dead yet
Don’t shy away from CF Moto. I went ahead bought a brand new 800 xc and it’s incredible. Tons of power and super smooth
Love your channel by the way.
If you mean me.. Thanks!!! We all love some Navigate Offroad too!
I got a 84 trx200 86 Suzuki tl230 2 Polaris a 90 250 trail boss and a 425 magnum. For a first timer buy a decent used whatever size to get a feel for it but don't be afraid to work on them a little.
Kawasaki Prairie 650
Big engine, reliable, cvt, 4x4 with diff lock, racks and towing capacity, solid axle for sporty riding
Recently picked up a 23 Yfz450r as my first quad and love it can follow all my friends on 4x4s and walk them in the straights
Don't be too nervous to start on something big. I learned to ride on a Yamaha grizzly 700 when I was 12. If you have the self control to take it slow untill your comfortable on it, start on a medium-big bike.
Kevin Wich I learned on a sportsman 700 when I was like 9 lol
3 wheelers bud at 7.
Good info, thanks for the video. 1st time purchasing an ATV. Recently purchased some land and was looking for a good ride. I've always rode a buddy's or rented so I never had to worry about these kind of things. Helped my purchasing decision. Cheers
Hey Ben, great to hear it was helpful! Congrats on the land! What state did you get some land in?
I’m 73 and bought a 2019 Polaris Sportsman 850 SP. I absolutely love it. We have tons of trails here in Sanpete County, Utah. I live 6 blocks away from Manti Canyon with trails spanning many towns and Canyons. I love going up the Canyon and on the trails. My bike has the perfect amount of power for me. The suspension system is absolutely perfect for riding. It’s manageable in every way for my husband and I who has the same bike. Good luck. Buy what you feel fits you and the type of riding you want to do.
I wish I’m like that at 73. Got me 54 years before I’m there
Great video and advice.
Spot on comment. I said the same thing to my buddies. I have a 500, they 800's.
Hey guys, I just uploaded my first video review of the Cforce 500. Check it out on my channel and let me know what you think!
Try both of them at the dealer. They gave me 0 issues asking to sit and drive one around their property. I Got a utv.
One of the better reviews that I have seen. Thank you.
The reverse is always a bummer. At least they are light and easy to move. Used to have a Honda 400...that was a great machine!
I’ve got an old 87 trx250r for sale. Starts first kick, bored to 360cc, full bore plastics, asv levers. Straight cut gears, cool head, comes with sand and dirt tires. Lol. Buying older isn’t that cheap.
I already knew I wanted a sport quad but this is a great video to help new quad people find what they want
I ride a 1987 honda foreman 350, used to gather wood, explore, and plow. Not much riding on existing trails. I like finding new places, and making new trails. And my woman likes collecting rocks in the creek lol
We have a Kodiak utility Atv from
2005, thing still runs great so if your thinking of buying a utility Atv that's also fun to ride on the trails I'd strongly look towards Yamaha
This is the most useful video out there. It helped so much. I went with a used 2008 Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O.
Best buying guide I have seen hands down. Thanks for the info.
An ATV is a must in Canada, the amount of Crown land is endless.
I guess my tall self want a utility machine to take my son with me or my wife and cruise trails and carry a cooler with drinks sounds like what I want
I have a polaris 800 twin 2005 and it still runs great
Nice! I love hearing about machines well over 10 years old that still run good. I just sold a 2003 Honda 400 last eyar...still ran like it was brand new!
Thanks. Just what I was looking for. Fast talking is best in my opinion

My favorite sport utilities machine is the Yamaha wolverine
the point standing at 15:00 stands true - im 13 now, but, when i was 12, started off on a 107 engine and yes chinese was still fun as hell and worth it, my brother came over (had graduated from marine corps), and was riding a yamaha 400, cant remember the exact name right now, but i was around 5'7 at that age and like 180+ lb, and by that point i was really experience with bumps, drifting and getting out of those sucky situations, and also controlling at high speeds, but he hadnt had that experience entirely, and for him it was difficult to keep up, even though he was about same weight but just 6'2
Honda Foreman seems to be the go-to ATV that does everything.
If your new the best first time buy is the 350cc banshee (hehe)
I’m no this is a older video love the video . I’m just getting in to this , trail riding & a little up hill riding , I went with a Kodiak 700 2023 year ,, i my self I’m finding it does everything I need & want to do for a light work & trail riding , , over all , this Kodiak 700 is awesome machine ,, yes there better ones out there , but I’m having fun with this machine
2013 King quad 500axi ps , camo .. ,love it 6 years no problems
For the Hybird I think you were looking for - 'it's a jack of all trades, but a master of none' :)
Great video though, I am looking at picking up my first ATV, and this is helping me choose what to get.
I have been riding ATV before but not this big, no regrets though :)
I'm also a 43 year old fairly big guy and it suited me.
ah Chinese junk 😂
@@reggieos6945 well, Chinese but at least ktm is in the picture, still no issues with the atv
I needed this. What an 4 wheeler so bad. But don’t know where to start 😢 Great video brother
I am 11 and utility is the best for me
I always had sport atvs like the raptor 660 and the ex400 but as I got older 4x4 was more of a desire as you can not hit a trail the same way as the 4x4 utility quad as you don't high center or get hung up on a branch when you only have 1 set of tires spinning.
Here something some quad people do they literally do anything that they know gone damage it then they sad when they gotta take it to the shop
Also the sport quad is probably the most fun but there obviously not the most comfortable but there also the most capable
I think the saying you were looking for during your sport utility "hybrid" sections is: a jack of all trades is a master of none.
You didn't say the word "vehicle" once in this video lol.
Machine
That would probably be in a couple years though
grew up on a raptor 90 since I was 7, I'm 16 now and I still have it. I'm gonna be selling it to buy a raptor 350.
You are not talking too fast! Honestly, most videos are done by folks who talk to slow and I wind up watching them on 1.5 speed!
I think I’m going to get a Kawasaki KFX450R monster energy edition. My cousin had one and I’ve been in love with it ever since so I think for my first ATV I’m going with that.

I like it
Can one even say he’s had fun in the Midwest without riding one of these in the woods ?
Looking for fun, good off road capabilities in all terrains...Scrambler/Sportsman or Renegade/Outlander..for reliability best choice is Honda then Yamaha..

Sure its heavier but the plush suspension makes you want to ride all day and it can keep up with my 450r on the trails if you know how to ride it. The scrambler is a very well rounded quad and im considering buying one

Hey Terry, thank you for the compliment. That means a lot. Getting this channel going and working on figuring out what info is useful to riders has been tough. So I really appreciate comments like this.

A banshee isnt that reliable as well... But they are awesome
